New titanium complexes with two nonsymmetric bidentate beta-enaminoketonato (N,O) ligands (4a-e), [(Ph)NC(R-2)C(H)C(R-1)O](2)TiCl2, have been synthesized. X-ray crystal structure reveals that complex 4a has a C-2-symmetric conformation with a distorted octahedral geometry around the titanium center. With modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO) as a cocatalyst, complexes 4a-e are active catalysts for ethylene polymerization at room temperature, producing high molecular weight polyethylenes bearing linear structures. The 4a,b/MMAO catalyst systems exhibit the characteristics of a quasi-living polymerization of ethylene, producing polyethylenes with narrow molecular weight distributions. Moreover, the 4a-d/MMAO catalyst systems are also capable of promoting the quasi-living copolymerization of ethylene with norbornene at room temperature, yielding high molecular weight alternating copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions. The quasi-living nature of the catalysts allows the synthesis of new A-B polyethylene-block-poly(ethylene-conorbornene) diblock copolymer.

Ethylene polymerization was carried out with zirconocene catalysts supported on montmorillonite (or functionalized montmorillonite). The functionalized montmorillonite was from simple ion exchange of [CH3O2CCH2NH3](+) (MeGlyH(+)) ions with interlamellar cations of layered montmorillonites. The functionalized montmorillonlites [high-purity montmorillonite (MMT)-MeGlyH(+)] had larger interlayer spacing (12.69 Angstrom) than montmorillonites without treatment (9.65 Angstrom). The zirconocene catalyst system [Cp2ZrCl2/methylaluminoxane (MAO)/MMT-MeGlyH(+)] had much higher Zr loading and higher activities than those of' other zirconocene catalyst systems (Cp2ZrCl2/MMT, Cp2ZrCl2/MMT-MeGlyH(+), Cp2ZrCl2/MAO/MMT, [CP2ZrCl](+)[BF4]/MMT, [Cp2ZrCl][BF4](-)/MMT-MeGlyH(+), [CP2ZrCl](+)[BF4](-)/MAO/MMT-MeGlyH(+), and [Cp2ZrCl](+)[BF4](-)/MAO/MMT). The polyethylenes with good bulk density were obtained from the catalyst systems, particularly (CP2ZrCl2/MAO/MMT-MeGlyH(1)). MeGlyH(+) and MAO seemed to play important roles for preparation of the supported zirconocenes and polymerization of ethylene. The difference in Zr loading and catalytic activity among the supported zirconocene catalysts is discussed.

The development in the oxidation of olefins to ketones catalyzed by palladium compounds was reviewed. Some improved methods for the oxidation of olefins catalyzed by Wacker-type catalyst systems are also summarized. For this reaction, some new catalyst systems and the reaction mechanism are described. Emphasis has been given to the applications of Pd(I)/HPA(heteropoly acid), Pd(I)/FePc (iron phthalocyanine), Pd (I)/HQ (hydroquinone)/FePc, Pd (I)/HQ/HPA, Pd (I)/CuSO4/HPA catalyst systems in the oxidation of olefins to ketones; the application of Pd(I)/LCoNO2, PdCl2 (MeCN)(2)/CuCl, Pd(OAc)(2)/ pyridine, fluorous biphasic catalyst systems in the oxidation of olefins to ketones is also surveyed.

By using different catalyst systems, two trans-1,4-polybutadiene (TPBD) samples with different tr trans-content and molecular weight were synthesized. The phase transition of two samples from monoclinic form to hexagonal phase was revealed by differential calorimeter scanning and X-ray, respectively. The small-angle X-ray scattering measurements showed the remarkable discrepancy of phase transition and melting point between the two samples was attributed to the different lamellar thickness of crystals: The crystals with different crystalline morphology and lamellar thickness were developed by casting different concentration TPBD solutions. Transmission electron microscopy morphology observations proved that annealing the specimen at the temperature above the phase transition point for different times resulted in the different lamellae thickening of monoclinic form. It means that annealing the TPBD in its hexagonal phase will also slightly favor the increase of both the phase transition temperature and melting point of hexagonal phase. The polymerization of butadiene(Bd), isoprene(Ip) and styrene(St) has been examined using the six catalyst systems composed of lanthanocene, (C5H9Cp)(2)NdCl(I), (C5H9Cp)(2)SmCl(II), (MeCp)(2)SmOAr'(III), (Ind)(2)NdCl(IV), Me2Si(Ind)(2)NdCl(V) and (Flu)(2)NdCl(VI), and methylaluminoxane(MAO) respectively. All of them can be used to form the polyisoprene with molecular weights of 1 to 10 thousand and cis-1,4-unit contents of 41 to 47%. (I), (II) and (III) of them can be also used to form the polybutadiene with molecular weights of 10 to 20 thousand and cis-1,4-unit contents of 62 to 78%. In addition, the catalysts from (II) to (V) are still active for St polymerization and (II) of them gives a syndio -rich random polystyrene. It is noteworthy that (II) and (III) are active for homopolymerization of Bd, Ip and St in the same polymerization condition.

