Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) have become widely diffused in the environment via the manufacturing process. Numerous experiments have shown that the bioaccumulation of PAEs occurred in the aquatic and terrestrial food chain; meanwhile, it was found that some of PAEs were considered as potential carcinogens, teratogens and mutagens. In this research, two vertical/reverse-vertical flow constructed wetland systems were set up to study its removal efficiency of dibutyl, phthalate (DBP) pollution. The results showed that the constructed wetland system could remove DBP effectively, and the removal rates reached nearly 100%. Substrate microorganism and enzymatic activities probably played key roles during DBP removal, and the removal of DBP probably mainly took place in the upper layer of chamber A in the constructed wetland systems. In order to investigate the effects of microorganisms and their urease activities in macrophytic root zones on pollutant removal, four small-scale plots (SSPs) of vertical/reverse-vertical flow wetlands were set up to determine: a) the relationship between the abundance of microorganisms in the root zones and water purification efficiency; and b) the relationship between urease activities in the root zones and pollutant removal in a constructed wetland system. Total numbers of the microbial population (bacteria, fungi, and actinomyces) along with urease activities in the macrophytic root zones were determined. In addition, the relationships between microbial populations and urease activities as well as the wastewater purification efficiencies of total phosphorus (TP), total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), biochemical oxygen demand in 5 days (BOD5), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were also analyzed. The results showed that there was a highly significant positive correlation (r = 0.9772, P < 0.01) between the number of bacteria in the root zones and BOD5 removal efficiency and a significant negative correlation (r = -0.9092, P < 0.05) between the number of fungi and the removal efficiency of TKN. Meanwhile, there was a significant positive correlation (r = 0.8830, P < 0.05) between urease activities in the root zones and the removal efficiency of TKN. Thus, during wastewater treatment in a constructed wetland system, microorganism and urease activities in the root zones were very important factors.
EFFECT OF RATION SIZE ON THE GROWTH AND ENERGY BUDGET OF THE GRASS CARP, CTENOPHARYNGODON-IDELLA VAL
Resumo:
Young grass carp (12-13 g) were kept at five ration levels ranging from starvation to ad libitum feeding at 30-degrees-C. They were fed duckweed. Food consumption, absorption efficiency and growth were determined directly, and metabolism and nitrogenous excretion calculated indirectly from energy and nitrogen budgets, respectively. The relationship between specific growth rate and ration size was linear. Absorption efficiency for energy was not affected by ration size and averaged 50.6 +/- 0.57% (mean +/- s.e.). Depending on ration size, energy lost in excretion accounted for 4.5-5.9% of the food energy, energy channelled to metabolism accounted for 34.4-48.3% of the food energy, and energy retained as growth accounted for 6.7-11.9% of the food energy. Regardless of ration, a constant proportion of food energy (30.7%) was accounted for by feeding metabolism (total metabolism minus fasting metabolism). The energy budget at the maximum ration was: 100 C = 49.1F + 4.5U + 3.6R(fa) + 30.9R(fe) + 11.9G, where C, F, U, R(fa), R(fe) and G represent food consumption, faecal production, excretion, fasting metabolism, feeding metabolism and growth, respectively.

InAs self-organized nanostructures were grown with variant deposition thickness and growth rate on closely matched InAlAs/InP by molecular-beam epitaxy. The structural properties. of InAs and InAlAs layer were studied. It is found that the InAs morphology is insensitive to the growth conditions. Transmission electron microscopy and reflectance difference spectroscopy measurements show that the InAlAs matrix presents lateral composition modulation which gives birth to surface anisotropy. Based on the dependence of the InAs morphology on the anisotropy of the InAlAs layer, a modified Stranski-Krastanow growth mode is presented to describe the growth of the nanostructure on a composition-modulated surface.

InAs self-organized nanostructures in In0.52Al0.48As matrix have been grown on InP (001) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. The morphologies of the nanostructures are found to be strongly dependent on the growth rate of the InAs layer. By increasing the growth rate from 0.005 to 0.35 ML/s, the morphology of the nanostructure changes from wire to elongated dot and then changes back to wire again. Polarized photoluminescence of the InAs quantum wires and quantum dots are performed at 77 K, which are characterized by strong optical anisotropies. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

InAs quantum dots (QDs) were grown On Ultra-thin In0.15Ga0.85As strained layers by molecular beam epitaxy on GaAs (00 1) substrates. Combining reflection high-energy electron diffraction, atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, we analyzed the stress field of dislocations in the strained layer/substrate interface. Specially, we revealed the relative position of QDs and dislocations. We found that the difference of the stress field around dislocations is prominent when the strained layer is ultra-thin and the stress field will directly affect the following growth. On the strained layer surface, In0.15Ga0.85As ridges will form at the inclined upside of dislocations. Then, InAs QDs will prefer nucleating on the ridges, there is relatively small stress between InAs and In0.15Ga0.85As. By selecting ultra-thin In0.15Ga0.85As layer (50 nm) and controlling the QD layer at just form QDs, we obtained ordered InAs QDs. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A columnal islands system, which was composed of three layers of self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs), has been fabricated by solid-source molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) through S-K mode on a (100) semi-insulating GaAs substrate. The effects of the thickness of GaAs space layer, the growth interruption time and the amount of InAs deposition on the emission wavelength of columnal islands were presented. The image of atomic force microscopy (AFM) indicated the columnal islands with high uniformity in size and shape. At room temperature, the emission wavelength of columnal islands with different effective heights was achieved 1.32 and 1.4 mum; however, the emission wavelength of single-layer QDs with normal height was just 1. l mum. It provides a useful and intuitive approach to artificially control the emission wavelength of a QD material system.

