For understanding the major- and minor-groove hydration patterns of DNAs and RNAs, it is important to understand the local solvation of individual nucleobases at the molecular level. We have investigated the 2-aminopurine center dot H2O. monohydrate by two-color resonant two-photon ionization and UV/UV hole-burning spectroscopies, which reveal two isomers, denoted A and B. The electronic spectral shift delta nu of the S-1 <- S-0 transition relative to bare 9H-2-aminopurine (9H-2AP) is small for isomer A (-70 cm(-1)), while that of isomer B is much larger (delta nu = 889 cm(-1)). B3LYP geometry optimizations with the TZVP basis set predict four cluster isomers, of which three are doubly H-bonded, with H2O acting as an acceptor to a N-H or -NH2 group and as a donor to either of the pyrimidine N sites. The "sugar-edge" isomer A is calculated to be the most stable form with binding energy D-e = 56.4 kJ/mol. Isomers B and C are H-bonded between the -NH2 group and pyrimidine moieties and are 2.5 and 6.9 kJ/mol less stable, respectively. Time-dependent (TD) B3LYP/TZVP calculations predict the adiabatic energies of the lowest (1)pi pi* states of A and B in excellent agreement with the observed 0(0)(0) bands; also, the relative intensities of the A and B origin bands agree well with the calculated S-0 state relative energies. This allows unequivocal identification of the isomers. The R2PI spectra of 9H-2AP and of isomer A exhibit intense low-frequency out-of-plane overtone and combination bands, which is interpreted as a coupling of the optically excited (1)pi pi* state to the lower-lying (1)n pi* dark state. In contrast, these overtone and combination bands are much weaker for isomer B, implying that the (1)pi pi* state of B is planar and decoupled from the (1)n pi* state. These observations agree with the calculations, which predict the (1)n pi* above the (1)pi pi* state for isomer B but below the (1)pi pi* for both 9H-2AP and isomer A.

While keto-amino cytosine is the dominant species in aqueous solution, spectroscopic studies in molecular beams and in noble gas matrices show that other cytosine tautomers prevail in apolar environments. Each of these offers two or three H-bonding sites (Watson–Crick, wobble, sugar-edge). The mass- and isomer-specific S1 ← S0 vibronic spectra of cytosine·2-pyridone (Cyt·2PY) and 1-methylcytosine·2PY are measured using UV laser resonant two-photon ionization (R2PI), UV/UV depletion, and IR depletion spectroscopy. The UV spectra of the Watson–Crick and sugar-edge isomers of Cyt·2PY are separated using UV/UV spectral hole-burning. Five different isomers of Cyt·2PY are observed in a supersonic beam. We show that the Watson–Crick and sugar-edge dimers of keto-amino cytosine with 2PY are the most abundant in the beam, although keto-amino-cytosine is only the third most abundant tautomer in the gas phase. We identify the different isomers by combining three different diagnostic tools: (1) methylation of the cytosine N1–H group prevents formation of both the sugar-edge and wobble isomers and gives the Watson–Crick isomer exclusively. (2) The calculated ground state binding and dissociation energies, relative gas-phase abundances, excitation and the ionization energies are in agreement with the assignment of the dominant Cyt·2PY isomers to the Watson–Crick and sugar-edge complexes of keto-amino cytosine. (3) The comparison of calculated ground state vibrational frequencies to the experimental IR spectra in the carbonyl stretch and NH/OH/CH stretch ranges strengthen this identification.

