The impact of power fluctuations arising from fixed-speed wind turbines on the magnitude and frequency of inter-area oscillations has been investigated. The authors introduced data acquisition equipment to record the power flow on the interconnector between the Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland systems. Through monitoring the interconnector oscillation using a fast Fourier transform, it was possible to determine the magnitude and frequency of the inter-area oscillation between the two systems. The impact of tower shadow on the output power from a wind farm was analysed using data recorded on site. A case study investigates the effect on the system of the removal of a large fixed-speed wind farm. Conclusions are drawn on the impact that conventional generation and the output from fixed-speed wind farms have on the stability of the Irish power system.

In this work it is proposed to validate an evolutionary tuning algorithm in plants composed by a grid connected inverter. The optimization aims the tuning of the slopes of P-Ω and Q-V curves so that the system is stable, damped and minimum settling time. Simulation and experimental results are presented to prove the feasibility of the proposed approach. However, experimental results demonstrate a compromising effect of grid frequency oscillations in the active power transferring. In addition, it was proposed an additional loop to compensate this effect ensuring a constant active power flow. © 2011 IEEE.

To ensure the small-signal stability of a power system, power system stabilizers (PSSs) are extensively applied for damping low frequency power oscillations through modulating the excitation supplied to synchronous machines, and increasing interest has been focused on developing different PSS schemes to tackle the threat of damping oscillations to power system stability. This paper examines four different PSS models and investigates their performances on damping power system dynamics using both small-signal eigenvalue analysis and large-signal dynamic simulations. The four kinds of PSSs examined include the Conventional PSS (CPSS), Single Neuron based PSS (SNPSS), Adaptive PSS (APSS) and Multi-band PSS (MBPSS). A steep descent parameter optimization algorithm is employed to seek the optimal PSS design parameters. To evaluate the effects of these PSSs on improving power system dynamic behaviors, case studies are carried out on an 8-unit 24-bus power system through both small-signal eigenvalue analysis and large-signal time-domain simulations.

This paper presents an efficient algorithm for multi-objective distribution feeder reconfiguration based on Modified Honey Bee Mating Optimization (MHBMO) approach. The main objective of the Distribution feeder reconfiguration (DFR) is to minimize the real power loss, deviation of the nodes’ voltage. Because of the fact that the objectives are different and no commensurable, it is difficult to solve the problem by conventional approaches that may optimize a single objective. So the metahuristic algorithm has been applied to this problem. This paper describes the full algorithm to Objective functions paid, The results of simulations on a 32 bus distribution system is given and shown high accuracy and optimize the proposed algorithm in power loss minimization.

FACTS controllers are emerging as viable and economic solutions to the problems of large interconnected ne networks, which can endanger the system security. These devices are characterized by their fast response, absence of inertia, and minimum maintenance requirements. Thyristor controlled equipment like Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor (TCSC), Static Var Compensator (SVC), Thyristor Controlled Phase angle Regulator (TCPR) etc. which involve passive elements result in devices of large sizes with substantial cost and significant labour for installation. An all solid-state device using GTOs leads to reduction in equipment size and has improved performance. The Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) is a versatile controller which can be used to control the active and reactive power in the Line independently. The concept of UPFC makes it possible to handle practically all power flow control and transmission line compensation problems, using solid-state controllers, which provide functional flexibility, generally not attainable by conventional thyristor controlled systems. In this paper, we present the development of a control scheme for the series injected voltage of the UPFC to damp the power oscillations and improve transient stability in a power system. The present trend in the industry is towards the use of power transistors in the development of efficient Pulsewidth Modulated (PWM) inverters, because of their operation at high frequency, simplicity of turn-off, and low commutation losses compared to the technology using thyristors. But the protection of power transistors, minimization of switching power loss, and design of base drive circuit are very important for a reliable operation of the system. The requirements, analysis, and a simplified procedure for calculation of the switching-aid network components are presented. The transistor is protected against short circuit using a modified autoregulated and autoprotection drive circuit. The experimental results show that the switching power loss and voltage stress in the device can be reduced by suitable choice of the switching-aid network component values.

This paper proposes an approach of optimal sensitivity applied in the tertiary loop of the automatic generation control. The approach is based on the theorem of non-linear perturbation. From an optimal operation point obtained by an optimal power flow a new optimal operation point is directly determined after a perturbation, i.e., without the necessity of an iterative process. This new optimal operation point satisfies the constraints of the problem for small perturbation in the loads. The participation factors and the voltage set point of the automatic voltage regulators (AVR) of the generators are determined by the technique of optimal sensitivity, considering the effects of the active power losses minimization and the network constraints. The participation factors and voltage set point of the generators are supplied directly to a computational program of dynamic simulation of the automatic generation control, named by power sensitivity mode. Test results are presented to show the good performance of this approach. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Scan circuit generally causes excessive switching activity compared to normal circuit operation. The higher switching activity in turn causes higher peak power supply current which results into supply, voltage droop and eventually yield loss. This paper proposes an efficient methodology for test vector re-ordering to achieve minimum peak power supported by the given test vector set. The proposed methodology also minimizes average power under the minimum peak power constraint. A methodology to further reduce the peak power below the minimum supported peak power, by inclusion of minimum additional vectors is also discussed. The paper defines the lower bound on peak power for a given test set. The results on several benchmarks shows that it can reduce peak power by up to 27%.

Rate-constrained power minimization (PMIN) over a code division multiple-access (CDMA) channel with correlated noise is studied. PMIN is. shown to be an instance of a separable convex optimization problem subject to linear ascending constraints. PMIN is further reduced to a dual problem of sum-rate maximization (RMAX). The results highlight the underlying unity between PMIN, RMAX, and a problem closely related to PMIN but with linear receiver constraints. Subsequently, conceptually simple sequence design algorithms are proposed to explicitly identify an assignment of sequences and powers that solve PMIN. The algorithms yield an upper bound of 2N - 1 on the number of distinct sequences where N is the processing gain. The sequences generated using the proposed algorithms are in general real-valued. If a rate-splitting and multi-dimensional CDMA approach is allowed, the upper bound reduces to N distinct sequences, in which case the sequences can form an orthogonal set and be binary +/- 1-valued.

This paper presents a physical explanation of the phenomenon of low frequency oscillations experienced in power systems. A brief account of the present practice of providing fixed gain power system stabilizers (PSS) is followed by a summary of some of the recent design proposals for adaptive PSS. A novel PSS based on the effort of cancelling the negative damping torque produced by the automatic voltage regulator (AVR) is presented along with some recent studies on a multimachine system using a frequency identification technique.
