Growth and Carcase Characters of Progeny from Caprine Feral Does Mated to Boer or Feral Bucks in Western Queensland

In recent years significant numbers of Australian goats have been harvested from the feral population to supply a strong demand for export of meat. In addition large numbers of feral does have been domesticated to increase breeding herds in western Queensland. Introduction of the Boer breed to Australia as a specialist meat goat may provide a genetic means for improving the productive performance of the Australian feral. The present paper reports growth and carcase attributes of feral and Boer x feral genotypes born in 1998 and birthweight of those born in 1999. A strong world demand and current firm prices for goat meat provides opportunities for some wool/beef production enterprises in western Queensland to increase farm viability through diversification. In particular, there is rising interest in the use of Boer goats to improve productive performance of the Australian feral goat. Pastoral graziers have noted the high prolificacy of feral goats grazed in semi-arid areas, but there is no information on the breeding ability of feral does mated to Boer bucks. Determination of the Tolman length in the improved Derjaguin-Broekhoff-de Boer theory for capillary condensation of ethanol in mesoporous thin films by ellipsometric porosimetry

Ethanol adsorption-desorption isotherms on well-organized mesoporous silica and titania films with hexagonal pores structure were studied by ellipsometric porosimetry. The mesopore volume Was calculated from the change of the effective refractive index at the end points of the isotherm. An improved Derjaguin-Broekhoff-de Boer (IDBdB) model for cylindrical pores is proposed for the determination of the pore size. In this model, the disjoining pressure isotherms were obtained by measuring the thickness of the ethanol film on a non-porous film with the same chemical composition. This approach eliminates uncertainties related to the application of the statistical film thickness determined via t-plots in previous versions of the DBdB model. The deviation in the surface tension of ethanol in the mesopores from that of a flat interface was described by the Tolman parameter in the Gibbs-Tolman-Koening-Buff equation. A positive value of the Tolman parameter of 0.2 nm was found from the fitting of the desorption branch of the isotherms to the experimental data obtained by Low Angle X-ray Diffraction (LA-XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) measurements in the range of pore diameters between 2.1 and 8.3 nm. Para obter o Grau de Mestre em Tradução e Interpretação Especializadas apresento este projecto de tradução do ensaio de Vincent Jouve “La Littérature selon Roland Barthes” e análise crítica das dificuldades tradutórias encontradas. Para a tradutora é uma actividade inovadora e aliciante. A selecção da obra reveste-se de argumentos tanto pessoais como profissionais sendo particularmente oportuna, pois coincide com o centenário de nascimento de Barthes. Roland Barthes é um autor rico, complexo e desconcertante que, embora pouco estudado à época, levanta emoções extremas: adorado por uns e detestado por outros. O ensaio de Vincent Jouve reflecte essa riqueza quer de forma quer de conteúdo. Participar na divulgação, mesmo que só académica, destes autores é muito gratificante. O ensaio literário tem características próprias, que o tornam semelhante a uma manifestação artística, privilegia-se o sentido traduzindo a obra sem recorrer a progamas de tradução. Este relatório é composto por três partes fundamentais: a preparação prévia, a tradução e a análise das dificuldades.
