A novel method for the highly sensitive determination of perchlorate was proposed. It was based on solvent extraction in the presence of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) followed by Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) electrochemiluminescent determination. A linear calibration was obtained over the range of 0.1 to 10 mu mol l(-1) with a correlation coefficient of 0.998. The detection limit (S/N = 3) was 5.0 x 10(-8) mol l(-1). The relative standard deviation for 10 replicates of 1 mu mol l(-1) perchlorate was 1.6%. Interference studies suggest that this method is selective for the determination of perchlorate. Application of this method to the highly sensitive determination of other anions is suggested. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

The reaction of [Cp*RhCl2](2) 1 with dilithium 1,2-dicarba-closo-dodecaborane(12)-1,2-dithiolate (a) and -diselenolate (b) afforded the 16-electron rhodium(III) half-sandwich complexes Cp*Rh[E2C2(B10H10)] [E=S (3a), Se (3b)]. The 18-electron trimethylphosphane rhodium(III) half-sandwiches Cp*Rh(PMe3)[E2C2(B10H10)] 4a-c were prepared from the reaction of Cp*RhCl2(PMe3) 2 with the same dichalcogenolates, including the ditelluride (c). The complexes 4a,b could also be obtained from the reaction of 3a,b with trimethylphosphane. The molecular geometry of 4b was determined by X-ray structural analysis. The 16-electron complexes 3 an monomeric in solution as shown by multinuclear magnetic resonance (H-1-, B-11-, C-13-, P-31- Se-77-, Rh-103-, Te-125-NMR). also in comparison with the data for the trimethylphosphane analogues 4a-c and for 6a in which the rhodium bears the eta(5)-1,3-C5H3 Bu-t(2) ligand. The Rh-103 nuclear shielding is reduced by 831 ppm (3a) and 1114 ppm (3b) with respect to the 18-electron complexes 4a,b. Similarly, the Se-77 nuclear shielding in 3b is reduced by 676.4 ppm with respect to that in 4b. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Cyclic voltammetry of Vitamin K-3 (V-K3) was measured with Pt disk electrode, platinum interdigitated array (Pt-IDA) and Au-IDA microelectrodes in single and dual modes. The effects of pH, scan rate and collector potential on the current of generator and collector were studied. The collection efficiency of V-K3 at IDA electrodes was measured. The linear ranges for current response as a function of V-K3 concentration were found to he 10 mu M-1 mM (i(g)) and 1 mu M - 1 mM (i(c)) for the generator and collector of the Pt-IDA electrode, respectively. The effects of waiting time, potential difference and pulse electrolysis time in differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) on the peak current of V-K3 were studied to get the optimal condition at 0.1 M Na2HPO4, pH 11.50 and 11.0 for Au-IDA and Pt-IDA, respectively.

A reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with series dual glassy carbon electrodes for the amperometric detection of water-soluble menadione is described. The complex post-column derivatization reaction and the high background currents were avoided. The menadione sodium bisulfite was reduced at -0.3 V vs. SCE at the upstream (generator) electrode and oxidized at +0.2V vs. SCE at the downstream (collector) electrode. The mobile phase was 0.2moll(-1) HAc-NaAc aqueous buffer (pH 5.50) and 40% (v/v) methanol. The linear response was in the range of 35 ng to 15 mu g, with a detection Limit of 15 ng (S/N=3). The correlation coefficient was 0.9997 (n=6). The electrochemical detection with series dual electrodes has a higher selectivity for menadione (vitamin K-3) compound than with UV detection.

NdCl3 reacted with C6H5CH2C5H4Na in the ratio 1:1 at -78 degrees C giving [C6H5 CH2C5H4NdCl2 . nTHF], which then was reacted with C8H8K2/THF to yield the title complex [(C8H8)(3)(C6H5CH2C5H4)Nd2K(THF)(3)] (C6H5CH2C5H4 = benzylcyclopentadienyl). The crystal structure of the Nd complex was determined by X-ray diffraction and revealed that the benzyl group is coordinated to the potassium atom to form a new type of trinuclear complex [(eta(8)-C8H8)Nd(mu(2)-eta(8)-C8H8K(THF) (eta(3)-C6H5CH2-mu(2)-eta(5)-C5H4)Nd (THF)(2)(eta(8)-C8H8)]. The gold electrodes modified with 2-picolinic acid , nicotinic acid, iso-nicotinic or thiophene were prepared using membrane transfer method, The electrochemistry of di-mu-oxodimanganese 2,2'-bipyridine complex was studied in the acetic acid buffer solution at different modified gold electrodes, It was found that the modifiers which can promote the electrochemical reaction of the complex should be of at least two functional groups, One group can be bound to the electrode surface and the other can form electron transfer pathway between the modifier and the complex through sal; bridge or hydrogen bond, In addition, the mechanism of the electrochemical reaction was discussed.

