The gas-phase ion-molecule reactions of C-60 with the plasma generated from methyl acrylate under self-chemical ionization conditions were studied by use of a triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer. The adduct cation [C60C3H3O](+) and protonated molecular ion [C60H](+) were observed as the major product ions. The former adduct ion is formed by electrophilic reaction of C-60 with the ion [CH2=CHCO](+), a main fragment ion resulting from the methyl acrylate molecular ion [CH2=CHCOOCH3](+) through alpha cleavage. The latter ion is generated by proton transfer from protonated methyl acrylate to C-60. Semi-empirical quantum chemical calculations have been performed for the eight possible isomers of [C60C3H3O](+) at the Hartree-Fock level by use of the AMI method. The results show three types of cycloadducts as the most stable structures among the possible isomers.

The ion-molecule reactions of disubstituted benzenes under chemical ionization conditions with acetyl chloride as reagent gas were examined, and the fragmentation reactions of the adduct ions (mostly proton and acetyl ion adducts) were studied by collision-induced dissociation. Electron-releasing substituents favored the adduct reactions, and electron-withdrawing groups did not. The position and properties of substituting groups had an effect on the relative abundances of the adduct ions. Several examples of the ortho effect were observed. The fragmentation reaction of the adduct ions formed by ortho-benzenediamine with the acetyl ion was similar to the reductive alkylation reaction of amines in the condensed phase. Novel macrocyclic oligomers were synthesized through the condensation of phenolphthalein and m-phthaloyl-dichloride with triethylamine as catalyst in the mixed solution of methylene chloride and THF via pseudo-high-dilution technique. The oligomers were characterized by IR, H-1 NMR, MS, WAXD, TGA and DSC. It was found that the 3 : 3 adduct (molar ratio of phenolphthalein to m-phthaloyl-dichloride) and the 4 : 4 adduct were the main products and there was a small amount of crystalline in the macrocyclic mixtures. When the mixtures were heated to 360 degrees C, the crystalline disappeared.

The gas-phase ion-molecule reactions of C-60 with the methoxymethyl ion [CH3O=CH2](+) and the 1-hydroxyethyl ion [CH3CH=OH](+) generated under the self-chemical-ionization (self-CI) conditions of alkyl methyl ethers and primary alcohols were studied in the ion source of a mass spectrometer. The adduct ions [C60C2H5O](+) and protonated molecules [C60H](+) were observed as the major products of C-60 with the plasma of alkyl methyl ethers. On the contrary, the reactions of C-60 With the plasmas of primary alcohols produced few corresponding adduct ions. The AM1 semiempirical molecular orbital calculations were carried out on 14 possible structures. The calculated results showed that the most stable structure among the possible isomers of [C60C2H5O](+) is the [3+2] cycloadduct. According to experimental and theoretical results, the pathway for the formation of the adduct was presented.

Acetone and dimethyl ether( DME) have been shown to be reagent gases of exceptional utitlity and versatility for the characterization of a variety of class of organic compounds. The fragmentation mechanisms of the adduct product ions, formed by ion/molceule reaction of the substrate with the ionized gases, have been studied and substantiated by experiments with acetone-d(6) and DME-d(6).

Electrospray ionization (ESI) combined with multiple-stage tandem mass spectrometry (MSn) was used to directly analyze the glycolipid mixture from bacteria Bacillus pumilus without preliminary separation. Full scan ESI-MS revealed the composition of picomole quantities of glycerolglycolipid species containing C-14-C-19 fatty acids, some of which were monounsaturated, Two main components were identified from their molecular masses and fragmentation pathways. The fragmentation pathway of the known compound compared with the investigated compound verified the proposed structure as 1(3)-acyl-2-pentadecanoyl-3(1)-O-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->6)-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl]-sn-glycerols. A comparison of the multiple tandem mass spectra of the different alkali-metal cation adducts indicates that the intensity of fragments and the dissociation pathways are dependent on the alkali-metal type, The basic structures of glycerolglycolipids were reflected clearly from the fragmentation patterns of the sodium cations, The intense fragments of the sugar residue from the precursor ions were obtained from the lithiated adduct ions. ESI-MSn spectra of [M + K](+) ions did not provide as much fragmentation as [M + Na](+) and [M + Li](+) adducts, but their spectra allow the position of glycerol acylation to be determined. On the basis of MS2 spectra of[M + K](+) ions, it was established that all components have a C-15:0 fatty acid at the sn-2 position of the glycerol backbone and C-14-C-19 acids at the sn-1 position of the glycerol backbone. Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry is difficult for the characterization of noncovalent complexes hitherto because of the limitations in acidic matrix, sample preparation, laser-induced polymerization and adduct formation with matrix. Under our experimental conditions, sinapinic acid is used as a matrix, the specific noncovalent interactions of protein with fullerenols were observed by MALDI mass spectrometry. Some mass spectrometric features, such as mass shifts, broad adduct peaks and stoichiometries, showed that the specific non-covalent complexes between protein and fullerenols have been formed at a ratio of 1 : 4 for hemoglobin-fullerenols or 1 : 1 for myoglobin-fullerenols. The results implied that fullereneols could be used to protect partly hemoglobin from decomposition in acidic media, and therefore, it is possible to realize the molecular weight determination of a quaternary protein by MALDI mass spectrometry via the addition of specific organic compound in the matrix.

