From January 1988 to January 1989 all the heart transplant and bone marrow recipients at the Instituto do Coração of the Hospital das Clínicas of the University of São Paulo Medical School were studied for the incidence and morbidity associated with herpesviruses infections after transplantation. Five bone marrow and 5 heart transplant recipients were followed for a mean of 4.2 months post-transplantation. All the patients were seropositive for cytomegalovirus (CMV) before admission and 80% experienced one or more recurrences during the observation period. Of the 12 episodes of CMV infection, that were identified in this study, 83% were accompanied by clinical or laboratory abnormalities. However, there was only one case of severe disease. The overall incidence of infection for herpes simplex (HSV) was 50%. Although most of HSV reactivations were oral or genital, one case of HSV hepatitis occurred. One of the 6 episodes of HSV infections that were treated with acyclovir showed an unsatisfactory response and was successfully managed with ganciclovir. All the individuals had anti-varicella zoster virus antibodies, but none of them developed infection. The study emphasizes the importance of active diagnostic surveillance of herpesvirus infections in transplant patients. Both CMV and HSV reactivations showed high incidence and important morbidity and thus, deserve prophylactic therapy.

Purpose: Optimal induction and maintenance immunosuppressive therapies in renal transplantation are still a matter of debate.Chronic corticosteroid usage is a major cause of morbidity but steroid-free immunosuppression (SF) can result in unacceptably high rates of acute rejection and even graft loss. Methods and materials: We have conducted a prospective openlabelled clinical trial in the Geneva-Lausanne Transplant Network from March 2005 to May 2008. 20 low immunological risk (<20% PRA, no DSA) adult recipients of a primary kidney allograft received a 4-day course of thymoglobulin (1.5 mg/kg/d) with methylprednisolone and maintenance based immunosuppression of tacrolimus and entericcoated mycophenolic acid (MPA). The control arm consisted of 16 matched recipients treated with basiliximab induction, tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil and corticosteroids. Primary endpoints were the percentage of recipients not taking steroids and the percentage of rejection-free recipients at 12 months.Secondary end points were allograft survival at 12 months and significant thymoglobulin and/or other drugs side effects. Results: In the SF group, 85% of the kidney recipients remained steroid-free at 12 months. The 3 cases of steroids introduction were due to one acute tubulo-interstitial rejection occurring at day 11, one tacrolimus withdrawal due to thrombotic microangiopathy and one MPA withdrawal because of multiple sinusitis and CMV reactivations. No BK viremia was detected nor CMV disease. The 6 CMV negative patients who received a positive CMV allograft had a symptomatic primoinfection after their 6-month course valgancyclovir prophylaxis. In the steroid-based group, 3 acute rejection episodes (acute humoral rejection, acute tubulointerstitial Banff IA and vascular Banff IIA) occurred in 2 recipients, 3 BK virus nephropathies were diagnosed between 45 and 135 days post transplant No side effects were associated with thymoglobulin infusion. In the SF group, 4 recipients presented severe leukopenia or agranulocytosis and one recipient had febrile hepatitis leading to transient MPA withdrawal. Discontinuation of MPA was needed in 2 patients for recurrent sinusitis and CMV reactivations. Patient and graft survival was 100% in both groups at 12 month follow-up. Conclusion: Steroid-free with short-course thymoglobulin induction therapy was a safe protocol in low-risk renal transplant recipients. Lower rates of acute rejection and BK virus infections episodes were seen compared to the steroid-based control group. A longer follow-up will be needed to determine whether this SF immunosuppressive regimen will result in higher graft and patient survival.

The Monte Perdido thrust fault (southern Pyrenees) consists of a 6-m-thick interval of intensely deformed clay-bearing rocks. The fault zone is affected by a pervasive pressure solution seam and numerous shear surfaces. Calcite extensional-shear veins are present along the shear surfaces. The angular relationships between the two structures indicate that shear surfaces developed at a high angle (70°) to the local principal maximum stress axis r1. Two main stages of deformation are present. The first stage corresponds to the development of calcite shear veins by a combination of shear surface reactivation and extensional mode I rupture. The second stage of deformation corresponds to chlorite precipitation along the previously reactivated shear surfaces. The pore fluid factor k computed for the two deformation episodes indicates high fluid pressures during the Monte Perdido thrust activity. During the first stage of deformation, the reactivation of the shear surface was facilitated by a suprahydrostatic fluid pressure with a pore fluid factor kv equal to 0.89. For the second stage, the fluid pressure remained still high (with a k value ranging between 0.77 and 0.84) even with the presence of weak chlorite along the shear surfaces. Furthermore, evidence of hydrostatic fluid pressure during calcite cement precipitation supports that incremental shear surface reactivations are correlated with cyclic fluid pressure fluctuations consis- tent with a fault-valve model.

Thereis now growing evidencethatthe hippocampus generatestheta rhythmsthat can phase biasfast neural oscillationsinthe neocortex, allowing coordination of widespread fast oscillatory populations outside limbic areas. A recent magnetoencephalographic study showed that maintenance of configural-relational scene information in a delayed match-to-sample (DMS) task was associated with replay of that information during the delay period. The periodicity of the replay was coordinated by the phase of the ongoing theta rhythm, and the degree of theta coordination during the delay period was positively correlated with DMS performance. Here, we reanalyzed these data to investigate which brain regions were involved in generating the theta oscillations that coordinated the periodic replay of configural- relational information. We used a beamformer algorithm to produce estimates of regional theta rhythms and constructed volumetric images of the phase-locking between the local theta cycle and the instances of replay (in the 13- 80 Hz band). We found that individual differences in DMS performancefor configural-relational associations were relatedtothe degree of phase coupling of instances of cortical reactivations to theta oscillations generated in the right posterior hippocampus and the right inferior frontal gyrus. This demonstrates that the timing of memory reactivations in humans is biased toward hippocampal theta phase

