The sharp increase in microwave power loss (the reverse of what has previously been reported) at the transition temperature in high-Tc superconducting systems such as YBaCu oxide (polycrystalline bulk and thin films obtained by the laser ablation technique) and BiPbSrCaCu oxide is reported. The differences between DC resistivity ( rho ) and the microwave power loss (related to microwave surface resistance) are analysed from the data obtained by a simultaneous measurement set-up. The influence of various parameters, such as preparation conditions, thickness and aging of the sample and the probing frequency (6-18 GHz), on the variation of microwave power loss with temperature is outlined.

When examined using continuous wave electron paramagnetic resonance and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers, the high T-c superconductors give rise to intense, low field, 'non-resonant' absorption signals in the superconducting state. This phenomenon can be used as a highly sensitive, contactless technique for the detection and characterization of superconductivity even in samples containing only minute amounts of the superconducting phase. Further, it can also be applied to the determination of material parameters of interest such as J(c) and H-c2 in addition to being a powerful way of distinguishing between weak-link superconductivity and bulk superconductivity. The details of these aspects are discussed

Austenitic stainless steel presents phase changes caused by heat treatment and welding processes. Because it represents a problem in the design of high-homogeneity magnets, we have been studying the magnetic properties of Ti alloys for their use instead of stainless steel as structural material for superconducting magnet construction. In this work, we present the comparative study of the influence of magnetic properties of steel and Ti alloys on the magnetic-field homogeneity of a superconducting coil through numerical calculation using the measured magnetic properties. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. The well-known polymeric precursor route is a simple and low-cost sol-gel method based on the preparation of an aqueous precursor solution of metals followed by the addition of a water-soluble polymer. This method consists of a polyesterification process between a metal chelate complex by using a hydroxycarboxylic acid and a polyhydroxy alcohol. In this work, citric acid (CA), tartaric acid (TA) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) are used as the hydroxycarboxylic acid and ethylene glycol (EG) is used as the polyhydroxy alcohol. The effects of the precursor pH solution, time and temperature of polymerization step as well as the combination of different chelating agents in order to obtain nanoscopic YBa2Cu3Oy samples were traced. Since the discovery of the high Tc superconductors, several works have been made about the different properties of these materials. Anelastic spectroscopy experiments are sensitive tools to the study of defects in solids and phase transitions. By this technique, we can distinguish the different types of atomic jumps that happen to different temperatures. The intensity of the peaks in the anelastic spectrum and the step in the torsional modulus are related with the concentration of the relaxing entities, and the position of the peaks is determined by its mobility. In this paper, the study on Bi and Sm based superconducting oxides was made by anelastic relaxation measurements using a torsion pendulum. The samples were submitted to successive thermal treatments in high vacuum, in the temperature range between 100 K and 650 K, heating rate about 1 K/min. For Bi based superconducting oxides the results shown two peaks, that were associated to interstitial oxygen mobility and to orthorhombic to monoclinic phase transition. For Sm based superconducting oxides the results shown a relaxation peak that was attributed to the jumps of the oxygen atoms in the inter-chains O1 and 05 of the lattice.

Using a genuinely tridimensional approach to the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory, we have studied the local magnetic field profile of a mesoscopic superconductor in the so-called SQUID geometry, i.e., a square with a hole at the center connected to the outside vacuum through a very thin slit. Our investigation was carried out in both the Meissner and the mixed state. We have also studied the influence of the temperature on the space distribution of the local magnetic field. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd.

A study of the bulk formation of YBa2Cu3O7-x from the Y2BaCuO5 plus liquid regime reveals that phase formation occurs at appreciable rates below 950°C in air. This result has been observed for phase-pure YBa2Cu3O7-x starting material given two types of heat treatment: held at 1100°C and slow-cooled from 1030°C at 6°C/h or heat-treated isothermally. Differential thermal analysis, with a cooling rate of 10°C/min indicates that the degree of undercooling for the peritectic formation of YBa2Cu3O7-x is greater than 100°C. © 1994.

The microstructures of YBa2Cu3O7-δ ceramics prepared from freeze dried powders and containing an excess of CuO have been studied by analytical electron microscopy. Special attention has been paid to the interfacial microstructure. It was found that a liquid phase formed during sintering between 890°C and 920°C and this promoted grain growth and densification. Both clean grain boundaries and boundaries containing an amorphous intergranular film, which was rich in Cu, have been observed. Both CuO and BaCuO2 were present as secondary phases.
