Data recovered from 11 popup satellite archival tags and 3 surgically implanted archival tags were used to analyze the movement patterns of juvenile northern bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus orientalis) in the eastern Pacific. The light sensors on archival and pop-up satellite transmitting archival tags (PSATs) provide data on the time of sunrise and sunset, allowing the calculation of an approximate geographic position of the animal. Light-based estimates of longitude are relatively robust but latitude estimates are prone to large degrees of error, particularly near the times of the equinoxes and when the tag is at low latitudes. Estimating latitude remains a problem for researchers using light-based geolocation algorithms and it has been suggested that sea surface temperature data from satellites may be a useful tool for refining latitude estimates. Tag data from bluefin tuna were subjected to a newly developed algorithm, called “PSAT Tracker,” which automatically matches sea surface temperature data from the tags with sea surface temperatures recorded by satellites. The results of this algorithm compared favorably to the estimates of latitude calculated with the lightbased algorithms and allowed for estimation of fish positions during times of the year when the lightbased algorithms failed. Three near one-year tracks produced by PSAT tracker showed that the fish range from the California−Oregon border to southern Baja California, Mexico, and that the majority of time is spent off the coast of central Baja Mexico. A seasonal movement pattern was evident; the fish spend winter and spring off central Baja California, and summer through fall is spent moving northward to Oregon and returning to Baja California.

China's marine aquaculture landings provide only 18% of its combined freshwater and amrine capture and culture landings, at a per-capita consumption of only 3.2 kg/yr out of a total of 18.1 kg/yr. We described development and some of the results of long-term mariculture and stocking/enhancement projects that have been underway for up to 20 years in the Hangzhou Bay area. Penaeus orientalis (also referred to as P. chinensis) stocking provided up to 400 t/yr, at a total cost-benefit ratio of up to 8 Yuan of landed shrimp per Yuan invested in shrimp stocking. Over 40 t of Penaeus orientalis were produced commercially in 1993, with proceeds being used to fund mariculture and fisheries research. Large scale edible jellyfish restocking is also underway, while semicommercial culture of abalone, Haliotis diversicolor, has been successful. Technical problems limitig mariculture have been solved successfully for some species.

We investigated the migration and behavior of young Pacific bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis) using archival tags that measure environmental variables, record them in memory, and estimate daily geographical locations using measured light levels. Swimming depth, ambient water temperature, and feeding are described in a companion paper. Errors of the tag location estimates that could be checked were –0.54° ±0.75° (mean ±SD) in longitude and –0.12° ±3.06° in latitude. Latitude, estimated automatically by the tag, was problematic, but latitude, estimated by comparing recorded sea-surface temperatures with a map of sea-surface temperature, was satisfactory. We concluded that the archival tag is a reliable tool for estimating location on a scale of about one degree, which is sufficient for a bluefin tuna migration study. After release, tagged fish showed a normal swimming behavioral pattern within one day and normal feeding frequency within one month. In addition, fish with an archival tag maintained weight-at-length similar to that of wild fish; however, their growth rate was less than that of wild fish. Of 166 fish released in the East China Sea with implanted archival tags, 30 were recovered, including one that migrated across the Pacific Ocean. Migration of young Pacific bluefin tuna appears to consist of two phases: a residency phase comprising more than 80% of all days, and a traveling phase. An individual young Pacific bluefin tuna was observed to cover 7600 km in one traveling phase that lasted more than two months (part of this phase was a trans-Pacific migration completed within two months). Many features of behavior in the traveling phase were similar to those in the residency phase; however the temperature difference between viscera and ambient temperature was larger, feeding was slightly more frequent, and dives to deeper water were more frequent.

We investigated the migration and behavior of young Pacific Bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis) using archival tags. The archival tag measures environmental variables, records them in its memory, and estimates daily geographical locations based on measured light levels. Of 166 archival tags implanted in Pacific bluefin tuna that were released at the northeastern end of the East China Sea from 1995 to 1997, 30 tags were recovered, including one from a fish that migrated across the Pacific. This article describes swimming depth, ambient water temperature, and feeding frequency of young Pacific bluefin tuna based on retrieved data. Tag performance, effect of the tag on the fish, and horizontal movements of the species are described in another paper. Young Pacific bluefin tuna swim mainly in the mixed layer, usually near the sea surface, and swim in deeper water in daytime than at nighttime. They also exhibit a pattern of depth changes, corresponding to sunrise and sunset, apparently to avoid a specific low light level. The archival tags recorded temperature changes in viscera that appear to be caused by feeding, and those changes indicate that young Pacific bluefin tuna commonly feed at dawn and in the daytime, but rarely at dusk or at night. Water temperature restricts their distribution, as indicated by changes in their vertical distribution with the seasonal change in depth of the thermocline and by the fact that their horizontal distribution is in most cases confined to water in the temperature range of 14−20°C.

