ZrO2-A and ZrO2-B catalysts were prepared by two different coprecipitation methods and their performance of CO hydrogenation was studied. The results indicated that ZrO2 and Li-, Pd- and Mn-modified ZrO2 catalysts exhibited good selectivity and high STY to higher alcohols. The surface characteristics of ZrO2-A and ZrO2-B samples were investigated by means of BET, NH3-TPD, XRD and UV Raman technique. The tetragonal zirconia on the surface region of ZrO2-A and Li-Pd-Mn/ZrO2-A catalysts may be responsible for the high selectivity towards ethanol, while the monoclinic zirconia on the surface of ZrO2-B and Li-Pd-Mn/ZrO2-B catalysts may be crucial to the high isobutanol selectivity.

This paper deals with determining points of zero charge of natural and Na+-saturated mineral kaolinites using two methods: (1) acid-base potentiometric titration was employed to obtain the adsorption of H+ and OH- on amphoteric surfaces in solutions of varying ionic strengths in order to determinate graphically the point of zero net proton charge (PZNPC) defined equally as point of zero salt effect (PZSE); (2) mass titration curve at different electrolyte concentrations in order to estimate PZNPCs by interpolation and to compare with those determined by potentiometric titrations. The two methods involved points of zero charge approximately similar for the two kaolinites between 6.5-7.8, comparable to those reported previously and were in the range expected for these clay minerals. The comparison of potentiometric surface titration curves obtained at 25 °C and those published in the literature reveals significant discrepancies both in the shape and in the pH of PZNPCs values.

In addition to classical methods, namely kriging, Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) and splines, which have been frequently used for interpolating the spatial patterns of soil properties, a relatively more accurate surface modelling technique is being developed in recent years, namely high accuracy surface modelling (HASM). It has been used in the numerical tests, DEM construction and the interpolation of climate and ecosystem changes. In this paper, HASM was applied to interpolate soil pH for assessing its feasibility of soil property interpolation in a red soil region of Jiangxi Province, China. Soil pH was measured on 150 samples of topsoil (0-20 cm) for the interpolation and comparing the performance of HASM, kriging. IDW and splines. The mean errors (MEs) of interpolations indicate little bias of interpolation for soil pH by the four techniques. HASM has less mean absolute error (MAE) and root mean square error (RMSE) than kriging, IDW and splines. HASM is still the most accurate one when we use the mean rank and the standard deviation of the ranks to avoid the outlier effects in assessing the prediction performance of the four methods. Therefore, HASM can be considered as an alternative and accurate method for interpolating soil properties. Further researches of HASM are needed to combine HASM with ancillary variables to improve the interpolation performance and develop a user-friendly algorithm that can be implemented in a GIS package. Nanohydroxyapatite (op-HA) surface-modified with L-lactic acid oligomer (LAc oligomer) was prepared by LAc oligomer grafted onto the hydroxyapatite (HA) surface. The nanocomposite of op-HA/PLGA with different op-HA contents of 5, 10, 20 and 40 wt.% in the composite was fabricated into three-dimensional scaffolds by the melt-molding and particulate leaching methods. PLGA and the nanocomposite of HA/PLGA with 10 wt.% of ungrafted hydroxyapatite were used as the controls. The scaffolds were highly porous with evenly distributed and interconnected pore structures, and the porosity was around 90%. Besides the macropores of 100-300 mu m created by the leaching of NaCl particles, the micropores (1-50 mu m) in the pore walls increased with increasing content of op-HA in the composites of op-HA/PLGA. The op-HA particles could disperse more uniformly than those of pure HA in PLGA matrix. The 20 wt.% op-HA/PLGA sample exhibited the maximum mechanical strength, including bending strength (4.14 MPa) and compressive strength (2.31 MPa). The cell viability and the areas of the attached osteoblasts on the films of 10 wt.% op-HA/PLGA and 20 wt.% op-HA/PLGA were evidently higher than those on the other composites.

In this study, we report the effects of ferricyanide on organisms based on the changes in physiological state and morphology of Escherichia coli (E coli) DH 5 alpha after being pretreated by ferricyanide. The impact on bacterial cell growth and viable rate of exposure to different concentrations of ferricyanide was determined, and the morphology change of E. coli was studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Finally, recovery test was used to evaluate the recovery ability of injured cells. The results showed that the effects on growth and morphology of E. coli were negligible when the concentration of ferricyanide was below 25.0 mM. While the results showed 50.8% inhibition of growth in the presence of 50.0 mM ferricyanide for 3 h, 89.6% viability was detected by flow cytometry (FCM) assay. AFM images proved that compact patches appeared on the bacterial surface and protected the bacterial viability. Furthermore, the results revealed that deterioration of bacterial surface closely related to the incubation time from 0.5 to 3 h at 100.0 mM ferricyanide. In the recovery test, microbial cell population and dissolved oxygen individually decreased 36.7% and 28.3% with 25.0 mM ferricyanide.
pH-dependent conformational changes of ferricytochrome c induced by electrode surface microstructure
Resumo:
pH-dependent processes of bovine heart ferricytochrome c have been investigated by electronic absorption and circular dichroism (CD) spectra at functionalized single-wall carbon 'nanotubes (SWNTs) modified glass carbon electrode (SWNTs/ GCE) using a long optical path thin layer cell. These methods enabled the pH-dependent conformational changes arising from the heme structure change to be monitored. The spectra obtained at functionalized SWNTs/GCE reflect electrode surface microstructure-dependent changes for pH-induced protein conformation, pK(a) of alkaline transition and structural microenvironment of the ferricytochrome c heme. pH-dependent conformational distribution curves of ferricytochrome c obtained by analysis of in situ CD spectra using singular value decomposition least square (SVDLS) method show that the functionalized SWNTs can retain native conformational stability of ferricytochrome c during alkaline transition.

