In this investigation transparent conducting properties of as-deposited and annealed ZnO:Sn:F films deposited using different spray flux density by changing the solvent volume (10 mL, 20 mL ... 50 mL) of the starting solutions have been studied and reported. The structural analyses of the films indicate that all the films have hexagonal wurtzite structure of ZnO with preferential orientation along (002) plane irrespective of the solvent volume and annealing treatment whereas, the overall crystalline quality of the films is found to be enhanced with the increase in solvent volume as well as with annealing. This observed enhancement is strongly supported by the optical and surface morphological results. From the measurements of electrical parameters, it is seen that, the annealed films exhibit better electrical properties compared to the as-deposited ones. Annealing has caused agglomeration of grains as confirmed by the surface morphological studies. Also, the annealing process has led to an improvement in the optical transparency as well as band gap. It is found from the analyses of the characteristics of the as- deposited and annealed films that the annealed film deposited from starting solution having solvent volume of 50 mL is optimal in all respects, as it possesses all the desirable characteristics including the quality factor (1.60 x 10(-4) (Omega/sq.)(-1)). Strong interest in developing technology for visual information. stimulates research for thin film electroluminescent devices. Here, for the first time, we report that thulium- and terbium-doped zinc-oxide films are suitable for electroluminescence applications. Two different devices were assembled as lTO/LiF/ZnO:RE/LiF/Al or ITO/SiO2/ZnO:RE/SiO2/Al, where ZnO:RE is a film of zinc oxide containing 10 at% of Tb3+ or Tm3+. Electroluminescence spectra show that besides a broad emission band with maximum around 650 nm assigned to ZnO, also emission lines from Tb3+ at 484 nm (D-5(4) -> F-7(6)), 543 nm (D-5(4) -> F-7(6)), and 589 nm (D-5(4) -> F-7(4)), or from Tm3+ at 478 nm ((1)G(4) -> H-3(6)), and 511 mn (D-1(2) -> H-3(5)) were detected. Intensity of emission as function of applied voltage and current-voltage characteristic are shown and discussed. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We report a novel and simple solution-based technique for depositing 2-D zinc oxide platelets at low temperature. Nanoplatelets that were mostly a-oriented associated with the Lotgering orientation factor of 0.65 were obtained by locating a glass substrate at a distance of about 5cm over the aqueous vapour of the boiling precursor. Experiments were carried out to optimize the coating parameters by placing the substrate at different positions, durations and the pH of the precursor. The X-ray diffraction studies confirmed the structure associated with the crystallites to be wurzite. The different morphology of the zinc oxide films and blue light emission were observed using scanning electron microscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy respectively.

Sol-gel route was employed to grow polycrystalline thin films of Li-doped ZnO thin films (Zn1-xLixO, x=0.15). Polycrystalline films were obtained at a growth temperature of 400-500 degrees C. Ferroelectricity in Zn0.85Li0.15O was verified by examining the temperature variation of the real and imaginary parts of dielectric constant, and from the C-V measurements. The phase transition temperature was found to be 330 K. The room-temperature dielectric constant and dissipation factor were 15.5 and 0.09 respectively, at a frequency of 100 kHz. The films exhibited well-defined hysteresis loop, and the values of spontaneous polarization (P-s) and coercive field were 0.15 mu C/cm(2) and 20 kV/cm, respectively, confirming the presence of ferroelectricity.

