Cobalt-doped ZnO (Zn1-xCoxO) thin films were fabricated by reactive magnetron cosputtering. The processing conditions were carefully designed to avoid the occurrence of Co precipitations. The films are c-axis oriented, and the solubility limit of Co in ZnO is less than 17%, determined by x-ray diffraction. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy measurements show Co ions have a chemical valance of 2+. In this paper, hysteresis loops were clearly observed for Zn1-xCoxO films at room temperature. The coercive field, as well as saturation magnetization per Co atom, decreases with increasing Co content, within the range of 0.07

Observation of room-temperature ferromagnetisin in Fe- and Ni-co-doped In2O3 samples (In0.9Fe0.1-xNix)(2)O-3 (0 <= x <= 0.1) prepared by citric acid sol-gel auto-igniting method is reported. All of the samples with intermediate x values are ferromagnetic at roomtemperature. The highest saturation magnetization (0.453 mu B/Fe + Ni ions) moment is reached in the sample with x = 0.04. The highest solubility of Fe and Ni ions in the In2O3 lattice is around 10 and 4 at%, respectively. The 10 at% Fe-doped sample is found to be weakly ferromagnetic, while the 10at% Ni-doped sample is paramagnetic. Extensive structure including Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), magnetic and magneto-transport including Hall effects studies on the samples indicate the observed ferromagnetism is intrinsic rather than from the secondary impurity phases. The structural and magnetic properties of Sm ion-implanted GaN with different Sm concentrations are investigated. XRD results do not show any peaks associated with second phase formation. Magnetic investigations performed by superconducting quantum interference device reveal ferromagnetic behavior with an ordering temperature above room temperature in all the implanted samples, while the effective magnetic moment per Sm obtained from saturation magnetization gives a much higher value than the atomic moment of Sm. These results could be explained by the phenomenological model proposed by Dhar et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 94(2005) 037205, Phys. Rev. B 72(2005) 245203] in terms of a long-range spin polarization of the GaN matrix by the Sm atoms.

Diluted magnetic nonpolar GaN:Cu films have been fabricated by implanting Cu ions into unintentionally doped nonpolar a-plane(1 1 (2) over bar 0) GaN films and a subsequent thermal annealing process. The structural, morphological and magnetic characteristics of the samples have been investigated by means of high-resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). The sample shows a clear ferromagnetism behavior at room temperature. It is significantly shown that with a Cu concentration as low as 0.75% the sample exhibits a saturation magnetization about 0.65 mu(B)/Cu atom. Moreover, the possible origin of the ferromagnetism for the sample was also discussed briefly. (C) 2009 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Diluted-magnetic nonpolar GaN:Cu films have been fabricated by implanting Cu ions into p-type nonpolar a-plane (1120) GaN films with a subsequent thermal annealing process. The impact of the implantation dose on the structural. morphological and magnetic characteristics of the samples have been investigated by means of high-resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD). atomic force microscopy (AFM), and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). The XRD and AFM analyses show that the structural and morphological characteristics of samples deteriorated with the increase of implantation dose. According to the SQUID analysis. obvious room-temperature ferromagnetic properties of samples were detected. Moreover, the saturation magnetization per Cu atom decreased as the implantation dose increased. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A systematic study of syntheses and magnetic properties of the Nd-3 Fe29-xCrx (x=4.5, 4.7, 5.0, and 5.5) compounds has been performed. The single-phase compounds of Nd3Fe29-xCrx can be formed in the range 4.5 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 5.5. The Curie temperature Tc, the saturation magnetization M-S at 4.2 K, the anisotropy field H-A at 4.2 K and room temperature, and the intra-sublattice exchange coupling parameter j(FeFe) at 4.2 K for the Nd3Fe29-xCrx compounds decrease with increasing Cr composition from x=4.5 to 5.5, respectively. Nitrogenation and carbonation, unlike hydrogenation, result mainly in improvements of the Curie temperature, the saturation magnetization and the anisotropy field at 4.2 K and room temperature for the Nd3Fe29-xCrx compounds compared with their parent compounds.

The crystallographic and intrinsic magnetic properties of hydride R3Fe29-xTxHy (R=Y, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, and Dy; T=V and Cr) have been investigated. The lattice constants and the unit cell volume of R3Fe29-xTxHy decrease with increasing R atomic number from Nd to Dy, except for Ce, reflecting the lanthanide contraction. Regular anisotropic expansions, mainly along the a- and b-axis rather than along the c-axis, are observed for all the compounds upon hydrogenation. Hydrogenation leads to an increase in Curie temperature. First-order magnetization processes (FOMP) occur in magnetic fields of around 1.5 T and 4.0 T at 4.2 K for Nd3Fe24.5Cr4.5H5.0 and Tb(3)Fc(27.0)Cr(2.0)H(2.8), and around 1.4 T at room temperature for Gd3Fe28.0Cr1.0H4.2 Abnormal crystallographic and magnetic properties of Ce3Fe29-xTxHy suggest that the Ce ion is non-triply ionized.

