The structural characteristic of cubic GaN (C-GaN) nucleation layers on GaAs(0 0 1) substrates by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition was in detail investigated first by X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements, using a Huber five-circle diffractometer and an intense synchrotron X-ray source. The XRD results indicate that the C-GaN nucleation layers are highly crystallized. Phi scans and pole figures of the (1 1 1) reflections give a convincing proof that the GaN nucleation layers show exactly cubic symmetrical structure. The GaN(1 1 1) reflections at 54.74degrees in chi are a measurable component, however (002) components parallel to the substrate surface are not detected. Possible explanations are suggested. The pole figures of {1 0 (1) over bar 0} reflections from H-GaN inclusions show that the parasitic H-GaN originates from the C-GaN nucleation layers. The coherence lengths along the close-packed [1 1 1] directions estimated from the (1 1 1) peaks are nanometer order of magnitude. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Microtwins in the 3C-SiC films grown on Si(0 0 1) by atmosphere pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) were investigated in detail using X-ray four-circle diffractometry. The Phi scan shows that 3C-SiC films can grow on Si substrates epitaxially and epitaxial relationship is revealed as (0 0 1)(3C) (SiC)parallel to (0 0 1)(Si),[1 1 1](3C-SiC)parallel to [1 1 1](Si). Other diffraction peaks at about 15.8 degrees in x emerged in the pole figures of the (I 1 1) 3C-SiC. We performed the pole figure of (1 0 (1) over bar 0)h-SiC and the reciprocal space mapping from the (1 1 1) reciprocal lattice point of base SiC to the (0 0 2) point of microtwin for the first time, indicating that the diffraction peaks at 15.8 degrees in x result from not hexagonal SiC but microtwins of 3C-SiC, and twin inclusions are estimated to be around 1%. Being an established qualitative method for investigating presence of additional phases in single crystal materials, X-ray diffraction has been used widely to characterize their structural qualities and to improve the preparation techniques. Here quantitative X-ray diffraction analysis is described which takes into account diffraction geometry and multiplicity factors. Using double-crystal X-ray four-circle diffractometer, pole figures of cubic (002), {111} and hexagonal {10 (1) over bar0} and reciprocal space mapping were measured to investigate the structural characters of mixed phases and to obtain their diffraction geometry and multiplicity factors. The fractions of cubic twins and hexagonal inclusions were calculated by the integrated intensities of rocking curves of cubic (002), cubic twin {111}, hexagonal {10 (1) over bar0} and hexagonal {10 (1) over bar1}. Without multiplicity factors, the calculated results are portions of mixed phases in only one {111} plane of cubic GaN. Diffraction geometry factor can eliminate the effects of omega and X angles on the irradiated surface areas for different scattered planes. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Microtwins in the 3C-SiC films grown on Si(001) by APCVD were analyzed in detail using an X-ray four-circle diffractometer. The empty set scan shows that 3C-SiC films can grow on Si substrates epitaxially and the epitaxial relationship is revealed as (001)(3C-SiC)//(001)(Si), [111](3C-SiC)//[111](Si). Other diffractions emerged in the pole figures of the (111) 3C-SiC. We performed the (10 (1) over bar0) h-SiC and the reciprocal space mapping of the (002) plane of twins for the first time, finding that the diffractions at chi = 15.8 degrees result from not hexagonal SiC but microtwins of 3C-SiC, and twin inclusions are estimated to be 1%.

Cubic GaN/GaAs(0 0 1) epilayers and hexagonal inclusions are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Photoluminescence (PL), Raman spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The X-ray {0 0 0 2} and (1 0 (1) over bar 0) pole figures show that the orientation relationships between cubic GaN and hexagonal inclusions are (1 1 1)//(0 0 0 1), <1 1 2 >//<1 0 (1) over bar 0 >. The distribution of hexagonal inclusions mainly results from the interfacial bonding disorder in the grain boundaries parallel to hexagonal <0 0 0 1 > directions and the lattice mismatch in <0 0 0 1 > directions on {1 0 (1) over bar 0} planes. In order to reduce the energy increase in cubic epilayers, hexagonal lamellas with smaller sizes in <0 0 0 1 > directions often nucleate inside the buffer layer or near the interface between the buffer layer and the epitaxial layer, and penetrate through the whole epitaxial layer with this orientation relationship. The distribution of mixed phases and its dependence on the polarity of cubic GaN epilayers are investigated by conventional X-ray pole figure and grazing incident diffraction (GID) pole figure. The hexagonal inclusions and cubic twins can be classified into two portions: one is formed with strict crystalline orientations, the other with crystalline misorientations. The former can be measured by conventional pole figures which reveal that the density of lamellate hexagonal grains and cubic twins located on (1 1 1)(Ga) and ((1) over bar (1) over bar1)(Ga) along [1 (1) over bar 0] direction are higher than those on ((1) over bar 1 1), and (1 (1) over bar 1)(N) along [110] direction. However, the low signals from tiny mixed phases with crystalline misorientations, detected by GID pole figures, distribute in a larger phi region near the [1 1 0] and [(1) over bar (1) over bar 0] directions with much weaker intensity, and in a smaller phi region near the [1 (1) over bar 0] and [(1) over bar 1 0] directions with slightly stronger intensity. On the basis of integrated intensity of rocking curves, the multiplicity factor and the diffraction geometry factor for single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis were proposed and a general formula for calculating the content of mixed phases was obtained. With a multifunction four-circle X-ray double-crystal diffractometer, pole figures of cubic (002), {111} and hexagonal {1010} and reciprocal space mapping were measured to investigate the distributive character of mixed phases and to obtain their multiplicity factors and diffraction geometry factors. The contents of cubic twins and hexagonal inclusions were calculated by the integrated intensities of rocking curves of cubic (002), cubic twin {111}, hexagonal {1010} and {1011}.

