Statistical approaches to study extreme events require, by definition, long time series of data. In many scientific disciplines, these series are often subject to variations at different temporal scales that affect the frequency and intensity of their extremes. Therefore, the assumption of stationarity is violated and alternative methods to conventional stationary extreme value analysis (EVA) must be adopted. Using the example of environmental variables subject to climate change, in this study we introduce the transformed-stationary (TS) methodology for non-stationary EVA. This approach consists of (i) transforming a non-stationary time series into a stationary one, to which the stationary EVA theory can be applied, and (ii) reverse transforming the result into a non-stationary extreme value distribution. As a transformation, we propose and discuss a simple time-varying normalization of the signal and show that it enables a comprehensive formulation of non-stationary generalized extreme value (GEV) and generalized Pareto distribution (GPD) models with a constant shape parameter. A validation of the methodology is carried out on time series of significant wave height, residual water level, and river discharge, which show varying degrees of long-term and seasonal variability. The results from the proposed approach are comparable with the results from (a) a stationary EVA on quasi-stationary slices of non-stationary series and (b) the established method for non-stationary EVA. However, the proposed technique comes with advantages in both cases. For example, in contrast to (a), the proposed technique uses the whole time horizon of the series for the estimation of the extremes, allowing for a more accurate estimation of large return levels. Furthermore, with respect to (b), it decouples the detection of non-stationary patterns from the fitting of the extreme value distribution. As a result, the steps of the analysis are simplified and intermediate diagnostics are possible. In particular, the transformation can be carried out by means of simple statistical techniques such as low-pass filters based on the running mean and the standard deviation, and the fitting procedure is a stationary one with a few degrees of freedom and is easy to implement and control. An open-source MAT-LAB toolbox has been developed to cover this methodology, which is available at https://github.com/menta78/tsEva/(Mentaschi et al., 2016).

Middle section module of InnoTrackTM moving walk was re-engineered according to value analysis process. Self-supporting steel structure for moving walk was created as a result of this process. Designed structure was verified and validated by prototype tests and finite element method calculations. Self-supporting steel structure replaces the original design of middle section module in InnoTrackTM. Designed structure provides higher satisfaction to customers’ needs and at the same time, it uses less resources. The redesigned middle section module provides higher value to the customer.

Ochre samples excavated from the neolithic site at Qatalhoyuk, Turkey have been compared with "native" ochres from Clearwell Caves, UK using infrared spectroscopy backed up by Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (with energy-dispersive X-rays (EDX) analysis), powder X-ray diffraction, diffuse reflection UV-Vis and atomic absorption spectroscopies. For the Clearwell Caves ochres, which range in colour from yellow-orange to red-brown, it is shown that the colour is related to the nature of the chromophore present and not to any differences in particle size. The darker red ochres contain predominantly haematite while the yellow ochre contains only goethite. The ochres from Qatalhoyuk contain only about one-twentieth of the levels of iron found in the Clearwell Caves ochres. The iron oxide pigment (haematite in all cases studied here) has been mixed with a soft lime plaster which also contains calcite and silicate (clay) minerals. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. In the last decades there was a significant increasing of the numbers of researchers that joint efforts to find alternatives to improve the development of low environmental impact technology. Materials based on renewable resources have enormous potentials of applications and are seen as alternatives for the sustainable development. Within other parameters, the sustainability depends on the energetic efficiency, which depends on the thermal insulation. Alternative materials, including vegetal fibers, can be applied to thermal insulation, where its first goal is to minimize the loss of energy. In the present research, it was experimentally analyzed the thermal behavior of fiber blankets of sisal (Agave sisalana) with and without surface treatment with oxide hidroxide (NaOH). Blankets with two densities (1100/1200 and 1300/1400 g/m2) were submitted to three rates of heat transfer (22.5 W, 40 W and 62.5 W). The analysis of the results allowed comparing the blankets treated and untreated in each situation. Others experiments were carried out to obtain the thermal conductivity (k), heat capacity (C) and the thermal diffusivity (α) of the blankets. Thermo gravimetric analyses were made to the verification of the thermal stability. Based on the results it was possible to relate qualitatively the effect of the heat transfer through the sisal blankets subjected to three heat transfer rates, corresponding to three temperature values (77 °C, 112 °C e 155 °C). To the first and second values of temperature it was verified a considerable reduction on the rate of heat transfer; nevertheless, to the third value of temperature, the surface of the blankets (treated and untreated) in contact with the heated surface of the tube were carbonized. It was also verified, through the analyses of the results of the measurements of k, C e α, that the blankets treated and untreated have values near to the conventional isolating materials, as glass wool and rock wool. It could be concluded that is technically possible the use of sisal blankets as constitutive material of thermal isolation systems in applications where the temperature do not reach values greater than 112 ºC

