The absolute responses of the NPL liquid scintillation spectrometers to monoenergetic neutrons and gammas were measured at various energies in the ranges 1.2 - 17 MeV approximately for neutrons and 0.28 - 1.8 MeV for gammas. Additional measurements of the proton light output function were also carried out. Calculated responses were then obtained for the larger detector using the programs NRESP7 and PHRESP, and compared with the absolute measurements. Finally, response matrices for this detector were generated using responses calculated at closely spaced energies.

Commercially available LaBr3:5% Ce3+ scintillators show with photomultiplier tube readout about 2.7% energy resolution for the detection of 662 keV γ-rays. Here we will show that by co-doping LaBr3:Ce3+ with Sr2+ or Ca2+ the resolution is improved to 2.0%. Such an improvement is attributed to a strong reduction of the scintillation light losses that are due to radiationless recombination of free electrons and holes during the earliest stages (1–10 ps) inside the high free charge carrier density parts of the ionization track.

A time efficient optical model is proposed for GATE simulation of a LYSO scintillation matrix coupled to a photomultiplier. The purpose is to avoid the excessively long computation time when activating the optical processes in GATE. The usefulness of the model is demonstrated by comparing the simulated and experimental energy spectra obtained with the dual planar head equipment for dosimetry with a positron emission tomograph ( DoPET). The procedure to apply the model is divided in two steps. Firstly, a simplified simulation of a single crystal element of DoPET is used to fit an analytic function that models the optical attenuation inside the crystal. In a second step, the model is employed to calculate the influence of this attenuation in the energy registered by the tomograph. The use of the proposed optical model is around three orders of magnitude faster than a GATE simulation with optical processes enabled. A good agreement was found between the experimental and simulated data using the optical model. The results indicate that optical interactions inside the crystal elements play an important role on the energy resolution and induce a considerable degradation of the spectra information acquired by DoPET. Finally, the same approach employed by the proposed optical model could be useful to simulate a scintillation matrix coupled to a photomultiplier using single or dual readout scheme.

A combined method for evaluating radon (Rn-222) and progeny (Pb-214 and Bi-214) in water was developed by using inexpensive alpha scintillation Counting and gamma ray spectrometry through NaI(Tl) scintillation detectors. A groundwater sample collected at the Pocos de Caldas alkaline massif in Brazil was submitted to the technique in order to assure its applicability by comparing the volumetric activities by different methods. Similar volumetric activity was determined for Pb-214 and Bi-214 in the sample analyzed that is compatible with the expected condition of radioactive equilibrium between these nuclides. The combined method was successfully used to analyze groundwater samples from Guarani aquifer in S (a) over tildeo Paulo State, Brazil, and the results of the measurements indicated that Pb-214 and Bi-214 provide useful information concerning the evaluation of the drinking water quality in terms of radiological aspects. This is because they are directly identified in the water samples, without the need of requiring the assumption of the establishment of the transient equilibrium condition with its parent Rn-222. In this work, GdAlO3:Pr3+ was successfully prepared by the Pechini method at lower temperatures when compared to others methods such as solid-state synthesis and sol-gel process. In accordance to the XRD data, the fully crystalline single-phase GdAlO3 could be obtained at 900 degrees C. Luminescence measurements indicate Gd -> Pr3+ energy transfer. In the emission spectra, the P-3(0) ->(3) H-4 (blue emission) and D-1(2) ->(3) H-4 (red emission) transitions of Pr3+ ions can be observed and the ratio between their intensities depends on the Pr3+ content due to the cross-relaxation phenomenon.

Abstract Short intense pulses of fast neutrons were produced in a two stage laser-driven experiment. Protons were accelerated by means of the Target Normal Sheath Acceleration (TNSA) method using the TITAN facility at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Neutrons were obtained following interactions of the protons with a secondary lithium fluoride (LiF) target. The properties of the neutron flux were studied using BC-400 plastic scintillation detectors and the neutron time of flight (nTOF) technique. The detector setup and the experimental conditions were simulated with the Geant4 toolkit. The effects of different components of the experimental setup on the nTOF were studied. Preliminary results from a comparison between experimental and simulated nTOF distributions are presented.