LaCl3(15-crown-5), I was prepared by the reaction of LaCl(3)nH(2)O with 15-crown-5 and bipy (2,2'-bipyridyl). [LaCl2(phen)(H2O)(2)(mu-Cl)](2) .(15-crown-5). MeCN, II, was crystallized from a mixture of LaC1(3) . nH(2)O, phen (1,10-phenanthroline) and 15-crown-5 in MeOH/MeCN, Crystal structures of these two complexes have been determined by X-ray methods. The La(III) ion in I is coordinated by three Cl anions and five oxygen atoms of a crown ether. The two metal ions in II are bridged by two Cl anions and the crown ligand is hydrogen-bonded to the coordinated water molecules to form polymeric... crown/cation/cation/crown... chains.

Three new bimetallic complexes were synthesized and crystalized by reactions of (CF3CO2)(3)Ln With R(1) AlR(2)(Ln=Nd and Y, R(1)=H, R=i-C4H9; Ln=Eu, R=R(1)=C2H5) in tetrahydrofuran solution, and their crystal structures were determined using a X-ray diffraction method. The structures and the questions on valence state and noncoplanarity in the structures were confirmed and cracked by means of H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR spectra, especially by C-13-H-1 COSY 2D NMR technique. A general formula of molecules of the three rare earth complexes was defined as follows: [(mu-CF3CO2)(2)Ln(mu-CF3CHO2)AlR(2) . 2THF](2) A mechanism on the formation of the new complexes was also proposed through the following five steps: alkylating, beta-elimination (or hydrogenation), hydrogen transfer, linkage and association. Both Y-Al and Eu-Al complexes function as a catalyst in polymerization of MMA and ECH. The polymer obtained from the first monomer is mainly syndiotactic chain structure and the polymerization of the last monomer shows higher catalytic activity. The Y-Al complex also capable of ring-opening polymerization of THF in case of adding-vary small amount of ECH and a oxonium ion mechanism of THF polymerization was suggested from the analysis of THF polymer terminal.

By the reaction of Cp3Ln (Cp = C5H5; Ln = Dy, Ho, Yb) with equimolar n-propyl alcohol in THF (tetrahydrofuran) at room temperature three new binuclear organolanthanide complexes, [CP2Ln(mu-OCH2CH2CH3)]2 (Ln = Dy, Ho, Yb), have been synthesized, as shown by X-ray single-crystal structure analysis for the complex [Cp2Yb(mu-OCH2CH2CH3)]2. All the complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and MS spectra. The Yb2O2 unit is planar, and the ytterbium atom is coordinated by two Cp ring centroids and two oxygen atoms of two n-propyloxide ligands to form a distorted tetrahedral geometry. The average Yb-C (Cp) bond distance is 2.589(17) angstrom. The average Yb-O distance is 2.199(5) angstrom. The Yb-Yb separation [3.521(1) angstrom] indicates that no metal-metal interaction is present.

Growth rates, measured as shell length and body weight daily growth, were studied in the eight families of Pacific abalone, Haliotis discus hannai Ino, reared at 12, 16 and 20 degrees C for 40 d respectively. The results show that J(1)Rh family grew the best at 12 degrees C, with growth rates of (32.88 +/- 4.66) mu m/d and (5.24 +/- 1.84) mg/d. C(1)Jm family had the highest growth rates of (58.00 +/- 2.00) mu m/d and (9.71 +/- 1.21) mg/d at 16 degrees C. J(1)Jm family ranked the first at 20 degrees C, with growth rates of (66.00 +/- 1.76) mu m/d and (10.99 +/- 0.34) mg/d. RjRh family had the slowest growth rates at all three temperatures. Shell length growth rates were 18.25, 33.00 and 43.13 mu m/d respectively, while body weight growth rates were 2.47, 2.56 and 4.75 mg/d respectively. Both temperature and family had significant effect on growth rates (P<0.05). At 16 and 20 degrees C, maternal effects on growth rates were not significant (P>0.05), but paternal effects on growth rates were significant (P<0.05). Results of this study indicate genetic difference among the families and importance of selecting male breeders in the commercial hatchery.
