The concept of biosensor based on imaging ellipsometry was proposed ten years ago. Its principle and the methodology as well as some solutions to problems which have to be faced during the development are mentioned. Its properties of phase sensitive, high throughput and fast sampling, as well as label-free, sensitivity better than 1 ng/ml for Immunoglobulin G, and real-time analysis for protein interaction process, etc. provide a potential for applications in biomedicine field. The recent biosensing development with total internal reflection imaging ellipsometry is presented also. [GRAPHICS] An example of 48 protein arrays in matrix. (C) 2008 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The relative Kic values of metals are calculated with a simplified dislocation model. It is found that the ratio of KIIc to KIc and the temperature dependence of fracture toughness of some metals estimated with this model are consistent with the experimental results.

An auto-focusing method based on the image brightness gradient sharpness function is presented for imaging ellipsometry system, in which the image plane of the thin-film specimen is not perpendicular to the optical axis. The clear image of a specimen with large area is obtained by moving the imaging sensor in optical axis direction and around its sensitive surface centre successively. The experimental results demonstrate its feasibility.

In order to characterize the physical and spatial properties of nano-film pattern on solid substrates, an automatic imaging spectroscopic ellipsometer (ISE) based on a polarizer - compensator - specimen - analyzer configuration in the visible region is presented. It can provide the spectroscopic ellipsometric parameters psi (x, y, lambda) and Delta (x, y, lambda) of a large area specimen with a lateral resolution in the order of some microns. A SiO2 stepped layers pattern is used to demonstrate the function of the ISE which shows potential application in thin film devices' such as high-throughput bio-chips.

Defects in as-grown U3+ : CaF2 crystals grown with or without PbF2 as an oxygen scavenger were studied using Raman spectra, thermoluminescence glow curves, and additional absorption (AA) spectra induced by heating and gamma-irradiation. The effects of heating and irradiation on as-grown U3+: CaF2 crystals are similar, accompanied by the elimination of H-type centers and production of F-type centers. U3+ is demonstrated to act as an electron donor in the CaF2 lattice, which is oxidized to the tetravalent form by thermal activation or gamma-irradiation. In the absence of PbF(2)as an oxygen scavenger, the as-grown U3+:CaF2 crystals contain many more lattice defects in terms of both quantity and type, due to the presence of O2- impurities. Some of these defects can recombine with each other in the process of heating and gamma-irradiation. (c) 2005 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.

The effects of gamma irradiation on as-grown 5 at% Yb:YAlO3 (YAP) and air annealing on gamma-irradiated 5 at% Yb: YAP have been studied by the difference in the absorption spectra before and after treatment. The gamma irradiation and air annealing led to opposite changes of the absorption properties of the Yb: YAP crystal. After air annealing, the gamma-irradiation effects were totally removed over the wavelength range 390-800 nm and the concentrations of Fe3+ and Yb3+ were slightly increased. For the first time, the gamma-irradiation-induced valence changes between Yb3+ and Yb2+ ions in Yb: YAP crystals have been observed. (c) 2005 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.

Yb: YAG (Yb: Y3Al5O12) crystals have been grown by temperature-gradient techniques (TGT) and their color centers and impurity defects were investigated by means of gamma irradiations and thermal treatment. Two color centers located at 255 and 290 nm were observed in the as-grown TGT-Yb: YAG. Analysis shows that the 255 nm band may be associated with Fe3+ ions. Absorption intensity changes of the 290 nm band after gamma irradiation and thermal treatment indicate that this band may be associated with oxygen-vacancy defects. The electronic structures and absorption spectra for the perfect PbMoO4 crystal and the crystal containing lead vacancy V-Pb(2-) with lattice structure optimized are calculated using density functional theory code CASTEP. The calculated absorption spectra of the PbMoO4 crystal containing V-Pb(2-) exhibit three absorption bands peaking at 2.0 eV (620 nm), 3.0 eV (413 run) and 3.3 eV (375 nm), which are in good agreement with experimental values. The theory predicts that the 390 nm, 430 nm and 580 run absorption bands are related to the existence of V-Pb(2-) in the PbMoO4 crystal.

Sapphire substrates were nanopatterned by dry (inductively coupled plasma, ICP) etching to improve the performance of GaN-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs). GaN-based LEDs on nanopatterned sapphire substrates (NPSS) were fabricated by metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). The characteristics of LEDs fabricated on NPSS prepared by dry etching were studied. The light output power and wall-plug efficiency of the LEDs fabricated on NPSS were greater than those of the conventional LEDs fabricated on common planar sapphire substrates when the injection currents were the same. The LEDs on NPSS and common planar sapphire substrates have similar I-V characteristics.