In this study, it was developed a methodology for the determination of the dispersion of a gaseous tracer in porous media using the radiotracer technique. In order to evaluate several porous media, a cylindrical filter was constructed in PVC and connected to a system with constant flow. Inside this unit silica crystals (16-20) mesh was used as porous media and CH3Br (Methyl Bromide) marked with 82Br was used as radiotracer. An instantaneous pulse of tracer was applied in the system entrance and registered by two NaI (3x3)” scintillation detectors located one before and the other after the filter. The curves produced by the radioactive cloud and recorded by the detector were analyzed statistically using the weighted moment method. The mathematical model one considered as great dispersion of tracer was used to evaluate the flow conditions inside the filter system. The results show us that the weight moment method associated with radiotracer techniques is useful to evaluated an industrial filter and allows to measure the residence time distribution, τ, and the axial dispersion, DAB, gas in a porous medium.

Monte Carlo (MC) simulation techniques are becoming very common in the Medical Physicists community. MC can be used for modeling Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) and for dosimetry calculations. 188Re, is a promising candidate for radiotherapeutic production and understanding the mechanisms of the radioresponse of tumor cells "in vitro" is of crucial importance as a first step before "in vivo" studies. The dosimetry of 188Re, used to target different lines of cancer cells, has been evaluated by the MC code GEANT4. The simulations estimate the average energy deposition/per event in the biological samples. The development of prototypes for medical imaging, based on LaBr3:Ce scintillation crystals coupled with a position sensitive photomultiplier, have been studied using GEANT4 simulations. Having tested, in the simulation, surface treatments different from the one applied to the crystal used in our experimental measurements, we found out that the Energy Resolution (ER) and the Spatial Resolution (SR) could be improved, in principle, by machining in a different way the lateral surfaces of the crystal. We have then studied a system able to acquire both echographic and scintigraphic images to let the medical operator obtain the complete anatomic and functional information for tumor diagnosis. The scintigraphic part of the detector is simulated by GEANT4 and first attempts to reconstruct tomographic images have been made using as method of reconstruction a back-projection standard algorithm. The proposed camera is based on slant collimators and LaBr3:Ce crystals. Within the Field of View (FOV) of the camera, it possible to distinguish point sources located in air at a distance of about 2 cm from each other. In particular conditions of uptake, tumor depth and dimension, the preliminary results show that the Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) values obtained are higher than the standard detection limit.

Future experiments in nuclear and particle physics are moving towards the high luminosity regime in order to access rare processes. In this framework, particle detectors require high rate capability together with excellent timing resolution for precise event reconstruction. In order to achieve this, the development of dedicated FrontEnd Electronics (FEE) for detectors has become increasingly challenging and expensive. Thus, a current trend in R&D is towards flexible FEE that can be easily adapted to a great variety of detectors, without impairing the required high performance. This thesis reports on a novel FEE for two different detector types: imaging Cherenkov counters and plastic scintillator arrays. The former requires high sensitivity and precision for detection of single photon signals, while the latter is characterized by slower and larger signals typical of scintillation processes. The FEE design was developed using high-bandwidth preamplifiers and fast discriminators which provide Time-over-Threshold (ToT). The use of discriminators allowed for low power consumption, minimal dead-times and self-triggering capabilities, all fundamental aspects for high rate applications. The output signals of the FEE are readout by a high precision TDC system based on FPGA. The performed full characterization of the analogue signals under realistic conditions proved that the ToT information can be used in a novel way for charge measurements or walk corrections, thus improving the obtainable timing resolution. Detailed laboratory investigations proved the feasibility of the ToT method. The full readout chain was investigated in test experiments at the Mainz Microtron: high counting rates per channel of several MHz were achieved, and a timing resolution of better than 100 ps after walk correction based on ToT was obtained. Ongoing applications to fast Time-of-Flight counters and future developments of FEE have been also recently investigated.