The oriental bonito (Sarda Orientalis T. and S.), locally known as thora-baleya, is the least abundant species of the bloodfish group commercially exploited from the inshore waters of Ceylon. The occurrence of this species in Ceylon waters has not been reported and hence it was considered valuable to present, the observations on this species, made in the course of the investigations into the more abundant relatives of this fish, in this preliminary report. In 1964 not more than few hundred pounds of this species was caught from the inshore waters of Ceylon. Since the popularisation of drift-nets for bloodfish fishery in the south, south-west and/west coasts of Ceylon, it is estimated that the annual production has risen to about one ton.

Protein physicochemical properties in cultured and wild prawns (Penaeus (F.) orientalis Kishinouye, 1918) were studied and compared. Protein fractions were separated into water-soluble, salt-soluble, alkali-soluble, and stroma. The results showed that salt- and alkali-soluble proteins were slightly higher in wild prawns and water-soluble proteins were higher in cultured prawns. There were only slight differences in Ca2+-ATPase, MG2+-ATPase, and ATP sensitivities. The textural values of wild prawns were significantly higher than the cultured ones.

Present study deals with the family Soleidae (common sole) Euryglossa orientalis (Bl. & Schn.) of the order Pleuronectiformis from Karachi coast. Separate equation (regression line) for describing the length weight relationships for male and female combined are justified. Allometric studies were made on skeleton weight relative to the length and the weight of the fish. The regression equation 'a' and 'b' values of standard length/skeleton weight and body weight/skeleton weight are statistically significant.

Bream (Abramis brava orientalis) is one of Cyprindae the Caspian Sea and its basin which has a special ecological, biological and economical role. Stock of this fish in the Caspian Sea has reduced during several years for different reason the over fishing, different industrial, agriculture, urban pollution and destroy of the spawning habitat. So that fishery company decided to recover the stock of this fish by the way of artificial reproduction of a Bream couple hunted from south coast of the Caspian Sea (Iran) and setting the fingerling to the rivers and inflow wetlands of the Caspian Sea.This activity has due to 20 tons Bream annual fishing in the Iranian South coast of the Caspian Sea (Gilan province coast and Anzali wetland), The artificial reproduction has decreased Bream population diversity of Caspian sea and Anzali wetland. So it has been declined to improve Braem population diversity by the entrance of Azerbijan republic Bream and encounter to the Caspian sea Bream. Meanwhile there is Bream in the Aras Dam Lake which had been forgotten by the Fishery Company of Iran .For this reason specifications morphometric, meristic and inter species Molecular Genetic have been surveyed in Anzali wetland,Southern coast of Caspian Sea ,Aras Darn Lake and Azerbijan republic during 2003-2005. According to the research on specifications of Morphometric and Meristic of Anzali wetland(120 species),Southern coast of Caspian Sea(90 species), Aras Dam Lake(110 species) and Azerbijan Republic(125 species)has Morphometric and Meristic differences. Ceylon’s fishery for the tunas is presently limited to the coastal waters which in the present context have an off-shore limit of 15 miles and our contribution to the world tuna production is a little over 1%. Four varieties of tuna are largely exploited in the coastal waters. Of these, Baleya or the skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis Linn. 1758) is the predominant variety followed by attavalla or mackerel tuna (Euthynnus ajfinis, Cantor, 1850), kelawalla or yellowfin (Thunnus albacares, Bonnaterre, 1788) and alagoduwa or frigate mackerel (Auxis thazard Lacepede, 1802). Other varieties like the thora-baleya or bonito (Sarda orientalis) and asgedi kelawalla or big eye tuna (Thunnus obesus) are also landed frequently but in extremely small quantities. Figure 1 illustrates the relative composition of the tuna varieties in the catch and their percentage composition further sub-divided according to the type of effort applied. It is evident that Ceylon's coastal fishery for tunas is greatly influenced by the production of smaller varieties of the tunas.

Tunas and tuna-like fishes have contributed considerably towards the increase in fish production from Ceylon's coastal waters, during the last five years and in this blood fish group lies a potential resource for a further increase in production. Consequently considerable attention is being paid to the study of these species. Length frequency sampling of these species are being carried out and quite often it becomes necessary to convert catch in terms of weight to catch in terms of number, when estimating apparent abundance of the stock. The length-weight relationship in addition to its usefulness in converting length frequency data to weight frequency data for such purpose is of general value to biologists and even to fishermen. The six species studied are yellowfin tuna (Thunnus alacares, Bonneterre), skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis, Linnaeus), mackerel tuna (Buthynnus affinis, Cantor), frigate mackerel (narrow corseleted Auxis thazard, Lacepede and broad corseleted A. rochie, Risso) and bonito (Saida orientalis, T&S).