In the present investigation some spectroscopic properties of several lanthanide squarate hydrates are reported. The Raman spectra show the same distinctive Jahn-Teller intensity pattern for non-totally symmetric modes, as previously observed for the free anion. In the case of the terbium salt, the Tb3+ emission is very intense even at room temperature, revealing an efficient excitation via the ligand electronic levels. The Tb3+ dilution in Gd3+ or La3+ hosts increases this excitation efficiency without any appreciable variation in the 5D4 excited-state lifetime. However, the Eu3+ emission is very weak, with excited states located above the 5D2 level (ca. 21 550 cm-1) being completely quenched at room temperature. At lower temperatures higher-lying levels are not so efficiently quenched. The broad band observed in the UV excitation spectra of Eu3+ and Tb3+ is easily assigned to an intra-ligand transition leading to ligand-to-lanthanide ion energy transfer processes. As observed for Tb3+, Eu3+ dilution in Gd3+ or La3+ hosts also increases the relative emission intensity mediated by the ligand, without variation in the 5D0 excited-state lifetime. The Eu3+ 5D0 excitation spectra show vibronic structures that can be interpreted on the basis of the data available from the vibrational spectra. An increase in the vibronic intensities is observed as the lanthanide concentration is increased. © 1994.

A Holstein-Anderson impurity model is presented. Both the electronic states and the vibrational mode associated to the impurity are treated within a novel 'entangled' effective medium approach (a non-perturbative, self-consistent method). Vibronic spectra and susceptibilities are readily computed for the symmetric, half-filled case. As expected, charge fluctuations (electron-phonon interactions) depletes the magnetic response (susceptibility) when compared to the no-phonon case. © 2001 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

In Lead-cadmium fluorogermanate glasses (PbF2-CdF 2-PbGeO3) the addition of metal fluorides to the base PbGeO3 glass leads to a decrease of the glass transition temperature (Tg) and to an enhancement of the ionic conductivity properties. Based on different spectroscopic techniques (19F NMR, Ge K-edge X-ryas absorption and Raman scattering) an heterogeneous glass structure is proposed at the molecular scale, which can be described by fluoride rich regions permeating the metagermanate chains. The temperature dependence of the 19F NMR lineshapes and relaxation times exhibits the qualitative and quantitative features associated with the high fluoride mobility in these systems. Eu 3+ emission and vibronic spectra are used to follow the crystallization process leading to transparent glass ceramics.

A combined spectroscopic and ab initio theoretical study of the doubly hydrogen-bonded complex of 2-pyridone (2PY) with NH3 has been performed. The S-1 <- S-0 spectrum extends up to approximate to 1200 cm(-1) above the 0(0)(0) band, close to twice the range observed for 2PY. The S-1 state nonradiative decay for vibrations above approximate to 300 cm(-1) in the NH3 complex is dramatically slowed down relative to bare 2PY. Also, the Delta v=2,4,... overtone bands of the v(1)' and v(2)' out-of-plane vibrations that dominate the low-energy spectral region of 2PY are much weaker or missing for 2PY center dot NH3, which implies that the bridging (2PY)NH center dot center dot center dot NH3 and H2NH center dot center dot center dot O=C H-bonds clamp the 2PY at a planar geometry in the S-1 state. The mass-resolved UV vibronic spectra of jet-cooled 2PY center dot NH3 and its H/D mixed isotopomers are measured using two-color resonant two-photon ionization spectroscopy. The S-0 and S-1 equilibrium structures and normal-mode frequencies are calculated by density functional (B3LYP) and correlated ab initio methods (MP2 and approximate second-order coupled-cluster, CC2). The S-1 <- S-0 vibronic assignments are based on configuration interaction singles (CIS) and CC2 calculations. A doubly H-bonded bridged structure of C-S symmetry is predicted, in agreement with that of Held and Pratt [J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1993, 115, 9718]. While the B3LYP and MP2 calculated rotational constants are in very good agreement with experiment, the calculated H2NH center dot center dot center dot O=C H-bond distance is approximate to 0.7 angstrom shorter than that derived by Held and Pratt. On the other hand, this underlines their observation that ammonia can act as a strong H-bond donor when built into an H-bonded bridge. The CC2 calculations predict the H2NH center dot center dot center dot O distance to increase by 0.2 angstrom upon S-1 <- S-0 electronic excitation, while the (2PY)NH center dot center dot center dot NH3 H-bond remains nearly unchanged. Thus, the expansion of the doubly H-bonded bridge in the excited state is asymmetric and almost wholly due to the weakening of the interaction of ammonia with the keto acceptor group.