Au-Pt core-shell nanoparticles were prepared on glass surface by a seed growth method. Gold nanoparticles were used as seeds and ascorbic acid-H2PtCL6 solutions as growth solutions to deposit Pt shell on the surface of gold nanoparticles. These core-shell nanoparticles and their growth process were examined by UV-Vis spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and field-emission environmental scanning electron microscopy and the results indicated that the deposition speed was fast and nanoparticles with obvious core-shell structure could be obtained after 2 min. Moreover, this seed growth method for preparation of the core-shell nanoparticles is simple and convenient compared with other seed growth methods with NH4OH as a mild reductant. In addition, electrochemical experiments indicated that these Au-Pt core-shell nanoparticles had similar electrochemical properties to those of the bulk Pt electrode.

Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used to study the surface acid-base property of carboxylic acid-terminated self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). A carboxylic acid-terminated thiol, such as thioctic acid (1,2-dithiolane-3-pentanoic add), was self-assembled on gold electrodes. Electron transfer between the bulk solution and the SAM modified electrode was studied at different pH using Fe(CN)(6)(3-) as a probe. The surface pK(a) of thioctic acid was determined by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to be 5.6 +/- 0.1 and 5.8 +/- 0.1, respectively. The method is compared with other methods of monolayer pK(a) measurement.

The biosensor based on surface plasmon resonance(SPR) technology is a very useful tool to study the interaction between biomolecles. The main advantages of this technique is to "visualize" macromolecular interactions directly in real time, and in a label-free mode rather than indirect methods like enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs). We immobilize human serum albumin (HSA) to the carboxymethyldextran-modified sensor chip surface covalently to detect the activity of anti-HSA in serum, and regenerate the surface with .1 mol/L phosphoric acid. The results show that SPR biosensor can detect the activity of anti-HSA in real-time quickly and the sensor chip can be used over 100 cycles.

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and lateral force microscopy (LFM) were used simultaneously to analyze a model membrane bilayer structure consisting of a phospholipid outer monolayer deposited onto organosilane-derivatized mica surfaces, which were constructed by using painting and self-assembly methods. The phospholipid used as outer monolayer was dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC). The hydrocarbon-covered substrate that formed the inner half bilayer was composed of a self-assembly monolayer (SAM) of octadecyltrichloroorganosilane (OTS) on mica. SAMs of DMPC were formed by exposing hydrophobic mica to a solution of DMPC in decane/isobutanol and subsequently immersing into pure water. AFM images of samples immersed in solution for varying exposure times showed that before forming a complete monolayer the molecules aggregated into dense islands (2.2-2.6 nm high) on the surface. The islands had a compact and rounded morphology. LFM, coupled with topographic data obtained with the atomic force mode, had made possible the distinction between DMPC and OTS. The rate constant of DMPC growth was calculated. This is the first systematic study of the SAM formation of DMPC by AFM and LFM imaging. It reveals more direct information about the film morphology than previous studies with conventional surface analytical techniques such as infrared spectroscopy, X-ray, or fluorescence microscopy.

The thickness of the gold film and its morphology, including the surface roughness, are very important for getting a good, reproducible response in the SPR technique. Here, we report a novel alternative approach for preparing SPR-active substrates that is completely solution-based. Our strategy is based on self-assembly of the gold colloid monolayer on a (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane-modified glass slide, followed by electroless gold plating. Using this method, the thickness of films can be easily controlled at the nanometer scale by setting the plating time in the same conditions. Surface roughness and morphology of gold films can be modified by both tuning the size of gold nanoparticles and agitation during the plating. Surface evolution of the Au film was followed in real time by UV-vis spectroscopy and in situ SPRS. To assess the surface roughness and electrochemical stability of the Au films, atomic force microscopy and cyclic voltammetry were used. In addition, the stability of the gold adhesion is demonstrated by three methods. The as-prepared Au films on substrates are reproducible and stable, which allows them to be used as electrodes for electrochemical experiments and as platforms for studying SAMs.

Three kinds of TiO2 nanostructured thin films and their CdS-sensitized films, consisting of different sizes of TiO2 nanoparticles prepared with different methods, have been investigated. The surface photovoltage spectra (SPS) measurements indicate that the density of surface states on TiO2 is likely dependent upon the details of prepared methods. TiO2 particles prepared from basic sol have more surface states than that prepared from acidic sol. When the TiO2 thin films prepared using the TiO2 sols were sensitized by CdS particles, the SPS responses relative to the surface states on TiO2 from 350 to 800 nm were decreased. The photoelectrochemical properties of nanostructured TiO2 electrodes suggest that the fewer the surface states and the smaller the particle sizes of TiO2, the larger the photocurrent response. For CdS sensitized TiO2 thin film electrode, it is shown that the semiconductor sensitization is an efficient way to decrease the influence of surface states on the charge separation, and can improve the intensity of photocurrent response. A self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of 3-mercaptopropionic acid (HSCH2CH2COOH) was formed on a gold electrode. The effect of the charge of the end group on the electrochemical response of Fe(CN)(6)(3-) at the SAM modified electrode was studied by using cyclic voltammetry. At high pH, when the -COOH groups are dissociated, Fe(CN)(6)(3-) current is suppressed; as the solution pH is lowered, Fe(CN)(6)(3-) current increases. The electrochemical titration curve was obtained by correlating the currents to the different electrolyte pH values, from which the surface pK(a) was obtained to be 5.2+/-0.1. Furthermore, a calculation equation was presented to simulate the electrochemical titration. As comparison, the surface pK(a) was also measured by contact angle titration as 5.6+/-0.1. The surface pK(a) values determined by the two methods in our work are consistent and accurate.
