SIMP (source of immunodominant MHC-associated peptides) plays a key rote in N-linked glycosylation with the active site of oligosaccharyltransferase, being the source of MHC-peptides in the MHC I presentation pathway. In the present study, the SIMP gene has been cloned from grass carp Ctenopharyngodon idella by rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE). The full length of the cDNA sequence is 4384 bp, including a 1117 bp 5' UTR (untranslated region), a 2418 bp open reading frame, and a 849 bp 3' UTR. The deduced amino acids of the grass carp SIMP (gcSIMP) are a highly conserved protein with a STT3 domain and 11 transmembrane regions. The gcSIMP spans over more than 24,212 bp in length, containing 16 exons and 15 introns. Most encoding exons, except the first and the 15th, have the same length as those in human and mouse. The gcSIMP promoter contains many putative transcription factor binding sites, such as Oct-1, GCN4, YY1, Sp1, Palpha, TBP, GATA-1, C/EBP beta, and five C/EBP alpha binding sites. The mRNA expression of gcSIMP in different organs was examined by real-time PCR. The gcSIMP was distributed in all the organs examined, with the highest level in brain, followed by the level in the heart, liver, gill, trunk kidney, muscle, head kidney, thymus, and the lowest level in spleen. Furthermore, the recombinant gcSIMP has been constructed successfully and expressed in Escherichia coli by using pQE-40 vector, and the polyclonal antibody for rabbit has been successfully obtained, which was verified to be specific. Identification of gcSIMP will help to explore the function in fish innate immunity. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Surface, overlying, and interstitial waters were collected at monthly intervals at three experimental stations in a shallow Chinese eutrophic lake (Lake Donghu) to assess the occurrence, distribution, and status of UV-sensitive phosphorus compounds (UVSP) and phosphatase hydrolyzable phosphorus (PHP), coupled with kinetics of alkaline phosphatase activity (APA). Orthophosphate (o-P) concentrations were generally the highest at Station 1, where chlorophyll a (chl a) was a function of o-P at temporal scale. The V-max/K-m of APA obtained by Michaelis-Menten approach paralleled the chlorophyll data at two stations. These facts imply that the development of phytoplankton may be attributed to APA induced by PHP. The potentially available UVSP and PHP peaked in interstitial, overlying, and surface water simultaneously sometimes in 1995 to 1996 and 1997 to 1999. It is postulated that they may arise from the bottom. UVSP peaked in interstitial water at the 12-16 cm layers in sediment cores. Moreover, in interstitial water, UV irradiation resulted in an elevated o-P concentration and decreased APA in a timeseries analysis. Therefore, the mechanism that APA involved in the process of photorelease of o-P was not demonstrated. UVSP is most likely a functional group of labile phosphorus distinct from the enzymatic substrate in this shallow eutrophic lake.

The growth response of Chlorella vulgaris to low concentration of dimethoate, an organophosphorus pesticide, was studied. Results show that cell density, protein content, chlorophyll pigment and alkaline phosphatase activity were all increased, which indicates that low concentration dimethoate can accelerate growth of Chlorella vulgaris. Spontaneous emission from GaAs/AlGaAs quantum dots (QDs) embedded in photonic crystals with a narrow photonic band gap is studied theoretically. The results show that the decay lifetime is very sensitive to the sizes of QDs, and both inhibited and accelerated emission can occur, which had been indicated in a previous experiment. The Weisskopf-Wigner approximation, good for atoms and molecules, may be incorrect for QDs. A damped Rabi oscillation of the excited state with the transition frequency outside the photonic band gap may appear, which is impossible for atoms and molecules. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. The antibunching properties of the fluorescence from a two-level ideal system in a 12-fold quasiperiodic photonic crystal are investigated based on the calculated local density of states. We found that the antibunching phenomenon of the fluorescence from two-level ideal systems could be significantly changed by varying their positions, i.e., perfect antibunching and antibunching with damped Rabi oscillation phenomenon occurred in different positions and at different frequencies in photonic crystals as a result of the large differences in the local density of states. This study revealed that the multi-level coherence of fluorescence from a two-level ideal system could be manipulated by controlling the position of the two-level ideal system in photonic crystals and the emission frequency in the photonic band structure. ZnO film of 8 mu m thickness was grown on a sapphire (0 0 1) substrate with a GaN buffer layer by a novel growth technique called metal-source vapor phase epitaxy (MVPE). The surface of ZnO film measured by scanning electron microscope (SEM) is smooth and shows many regular hexagonal features. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) of ZnO(0 0 2) and (1 0 2) omega-scan rocking curves are 119 and 202 arcsec, corresponding a high crystal quality. The status of the strain in ZnO thick film was particularly analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) omega-20 scanning. The results show that the strain in ZnO film is compressive, which is also supported by Raman scattering spectroscopy. The compressive strain can solve the cracking problem in the quick growth of ZnO thick film. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

N-p-n Si/SiGe/Si heterostructures have been grown by a disilane (Si2H6) gas and Ge solid sources molecular beam epitaxy system using phosphine (PH3) and diborane (B2H6) as n- and p-type in situ doping sources, respectively. Adopting an in situ doping control technology, the influence of background B dopant on the growth of n-Si emitter layer was reduced, and an abrupt B dopant distribution from SiGe base to Si emitter layer was obtained. Besides, higher n-type doping in the surface region of emitter to reduce the emitter resist can be realized, and it did not result in the drop of growth rate of Si emitter layer in this technology. We employ photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved PL to study exciton localization effect in InGaN epilayers. By measuring the exciton decay time as a, function of the monitored emission energy at different temperatures, we have found unusual behaviour of the energy dependence in the PL decay process. At low temperature, the measured PL decay time increases with the emission energy. It decreases with the emission energy at 200K, and remains nearly constant at the intermediate temperature of 120K. We have studied the dot size effect on the radiative recombination time by calculating the temperature dependence of the exciton recombination lifetime in quantum dots, and have found that the observed behaviour can be well correlated to the exciton localization in quantum dots. This suggestion is further supported by steady state PL results.

In this article, we report a combined experimental and theoretical study on the luminescence dynamics of localized carriers in disordered InGaN/GaN quantum wells. The luminescence intensity of localized carriers is found to exhibit an unusual non-exponential decay. Adopting a new model taking the radiative recombination and phonon-assisted hopping transition between different localized states into account, which was recently developed by Rubel et al., the non-exponential decay behavior of the carriers can be quantitatively interpreted. Combining with precise structure characterization, the theoretical simulations show that the localization length of localized carriers is a key parameter governing their luminescence decay dynamics. The influence of nonradiative recombination on the photoluminescence (PL) decay dynamics in GaInNAs/GaAs quantum wells is studied by time-resolved photoluminescence under various excitation intensities. It is found that the PL decay process strongly depends on the excitation intensity. In particular, under the moderate excitation levels the PL decay curves exhibit unusual nonexponential behavior and show a convex shape. By introducing a new parameter of the effective concentration of nonradiative recombination centers into a rate equation, the observed results are well simulated. The cw PL data further demonstrate the nonradiative recombination effect on the optical properties of GaInNAs/GaAs quantum wells. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

As reported by other authors, we have also observed that the Si growth rate decreases with increasing phosphine (PH3) flow rate in gas source-Si molecular beam epitaxy using phosphorous (P) as a n-type dopant. Why small quantity PH3 can affect Si growth rate? Up to now, the quantitative characterization of PH3 flow influence on Si growth rate is little known. In this letter, the PH, influence will be analyzed in detail and a model considering strong P surface segregation and its absorption of hydrogen will be proposed to characterize the effect.
