Using a multiple baseline across subject areas design, the effect of a package intervention consisting of the Picture Exchange Communication System and differential reinforcement of alternative behavior to decrease screaming behavior of a child with autism was examined. Results showed that the intervention decreased the screaming behavior of the participant.

Screaming and other types of disruptive vocalization are commonly observed among nursing home residents. Depressive symptoms are also frequently seen in this group, although the relationship between disruptive vocalization and depressive symptoms is unclear. Accordingly, we sought to examine this relationship in older nursing home residents. We undertook a controlled comparison of 41 vocally disruptive nursing home residents and 43 non-vocally-disruptive nursing home residents. All participants were selected to have Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores of at least 10. Participants had a mean age of 81.0 years (range 63-97 years) and had a mean MMSE score of 17.8 (range 10-29). Nurse ratings of disruptive vocalization according to a semioperationalized definition were validated against the noisy behavior subscale of the Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory. Subjects were independently rated for depressive symptoms by a psychiatrist using the Dementia Mood Assessment Scale, the Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia, and the Depressive Signs Scale. Vocally disruptive nursing home residents scored significantly higher than controls on each of these three depression-in-dementia scales. These differences remained significant when the effects of possible confounding variables of cognitive impairment, age, and sex were removed. We conclude that depressive symptoms are associated with disruptive vocalization and may have an etiological role in the generation of disruptive vocalization behaviors in elderly nursing home residents.

The morphological characteristics of the mandible of adult Chaetophractus vellerosus (Gray, 1865) and Zaedyus pichiy (Desmarest, 1804) were studied to establish its generalized design and to identify inter- and intra- (sexual) specific differences. Morphological descriptions were complemented with the application of univariate and multivariate (analysis of correlation matrices, PCA, discriminant analysis) techniques. The mandible of both species is very similar, and is characterized by elevated condyle, well developed angular process, distinct coronoid process, tooth row which extends to the rear end of the angle between body and ramus, and unfused but firm symphysis. Although both armadillos are omnivorous, a more slender configuration of the jaw in Z. pichiy could be indicative of a better adaptation of its masticatory apparatus to insectivory. The PCA showed an almost total segregation of both species on PC1 (47.7% of the total variance), with C. vellerosus being associated to mandibles taller and with wider body and ramus. Zaedyus pichiy was characterized by heavy loadings of length parameters on PC2 (22.6% of the variance). A small degree of sexual dimorphism was found, with size-based differences in C. vellerosus (larger mandibles in females) and shape-based differences in Z. pichiy (taller mandibles in males, longer ones in females). Correlations between variables were higher in males of both species, indicating a more stable shape of the mandible than in females. The selected parameters to discriminate sexes were the body length of the mandible in C. vellerosus (correct classification: ca. 86% in males, 81% in females), and the height of the mandible at the level of the last tooth in Z. pichiy (near 85% of right assignment in both sexes). The inclusion of a new variable (body length) in the latter species improved the classification of the females to 100%. Teeth are typically 10 in C. vellerosus and 9 in Z. pichiy, but aberrancies in this basic number, such as unilateral or bilateral extra or fewer teeth, are common.

