Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and density techniques have been used to investigate the structural parameters of the solid state of Nylon 11 annealed at different temperatures. The equilibrium heat of fusion Delta H-m(0) and equilibrium melting temperature T-m(0) were estimated to be 189.05 J g(-1) and 202.85 degrees C respectively by using the Hoffman-Weeks approach. The degree of crystallinity (W-c,W-x) ranged approximately 24-42% was calculated by WAXD and compared with those by calorimetry (W-c,W-h) and density (W-c,W-d) measurements. The radius of gyration R-g, crystalline thickness L-c, noncrystalline thickness L-a, long period L, semiaxes of the particles (a, b), electron-density difference between the crystalline and noncrystalline regions eta(c) - eta(a), and the invariant Q increased with increasing annealing temperature. The analysis of the SAXS data was based upon the particle characteristic function and the one-dimensional electron-density correlation function. An interphase region existed between the crystalline and noncrystalline region with a clear dimension of about 2 nm for semicrystalline Nylon 11. Instead of the traditional two-phase model, a three-phase model has been proposed to explain these results by means of SAXS.

The crystal transitions of Nylon 11 annealed and drawn at different temperatures (T-d) with different drawing ratios (n) were investigated by wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). The alpha -form of Nylon Il could be transformed from the delta'-form by annealing at high temperature, The results showed that the crystal transitions of Nylon 11 strongly depended on the thermal history and the conditions of drawing. The delta'-form Nylon Il could he gradually transformed into the alpha -form when it was drawn at high temperature and the alpha -form was only partly transformed into the delta'-form when it was drawn at low temperature. This should be due to the effect of the competition between thermal inducement and drawing inducement. The thermal inducement was favorable to producing the alpha -form, while the drawing inducement was favorable to producing the delta'-form. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Conformation transformation of syndiotactic polypropylene(sPP) induced by stretching and annealing processes has been investigated by WAXD, IR and DSC, The results indicate that not only the quenched samples but also the isothermally crystallized samples can form the crystals with all-trans conformation by means of uniaxially stretching at room temperature. The all-trans conformation crystals are of metastability, which can transform to stable crystals with (TTGG)(2) helical conformation at higher annealing temperatures.

Structural studies of poly(aryl ether ether ketone ketone) (PEEKK) using small-angle X-ray scattering and one-dimensional electron density correlation function methods revealed that its aggregated state structure was significantly influenced by the annealing temperature. The long period L, the average thickness of the lamellae d, the electron density difference between the crystalline and amorphous regions eta(c) - eta(a), and the invariant Q increased with increasing annealing temperature, but it was opposite to the case of the specific inner surfaces O-s. A transition zone existed between the traditional "two phases" with a dimension about 0.5 nm for semicrystalline PEEKK. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 69: 1829-1835, 1998.

Shrinkage, retractive stress, and infrared dichroism of the drawn low-density polyethylene (LDPE) as-drawn and irradiated by Co-60-ray have been measured under different annealing conditions. The shrinkage and the disorientation of the irradiated sample was undergone more rapidly than that of unirradiated one as the temperature was continuously increased, surpassing a certain value, and a higher degree of shrinkage and disorientation was achieved finally for the irradiated sample when the samples were annealed with free ends. For the samples heated isothermally with fixed ends, the retractive stress went through a maximum and then attenuated to a limited value, and the degree of such a stress attenuation for the unirradiated sample was much more than that for the irradiated sample. These results show that the taut tie molecules (TTMs) in drawn PE can relax by the pulling of chain segments out of crystal blocks that they anchored in at elevated temperatures higher than the a transition and also by the displacing of microfibrils if the samples were annealed with free ends. The cross-links produced by irradiation prohibit the former process. It was further observed that the dependence of the average extinction coefficient of the band at 2016 cm-1 on that of the band at 1894 cm-1 is related to irradiation and annealing conditions, which has also been explained by the relaxation of TTMs and the function of irradiation-induced cross-linking on the relaxation.

The structural evolution and property changes in Nd60Al10Fe20Co10 bulk metallic glass (BMG) upon crystallization are investigated by the ultrasonic method, x-ray diffraction, density measurement, and differential scanning calorimetry. The elastic constants and Debye temperature of the BMG are obtained as a function of annealing temperature. Anomalous changes in ultrasonic velocities, elastic constants, and density are observed between 600–750 K, corresponding to the formation of metastable phases as an intermediate product in the crystallization process. The changes in acoustic velocities, elastic constants, density, and Debye temperature of the BMG relative to its fully crystallized state are much smaller, compared with those of other known BMGs, the differences being attributed to the microstructural feature of the BMG.

Ferromagnetic semiconductor MnxGa1-xSb single crystals were fabricated by Mn-ions implantation, deposition, and the post annealing. Magnetic hysteresis-loops in the MnxGa1-xSb single crystals were obtained at room temperature (300 K). The structure of the ferromagnetic semiconductor MnxGa1-xSb single crystal was analyzed by Xray diffraction. The distribution of carrier concentrations in MnxGa1-xSb was investigated by electrochemical capacitance- voltage profiler. The content of Mn in MnxGa1-xSb varied gradually from x = 0.09 near the surface to x = 0 in the wafer inner analyzed by X-ray diffraction. Electrochemical capacitance-voltage profiler reveals that the concentration of p-type carriers in MnxGa1-xSb is as high as 1 1021 cm-3, indicating that most of the Mn atoms in MnxGa1-xSb take the site of Ga, and play a role of acceptors.