GaN buffer layers (thickness ~60nm) grown on GaAs(001) by low-temperature MOCVD are investigated by X-ray diffraction pole figure measurements using synchrotron radiation in order to understand the heteroepitaxial growth features of GaN on GaAs(001) substrates. In addition to the epitaxially aligned crystallites, their corresponding twins of the first and the second order are found in the X-ray diffraction pole figures. Moreover, { 111 } q scans with χ at 55° reveal the abnormal distribution of Bragg diffractions. The extra intensity maxima in the pole fig ures shows that the process of twinning plays a dominating role during the growth process. It is suggested that the polarity of { 111 } facets emerged on (001) surface will affect the growth-twin nucleation at the initial stages of GaN growth on GaAs(001) substrates. It is proposed that twinning is prone to occurring on { 111 } B, N-terminated facets.

A three-dimensional linear instability analysis of thermocapillary convection in a fluid-porous double layer system, imposed by a horizontal temperature gradient, is performed. The basic motion of fluid is the surface-tension-driven return flow, and the movement of fluid in the porous layer is governed by Darcy's law. The slippery effect of velocity at the fluid-porous interface has been taken into account, and the influence of this velocity slippage on the instability characteristic of the system is emphasized. The new behavior of the thermocapillary convection instability has been found and discussed through the figures of the spectrum.

By using the gauge potential decomposition, we discuss the self-dual equation and its solution in Jackiw-Pi model. We obtain a new concrete self-dual equation and find relationship between Chern-Simons vortices solution and topological number which is determined by Hopf indices and Brouwer degrees of Psi-mapping. To show the meaning of topological number we give several figures with different topological numbers. In order to investigate the topological properties of many vortices, we use five parameters (two positions, one scale, one phase per vortex and one charge of each vortex) to describe each vortex in many vortices solutions in Jackiw-Pi model. For many vortices, we give three figures with different topological numbers to show the effect of the charge on the many vortices solutions. We also study the quantization of flux of those vortices related to the topological numbers in this case.

A minicapillary viscometer utilizing <0.5 ml of sample at a volume fraction of <0.1% is described. The calculated a/b of DPPC/DPPG multilamellar liposome was 1.14 as prolate ellipsoids and a/b of dioleoylpropyltrimethyl ammonium methylsulfate-DNA complex at a charge ratio of 4: 1 (+/-) was 3.7 as prolate ellipsoids or 4.9 as oblate ellipsoids. The deviation of shape from perfect sphere is thus expressed quantitatively in more than two significant figures. In these measurement, the necessary amount of DNA is <0.5 mg.

The influences of additive, diluents, temperature, acidity of the aqueous phase on the interfacial behavior of primary amine N1923 in sulfate media have been investigated using the Du Nouy ring method. In addition, the effect of concentration of thorium(IV) loaded in the organic phase on the interfacial tension has also been studied. The interfacial tension isotherms are processed by matching different adsorption equations such as the Gibbs and the Szyszkowski. The surface excess at the saturated interface (Gamma (max)) and the minimum bulk concentration of the extractant necessary to saturate the interface (C-min) under different conditions are calculated according to two adsorption equations to be presented in comprehensive tables and figures. It appears that primary amine N1923 has strong interfacial activity and behaves very differently in various diluents systems. The surface excess at saturated interface increase with the type of diluerits in the following order: chloroform < aromatic hydrocarbons < aliphatic hydrocarbons. The relationship between the interfacial activity and kinetics of thorium extraction by primary amine N1923 has been discussed by considering different factors. However, the interfacial activity of primary amine N1923 is only a qualitative parameter suggesting the interfacial mechanism for thorium extraction, it cannot give strong evidence quantitatively supporting this mechanism.

A PEO-tethered layer on a PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) cross-linked network has been prepared by a swelling-deswelling process. During swelling, the PDMS block of a PDMS-b-PEO diblock copolymer penetrates into the PDMS substrate and interacts with PDMS chains because of the van der Waals force and hydrophobic interaction between them. Upon deswelling, the PDMS block is trapped in the PDMS matrix while the PEO, as a hydrophilic block, is tethered to the surface. The PEO-tethered layer showed stability when treated in water for 16 h. The surface fraction of PEO and the wetting property of the PEO-tethered PDMS surface can be controlled by the cross linking density of the PDMS matrix. A patterned PEO-tethered layer on a PDMS network was also created by microcontact printing and water condensation figures (CFs) were used to study the patterned surface with different wetting properties.

Regular micrometer-size porous polystyrene film is prepared by water droplet templating, i.e. breath figures are stabilized by the polymer in solution and thermocapillary flow arranges them into ordered packing. The influences of polystyrene molecular weight, solvent properties, and the relative humidity of atmosphere on the pattern formation and hole sizes are investigated. Two different kinds of hole packing fashion are also observed and their formation mechanisms are discussed.