We demonstrate that the structural and optical properties of a sol-gel deposited zinc oxide thin film can be tuned by varying the composition of the sol, consisting of ethylene glycol and glycerol. A systematic study of the effect of the composition of sol on the mean grain size, thickness, and defect density of the zinc oxide film is presented. About 20% glycerol content in the sol is observed to improve the quality of the film, as evaluated by X-ray diffraction and photoluminescence studies. Thus, optimizing the composition of the sol for about 60 nm thick ZnO film using 20% glycerol resulted in the zinc oxide film that is about 80% transparent in visible spectrum, exhibiting electrical resistivity of about 18 Omega cm and field-effect mobility of 0.78 cm(2)/(V s). Pure and tin doped zinc oxide (Sn:ZnO) thin films were prepared for the first time by NSP technique using aqueous solutions of zinc acetate dehydrate, tin (IV) chloride fendahydrate and methanol. X-ray diffraction patterns confirm that the films are polycrystalline in nature exhibiting hexagonal wurtzite type, with (0 0 2) as preferred orientation. The structural parameters such as lattice constant ('a' and `c'), crystallite size, dislocation density, micro strain, stress and texture coefficient were calculated from X-ray diffraction studies. Surface morphology was found to be modified with increasing Sn doping concentration. The ZnO films have high transmittance 85% in the visible region, and the transmittance is found to be decreased with the increase of Sn doping concentration. The corresponding optical band gap decreases from 3.25 to 3.08 eV. Room temperature photoluminescence reveals the sharp emission of strong UV peak at 400 nm (3.10 eV) and a strong sharp green luminescence at 528 nm (2.34 eV) in the Sn doped ZnO films. The electrical resistivity is found to be 10(6) Omega-cm at higher temperature and 10(5) Omega-cm at lower temperature. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) films with c-oriented were grown on fused quartz glass substrates at room temperature using dc reactive magnetron sputtering. The as-grown films were annealed at 700 degrees C in air and bombarded by ion beam, respectively. The effects of post-treatments on the structural and optical properties of the ZnO films were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence (PL), optical transmittance and absorption measurements. The XRD spectra indicate that the crystal quality of ZnO films has been improved by both the post-treatments. Compared with the as-grown sample, both annealed and bombarded samples exhibited blueshift in the UV emission peaks, and a strong green emission was found in the annealed ZnO film. In both optical transmittance and absorption spectra, a blueshift of the band-gap edge was observed in the bombarded film, while a redshift was observed in the annealed film. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. CO2 laser irradiation experiments on ZnO thin films are reported. The structural, optical, luminescent and vibrational properties of the samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmittance, photoluminescence (PL) and Raman measurements. XRD results show that the crystalline of the irradiated films was improved. The (002) peaks of irradiated ZnO films shift to. higher 20 angles due to the stress relaxation in the case of laser beam irradiation. From optical transmittance spectra, all films exhibit high transmittance in the visible range, the optical band edge of irradiated films showed a redshift compared with that of as-grown films. Compared with the as-grown films, the photoluminescence emission (in particular the relative intensities of visible emissions) intensities of irradiated samples enhanced. In the Raman scattering spectral both the A I. and E modes exhibited slight Raman blueshift. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Highly c-axis oriented ZnO films have been deposited at room temperature with high rates (∼50 nm·min -1) using an innovative remote plasma sputtering configuration, which allows independent control of the plasma density and the sputtering ion energy. The ZnO films deposited possess excellent crystallographic orientation, high resistivity (>10 9 Ω·m), and exhibit very low surface roughness. The ability to increase the sputtering ion energy without causing unwanted Ar + bombardment onto the substrate has been shown to be crucial for the growth of films with excellent c-axis orientation without the need of substrate heating. In addition, the elimination of the Ar + bombardment has facilitated the growth of films with very low defect density and hence very low intrinsic stress (100 MPa for 3 μm-thick films). This is over an order of magnitude lower than films grown with a standard magnetron sputtering system. © 2012 American Institute of Physics.