Dans les centres d’hébergement et de soins de longue durée (CHSLD), jusqu’à 80 % des personnes admises vivent avec une démence (Conseil des aînés, 2007). Parmi ces personnes âgées, plusieurs crient. Ce comportement a fait l’objet de quelques études, mais ces études ne fournissent pas une compréhension des sens de ces cris qui pourrait orienter le choix d’interventions face à ces personnes et leur entourage. À l’aide de la perspective infirmière de Leininger (2001) et de la théorie de la communication et des interactions à l’intérieur de triades d’Adams et Gardiner (2005), le but de cette étude était de décrire les sens des cris de personnes âgées vivant avec une démence et les facteurs les influençant en tenant compte de la perspective des personnes âgées, de leurs aidants familiaux et de leurs soignants. Pour atteindre ce but, l’ethnographie critique a été choisie comme méthode. L’étude s’est découlée dans un CHSLD au sein duquel sept triades, composées de personnes âgées vivant avec une démence qui crient, d’aidants familiaux principaux et de soignants, ont été recrutées selon un échantillonnage théorique. Diverses méthodes de collecte des données ont été utilisées dont l’observation des personnes âgées et du milieu et des entrevues semi-dirigées auprès des aidants et soignants. L’analyse des données a été effectuée à l’aide des quatre approches proposées par Spradley (1979) soit l’analyse : des domaines, taxonomique, componentielle et thématique. Les résultats ont permis d’identifier des thèmes sur les sens des cris et sur les facteurs influençant ceux-ci. Les cris peuvent avoir pour sens la vulnérabilité, la souffrance et la perte de sens vécues par la personne âgée. Ce comportement peut aussi indiquer diverses finalités, par exemple l’expression d’insatisfactions ou d’émotions. Ces finalités peuvent être distinguées à partir de critères de modulation tels que la prévisibilité des cris ou un faciès émotif. Par ailleurs, divers aspects rendent les sens des cris singuliers. La stabilité et la flexibilité dans la façon d’organiser les soins ainsi que l’effet réciproque entre les personnes âgées qui crient et les autres personnes dans le CHSLD se sont dégagées comme étant des facteurs qui influencent les sens des cris. Il s’est aussi révélé que les cris de chaque personne âgée peuvent être considérés comme un langage unique que les aidants et les soignants sont en mesure d’apprendre et qui influence l’interprétation des sens des cris. L’accompagnement de la personne âgée, en tenant compte de ses volontés, ses besoins et de sa personnalité, les fluctuations dans les relations de pouvoir au sein des triades personnes âgées-aidants-soignants et les sentiments d’impuissance et de culpabilité des aidants et des soignants sont d’autres facteurs qui influencent les cris. Les connaissances découlant de cette étude augmentent la compréhension sur les sens des cris des personnes âgées vivant avec une démence. Elles ont des implications pour les divers champs d’activités des infirmières et qui pourront contribuer à offrir des soins culturellement cohérents et caring pour les personnes âgées vivant avec une démence et leur entourage.

Every year around 100 million male piglets are castrated in the EU, usually without anaesthesia or post-operative analgesia. This surgical intervention is painful and stressful. Several main players within the pig industry have voluntarily agreed to end the practice of surgical pig castration in the EU by 2018. One alternative to castration is entire male pig production. However, entire males behave differently than castrates, for example, by performing more mounting behaviour, which is suggested to be a welfare problem. The aim of our study was to develop a comprehensive ethogram of different types of mounting and to investigate properties, causes and consequences of mounting behaviour in finishing pigs. The study included 80 entire male and 80 female pigs from two farrowing batches born six weeks apart. Mixed sex and single-sex housing of pigs are both common in pig farming, so to ensure our study was representative, the 160 pigs were assigned to social groups of 20 in three treatments: entire male pigs only (MM, 2 groups, n = 40), entire females only (FF, 2 groups, n = 40) and entire males and females mixed together (MF, 4 groups, n = 80). Measurements took place during the final six weeks before slaughter (between 63.5 and 105.5 kg). Observations of mounting behaviour on 12 days per batch suggested that: (i) males mounted more than females, (ii) within sex, there was no effect of treatment on the amount of mounting (although the statistical power of the study to detect these effects was low), and (iii) there were individual differences in mounting that were stable over time (within sex). Classification of mounting into different categories revealed that sexual mounting was most common overall and in males but only rare in females. Compared to other types of mounting (e.g. caused by crowding or during a fight), sexual mounts lasted longer and provoked more screaming by the recipient. There were no relationships between mounting behaviour on the one hand and dominance rank in food competition tests, the circulating levels of sex hormones (oestradiol, testosterone and progesterone) at the end of the study, the health scores (lameness and scratches) or weight gain on the other hand. The stable individual differences of mounting over time suggest that mounting behaviour is a trait of the individual rather than the appearance of random outbreaks. However, these differences in mounting cannot be explained by dominance behaviour or by differences in sex hormone concentrations that could indicate the onset of puberty. Mounting behaviour and in particular sexual mounting provoked high pitched screaming of the recipients indicating that mounting is a welfare problem. PURPOSE A case is presented and a systematic review of the literature is provided to update our current knowledge of induction of fear by cortical stimulation. METHODS We present a case of refractory epilepsy associated with a lesion where fear could be induced by intraoperative electrical stimulation of the posterior inner part of the superior temporal gyrus. We performed a systematic review of the literature using PubMed with the key words "epilepsy AND emotion", "cortical stimulation AND emotion," and "human brain stimulation AND behavior". RESULTS Intraoperative cortical stimulation of the inner part of the posterior superior temporal gyrus reliably induced fear and progressive screaming behavior. Stimulation through subdural grid electrodes did not induce this phenomenon. A systematic review of the literature identified fear induction by stimulation of different widespread cortical areas including the temporal pole, the insula, and the anterior cingulate cortex. The posterior part of the superior temporal gyrus has so far not been associated with fear induction after electrical stimulation. CONCLUSION Although our observation suggests that this area of the brain could be part of a network involved in the elicitation of fear, dysfunction of this network induced by epilepsy could also explain the observed phenomenon. Electrophysiologic and imaging studies must be conducted to improve our understanding of the cortical networks forming the neuroanatomical substrate of higher brain functions and experiences such as fear.

