Porosity in starch consolidation casting technique is rightly related to original size and morphology of starch granules, leaving a pore structure after burning out. This work reports the results for the addition of different native potato and corn starch proportions in suspension,; with TiO(2) (rutile) powder. Gelling temperature have been defined after observation under light microscopy using a heating stage. Analysis of porous network and isolated pores have been clone from images of samples surfaces obtained by depth from focus reconstruction, revealing a qualitative correlation of pores characteristics and starches additions in suspensions, suggesting that the presence of isolated or interconnected pores can be handled by starches selection to control the amylopectin and amylose contents in slurries. Also, the analysis of porous fraction distribution shows no consistent pattern through specimens' volume according to starches in mixtures.

Several researches have been developed in order to verify the porosity effect over the ceramic material properties. The starch consolidation casting (SCC) allows to obtain porous ceramics by using starch as a binder and pore forming element. This work is intended to describe the porous mathematical behavior and the mechanical resistance at different commercial starch concentration. Ceramic samples were made with alumina and potato and corn starches. The slips were prepared with 10 to 50 wt% of starch. The specimens were characterized by apparent density measurements and three-point flexural test associated to Weibull statistics. Results indicated that the porosity showed a first-order exponential equation e(-x/c) increasing in both kinds of starches, so it was confirmed that the alumina ceramic porosity is related to the kind of starch used. The mechanical resistance is represented by a logarithmic expression R = A + B/1+10((Log(x0)-P)C).

In this paper, pre-gelling starch was used to consolidate alumina-dense ceramic suspensions. The colloidal processing of the ceramic was prepared with alumina and commercial potato starch, and slips were prepared with 55 vol% of solids and 0.5 wt.% of starch. This small amount of starch was possible because of a previous pre-gelling starch treatment, resulting in more homogeneous suspensions and particles smaller than starch granules. Additionally, Sucrose was also used as a dispersion aid. After sintering, the samples were analysed according to their mechanical properties. These processes produced ceramics with a 93% relative density, 325 MPa flexural strength, and a Weibull module whose value wits m = 10, maintaining the capacity of this process to produce complex geometric shaped ceramics. The main goal of this work is to demonstrate that the use of recycled material originated from SiC ceramics is viable. These ceramics were produced by commercial starch consolidation process. Before calcination stage, surplus of these materials always appears. This surplus is rich in SiC and starch. Samples were made by material previously milled in automatic mortar and sieved (100 Tyler). Later, 10% of distilled water was added to the material and the mixture was pressed at 40 MPa. In order to characterize the ceramic, three point flexural test were made, according to the ASTM C1161/94 norm. The results were analyzed by Weibull statistical method. Apparent density and porosity measures also were made, according to ASTM C20/87 norm. A verification of the surface was made in the fracture area by the depth from focus method and SEM image analysis. The results showed that the recycling process is fully viable, being a good economic option and reduce possible pollutant effect to the environment.

The presence of pores in ceramics is directly related to the chosen forming process. So, in the starch consolidation method, the ceramics show, after burning, pores with morphology similar to that presented by this organic material. on the other hand, the increase in solid load leads up to alterations in dispersion viscosity, increasing the thermal stresses during drying and sintering processes. In order to verify the solid percentage influence in ceramic final properties, samples were prepared with silicon carbide in different compositions using or not starch as binder agent and pore forming element. The characterization of the ceramic pieces was performed by superficial roughness measurements, porosity besides by optical and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed ceramics with SiC and starch presented physical and microscopic properties slightly higher in relation to those with only ceramic powder in their composition. The presence of organic material, agglomerated and foam during the forming were essential for the final properties of the studied samples.

Engineering ceramics have found use in many applications, such as engine parts, ball bearings, artificial bone and hip replacements and gyroscopes, because of their good chemical inertness, hardness, high temperature stability and excellent wear resistance. Oxide ceramic may meet these demands. Alumina (Al2O3) ceramics offer a high potential for many engineering applications, such as wear- and/or corrosion-resistant components, and as material for substrates or housings in microelectronic devices. Alumina is used among other things for seal ring, draw-cones, guides, water mixing tapes, bearing parts, medical prostheses and cutting tools. Measurements of the elastic energy loss and modulus (anelastic spectroscopy) as a function of temperature can distinguish among the different atomic jumps, which occurs in the various phases or at different local ordering. In this paper, it is reported anelastic relaxation measurements in Al2O3 samples using commercial starch. These measurements were carried out in a torsion pendulum operating in frequencies around 40 Hz. The results shown strongly influence of the type of forming in the elastic modulus obtained by anelastic relaxation measurements.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the addition of xanthan gum and glycerol to the starch of green pea with high content of AM (cv. Utrillo) in the preparation of films and their physical characteristics. Filmogenic solution (FS) with different levels of pea starch (3, 4, and 5%), xanthan gum (0, 0.05, and 0.1%), and glycerol (glycerol-starch ratio of 1: 5 w/w) were studied. The FS was obtained by boiling (5 min), followed by autoclaving for 1 h at 120 degrees C. The films were prepared by casting. Films prepared only with pea starch were mechanically resistant when compared to other films, prepared with corn, cassava, rice, and even other pea cultivars (yellow, commercial). The tensile strength of these films is comparable to synthetic films prepared with high-density polyethylene and linear low-density polyethylene. However, they are films of low elasticity when compared to other films, such as rice starch films, and especially when compared to polyethylene films. The increased concentration of starch in the solution increased the puncture force. The increased concentration of glycerol slightly decreased the film crystallinity and interfered in the mechanical properties of the films, causing reduction of the maximum values of tensile strength, strain at break, and puncture force. The plasticizer also caused an increase of elongation at break. Xanthan gum was important to formation of films; however, it did not affect their mechanical properties.