Oxidative dehydroaromatization of propylene was investigated by the pulse technique over two kinds of single oxide catalysts. With the Bi2O3 catalyst, the main dimer product was 1,5-hexadiene, and the dimerization activity was stable to pulse number even if the catalyst was partly reduced to the bulk. With the CeO2 catalyst, benzene was mainly formed instead of 1,5-hexadiene, but the activity decreased rapidly with increasing pulse number, indicating that only the lattice oxygen near the catalyst surface could be used for oxidative dimerization and the further aromatization. The Bi-Ce-O system catalyst was found in this study to give higher aromatization activity and showed better stability, compared to the Bi-Sn-O catalyst. Although the Bi-Ce-O catalyst was only a mixture of the two component oxides from X-ray diffraction analysis, there was a significant combination effect on the selectivity to benzene. The highest and the most stable selectivity of benzene was obtained at Bi/Ce = 1. In the TPD spectrum of Bi-Ce-O catalyst, there are not only the lattice oxygen (beta-oxygen) over 620-degrees-C due to the reduction of Bi2O3, but also a great deal of the alpha-oxygen desorbed about 400-degrees-C, which is considered the absorbed oxygen in the bulk. This absorbed oxygen could probably be a compensation of the lattice oxygen through the route of gaseous --> absorbed --> lattice oxygen in the binary catalyst system. By the kinetic study on the Bi-Ce-O catalyst, the dimer formation rate was the first-order with respect to the partial pressure of propylene and zero-order of oxygen. Although detail investigation would be made further, it was considered that the complete oxidation of propylene would mainly take place parallelly on some different sites, and the rate-determining step of propylene dimerization occurred probably between an adosrbed propylene and a gaseous one by an Eley-Rideal type mechanism.

The low-cost and commercially available (-)-ephedrine hydrochloride was firstly employed in the [RuCl2(1)-cymene)](2)-catalyzed asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of prochiral ketones in water. The reaction could be performed in the open air at rt, affording excellent yields (up to 99%) and good enantioselectivities (up to 83% ee). It provided a further step toward the discovery of simplified catalyst systems for eventual availability. (c) 2005 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

The kinetics of the polymerization of isoprene with the heterogeneous rare earth catalyst system isopropoxyneodymium dichloride/triethylaluminium (Nd(OPri)Cl-2-AlEt(3)) was examined in a specially designed dilatometer. The rate of polymerization is expressed as R(p) approximate to -d[M]/dt = k'(p)[Nd](1.40)[M]. The main kinetical parameters such as the concentration of active propagating chain, the efficiency of lanthanide catalyst used (ELCU), the absolute rate constant of propagation as well as the average life time of growing chains, were determined at 30 degrees C, 40 degrees C, 45 degrees C and 50 degrees C.

Colloidal crystals formed by two types of polystyrene particles of different sizes (94 and 141 nm) at various number ratios (94:141 nm) are studied. Experiments showed that the formation time of crystals lengthens as the number ratio of the two components approaches 1:1. The dependence of the mean interparticle distance (D-0), crystal structure and alloy structure on the number ratio of the two types of particles was Studied by means of Kossel diffraction technique and reflection spectra. The results showed that as the number ratio decreased, the mean interparticle distance (D-0) became larger. And the colloidal crystal in binary mixtures is more preferably to form the bcc structure. This study found that binary systems form the substitutional solid solution (sss)-type alloy structure in all cases except when the number ratio of two types of particles is 5:1, which results instead in the superlattice structure. In order to realize super-resolution in the 4Pi-confocal systems, the annular binary pure phase filter is designed with the vector diffraction theory. The relations between the super-resolved parameters, such as S, G(T), G(A), and the radial position theta(i) of each zone, are obtained. For simple illumination of the design procedure, three-zone binary pure phase filters are studied, and several numerical simulation results show that in the 4Pi-confocal system with the properly designed binary pure phase filter the super-resolution can be realized with low sidelobes.