Tis the season of the National Basketball Association finals and the beginning of the Professional Women's Basketball Association. The skills of collaboration and teamwork required to achieve the ballet of basketball is learned by players over a number of years. On school grounds everywhere, children are learning the techniques and skills necessary to play the game of basketball. Recently, I saw a coach on the sidelines screaming at a young player to make her free-throws, and if she missed, she would have to run laps. This reminded me of traditional services to families which threaten, or at best demand a certain level of performance of parents without providing any true "coaching". I often watch our college coach work from a strengths perspective with the team on minute techniques such as the match-up defense and in-bounds plays. This is the approach that family preservation must employ with families, programs, and their communities.

La relación entre los videojuegos y el mundo de la educación es y ha sido tormentosa, con amores y odios, con sus altibajos. Pero lo que es indudable es que los videojuegos son una realidad en el mundo actual y una potente industria. Y además, los juegos siempre han jugado un papel fundamental en la educación. Aunque su incorporación a la actividad académica no ha sido todo lo ágil que hubiera sido conveniente, los videojuegos ya forman parte de la universidad. En este artículo vamos a presentar algunas de las iniciativas que hemos llevado a cabo desde que en el año 2002 incorporamos los videojuegos en nuestras actividades académicas, tanto docentes como investigadoras. MadUniversity es un videojuego que dio lugar a varios proyectos final de carrera de la Ingeniería en Informática. Screaming Racers es un videojuego diseñado y desarrollado para ser utilizado como plataforma de experimentación de técnicas en inteligencia artificial basadas en la neuroevolución. The Conference Interpreter (CoIn) es un videojuego para la práctica del inglés desarrollado para apoyar una tesis doctoral. GameLearning es una colección de minijuegos conceptuales para la adquisición de habilidades directivas. ABPgame es la aplicación de la metodología basada en proyectos a varias asignaturas de las titulaciones de Ingeniería en Informática y del Grado en Ingeniería Multimedia que realizan un proyecto común: un videojuego. PLMan es un sistema gamificado que ayuda a desarrollar habilidades de pensamiento lógico, a través del lenguaje Prolog. Nuestro objetivo es mostrar la utilidad de los videojuegos y sus múltiples aplicaciones en el entorno universitario: como objetos de aprendizaje por medio de videojuegos educativos (serious games); como proyectos informáticos complejos para ser desarrollados por nuestros estudiantes; como entorno de experimentación para comprobar la validez de las investigaciones en inteligencia artificial; y finalmente como filosofía a aplicar al campo de la educación, lo que se ha etiquetado como gamificación.