Structural relaxation through isothermal annealing at tempertature below glass transition is conducted on Zr46.75Ti8.25Cu7.5Ni10Be27.5 (Vitreloy-4) bulk metallic glass. Defect concentration is correlated with the annealing time t according to differential scanning calorimetry thermalgrams. The effects of structural relaxation on mechanical properties and deformation behaviour are investigated by using instrumented nanoindentation. It is found that as-cast alloy exhibits pronounced serration flow during the loading process of nanoindentation, and the size and number of serrations decrease with the annealing time. The change of the deformation behaviour with structural relaxation is explained using a free volume model.

Magnetic domain structure of Nd60Al10Fe20Co10 bulk metallic glass (BMG) has been studied by using magnetic-force microscopy. In the magnetic-force images it is shown that the exchange-interaction-type magnetic domains with a period of about 360 nm do exist in the BMG, which is believed to be associated with the appearance of hard-magnetic properties in this system. The existence of the large-scale domains demonstrates that the magnetic moments of a great deal of short-scale ordered atomic clusters in the BMG have been aligned by exchange coupling. Annealing at 715 K leads to partial crystallization of the BMG. However, the exchange coupling is stronger in the annealed sample, which is considered to arise from the increase of transition-metal concentration in the amorphous phase due to the precipitation of Nd crystalline phase.

Mn+ irons were implanted to n-type Ge(1 1 1) single crystal at room temperature with an energy of 100 keV and a dose of 3 x 10(16) cm(-2). Subsequently annealing was performed at 400degreesC for 1 h under flowing nitrogen gas. X-ray diffraction measurements show that as-implanted sample is amorphous and the structure of crystal is restored after annealing. Polycrystalline germanium is formed in annealed sample. There are no new phases found except germanium. The samples surface morphologies indicate that annealed sample has island-like feature while there is no such kind of characteristic in as-implanted sample. The elemental composition of annealed sample was analyzed by Auger electron spectroscopy. It shows that manganese ions are deeply implanted into germanium substrate and the highest manganese atomic concentration is 8% at the depth of 120 nm. The magnetic properties of samples were investigated by an alternating gradient magnetometer. The annealed sample shows ferromagnetic behavior at room temperature.

The thermal stability of nanocrystalline clusters, the phase evolution, and their effects on magnetic Propertieswere studied for as-cast Nd60Al10Fe20Co10 alloy using differential scanning calorimetry curves, x-ray diffraction patterns, scanning electron microscopy, and high-resolution transition electron microscopy. Thermomagnetic curves and hysteresis loops of the bulk metallic glass were measured during the annealing process. The high thermostability of the hardmagnetic properties of the samples observed is attributed to the stability of the nanocrystalline clusters upon annealing, while the slight enhancement in the magnetization is due to the precipitation of some Nd-rich metastable phases. The mechanism of thermostability of the nanocrystalline clusters and the formation of the metastable phases are discussed.

Mn+ ions were implanted into n-type Ge(111) single crystal at room temperature at an energy of 100 keV with a dose of 3 x 1016 cm-2. Subsequent annealing was performed on the samples at 400 °C and 600 °C in a flowing nitrogen atmosphere. The magnetic properties of the samples have been investigated by alternating gradient magnetometer at room temperature. The compositional properties of the annealed samples were studied by Auger electron spectroscopy and the structural properties were analyzed by X-ray diffraction measurements. Magnetization measurements reveal room-temperature ferromagnetism for the annealed samples. The magnetic analysis supported by compositional and structural properties indicates that forming the diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) MnxGe1-x after annealing may account for the ferromagnetic behavior in the annealed samples.

High dose Mn was implanted into semi-insulating GaAs substrate to fabricate embedded ferromagnetic Mn-Ga binary particles by mass-analyzed dual ion beam deposit system at room temperature. The properties of as-implanted and annealed samples were measured with X-ray diffraction, high-resolution X-ray diffraction to characterize the structural changes. New phase formed after high temperature annealing. Sample surface image was observed with atomic force microscopy. All the samples showed ferromagnetic behaviour at room temperature. There were some differences between the hysteresis loops of as-implanted and annealed samples as well as the cluster size of the latter was much larger than that of the former through the surface morphology. Quasicrystalline phase with different volume fraction were formed by isothermally annealing the as-castZr(62)Al(9.5)Ni(9.5)Cu(14)Nb(5) bulk metallic glass at 723 K for different times. The effects of quasicrystals on the deformation behavior of the materials were studied by nanoindentation and compression test. It revealed that the alloys with homogeneous amorphous structure exhibit pronounced flow serrations during the nanoindentation loading, while no obvious flow serration is observed for the sample with quasicrystals more than 10 vol.%. However, further compression tests confirm that the no-serrated flows are formed due to different reasons. For annealed samples containing quasicrystals less than 35 vol.%, continuous plastic deformation occurs due to propagation of multiple shear bands. While the disappearance of serrated flow cannot be explained by the generation of multiple shear bands for samples containing quasicrystals more than 35 vol.%, which will fracture with a totally different fracture mode, namely, dimple fracture mode under loading instead of shear fracture mode.