The stability of the excellent permanent magnetic compound Nd2Fe14B and substitution of Fe in the compound by V, Cr, Mn, Zr and Nb are investigated by using interatomic pair potentials which are converted from lattice-inversion method. Calculation shows that the substitution always makes the cell volume larger, and the increase of the volume is almost linear with substituent concentration. The calculated cohesive energy shows that the preferential order of substitution of Fe is Nb, V, Cr, Mn, Zr. Nevertheless, all the five substituting elements should most preferentially replace Fe in the j(2)' site, which has the greatest space among all six Fe sites. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Thickness effect of immiscible alloy InAlAs as matrix layer on the morphology of InAs nanostructure grown on InAlAs/InP (0 0 1) by solid-source molecular-beam epitaxy has been studied. Experiments demonstrate that InAs nanostructure grown on thin InAlAs matrix layer forms randomly distributed quantum dot, whereas, grown on thick InAlAs matrix layer forms one-dimension ordered mixture of quantum wire and quantum dot. This drastic modification in the nanostructure morphology is attributed to the generation of composition modulation in the immiscible InAlAs alloy with the increase of the layer thickness. We investigate the development of cross-hatch grid surface morphology in growing mismatched layers and its effect on ordering growth of quantum dots (QDs). For a 60degrees dislocation (MD), the effective part in strain relaxation is the part with the Burgers vector parallel to the film/substrate interface within its b(edge) component; so the surface stress over a MD is asymmetric. When the strained layer is relatively thin, the surface morphology is cross-hatch grid with asymmetric ridges and valleys. When the strained layer is relatively thick, the ridges become nearly symmetrical, and the dislocations and the ridges inclined-aligned. In the following growth of InAs, QDs prefer to nucleate on top of the ridges. By selecting ultra-thin In0.15Ga0.85As layer (50nm) and controlling the QDs layer at just formed QDs, we obtained ordered InAs QDs. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Aluminium nitride (AlN) films grown with dimethylethylamine alane (DMEAA) are compared with the ones grown with trimethylaluminium (TMA). In the high-resolution x-ray diffraction Omega scans, the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of (0002) AlN films grown with DMEAA is about 0.70 deg, while the FWHM of (0002) AlN films grown with TMA is only 0.11 deg. The surface morphologies of the films are different, and the rms roughnesses of the surface are approximately identical. The rms roughness of AlN films grown with DMEAA is 47.4 nm, and grown with TMA is 69.4 nn. Although using DMEAA as the aluminium precursor cannot improve the AlN crystal quality, AlN growth can be reached at low temperature of 673 K. Thus, DMEAA is an alternative aluminium precursor to deposit AlN film at low growth temperatures.

Hexangular indium nitride nanoflower pattern is observed from scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The sample is grown on c-plane (0001) sapphire by metal organic chemical vapor deposition with intentional introduction of hydrogen gas. With the aid of hydrogen, a stable existence of metallic indium is achieved. This will induce the growth of InN nanoflowers via self-catalysis vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) process. It is found that the VLS process is modulated by the interface kinetics and thermodynamics among the sapphire substrate, indium, and InN, which leads to the special morphology of the authors' InN nanoflower pattern. A high density of 1.02 x 10(11) cm(-2) of InAs islands with In(0.15)Gao(0.85)As underlying layer has been achieved on GaAs (10 0) substrate by solid source molecular beam epitaxy. Atomic force microscopy and PL spectra show the size evolution of InAs islands. A 1.3 mum photoluminescence (PL) from InAs islands with In(0.15)Gao(0.85)As underlying layer and InGaAs strain-reduced layer has been obtained. Our results provide important information for optimizing the epitaxial structures of 1.3 mum wavelength quantum dots devices. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, a wide-band low noise amplifier, two mixers and a VCO with its buffers implemented in 50GHz 0.35 mu m SiGe BiCMOS technology for dual-conversion digital TV tuner front-end is presented. The LNA and up-converting mixer utilizes current injection technology to achieve high linearity. Without using inductors, the LNA achieves 0.1-1GHz wide bandwidth and 18.8-dB gain with less than 1.4-dB gain variation. The noise figure of the LNA is less than 5dB and its 1dB compression point is -2 dBm. The IIP3 of two mixers is 25-dBm. The measurement results show that the VCO has -127.27-dBc/Hz phase noise at 1-MHz offset and a linear gain of 32.4-MHz/V between 990-MHz and 1.14-GHz. The whole chip consume 253mW power with 5-V supply.
