In this paper, the charge transfer across the micro-liquid/liquid interface supported at the orifice of a double-barrel micropipette, namely, a theta-pipette, is reported. Simple ion transfer(TMA(+)), facilitated ion transfer (potassium ion transfer facilitated by DB18C6), and electron transfer (ferrocene and ferri/ferrocyanide system) have been investigated by cyclic voltammetry. The experimental results show that a very thin aqueous film, linking both barrels filled with the aqueous solution and the organic solution respectively, can spontaneously be formed on the outer glass surface of such a double-barrel micropipette to construct a micro-liquid/liquid interface, which provides the asymmetry of diffusion field. Such device is demonstrated experimentally which can be employed as one of the simplest electrochemical cells to investigate the charge transfer across the liquid/liquid interface.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTS) coating with europium oxide by a simple method is reported in this letter for the first time. The CNTS were refluxed in a solution of nitric acid containing europium nitrate, and the pH value was subsequently ajusted with ammonia solution. At last, the mixture was filtered and annealed. The TEM micrograph showed that the CNTS were covered with a uniform thin layer with thickness of about 15 nm. The XRD results revealed that the CNTS were coated with europium oxide.

Solvent free polyaniline emeraldine base(EB) corrosion protection coating was prepared, employing aliphatic polyamine as solvent of EB as well as hardener of epoxy resin. This coating passed 2000h of salt fog test when the EB loading was about 1 wt%. The interaction between EB and iron indicated that EB acted as a "quasi-catalyst" to cause the formation of densed iron oxide film in the interface.

The synthesis Of SiO2 coated CeO2 nanoparticles by humid solid state reaction at room. temperature is described. Transmission electron microscope results show that CeO2 Particles were coated with a layer Of SiO2. Binding energy of Ce 3d(5/2) was shifted from 883.8 to 882.8 eV after coating in the XPS Ce 3d spectra. This confirms the chemical bond formation between SiO32- and Ce4+. Because the surface photovoltage property of CeO2 nanoparticles that were used as core materials in the experiment approaches to that of CeO2 macroparticles, peak P2 (electron transition from 0 2p on surface to Ce 4f) disappeared in the surface photovoltage spectrum of CeO2 nanoparticles. Also, the effect Of SiO2 on the electron transition from 0 2p to Ce 4f results in the lowering of surface photovoltage response intensity of P1 peak (electron transition from 0 2p in bulk to Ce 4f).

Humid solid state reaction at room temperature was utilized for the first time to coat Y2O3 : Eu3+ particles with alumina. The particles were studied with an X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS), a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). XPS results show that the yttrium and europium contents are decreased and that the aluminum content is the highest except for that of oxygen after coating. SEM and EDS results show that particles are coated with a thin shell of alumina.

Ferrocenebutyrate-intercalated layered double hydroxide (FcLDH) was prepared by the coprecipitation method and characterized by PXRD, FTIR, TEM and elemental analysis. FcLDH nanoparticles in deionized water were deposited onto the surface of graphite powder to yield graphite powder-supported FcLDH, which was subsequently dispersed into methyltrimethoxysilane-derived gels to fabricate surface-renewable, stable, rigid carbon ceramic electrodes containing the electroactive ferrocenyl group. Cyclic voltammetric study revealed that peak currents of the FcLDH-modified electrode were diffusion-con trolled in 0.1 mol l(-1) KCl aqueous solution. In addition, the formal potential of the modified electrode is related to the activity of chloride ion with a Nernst slope of 56 mV per decade.

The surface morphology evolution of thin poly(styrene-block-ethylene/butylenes-block-styrene) (SEBS) triblock copolymer films as a function of the copolymer concentration was investigated by means of dynamic mode atomic force microscopy. At a relatively low copolymer concentration (0.025% w/v), the periodically orientated stripes were observed. This kind of surface patterning produced in the spin-coating process has not been reported in the literature before. It has been shown by our experiment that a shearing and stretching field can cause flexible polymer coils or aggregates to orientate during the spin coatings At a copolymer concentration of 0.05% w/v, SEBS molecule aggregates form network structures in the whole film. With further increase of the copolymer concentration, a continuous film with a microphase-separated structure was visualized.

The origins of the single- and double-melting endotherms of isotactic polypropylene crystallized at different temperatures were studied carefully by differential scanning calorimetry, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, and small-angle X-ray scattering. The experimental data show that spontaneous crystallization occurs when the crystallization temperature is lower than 117 degrees C; thus the lamellae formed are imperfect. At a lower heating rate, the recrystallization or reorganization of these imperfect lamellae leads to double endotherms. On the other hand, when the crystallization temperature is higher than 136 degrees C, two major kinds of lamellae with different thickness are developed during the isothermal process, which also results in the double-melting endotherms. In the intermediate temperature range the lamellae formed are perfect, and there is only a single peak in the distribution of lamellar thickness. This explains the origin of the single-melting endotherm. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

In natural and synthetic materials having non-racemic chiral centers, chirality and structural ordering each play a distinct role in the formation of ordered states. Configurational chirality can be extended to morphological chirality when the phase, structures possess low liquid crystalline order. In the crystalline states the crystallization process suppresses the chiral helical morphology due to strong ordering interactions, In this Letter, we report the first observation of helical single lamellar crystals of synthetic non-racemic chiral polymers. Experimental evidence shows that the molecular chains twist along both the long and short axes of the helical lamellar crystals, which is the first time a double-twist molecular orientation in a helical crystal has been observed.

Organomonothiols were used to control the extent of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole polymerization. When organomonothiols were incorporated into polyaniline/2,5-dimercapto-1,3, 4-thiadiazole composite cathode materials for lithium batteries, their electrochemical reversibility and charge-discharge capacities were improved significantly. The adsorption of an electroinactive product greatly influences an irreversible electrochemical reaction in three ways, including self-block, self-inhibition, and self-acceleration, and changes not only the heterogeneous electron-transfer rate constant but also the modified formal potential and electron-transfer coefficient of the electrochemical reaction. In order to study these adsorption effects, a double logarithmic method was suggested to be used in processing the potential-controlled thin layer spectroelectrochemical data. The result shows three types of double logarithmic plots for three kinds of adsorption effects. These double logarithmic plots can be a diagnostic criterion of the adsorption effects and enable us to determine some thermodynamic and kinetic parameters. The combination of nonlinear regression with double logarithmic method is a convenient way to examine the suggested mechanism and to extract more information from the limited experimental data. A simple double logarithmic method in potential-controlled thin-layer spectroelectrochemistry for an irreversible electrochemical process has been studied by numerical analysis and examined by experimental examples. This simple algorithm has a novel function offering some important information about the mechanism of a complex electrochemical process directly from a limited amount of potential-spectrum data, and can be used to distinguish different reaction mechanisms such as E, EC, EE, as well as to determine the electron-transfer coefficient, a, and the kinetically modified E-0'. Combination of the double logarithmic method with nonlinear regression provides a powerful tool to examine the proposed mechanism and also to estimate other thermodynamic and kinetic parameters. The efficient cleavage of plasmid DNA ( pCAT) by binuclear lanthanide complexes was investigated. At 37 degrees C and neutral pH, both Ho23+L and Er23+L promoted 100% conversion of supercoiled plasmid to the nicked circular form and linear form in 1 h. The corresponding saturation kinetics curve of cleavage of pCAT plasmid by binuclear lanthanide complexes showed the expected increase with catalyst concentration. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A.