A series of binary borosilicate glasses prepared by the sol-gel method are shown to be bioactive. Tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and trimethylborate (TMB) in acidic medium are used to prepare xB(2)O(3)center dot(1-x)SiO2 glass systems for x = 0.045-0.167. The formation of a layer of apatite-like mineral on the glass surface becomes apparent after soaking in simulated body fluid for 48 h. We have measured the B-11-B-11 homonuclear second moments of the borosilicate glasses and inferred that no macroscopic phase separation occurred in our glasses. The B-11 chemical shift data also show that the formation of clustered boroxol rings is negligible in our glass system. Although the bioactivity of our borosilicate glasses is less than that of CaO-SiO2 sol-gel glasses, these simple binary systems could be taken as reference glass systems for the search of new bioactive borosilicate glasses. This paper proposes compact adders that are based on non-binary redundant number systems and single-electron (SE) devices. The adders use the number of single electrons to represent discrete multiple-valued logic state and manipulate single electrons to perform arithmetic operations. These adders have fast speed and are referred as fast adders. We develop a family of SE transfer circuits based on MOSFET-based SE turnstile. The fast adder circuit can be easily designed by directly mapping the graphical counter tree diagram (CTD) representation of the addition algorithm to SE devices and circuits. We propose two design approaches to implement fast adders using SE transfer circuits the threshold approach and the periodic approach. The periodic approach uses the voltage-controlled single-electron transfer characteristics to efficiently achieve periodic arithmetic functions. We use HSPICE simulator to verify fast adders operations. The speeds of the proposed adders are fast. The numbers of transistors of the adders are much smaller than conventional approaches. The power dissipations are much lower than CMOS and multiple-valued current-mode fast adders. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We continue the study of spiking neural P systems by considering these computing devices as binary string generators: the set of spike trains of halting computations of a given system constitutes the language generated by that system. Although the "direct" generative capacity of spiking neural P systems is rather restricted (some very simple languages cannot be generated in this framework), regular languages are inverse-morphic images of languages of finite spiking neural P systems, and recursively enumerable languages are projections of inverse-morphic images of languages generated by spiking neural P systems.

Catalytic activity of Pt catalysts for soot oxidation was studied using temperature programmed reactions. The activity of Pt loaded over TiO2-SiO2 (Pt/TiO2-SiO2) showed higher activity than other Pt/MOx systems (MOx = TiO2, ZrO2, SiO2, Al2O3. TiO2-ZrO2. TiO2-Al2O3, ZrO2-SiO2, ZrO2-Al2O3, SiO2-Al2O3). The activity was highest when the molar ratio of TiO2/(TiO2 + SiO2) ranged from 0.4 to 0.7. The effect of pretreatment with a gas containing low SO2 concentrations on the activity was compared for Pt/SiO2, Pt/TiO2 and Pt/TiO2-SiO2. In the case of Pt/TiO2-SiO2, the activity was markedly promoted by the pretreatment whereas no variation in the activity was observed for Pt/SiO2. The difference in the behavior towards the SO, pretreatment was attributed to property difference in the supports for sulfate accumulation. The high activity of Pt/TiO2-SiO2 was also confirmed under practical conditions with a diesel engine exhaust using a catalyst-supported diesel particulate filter (DPF). (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. The transient state (as the defined point where no enantioseparation is obtained in a dual chiral selector system) of chiral recognition of aminoglutethimide in a binary mixture of neutral cyclodextrins (CDs) was studied by capillary electrophoresis (CE). The following three dual selector systems were used: alpha-cyclodextrin (alpha-CD) and beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD); alpha-CD and heptakis(di-O-methyl-beta-cyclodextrin) (DM-beta-CD); alpha-CD and heptakis(tri-O-methyl-beta-cyclodextrin) (TM-beta-CD). The S-(-) enantiomer of the analyte was more strongly retained in the presence of either alpha-CD or TM-beta-CD at pH 2.5, 100 mM phosphate buffer, while the R-(+) enantiomer was more strongly retained in the presence of either P-CD or DM-P-CD. In the more simple case, the elution order is invariably kept if the enantiomers have the same elution order in either one of the two hosts of the binary mixture. In contrast, the elution order may be switched by varying the concentration ratio of two hosts that produce opposite elution order for this particular analyte. In such a dual selector system, the enantioselectivity will disappear at the transient state at a certain ratio of host,:host, Moreover, the migration times of the two enantiomers with host, alone (diluted in buffer) is approximately equal to the migration times at the corresponding concentration of host, alone (diluted in buffer), where the ratio of concentrations of host,:host, is the same as in the binary mixture at the transient state. As found by nuclear magnetic resonance experiments, the analyte is forming a 1:1 complex with either one of the CDs applied. From this finding, a theoretical model based on the mobility difference of the two enantiomers was derived that was used to simulate the transient state. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.