A pH indicator film based on cassava starch plasticized with sucrose and inverted sugar and incorporated with grape and spinach extracts as pH indicator sources (anthocyanin and chlorophyll) has been developed, and its packaging properties have been assessed. A second-order central composite design (2(2)) with three central points and four star points was used to evaluate the mechanical properties (tensile strength, tensile strength at break, and elongation at break percentage), moisture barrier, and microstructure of the films, and its potential as a pH indicator packaging. The films were prepared by the casting technique and conditioned under controlled conditions (75% relative humidity and 23 degrees C), at least 4 days before the analyses. The materials were exposed to different pH solutions (0, 2, 7, 10, and 14) and their color parameters (L*, a*, b*, and haze) were measured by transmittance. Grape and spinach extracts have affected the material characterization. Film properties (mechanical properties and moisture barrier) were strongly influenced by extract concentration presenting lower results than for the control. Films containing a higher concentration of grape extract presented a greater color change at different pH`s suggesting that anthocyanins are more effective as pH indicators than chlorophyll or the mixture of both extracts. Biodegradable films based on cassava starch and with addition of natural antimicrobial ingredients were prepared using the casting technique. The tensile properties tensile strength (TS) [MPa] and percent elongation (E) at break [%] and the water vapor transmission (WVT) of the biodegradable films were evaluated and compared with the control (without antimicrobial ingredients). The evaluation of the Colony Forming Units per gram [CFU/g] of pan bread slices packed with the best biodegradable films, in terms of packaging performance, was also determined. The addition onto the matrix of only clove and cinnamon powders could reduce the films WVT when compared to the control, however TS and E were lower than the control and the effect of cinnamon was milder regarding this property. Since water activity of the pan bread slices packed with the biodegradable films increased considerably during the storage period, the antimicrobial effect could not be clearly determined. The properties of edible films are influenced by several factors, including thickness. The purpose of this paper was to study the influence of thickness on the viscoelasticity properties, water vapor permeability, color and opacity of cassava starch edible films. These films were prepared by a casting technique, the film-forming solutions were 1, 2, 3 and 4% (w/v) of starch, heated to 70degreesC. Different thicknesses were obtained by putting 15 to 70 g of each solution on plexiglass plates. After drying at 30degreesC and ambient relative humidity, these samples were placed for 6 days at RH of 75%, at 22degreesC. The sample thicknesses were determined by a digital micrometer (+/-0.001 mm), as the average of nine different points. The viscoelasticity properties were determined by stress relaxation tests with a texture analyser TA.XT2i (SMS), being applied the Burgers model of four parameters. The water vapor permeability was determined with a gravimetric method, and color and opacity were determined using a Miniscan XE colorimeter, operated according to the Hunterlab method. All the tests were carried out in duplicate at 22degreesC. Practically, the four visco-elasticity properties calculated by the Burgers model had the same behavior, increasing with the thickness of all films, according to a power law model. The water vapor permeability and the color difference increased linearly with the thickness (0.013-0.144 mm) of all films prepared with solution of 1 to 4% of starch. on the other hand, the effect of the variation of the thickness over the opacity, was more important in the films with 1 and 2% of starch. It can be concluded that the control of the thickness in the elaboration of starch films by the casting technique is of extreme importance.

Porous ceramics can be produced by adding starch (corn, potato) and protein (animal or vegetable) to raw material as pore forming element. In this study, titanium dioxide ceramics were formed by vegetable protein consolidation. Soybean was chosen as the binding agent and pore forming. The samples, which were produced in cylindrical shape, had the following processing: material mixture, gelling, drying, pre-sintering and sintering. Heated platinum microscopy were performed by using suspensions with different compositions in order to verify protein gelling capacity and better know the temperature in which this process occurs. The samples were characterized by apparent porosity and roughness measurement. Besides, imaging by light microscopy was also performed in order to determine the sample morphology and porosity. © (2012) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.