Sm3Fe26.7V2.3N4 nitrides and Sm3Fe26.7V2.3Cy carbides have been synthesized by gas-solid phase reaction. Their hard magnetic properties have been investigated by means of additional ball-milling at room temperature. The saturation magnetization of Sm3Fe26.7V2.3N4 almost decreases linearly with increasing ball-milling time t, but that of Sm3Fe26.7V2.3Cy has no obvious change when the ball-milling time increases from t = 1 to 28 h. As a preliminary result, the maximum remanence B-r of 0.94 and 0.88 T, the coercivity mu(0i)H(C) of 0.75 and 0.25 T, and the maximum energy product (BH) of 108.5 and 39.1 kJ/m(3) for their resin-bonded permanent magnets are achieved, respectively, by ball-milling at 293 K. A systematic study of the phase formation, structure and magnetic properties of the R3Fe29-xTx compounds (R=Y, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, and Dy; T=V and Cr) has been performed upon hydrogenation. Regular anisotropic expansions mainly along the a- and b-axis rather than along the c-axis are observed for all of the compounds upon hydrogenation. Hydrogenation leads to an increase in the Curie temperature and a corresponding increase in the saturation magnetization at room temperature for each compound. A systematic investigation of crystallographic and intrinsic magnetic properties of the hydrides R3Fe29 - xVxHy (R = Y, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, and Dy) has been performed in this work. The lattice constants a, b, and c and the unit cell volume of R3Fe29 - xVxHy decrease with increasing rare-earth atomic number from Nd to Dy, except for Ce, reflecting the lanthanide contraction. Hydrogenation results in regular anisotropic expansions along the a-, b-, and c-axes in this series of hydrides. Abnormal crystallographic and magnetic properties of Ce3Fe27.5V1.5H6.5, like Ce3Fe27.5V1.5, suggest that the Ce ion is non-triply ionized. Hydrogenation leads to the increase in both Curie temperature for all the compounds and in the saturation magnetization at 4.2 K and RT for R3Fe29 - xVx with R = Y, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, and Dy, except for Tb. Hydrogenation also leads to a decrease in the anisotropy field at 4.2 K and RT for R3Fe29 - xVx with R = Y, Ce, Nd, Gd, Tb, and Dy, except for Sm. The Ce3Fe27.5V1.5 and Gd3Fe28.4V0.6 show the larger storage of hydrogen with y = 6.5 and 6.9 in these hydrides. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A systematic study of the structural and intrinsic magnetic properties of the hydrides R3Fe29-xCrxHy (R = Y, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, and Dy) has been performed. Hydrogenation lends to a relative volume expansion of the unit cell and a decrease in x-ray density for each compound. Anisotropic expansions mainly along the n- and b-axes rather than along the c-axis for all of the compounds upon hydrogenation are observed. The lattice constants and the unit-cell volume of R3Fe29-xCrx and R3Fe29-xCrxHy decrease with increasing R atomic number from Nd to Dy, except for Ce, reflecting the lanthanide contraction. Hydrogenation results in an increase in the Curie temperature and a corresponding increase in the saturation magnetization at room temperature for each compound. After hydrogenation a decrease of 0.34 mu(B)/Fe in the average Fe atomic magnetic moment and a slight increase in the anisotropy field for Y3Fe27.2Cr1.8 are achieved at 4.2 K. First-order magnetization processes (FOMP) occur in magnetic fields of around 1.5 T and 4.0 T at 4.2 K for Nd3Fe24.5Cr4.5H5.0 and TD3Fe27.0Cr2.0H2.8, and around 1.4 T at room temperature for Gd3Fe28.0Cr1.0H4.2. The abnormal crystallographic and magnetic properties of Ce3Fe25.0Cr4.0 and Ce3Fe25.0Cr4.0H5.4 suggest that the Ce ion non-triply ionized.

Diluted-magnetic GaN:Sm:Eu films have been fabricated by co-implantation of Sm and Eu ions into c-plane (0001) GaN films and a subsequent annealing process. The structural, morphological and magnetic characteristics of the samples have been investigated by means of high-resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). The XRD and AFM analyses show that the annealing process can effectively recover the crystalline degradation caused by implantation. Compared with GaN:Sm films, more defects have been introduced into GaN:Sm:Eu films due to the Eu implantation process. According to the SQUID analysis, GaN:Sm:Eu films exhibit clear room-temperature ferromagnetism. Moreover, GaN:Sm:Eu films show a lower saturation magnetization (Ms) than GaN:Sm films.