In this paper, recent results on band A emission in chemical vapor-deposited diamond films have been analyzed within a vibronic model. The blue-band A (2.8 eV) spectra from undoped diamond films grown by two different techniques have been simulated using the same phonon density distribution g(Omega) and Huang-Rhys factor (S). The same g(Omega) at higher S gives a good fit with the green band A (2.32 eV) as well. This model provides a reasonable alternative approach to the long standing donor-acceptor pair recombination model.

The different ions doped KMgF3 single crystals are prepared by the vertical Bridgman method. The near-infrared absorption spectra for different parts of all as-growth crystals indicate that there is the best transparency in middle part. The correlation between the vibronic frequencies of Eu2+ and the site displacement of Cu+ co-doped ions is firstly studied, which indicates that Cu+ ions replace the site of the Mg2+ ions. The co-doped Eu2+ counteracts the charge misfit causing by the replacement of Mg2+ with Cu+. The overlapping of the emission spectra of the Eu2+ and the excitation spectra of the Cu+ results in the energy transfer from Eu2+ to Cu+.

The high-resolution emission spectra of KMgF3 : Eu and KMgF3 : Eu-X(X = Ce, Cr, Gd, Cu) single crystals were measured at 300 and 77 K. The vibronic side bands of Eu2+ were characterized and an assignment of the normal mode frequencies to particular vibrations has been made. The correlation between the vibronic frequencies of Eu2+ and the site substitution of other co-dopcd ions was first found. The relationship between vibronic intensity of Eu2+ and other doped ions concentration showed that Cr3+, Gd3+ ions competed K+ sites with Eu2+ ions. Ce3+ and Eu3+ occurred the electron transference. The introduction of Cu+ made for Eu2+ substuting for K+ sites.

Jet-cooled, laser-induced phosphorescence excitation spectra (LIP) of thioacetaldehyde CH3CHS, CH3CDS, CD3CHS and CD3CDS have been observed over the region 15800 - 17300 cm"^ in a continuous pyrolysis jet. The vibronic band structure of the singlet-triplet n -* n* transition were attributed to the strong coupling of the methyl torsion and aldehydic hydrogen wagging modes . The vibronic peaks have been assigned in terms of two upper electronic state (T^) vibrations; the methyl torsion mode v^g, and the aldehydic hydrogen wagging mode v^^. The electronic origin O^a^ is unequivocally assigned as follows: CH3CHS (16294.9 cm"'' ), CH3CDS (16360.9 cm"'' ), CD3CHS (16299.7 cm"^ ), and CD3CDS (16367.2 cm"'' ). To obtain structural and dynamical information about the two electronic states, potential surfaces V(e,a) for the 6 (methyl torsion) and a (hydrogen wagging) motions were generated by ab initio quantum mechanical calculations with a 6-3 IG* basis in which the structural parameters were fully relaxed. The kinetic energy coefficients BQ(a,e) , B^(a,G) , and the cross coupling term B^(a,e) , were accurately represented as functions of the two active coordinates, a and 9. The calculations reveal that the molecule adopts an eclipsed conformation for the lower Sq electronic state (a=0°,e=0"') with a barrier height to internal rotation of 541.5 cm"^ which is to be compared to 549.8 cm"^ obtained from the microwave experiment. The conformation of the upper T^ electronic state was found to be staggered (a=24 . 68° ,e=-45. 66° ) . The saddle point in the path traced out by the aldehyde wagging motion was calculated to be 175 cm"^ above the equilibrium configuration. The corresponding maxima in the path taken by methyl torsion was found to be 322 cm'\ The small amplitude normal vibrational modes were also calculated to aid in the assignment of the spectra. Torsional-wagging energy manifolds for the two states were derived from the Hamiltonian H(a,e) which was solved variationally using an extended two dimensional Fourier expansion as a basis set. A torsionalinversion band spectrum was derived from the calculated energy levels and Franck-Condon factors, and was compared with the experimental supersonic-jet spectra. Most of the anomalies which were associated with the interpretation of the observed spectrum could be accounted for by the band profiles derived from ab initio SCF calculations. A model describing the jet spectra was derived by scaling the ab initio potential functions. The global least squares fitting generates a triplet state potential which has a minimum at (a=22.38° ,e=-41.08°) . The flatter potential in the scaled model yielded excellent agreement between the observed and calculated frequency intervals.