The pentamethylcyclopentadienyl iridium complexes Cp*Ir(PMe3)(E-n) (E = S, n = 4, 5 or 6; E = Se, n = 2 or 4 E = Te, n = 2) react with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate to give Cp*Ir(PMe3)[E2C2(COOMe)(2)] compounds which tend to lose the trimethylphosphine ligand; the molecular structure of the dithiolene derivative, Cp*Ir[S2C2(COOMe)(2)], has been determined.

Gas-phase ion-molecule reactions of buckminsterfullerene (C-60) with the ion systems generated from the self-chemical-ionization of alkyl methyl ethers(CH3OCnH2n+1, n =2 , 3, 4) were studied in the ion source of a mass spectrometer. The adduct cation [C60C2H5O](+) and protonated molecular ion [C60H](+) were observed as the major products, The former was produced by the reactions.of C-60 with the methoxymethyl ion [CH3O = CH2](+) , the latter corresponded to the proton transfer reactions from the protonated alkyl methyl ethers to C60 It is suggested that the [3+2] cycloadduct is the most favorable structure among the probable isomers with special chemical properties, Our investigation provides the guidance for the synthesis of this compound in condensed phase.

A successful analysis of silver was reported utilizing laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LDI/TOF-MS) in this paper, The silver cluster ions Ag-n(+) and AgnO+ (n=2 similar to 5) were formed during laser desorption/ionization. In the presence of I-, K+ and Na+, the peaks corresponding, to the cluster ions [AgnIn-1](+) (n=2 similar to 6) and the adduct ions [AgI](+), [AgI]Na+ and [AgI]K+ were observed in the positive ion spectrum; the peaks corresponding to [AgnIn+1](-) (n=1 similar to 3) were found in the negative ion spectrum, all of which accompanied by sliver isotope distribution, The formation of silver cluster ions was accomplished through two-stage reaction: the first step was the generation of clusters, which was followed by the processes of photoionization and ion/molecule reaction.

Ion-molecule reactions of four isomeric cyclopropane derivatives were investigated under chemical ionization(CI) conditions, using methane, acetone and vinyl acetate as reagent gases, The methane positive-ion CI mass spectra of each of two isomer pairs 1,2 and 3,4 are identical, and so are the collision-induced dissociation (CTD) spectra of the protonated molecules of each of the two isomer pairs, The protonation reactions for the isomer pairs 1,2 and 3,4 occurred on the sites of the carboxyl groups and the R groups, respectively, Differences between isomers 1 and 2 are observed in their acetone (A) positive-ion CI mass spectra and in the CID spectra of their adduct ions ([M+H+A](+)), The adduct ions of compounds 2, 3 and 4 with protonated acetone and with protonated acetone dimer are observed in their CI mass spectra, However, only the adduct ions of compound 1 with protonated acetone appear in its CI mass spectrum, The protonated dimers of each of the four compounds are found in their vinyl acetate positive-ion CI mass spectra, and the CID spectra of these dimers for isomers 1 and 2 can also reflect their stereostructural difference. Gas phase adduct of endohedral rare-earth fullerenes Nd@C-S2 with the ion system of benzene-[Nd@C-S2-C6H6](+) was observed for the first time by ion-molecular reaction under chemical ionization condition. The possible reaction passageway and molecular structures of this gas phase adduct were discussed and a parallel "reversed umbrella" pi-pi interaction complex of the [C6H6](+) ion reacting with the neutral rare-earth fullerenes Nd@C-S2 was considered to be much reasonable. The experimental result indicated that endohedral rare-earth fullerenes has relatively active reactivity and aromatic properties similar towards benzene molecular ion in gas phase.

A Co(salen)-Nafion modified electrode was prepared by immersing a glassy carbon electrode coated with the Nafion film into the aqueous solution with saturated Co(salen), The modified electrode showed a stable electrochemical reaction of Co(salen) at about 0 V(vs, SCE), The result of XPS indicated the valence of cobalt in Co(salen) changes from +2 before to +3 after Co(salen) enters the Nafion film, It is due to forming axis coordination of cobalt with sulfonic group in Nafion film, It was found that the mode of electron transfer in Co(salen)-Nafion modified electrode was controlled by physical diffusion and electron hopping, It was also found that the modified electrode could catalyze the reduction of O-2 to H2O2. The real catalyst may be the adduct of Co-I(salen) and O-2.

The axial coordination effect of F- on the redox behavior of (TPP)Co was investigated and spectroeletrochemistry in dichloroethane. It was verified that mono(F-) axial adduct (TPP)Co(II)(F-) could be reduced at 0.1 V(SCE). and bis(F-) axis adduct (TPP)Co(II)(F-)(2) formed with added F- molar ratio>1 could be reduced at the potential <-0.6 V(SCE). The equilibrium between (TPP)Co(II)(F-) and (TPP)Co(II)(F-)(2) was demonstrated.
