Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) is a chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbon that was widely used for seed dressing in prevention of fungal growth on crops, and also as a component of fireworks, ammunition, and synthetic rubbers. Because of its resistance to degradation and mobility, HCB is widely distributed throughout the environment and is accumulated through food chains in different ecosystems. In this study, a preliminary investigation was carried out on the bioaccumulation and the toxic effects of HCB in the microbial (protozoan in particular) communities in the Fuhe River, Wuhan, a water body receiving industrial wastewaters containing HCB and other pollutants, using the standardized polyurethane foam units (PFU) method. Field samples were taken from eight stations established along the Fuhe River in January and August 2006. The concentration ratios of HCB in microbial communities and in water were 9.66-18.64, and the microbial communities accumulated 13.29-56.88 mu g/L of HCB in January and 0.82-10.25 mu g/L HCB in August. Correlation analysis showed a negative correlation between the HCB contents in the microbial assemblage, and the number of species and the diversity index of the protozoan communities. This study demonstrated the applicability of the PFU method in monitoring the effects of HCB on the level of microbial communities.

Smoldering constitutes a significant fire risk both in normal gravity and in microgravity. This space experiment has been conducted aboard the China Recoverable Satellite SJ-8 to investigate smoldering characteristics of flexible polyurethane foam with central ignition in a forced flow of oxidizer. This configuration resulted in a combination of opposed and forward flow smolder. The microgravity experiment is rather unique in that it was performed at constant pressure, and with a relatively high ambient oxygen concentration (35% by volume). The smoldering characteristics are inferred from measurements of temperature histories at several locations along the foam sample. Particularly important is the discovery that there is a transition from smoldering to flaming near the sample end in the opposed smoldering. This transition seems to be caused by strong acceleration of the smoldering reaction. The observed transition serves to initiate a vigorous forward-propagating oxidation reaction in the char left behind by the smoldering reaction. The secondary char oxidation reaction propagates through the sample and consumes most of the remaining char. In forward flow smoldering, the oxidizer depletion by the upstream opposed smolder prevents an exothermic oxidation reaction from being established in the foam until this preceding reaction is completed. Once fresh oxidizer flows in the sample, the existing conditions are sufficient for a self-sustained forward smoldering reaction to take place.

Combined with the national standard biomonitoring method (polyurethane foam units method), calorimetry was applied to study the metabolic activities of PFU microbial communities in fresh water to determine the effects of anthropotgenic stresses on the activity of the microbial community. Comparisons were made at four sampling stations with different eutrophic status in Lake Donghu. Water quality variables, species number of protozoa, abundances of microorganisms, biomass, heterotrophy indexes and diversity indexes are reported. The heat rate-time curves of the native and concentrated PFU microbial communities were determined at 28 degrees C. Growth rate, measured maximum power output and total heat were calculated from the heat rate-time curves. The values of metabolic variables are higher at the more eutrophic stations, which suggests that organic pollution increases the activity of PFU microbial communities. The metabolic variables are in good agreement with chemical and biotic variables. And calorimetry will be useful for biomonitoring of the PFU microbial community. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V. The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae was immobilized in cubes of polyurethane foam and the ability of this immobilized material to separate Sb(III) and Sb(V) was investigated. A method based on sequential determination of total Sb (after on-line reduction of Sb(V) to Sb(III) with thiourea) and Sb(Ill) (after on-line solid-liquid phase extraction) by hydride generation inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry is proposed. A flow system assembled with solenoid valves was used to manage all stages of the process. The effects of pH, sample loading and elution flow rates on solid-liquid phase extraction of Sb(III) were evaluated. Also, the parameters related to online pre-reduction (reaction coil and flow rates) were optimized. Detection limits of 0.8 and 0.15 mu g L-1 were obtained for total Sb and Sb (III), respectively. The proposed method was applied to the analysis of river water and effluent samples. The results obtained for the determination of total Sb were in agreement with expected values, including the river water Standard Reference Material 1640 certified by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Recoveries of Sb(III) and Sb(V) in spiked samples were between 81 19 and I I I 15% when 120 s of sample loading were used. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The objective of the present study is to develop fully renewable and environmentally benign techniques for improving the fire safety of flexible polyurethane foams (PUFs). A multilayered coating made from cationic chitosan (CS) and anionic alginate (AL) was deposited on PUFs through layer-by-layer assembly. This coating system exhibits a slight influence on the thermal stability of PUF, but significantly improves the char formation during combustion. Cone calorimetry reveals that 10 CS-AL bilayers (only 5.7% of the foams weight) lead to a 66% and 11% reduction in peak heat release rate and total heat release, respectively, compared with those of the uncoated control. The notable decreased fire hazards of PUF are attributed to the CS-AL coatings being beneficial to form an insulating protective layer on the surface of burning materials that inhibits the oxygen and heat permeation and slows down the flammable gases in the vapor phase, and thereby improves the flame resistance. This water-based, environmentally benign natural coating will stimulate further efforts in improving fire safety for a variety of polymer substrates.

The thermal degradation of flexible polyurethane foam has been studied under different conditions by thermogravimetric analysis (TG), thermogravimetric analysis-infrared spectrometry (TG-IR) and thermogravimetric analysis-mass spectrometry (TG-MS). For the kinetic study, dynamic and dynamic+isothermal runs were performed at different heating rates (5, 10 and 20 °C min−1) in three different atmospheres (N2, N2:O2 4:1 and N2:O2 9:1). Two reaction models were obtained, one for the pyrolysis and another for the combustion degradation (N2:O2 4:1 and N2:O2 9:1), simultaneously correlating the experimental data from the dynamic and dynamic+isothermal runs at different heating rates. The pyrolytic model considered consisted of two consecutive reactions with activation energies of 142 and 217.5 kJ mol−1 and reaction orders of 0.805 and 1.246. Nevertheless, to simulate the experimental data from the combustion runs, three consecutive reactions were employed with activation energies of 237.9, 103.5 and 120.1 kJ mol−1, and reaction orders of 2.003, 0.778 and 1.025. From the characterization of the sample employing TG-IR and TG-MS, the results obtained showed that the FPUF, under an inert atmosphere, started the decomposition breaking the urethane bond to produce long chains of ethers which were degraded immediately in the next step. However, under an oxidative atmosphere, at the first step not only the urethane bonds were broken but also some ether polyols started their degradation which finished at the second step producing a char that was degraded at the last stage.

Thermal decomposition of flexible polyurethane foam (FPUF) was studied under nitrogen and air atmospheres at 550 °C and 850 °C using a laboratory scale reactor to analyse the evolved products. Ammonia, hydrogen cyanide and nitrile compounds were obtained in high yields in pyrolysis at the lower temperature, whereas at 850 °C polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and other semivolatile compounds, especially compounds containing nitrogen (benzonitrile, aniline, quinolone and indene) were the most abundant products. Different behaviour was observed in the evolution of polychlorodibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs) at 550 °C and 850 °C. At 550 °C, the less chlorinated congeners, mainly PCDF, were more abundant. Contrarily, at 850 °C the most chlorinated PCDD were dominant. In addition, the total yields of PCDD/Fs in the pyrolysis and combustion runs at 850 °C were low and quite similar.