The excitonic splitting between the S-1 and S-2 electronic states of the doubly hydrogen-bonded dimer 2-pyridone center dot 6-methyl-2-pyridone (2PY center dot 6M2PY) is studied in a supersonic jet, applying two-color resonant two-photon ionization (2C-R2PI), UV-UV depletion, and dispersed fluorescence spectroscopies. In contrast to the C-2h symmetric (2-pyridone) 2 homodimer, in which the S-1 <- S-0 transition is symmetry-forbidden but the S-2 <- S-0 transition is allowed, the symmetry-breaking by the additional methyl group in 2PY center dot 6M2PY leads to the appearance of both the S-1 and S-2 origins, which are separated by Delta(exp) = 154 cm(-1). When combined with the separation of the S-1 <- S-0 excitations of 6M2PY and 2PY, which is delta = 102 cm(-1), one obtains an S-1/S-2 exciton coupling matrix element of V-AB, el = 57 cm(-1) in a Frenkel-Davydov exciton model. The vibronic couplings in the S-1/S-2 <- S-0 spectrum of 2PY center dot 6M2PY are treated by the Fulton-Gouterman single-mode model. We consider independent couplings to the intramolecular 6a' vibration and to the intermolecular sigma' stretch, and obtain a semi-quantitative fit to the observed spectrum. The dimensionless excitonic couplings are C(6a') = 0.15 and C(sigma') = 0.05, which places this dimer in the weak-coupling limit. However, the S-1/S-2 state exciton splittings Delta(calc) calculated by the configuration interaction singles method (CIS), time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TD-HF), and approximate second-order coupled-cluster method (CC2) are between 1100 and 1450 cm(-1), or seven to nine times larger than observed. These huge errors result from the neglect of the coupling to the optically active intra-and intermolecular vibrations of the dimer, which lead to vibronic quenching of the purely electronic excitonic splitting. For 2PY center dot 6M2PY the electronic splitting is quenched by a factor of similar to 30 (i.e., the vibronic quenching factor is Gamma(exp) = 0.035), which brings the calculated splittings into close agreement with the experimentally observed value. The 2C-R2PI and fluorescence spectra of the tautomeric species 2-hydroxypyridine center dot 6-methyl-2-pyridone (2HP center dot 6M2PY) are also observed and assigned. Visible, near-infrared, IR and Raman spectra of magnesian gaspeite are presented. Nickel ion is the main source of the electronic bands as it is the principal component in the mineral where as the bands in IR and Raman spectra are due to the vibrational processes in the carbonate ion as an entity. The combination of electronic absorption and vibrational spectra (including near-infrared, FTIR and Raman) of magnesian gaspeite are explained in terms of the cation co-ordination and the behaviour of CO32– anion in the Ni–Mg carbonate. The electronic absorption spectrum consists of three broad and intense bands at 8130, 13160 and 22730 cm–1 due to spin-allowed transitions and two weak bands at 20410 and 30300 cm–1 are assigned to spin-forbidden transitions of Ni2+ in an octahedral symmetry. The crystal field parameters evaluated from the observed bands are Dq = 810; B = 800 and C = 3200 cm–1. The two bands in the near-infrared spectrum at 4330 and 5130 cm–1 are overtone and combination of CO32– vibrational modes. For the carbonate group, infrared bands are observed at 1020 cm–1(1 ), 870 cm–1 (2), 1418 cm–1 (3) and 750 cm–1 (4), of which3, the asymmetric stretching mode is most intense. Three well resolved Raman bands at 1571, 1088 and 331 cm–1 are assigned to 3, 1 and MO stretching vibrations.
