Supported nickel catalyst (Ni-Cat) was used as a catalyst to improve the flame retarclancy of intumescent flame-retardants (IFR) systems based on ammonium polyphosphate and pentaerythritol (PETOL) in polypropylene (PP) matrix. Limited oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 rating, and thermogravimetric analysis were used to characterize the flame retardancy and thermal stability of the PP systems, and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to analyze the microstructure and composition of the chars formed during measuring LOI value and after combustion at 800 degrees C. The catalytic effect of NiCat was shown in an increase of LOI, a change in the char microstructure, and improvement of the thermal stability in the PP systems, which result from the synergistic effect of Ni-Cat and IFR. The results from FE-SEM and FTIR spectra of the char can explain how this synergistic effect happened.

The stability constants and species distributions of complexes of two lanthanide ions, Eu (III) and Tb(III), with a macrocyclic ligand, 3,6, 9, 17 20, 23-hexaazo-29, 30-dihydroxy-13, 27-dimethyl-tricylco-[23,3,1,1(11,15)] triaconta-1 (28) 11,13,15 (30), 25 26-hexane (BDBPH), in 1: 1 and 2: 1 system, were determined potentiometrically in 50% ethanol solution, at 35.0 degrees C and I = 0.100 mol/L (KCl). The two metal ions could form deprotonated mono- or dinuclear complexes with BDBPH with high stability after the three protons of the ligand completely neutralized. At higher pH values, Eu(M) could not form hydroxo complexes with BDBPH, while Tb(III) could form hydroxo complexes in the types of M2L(OH) M2L(OH)(2) and M2L (OH)(2). The kinetic study on the hydrolysis reaction of his (4-nitrophenyl) phosphate (BNPP) catalyzed by Tb-BDBPH system (2:1) was carried out in aqueous solution (pH 7.0 similar to 10.0) at 35 degrees C with I = 0.1000 mol/L (KCl). The second-order rate constant k(BNPP) (2.3 x 10(-3) (mol/L)(-1)center dot s(-1)) was determined. The dinuclear monohydroxo species, L-Tb-2-OH, is kinetically active species.

To simplify the abstraction of descriptors, for the correlation analysis of the stability constants of gadolinium(III) complexes and their ligand structures, aiming at gadolinium(III) complexes, we only considered the ligands and ignored the common parts of the structures, i.e., the metal ions. Quantum-chemical descriptors and topological indices were calculated to describe the structures of the ligands. Multiple regression analysis and neural networks were applied to construct the models between the ligands and the stability constants of gadolinium(III) complexes and satisfactory results were obtained.

Two rare earth heteropolymetalates K9GdW10O36 and K-11[Gd(PW11O39)(2)] have been synthesized and characterized by IR and elemental analysis. Their stability has been studied by TG - DTA. The TG - DTA analysis show that both complexes are of good thermal stability. Their relaxivity in D2O is 6.89 and 5.27 mmol(-1).s(-1) respectively. Interaction with BSA has also been investigated. The results indicate that the two rare earth heteropolymetalate may be potential contrast agent for MRI.

Valence stability and change of Eu(II) in oxides have been studied by luminescence spect a. The results show that the valence stability and change of Eu(II)in oxides is closely related to the radius and electric charge of positive ions substituted by Eu(II) and crystal structure of the host such as Al2O3 which can form alpha-Al2O3 single phase and alpha-Al2O3 and gamma-Al2O3 mixed phases under different reaction temperatures. A, fairly good explanation is made by the proposed relation between energy coefficient and crystal structure for the first time to the observed experiment results. if the energy coefficients of substitution ions is more than that of Eu(II), the lattice substitution of Eu(II)for these ions is not occured generally and valence stare of Eu(II)is not stable and be easily changed into Eu(III). The lattice of gamma-Al2O3 can stablize the valence state of Eu(II)within certain coped concentration and in alpha-Al2O3 crystal lattice Eu(II)can be easily changed into Eu(III).

Stability and luminescence properties of Tb (III) complexes with adrenaline have been studied. The Tb (III) complexes with adrenaline are quite stable. The fluorescence spectra of the Tb (III) complexes with adrenaline show the characteristic fluorescence bands of Tb (III) ions which are attributed to energy transfer from ligands to Tb (III) ions.

The thermal and chemical stabilities of Mo/Si multilayer structure used in Bragg-Fresnel optics were studied to get optimal technological parameters of pattern generation. Mo/Si multilayers were annealed at temperature ranging from 360 to 770 K, treated with acetone and 5 parts per thousand NaOH solution, and characterized by small-angle x-ray diffraction technique as well as x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Olympus microscopy.

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) has never been reported to form a network structure when subjected to high energy radiation. Results obtained in this work indicates that when irradiation is performed under 330-340-degrees-C in vacuo PTFE can be crosslinked

The spectrochemistry of Eu2+-doped perovskite KMgF3 was examined and discussed. Eu2+ can replace some of the K+ in the KMgF3 crystal, and simultaneously the corresponding cation hole can be compensated with the F- or O2- in the matrix. The emission intensity of Eu2+ due to the f --> f transition increased when Na+, Rb+ or F- was doped in KMgF3:Eu2+. Two mechanisms of charge compensation were proposed. No obvious valence change of Eu2+ occurred in KMgF3:Eu2+ after calcinating at high temperature, e.g. 900-degrees-C. It was found that the valence stability of Eu2+ improved after incorporation into the matrix.

In this work, the effects of radiation on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) samples with different crystallinity were studied. Using Suwa's equation for calculating the number-average molecular weight of PTFE, the radiation-induced reduction in molecular weight was followed and the G values for scission of PTFE were also obtained on the basis of the changes in molecular weight. The G(scission) for as-polymerized PTFE was 2.15 +/- 0.01, whereas for sintered sample, which has a relative low crystallinity, G(scission) = 6.0 +/- 0.14.

By examining the changes in melting temperature, heat of fusion, tensile strength and ultimate elongation at 150-degrees-C, and weight loss, radiation effects on perfluoroalkoxy resins (PFA) were investigated. The results show that at the temperatures used here the predominant effect caused by radiation on PFA is degradation of the molecular weight. The radiation stability is much better than that of polytetrafluoroethylene, however.