Crack-free GaN films have been achieved by inserting an Indoped low-temperature (LT) AlGaN interlayer grown on silicon by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. The relationship between lattice constants c and a obtained by X-ray diffraction analysis shows that indium doping interlayer can reduce the stress in GaN layers. The stress in GaN decreases with increasing trimethylindium (TMIn) during interlayer growth. Moreover, for a smaller TMIn flow, the stress in GaN decreases dramatically when In acts as a surfactant to improve the crystallinity of the AlGaN interlayer, and for a larger TMIn flow, the stress will increase again. The decreased stress leads to smoother surfaces and fewer cracks for GaN layers by using an In-doped interlayer than by using an undoped interlayer. In doping has been found to enhance the lateral growth and reduce the growth rate of the c face. It can explain the strain relief and cracks reduction in GaN films. InGaN photovoltaic structures with p-n junctions have been fabricated by metal organic chemical vapour deposition. Using double-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements, it was found that the room temperature band gaps of p-InGaN and n-InGaN films were 2.7 and 2.8 eV, respectively. Values of 3.4 x 10(-2) mA cm(-2) short-circuit current, 0.43 V open-circuit voltage and 0.57 fill factor have been achieved under ultraviolet illumination (360 nm), which were related to p-n junction connected back-to-back with a Schottky barrier and many defects of the p-InGaN film. 2007 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Si-doped nonpolar a-plane GaN films were grown on nanopatterned sapphire substrates by a low-pressure metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) system. The structure, morphology and field emission properties of the sample were studied by means of high-resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and field emission measurement. The XRD analysis shows that the sample is a nonpolar a-plane (11 (2) over bar0) GaN film. The field emission measurement shows that the nonpolar GaN films exhibit excellent field emission properties with a threshold emission field of as low as 10 V/mu m at a current density of 0.63 mu A/cm(2), and a high field emission current density of 74 mA/cm(2) at an applied field of 24 V/mu m. Moreover, the Fowler-Nordheirn plot of the sample fits a near linear relation. (C) 2009 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim

CaCu3Ti(4-x)Nb(x)O(12) (x = 0, 0.01, 0.08, 0.2) ceramics were fabricated by a conventional solid-state reaction method. The ceramics showed the body-centered cubic structure without any foreign phases and the grain size decreases with Nb doping. Two Debye-type relaxations were observed for the Nb-doped samples at low frequency and high frequency, respectively. The complex electric modulus analysis revealed that the surface layer, grains and grain boundaries contributed to the dielectric constant. The low-frequency dielectric constant relative to the surface layer decreased to a minimum and then increased with the dc bias voltage at 100 Hz, which were well explained in terms of a model containing two metal oxide semiconductors in series, confirming the surface layer in the ceramics. The shift voltage V-B corresponding to the minimal capacitance increased with increase of the composition x. (C) 2009 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.

Dilute magnetic nonpolar GaN films have been fabricated by implanting Mn into unintentionally doped nonpolar a-plane GaN films at room temperature, and a subsequent rapid thermal annealing. The X-ray diffraction analysis shows that after rapid thermal annealing the peak of the GaN X-ray diffraction curve shifts to a lower angle, indicating a slight expansion of the GaN crystal lattice. Atomic force microscopy analysis shows that the annealing process does not change the morphology of the sample greatly. Magnetic property analysis indicates that the as-annealed sample shows obvious ferromagnetic properties. (C) 2009 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim

The theoretical electron mobility limited by dislocation scattering of a two-dimensional electron gas confined near the interface of an AlxGa1-xN/GaN heterostructure is calculated. The accurate wave functions and electron distributions of the three lowest subbands for a typical structure are obtained by solving the Schrodinger and Poisson equations self-consistently. Based on the model of treating dislocation as a charged line, a simple scattering potential, a square-well potential, is utilized. The estimated mobility suggests that such a choice can simplify the calculation without introducing significant deviation from experimental data. It is also found that the dislocation scattering dominates both the low- and moderate-temperature mobilities and accounts for the nearly flattening-out behavior with increasing temperature. To clarify the role of dislocation scattering all standard scattering mechanisms are included in the calculation.
