Organic and acquisitive employment growth : re-examining,testing and extending Penrose's Growth Theory.

Edith Penrose’s theory of firm growth postulates that a firm’s current growth rate will be influenced by the adjustment costs of, and changes to a firm’s productive opportunity set arising from, previous growth. Although she explicitly considered the impact of previous organic growth on current organic growth, she was largely silent about the impact of previous acquisitive growth. In this paper we extend Penrose’s work to examine that the relative impact of organic and acquisitive growth on the adjustment costs and productive opportunity set of the firm. Employing a panel of commercially active enterprises in Sweden over a 10 year period our results suggest the following. First, previous organic growth acts as a constraint on current organic growth. Second, previous acquisitive growth has a positive effect on current organic growth. We conclude that organic growth and acquisitive growth constitute two distinct strategic options facing the firm, which have a differential impact on the future organic growth of the firm.

Optimal iterative schemes for computing the Moore-Penrose matrix inverse

Among the iterative schemes for computing the Moore — Penrose inverse of a woll-conditioned matrix, only those which have an order of convergence three or two are computationally efficient. A Fortran programme for these schemes is provided.

La cruauté au féminin : mythes et sacrifice dans La Comtesse sanglante de Valentine Penrose

Résumé Ce mémoire consiste en une étude de la transgression en ce qui a trait au lieu, au personnage et aux sacrifices dans La Comtesse sanglante (1962) de Valentine Penrose, une auteure et artiste qui a fait partie du mouvement surréaliste dès 1926. À partir de l’idée directrice du sacrifice et du sacré, nous exposons, dans un premier temps, l’état transgressif de la criminelle historique Erzsébet Báthory, présentée dans le récit comme une beauté fixe masquant une âme monstrueuse. Dans un deuxième temps, nous examinons la cruauté et la théâtralité des sacrifices pulsionnels qui servent la propre déification de la protagoniste. Partant de la théorie de la transgression de Foucault de laquelle nous dégageons l’idée du seuil, le premier chapitre présente la marginalité de l’univers de la meurtrière présenté comme une extension de son corps, du château en tant que structure froide et vide à l’intérieur. Dans le deuxième chapitre, nous mettons en corrélation la violence et le sacré en rapport, d’une part, aux mises en scène sacrificielles et au rôle de chaque femme participant aux sacrifices, et d’autre part, à la progression de la cruauté dans le récit. Dans le troisième chapitre sont explorés le phénomène de la rumeur et la filiation mythique du personnage par la réécriture de deux figures monstrueuses : la Méduse et Lilith. Par ces analyses, ce mémoire a pour but de faire connaître davantage l’auteure et de dégager la singularité de la comtesse Báthory dépeinte par Penrose comme l’archétype de la transgression au féminin.

GHP: a maple package for performing calculations in the Geroch-Held-Penrose formalism

We present a new symbolic algebra package, written for Maple, for performing computations in the Geroch-Held-Penrose formalism. We demonstrate the essential features and capabilities of our package by investigating Petrov-D vacuum solutions of Einstein's field equations.

A generalization of the Moore-Penrose inverse related to matrix subspaces of C(nxm)

[EN]A natural generalization of the classical Moore-Penrose inverse is presented. The so-called S-Moore-Penrose inverse of a m x n complex matrix A, denoted by As, is defined for any linear subspace S of the matrix vector space Cnxm. The S-Moore-Penrose inverse As is characterized using either the singular value decomposition or (for the nonsingular square case) the orthogonal complements with respect to the Frobenius inner product. These results are applied to the preconditioning of linear systems based on Frobenius norm minimization and to the linearly constrained linear least squares problem.

Massima estensione della soluzione di Schwarzschild e diagrammi di Penrose

Il punto di partenza dell'elaborato riguarda il modo in cui si giunge, a partire dalla relatività ristretta, a quella generale. Quest'ultima viene poi identificata come una teoria della gravitazione in cui si ottengono le equazioni di campo. Da qui si discute la soluzione delle equazioni di Einstein trovata da Schwarzschild evidenziandone i limiti. Si procede alla estensione di questa soluzione introducendo dapprima le coordinate di Eddington-Finkelstein e poi l'estensione massima data da Kruskal. Infine viene mostrato come è possibile compattificare l'infinito spaziotempo in una regione finita senza alterare la struttura causale. Questo viene fatto tramite delle trasformazioni particolari: le trasformazioni conformi. I diagrammi spaziotemporali che si ottengono dopo la compattificazione conforme sono conosciuti come i digrammi di Penrose e qui si vede come ottenere quelli dello spaziotempo di Minkowski e quelli dello spaziotempo della soluzione di Schwarzschild.

New perspectives on forbidden symmetries, quasicrystals, and Penrose tilings

Quasicrystals are solids with quasiperiodic atomic structures and symmetries forbidden to ordinary periodic crystals—e.g., 5-fold symmetry axes. A powerful model for understanding their structure and properties has been the two-dimensional Penrose tiling. Recently discovered properties of Penrose tilings suggest a simple picture of the structure of quasicrystals and shed new light on why they form. The results show that quasicrystals can be constructed from a single repeating cluster of atoms and that the rigid matching rules of Penrose tilings can be replaced by more physically plausible cluster energetics. The new concepts make the conditions for forming quasicrystals appear to be closely related to the conditions for forming periodic crystals.