In recent years scientists have made rapid and significant advances in the field of semiconductor physics. One of the most important fields of current interest in materials science is the fundamental aspects and applications of conducting transparent oxide thin films (TCO). The characteristic properties of such coatings are low electrical resistivity and high transparency in the visible region. The first semitransparent and electrically conducting CdO film was reported as early as in 1907 [1]. Though early work on these films was performed out of purely scientific interest, substantial technological advances in such films were made after 1940. The technological interest in the study of transparent semiconducting films was generated mainly due to the potential applications of these materials both in industry and research. Such films demonstrated their utility as transparent electrical heaters for windscreens in the aircraft industry. However, during the last decade, these conducting transparent films have been widely used in a variety of other applications such as gas sensors [2], solar cells [3], heat reflectors [4], light emitting devices [5] and laser damage resistant coatings in high power laser technology [6]. Just a few materials dominate the current TCO industry and the two dominant markets for TCO’s are in architectural applications and flat panel displays. The architectural use of TCO is for energy efficient windows. Fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO), deposited using a pyrolysis process is the TCO usually finds maximum application. SnO2 also finds application ad coatings for windows, which are efficient in preventing radiative heat loss, due to low emissivity (0.16). Pyrolitic tin oxide is used in PV modules, touch screens and plasma displays. However indium tin oxide (ITO) is mostly used in the majority of flat panel display (FPD) applications. In FPDs, the basic function of ITO is as transparent electrodes. The volume of FPD’s produced, and hence the volume of ITO coatings produced, continues to grow rapidly. But the current increase in the cost of indium and the scarcity of this material created the difficulty in obtaining low cost TCOs. Hence search for alternative TCO materials has been a topic of active research for the last few decades. This resulted in the development of binary materials like ZnO, SnO2, CdO and ternary materials like II Zn2SnO4, CdSb2O6:Y, ZnSO3, GaInO3 etc. The use of multicomponent oxide materials makes it possible to have TCO films suitable for specialized applications because by altering their chemical compositions, one can control the electrical, optical, chemical and physical properties. But the advantages of using binary materials are the easiness to control the chemical compositions and depositions conditions. Recently, there were reports claiming the deposition of CdO:In films with a resistivity of the order of 10-5 ohm cm for flat panel displays and solar cells. However they find limited use because of Cd-Toxicity. In this regard, ZnO films developed in 1980s, are very useful as these use Zn, an abundant, inexpensive and nontoxic material. Resistivity of this material is still not very low, but can be reduced through doping with group-III elements like In, Al or Ga or with F [6]. Hence there is a great interest in ZnO as an alternative of ITO. In the present study, we prepared and characterized transparent and conducting ZnO thin films, using a cost effective technique viz Chemical Spray Pyrolysis (CSP). This technique is also suitable for large area film deposition. It involves spraying a solution, (usually aqueous) containing soluble salts of the constituents of the desired compound, onto a heated substrate.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films were deposited on quartz, silicon, and polymer substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique at different oxygen partial pressures (0.007 mbar to 0.003 mbar). Polycrystalline ZnO films were obtained at room temperature when the oxygen pressure was between 0.003 mbar and .007 mbar, above and below this pressure the films were amorphous as indicated by the X-ray diffraction (XRD). ZnO films were deposited on Al2O3 (0001) at different substrate temperatures varying from 400oC to 600oC and full width half maximum (FWHM) of XRD peak is observed to decrease as substrate temperature increases. The optical band gaps of these films were nearly 3.3 eV. A cylindrical Langmuir probe is used for the investigation of plasma plume arising from the ZnO target. The spatial and temporal variations in electron density and electron temperature are studied. Optical emission spectroscopy is used to identify the different ionic species in the plume. Strong emission lines of neutral Zn, Zn+ and neutral oxygen are observed. No electronically excited O+ cations are identified, which is in agreement with previous studies of ZnO plasma plume.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) is an electroluminescent (EL) material that can emit light in different regions of electromagnetic spectrum when electrically excited. Since ZnO is chemically stable, inexpensive and environmentally friendly material, its EL property can be useful to construct solid-state lamps for illumination or as UV emitter. We present here two wet chemical methods to prepare ZnO thin-films: the Pechini method and the sol-gel method, with both methods resulting in crystalline and transparent films with transmittance > 85% at 550 nm. These films were used to make thin-film electroluminescent devices (TFELD) using two different insulator layers: lithium fluoride (LiF) or silica (SiO2). All the devices exhibit at least two wide emission bands in the visible range centered at 420 nm and at 380 nm attributed to the electronic defects in the ZnO optical band gap. Besides these two bands, the device using SiO2 and ZnO film obtained via sol-gel exhibits an additional band in the UV range centered at 350 nm which can be attributed to excitonic emission. These emission bands of ZnO can transfer their energy when a proper dopant is present. For the devices produced the voltage-current characteristics were measured in a specific range of applied voltage. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