The fission-track method (FTM) in apatite was applied to 45 samples collected in the Serra da Mantiqueira (Mantiqueira mountain range), the Serra do Mar (Mar mountain range), regions next to these mountain ranges and the coastal region between Ubatuba and Santos in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, to study the thermochronology of the South American Platform in southeast Brazil and its influence on Santos and Campos basins. The data presented in this work complement the previously presented data on the same region (Tello Saenz et al., 2003. J. S. Am. Earth Sci. 15, 765-774) with 31 new samples analyzed. The weighted mean of the corrected ages from high Mantiqueira (around 1000 m), (121 +/- 6) Ma, coincides with the South Atlantic opening. The fact that its thermal history starts at a relatively low temperature (similar to 80 degrees C) suggests that the age of similar to 120 Ma would be the formation age of Serra da Mantiqueira due to a rapid pulse, in which tracks had no time to be retained at the closure temperature, that is similar to 120 degrees C. The Serra do Mar presents a more complicated thermal history, with several reactivations indicated by the changes in the slope of its cooling curve. The thermal histories obtained in the regions next to these mountain ranges are compatible with the results mentioned above. The Santos Basin has unconformities that agree with changes in the slope thermal histories of the studied region. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The Camorim Oilfield, discovered in 1970 in the shallow water domain of the Sergipe Sub-basin, produces hydrocarbons from the Carmópolis Member of the Muribeca Formation, the main reservoir interval, interpreted as siliciclastics deposited in an alluvial-fluvial-deltaic context during a late rifting phase of Neoaptian age, in the Sergipe-Alagoas Basin. The structural setting of the field defines different production blocks, being associated to the evolution of the Atalaia High during the rift stage and subsequent reactivations, encompassing NE-SW trending major normal faults and NWEW trending secondary faults. The complexity of this field is related to the strong facies variation due to the interaction between continental and coastal depositional environments, coupled with strata juxtaposition along fault blocks. This study aims to geologically characterize its reservoirs, to provide new insights to well drilling locations in order to increase the recovery factor of the field. Facies analysis based on drill cores and geophysical logs and the 3D interpretation of a seismic volume, provide a high resolution stratigraphic analysis approach to be applied in this geodynamic transitional context between the rift and drift evolutionary stages of the basin. The objective was to define spatial and time relations between production zones and the preferential directions of fluid flow, using isochore maps that represent the external geometry of the deposits and facies distribution maps to characterize the internal heterogeneities of these intervals, identified in a 4th order stratigraphic zoning. This work methodology, integrated in a 3D geological modelling process, will help to optimize well drilling and hydrocarbons production. This methodology may be applied in other reservoirs in tectonic and depositional contexts similar to the one observed at Camorim, for example, the oil fields in the Aracaju High, Sergipe Sub-basin, which together represent the largest volume of oil in place in onshore Brazilian basins

The Precambrian crystalline basement of southeast Brazil is affected by many Phanerozoic reactivations of shear zones that developed during the end of the Neoproterozoic in the Brasiliano orogeny. These reactivations with specific tectonic events, a multidisciplinary study was done, involving geology, paleostress, and structural analysis of faults, associated with apatite fission track methods along the northeastern border of the Parana basin in southeast Brazil. The results show that the study area consists of three main tectonic domains, which record different episodes of uplift and reactivation of faults. These faults were brittle in character and resulted in multiple generations of fault products as pseudotachylytes and ultracataclasites, foliated cataclasites and fault gouges.Based on geological evidence and fission track data, an uplift of basement rocks and related tectonic subsidence with consequent deposition in the Parana basin were modeled. The reactivations of the basement record successive uplift events during the Phanerozoic dated via corrected fission track ages, at 387 +/- 50 Ma (Ordovician); 193 +/- 19 Ma (Triassic); 142 +/- 18 Ma (Jurassic), 126 +/- 11 Ma (Early Cretaceous); 89 +/- 10 Ma (Late Cretaceous) and 69 +/- 10 Ma (Late Cretaceous). These results indicate differential uplift of tectonic domains of basement units, probably related to Parana basin subsidence. Six major sedimentary units (supersequences) that have been deposited with their bounding unconformities, seem to have a close relationship with the orogenic events during the evolution of southwestern Gondwana. The Neoproterozoic granitogenesis related to the Central Mantiqueira Province comprise the calc alkaline to alkaline granitoid complexes of Sorocaba, San Francisco, São Roque, Ibiúna and Piedade. These complexes occur in a ruptil tectonic to tardi (Sn+3) event. The emplacement of the different facies in transtractives structures of the pull-apart type are characterized in the area by the main transcurrent shear zones of Taxaquara-Pirapora, Itu-Jundiuvira, Moreiras, Cangüera and Caucáia of ENE-WSW general direction. The massifs present complex internal architecture characterized by intrusions in restrict initial phase of intermediate equigranular nature. Also present a main phase of porfiroid monzo and sienogranite that fragments the previous phase, followed by lateral accretion of equi to inequigranular material, and in some cases by the accretion of late phases of circular bodies of porfiroid rapakivi granites, and a late to final phase of aplitic to pegmatitic composition. This magmatism grew with the intrusions of successive magmatic pulses, partially controlled by many reactivations of the shear zones. The REE also suggest that the magmatic phases are similar, synchronous and repetitive in four of the complexes in both domains, present in the São Francisco Complex. The crystallization starts from accretion processes, but compositionally quite different from the others. The variation in compositions and ages (TDM) for these granites reflect the derivation from different sources developed under different magmatic conditions, followed by processes of contamination that frequently occur in the crust.
