The effect of tensile prestrain on fatigue crack propagation behaviour of commercial mild steel with significant amount of stringer inclusions has been studied. In prestrained materials the usual stable stage II crack growth region is preceded by a phase wherein a retardation in crack growth rate occurs. No such behaviour is observed in annealed material. The amount of retardation is found to increase with increase in prestrain. A mechanism for the observed retardation in crack growth rate is also presented.

The basic method of JIc calculation using a single specimen is discussed. Dokouipil's approach for evaluating the JIc value is extended further and the effect of prestrain on rolled mild steel with significant inclusions is studied using this modified approach. Although this method does not give an accurate value of JIc, it is quite effective for a comparative study. While the fracture toughness of annealed and 7% prestrained materials are about the same, the fracture toughness of 3% prestrained material is significantly lower.

The scope of this study was to examine the effects of plane strain prestrain, induced via cold-rolling, and subsequent automotive paint bake hardening cycle on both tensile and fatigue properties of a hot rolled TRIP780 multiphase steel. Strain-life data has been generated for as-received (0% prestrain), 10% and 20% prestrained samples, in both baked and unbaked conditions. Cold rolling  increased the number of strain reversals to failure at high cyclic strain amplitudes with no effect at low strain amplitudes. Bake hardening increased the number of reversals to failure at high cyclic strain amplitudes. The prestrained material exhibited partial cyclic softening, with some residual strength increase. The residual strength increase was attributed to the austenite to martensite transformation that occurred during the prestraining process.

Paint baking treatment was carried out in a silicon oil bath at 170 °C for 20 min for Si-Al-Mn TRIP Steel sheet with different prestrains, and effect of prestrain on microstructures and properties was studied before and after baking. The results show that with the increasing of prestrain amount during prestraining and baking, the volume fraction of retained austenite decreases, and the volume fraction of martensite and bainite increases as well as yield strength increases; as prestrain ranges from 0 to 4%, the baking-hardening (BH) value increases; while the prestrain ranges from 4% to 16%, the BH value decreases; when the prestrain amount is 4%, the highest BH value is about 70 MPa for Si-Al-Mn TRIP steel sheet with niobium, which displays excellent baking-hardening behavior.

The fatigue-crack propagation and threshold behaviour of a C-Mn steel containing boron has been investigated at a range of strength levels suitable for mining chain applications. The heat-treatment variables examined include two austenitizing temperatures (900 degree C and 1250 degree C) and a range of tempering treatments from the as-quenched condition to tempering at 400 degree C. In mining applications the haulage chains undergo a 'calibration' process which has the effect of imposing a tensile prestrain on the chain links before they go into service. Prestrain is shown to reduce threshold values in these steels and this behaviour is related to its effects on the residual stress distribution in the test specimens.

The byssus threads of the common mussel, Mytilus edulis L., have been tested mechanically and the results from the tests related to the ecology of the animal. The threads are mechanically similar to other crystalline polymers such as polyethylene having a modulus of about 108N m−2 and a long relaxation time. Resilience of 60% is similar to tendon; ultimate strain is about five times that of tendon at 0.44. The thread is laid down with a prestrain of 10% and so guys the mussel in position. Calculation shows that a mussel with 50 byssus threads would be able to resist all but severe winter storms.

The displacement between the ridges situated outside the filleted test section of an axially loaded unnotched specimen is computed from the axial load and shape of the specimen and compared with extensometer deflection data obtained from experiments. The effect of prestrain on the extensometer deflection versus specimen strain curve has been studied experimentally and analytically. An analytical study shows that an increase in the slope of the stress-strain curve in the inelastic region increases the slope of the corresponding computed extensometer deflection versus specimen strain curve. A mathematical model has been developed which uses a modified length ¯ℓef in place of the actual length of the uniform diameter test section of the specimen. This model predicts the extensometer deflection within 5% of the corresponding experimental value. This method has been successfully used by the authors to evolve an iterative procedure for predicting the cyclic specimen strain in axial fatigue tests on unnotched specimens.

Porous Ti-50.5at.%Ni shape memory alloy (SMA) samples with a range of  porosities were prepared by spacer sintering. The porous structure of the alloy was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The phase constituents of the porous TiNi alloy were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The shape memory behavior of the porous TiNi alloy was investigated using loading–unloading compression tests. Results indicate that the porous TiNi alloy exhibits superelasticity and the recoverable strain by the superelasticity decreases with the increase of porosity. After a prestrain of 7%, the superelastically recovered strains for the porous TiNi alloy samples with porosities of 46%, 59%, 69% and 77% are 2.0%, 1.8%, 1.5% and 1.3%, respectively. The pores in the TiNi alloy samples cause stress/strain concentration, as well as crack initiation, which adversely affect the shape memory behavior of the porous TiNi alloy.

This research deals with processes leading to local strengthening effects in hot-rolled dual-phase (DP) steels. For this purpose, a method was investigated to achieve local strengthening, namely, local laser heat treatment (LHT). DP sheet steels were globally and homogenously deformed with different degrees of prestrains by cold rolling and subsequently locally heat treated by laser. Following this treatment with selected parameters, the microstructure of the surface and cross section of the heat-treated area as well as the mechanical properties were evaluated by light optical microscopy (LOM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), as well as transmission electron microscopy (TEM), hardness measurement, and tensile testing. It can be stated that with partial heat treatment, local high strengthening can be produced. At lower heat treating temperatures, this effect could be attributed to bake hardening (BH). Increasing the prestrain as well as temperature results in improving the local properties. With increased heat treating temperature, the initial microstructure near the surface is affected. Partial strengthening of DP steels by laser can open up new fields of application for locally using the strengthening effect to only influence relevant areas of interest, thus providing the potential for saving energy and designed the component's behavior.

Currently, there is a significant effort into developing novel multiphase microstructures to further improve the strength/ductility combination of advanced high-strength steels. To achieve this, the effect of the microstructure on sheet formability needs to be further understood. In this study, the effect of the microstructure on the variation of the elastic modulus in loading and unloading of DP 780 steel has been investigated. Five microstructures with varying volume fractions of ferrite and martensite were generated using different heat treatment cycles. Tension tests were performed to different strain values and the Young’s Modulus during loading and unloading was determined. The test results show that the reduction in unloading modulus with prestrain depends on the volume fraction and hardness of the martensitic phase.

Magnox AL80 has been used for a study of creep crack propagation. A number of variables have been considered such as specimen geometry, notch root radius, material thickness, creep prestrain and stress level. The work has covered the material behaving under two values of the creep exponent, n=3.5 and n=7, according to the stress level. As well as observing initiation times and crack growth rates, scribed grids have been used to examine the near crack tip strain levels and distributions. It was shown that estimations of COD from notch flank opening can give misleading indications of material behaviour and that a more informative method was to monitor displacements in the material surrounding the crack tip. Strong evidence was found for crack advance being displacement controlled, however it was shown that the COD approach should be considered geometry dependant. The summation of ∈xx and ∈yy provided the most successful description of crack advance as it produced a single value that described propagation in all the cases concidered. The strain distributions indicates that σyy was related to distance from a point ahead of the crack tip by the exponent - (l/n+l) and that σxx is proportional to σyy. The constraint stresses arising in the DEN and CN specimens were evaluated. Initiation time was found to be principally affected by the stress level but was modified by the constraints arising from specimen geometry. Crack growth was found not to obey either the empirical K or σpett relationships but was reviewed in context of the observed strain behaviour.