The aim of this work is to present a formulation of the boundary element method to analyse elastic and isotropic plates with curved boundaries. In this study the plate boundary is approximated, along each element, by a second degree polynomial relation or by a circular arch, in order to better represent the real boundary. The numerical integration is performed by the self-adaptive coordinate transformation proposed by Telles. The effective shear forces are approximated by concentrated reactions applied at the boundary element nodes, according to the alternative formulation introduced by Paiva. Some examples are presented to demonstrate the better accuracy obtained with the proposed elements.

Coarse graining is a popular technique used in physics to speed up the computer simulation of molecular fluids. An essential part of this technique is a method that solves the inverse problem of determining the interaction potential or its parameters from the given structural data. Due to discrepancies between model and reality, the potential is not unique, such that stability of such method and its convergence to a meaningful solution are issues.rnrnIn this work, we investigate empirically whether coarse graining can be improved by applying the theory of inverse problems from applied mathematics. In particular, we use the singular value analysis to reveal the weak interaction parameters, that have a negligible influence on the structure of the fluid and which cause non-uniqueness of the solution. Further, we apply a regularizing Levenberg-Marquardt method, which is stable against the mentioned discrepancies. Then, we compare it to the existing physical methods - the Iterative Boltzmann Inversion and the Inverse Monte Carlo method, which are fast and well adapted to the problem, but sometimes have convergence problems.rnrnFrom analysis of the Iterative Boltzmann Inversion, we elaborate a meaningful approximation of the structure and use it to derive a modification of the Levenberg-Marquardt method. We engage the latter for reconstruction of the interaction parameters from experimental data for liquid argon and nitrogen. We show that the modified method is stable, convergent and fast. Further, the singular value analysis of the structure and its approximation allows to determine the crucial interaction parameters, that is, to simplify the modeling of interactions. Therefore, our results build a rigorous bridge between the inverse problem from physics and the powerful solution tools from mathematics. rn

Serial intravascular ultrasound virtual histology (IVUS-VH) after implantation of metallic stents has been unable to show any changes in the composition of the scaffolded plaque overtime. The everolimus-eluting ABSORB scaffold potentially allows for the formation of new fibrotic tissue on the scaffolded coronary plaque during bioresorption. We examined the 12 month IVUS-VH changes in composition of the plaque behind the struts (PBS) following the implantation of the ABSORB scaffold. Using IVUS-VH and dedicated software, the composition of the PBS was analyzed in all patients from the ABSORB Cohort B2 trial, who were imaged with a commercially available IVUS-VH console (s5i system, Volcano Corporation, Rancho Cordova, CA, USA), immediately post-ABSORB implantation and at 12 month follow-up. Paired IVUS-VH data, recorded with s5i system, were available in 17 patients (18 lesions). The analysis demonstrated an increase in mean PBS area (2.39 ± 1.85 mm(2) vs. 2.76 ± 1.79 mm(2), P = 0.078) and a reduction in the mean lumen area (6.37 ± 0.90 mm(2) vs. 5.98 ± 0.97 mm(2), P = 0.006). Conversely, a significant decrease of 16 and 30% in necrotic core (NC) and dense calcium (DC) content, respectively, were evident (median % NC from 43.24 to 36.06%, P = 0.016; median % DC from 20.28 to 11.36%, P = 0.002). Serial IVUS-VH analyses of plaque located behind the ABSORB struts at 12-month demonstrated an increase in plaque area with a decrease in its NC and DC content. Larger studies are required to investigate the clinical impact of these findings.
