Self-ordering of quasi-quantum wires in multilayer InAlAs/AlGaAs nanostructures grown by molecular beam epitaxy is identified. The chain-like structures along the [1 (1) over bar 0] Of direction formed by coalescence of quantum dots were observed. The photoluminescence of the nanostructures is partially polarized along the [1 (1) over bar 0] direction. The polarization ratio depends on the wavelength and the maximum polarization is on the lower energy side. The maximum polarization increases from 0.32 at 10 K to 0.53 at 100 K, and the energy position of maximum polarization moves near to PL peak with increasing temperature. They are all related to the existence of isolated islands and quasi-quantum wires in our sample. This result provides a novel approach to produce narrow quantum wires. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. A quasi-thermodynamic analysis of the MOVPE growth of AlxGa1-xN alloy using TMGa, TMA1 and ammonia has been proposed. The effect of varying growth conditions (growth temperature, reactor pressure, input V/III ratio, hydrogen pressure fraction in the carrier gas and the decomposed fraction of ammonia) on the distribution coefficient of Al has been calculated. In the case of AlxGa1-xN, preferential incorporation of Al is predicted. The calculated relationship between input vapour and deposited solid composition has been compared with data in the literature. A good agreement between the calculated and the experimental composition shows that our improved model is suitable for applying to the AlxGa1-xN alloy grown by MOVPE. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. The Raman scattering and the photoluminescence (PL) of ZnSxTe1-x mixed crystals grown by MBE, covering the entire composition range (0 less than or equal to x<1), were investigated. The results of Raman studies show that the phonons in ZnSxTe1-x mixed crystals display two-mode behavior. In addition, photoluminescence spectra obtained in backscattering and edge-emission geometries, reflection spectra and the temperature dependence of the photoluminescence of ZnSxTe1-x from 10 to 300K were employed to find out the origins of PL emissions in ZnSxTe1-x with different x values, The results indicate that the emission bands, for the samples with small x values, can be related to the band gap transitions or a shallow level emission center, while for the samples with large x values, they are designated to strong radiative recombinations of Te isoelectronic centers.

We used Plane Wave Expansion Method and a Rapid Genetic Algorithm to design two-dimensional photonic crystals with a large absolute band gap. A filling fraction controlling operator and Fourier transform data storage mechanism had been integrated into the genetic operators to get desired photonic crystals effectively and efficiently. Starting from randomly generated photonic crystals, the proposed RGA evolved toward the best objectives and yielded a square lattice photonic crystal with the band gap (defined as the gap to mid-gap ratio) as large as 13.25%. Furthermore, the evolutionary objective was modified and resulted in a satisfactory PC for better application to slab system.

We present a comprehensive study of the one-dimensional modulation instability of broad optical beams in biased photo refractive-photovoltaic crystals under steady-state conditions. We obtain the one-dimensional modulation instability growth rate by globally treating the space-charge field and by considering distinction between values of Eo in nonlocal effects and local effects in the space-charge field, where Eo is the field constant correlated with terms in the space-charge field, which depends on the external bias field, the bulk photovoltaic effect, and the ratio of the optical beam's intensity to that of the dark irradiance. The one-dimensional modulation instability growth rate in local effects can be determined from that in nonlocal effects. When the bulk photovoltaic effect is neglectable, irrespective of distinction between values of Eo in nonlocal effects and local effects in the space-charge field, the one-dimensional modulation instability growth rates in nonlocal effects and local effects are those of broad optical beams studied previously in biased photorefractive-nonphotovoltaic crystals. When the external bias field is absent, the one-dimensional modulation instability growth rates in nonlocal effects and local effects predict those of broad optical beams in open- and closed-circuit photorefractive-photovoltaic crystals. We show that bright-dark vector solitons are possible in biased photorefractive-photovoltaic crystals under steady-state conditions, which result from both the bulk photovoltaic effect and the spatially nonuniform screening of the external bias field. The analytical solutions of these vector solitons can be obtained in the case of \sigma\ much less than 1, where sigma is the parameter controlling the intensities of the two optical beams. In the limit of -1 < sigma much less than 1, these vector solitons can also be determined by use of simple numerical integration procedures. When the bulk photovoltaic effect is neglectable, these vector solitons are bright-dark vector screening solitons studied previously in the \sigma\ much less than 1 regime, and predict bright-dark vector screening solitons in the -1 < sigma less than or equal to 1 regime. When the external bias field is absent, these vector solitons predict bright-dark vector photovoltaic solitons in closed and open circuits. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

We report the observation of intense spontaneous emission of green light from LiF:F-2:F-3(+) centers in active channel waveguides generated in lithium fluoride crystals by near-infrared femtosecond laser radiation. While irradiating the crystal at room temperature with 405 nm light from a laser diode, yellow and green emission was seen by the naked eye. Stripe waveguides were fabricated by translating the crystal along the irradiated laser pulse, and their guiding properties and fluorescence spectra at 540 nm demonstrated. This single-step process inducing a waveguide structure offers a good prospect for the development of a waveguide laser in bulk LiF crystals.
