In this paper, the problem of finite-time stability of linear nonautonomous systems with time-varying delays is considered. Using a novel approach based on some techniques developed for linear positive systems, we derive new explicit conditions in terms of matrix inequalities ensuring that the state trajectories of the system do not exceed a certain threshold over a pre-specified finite time interval. These conditions are shown to be relaxed for the Lyapunov asymptotic stability. A numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the obtained result.

In this study, we proposed an adaptive fuzzy multi-surface sliding control (AFMSSC) for trajectory tracking of 6 degrees of freedom inertia coupled aerial vehicles with multiple inputs and multiple outputs (MIMO). It is shown that an adaptive fuzzy logic-based function approximator can be used to estimate the system uncertainties and an iterative multi-surface sliding control design can be carried out to control flight. Using AFMSSC on MIMO autonomous flight systems creates confluent control that can account for both matched and mismatched uncertainties, system disturbances and excitation in internal dynamics. It is proved that the AFMSSC system guarantees asymptotic output tracking and ultimate uniform boundedness of the tracking error. Simulation results are presented to validate the analysis.

This research presents a systematic procedure to obtain estimates, via extended Lyapunov functions, of attracting sets of a class of nonlinear systems, as well as an estimate of their stability regions. The considered class of nonlinear systems, called in this note the extended Lurie system, consists of nonlinear systems like those of the Lurie problem where one of the nonlinear functions can violate the sector conditions of the Lurie problem around the origin. In case of nonautonomous systems the concept of absolute stability is extended and uniform estimates of the attracting set are obtained. Two classical nonlinear systems, the forced duffing equation and the Van der Pol system, are analyzed with the proposed procedure.

Dynamic neural networks (DNNs), which are also known as recurrent neural networks, are often used for nonlinear system identification. The main contribution of this letter is the introduction of an efficient parameterization of a class of DNNs. Having to adjust less parameters simplifies the training problem and leads to more parsimonious models. The parameterization is based on approximation theory dealing with the ability of a class of DNNs to approximate finite trajectories of nonautonomous systems. The use of the proposed parameterization is illustrated through a numerical example, using data from a nonlinear model of a magnetic levitation system.

In this paper, a novel approach to Petri net modeling of programmable logic controller (PLC) programs is presented. The modeling approach is a simple extension of elementary net systems, and a graphical design tool that supports the use of this modeling approach is provided. A key characteristic of the model is that the binary sensory inputs and binary actuation outputs of the PLC are explicitly represented. This leads to the following two improvements: outputs are unambiguous, and interaction patterns are more clearly represented in the graphical form. The use of this modeling approach produces programs that are simple, lightweight, and portable. The approach is demonstrated by applying it to the development of a control module for a MonTech Positioning Station. © 2008 IEEE.

In this series of papers, we study issues related to the synchronization of two coupled chaotic discrete systems arising from secured communication. The first part deals with uniform dissipativeness with respect to parameter variation via the Liapunov direct method. We obtain uniform estimates of the global attractor for a general discrete nonautonomous system, that yields a uniform invariance principle in the autonomous case. The Liapunov function is allowed to have positive derivative along solutions of the system inside a bounded set, and this reduces substantially the difficulty of constructing a Liapunov function for a given system. In particular, we develop an approach that incorporates the classical Lagrange multiplier into the Liapunov function method to naturally extend those Liapunov functions from continuous dynamical system to their discretizations, so that the corresponding uniform dispativeness results are valid when the step size of the discretization is small. Applications to the discretized Lorenz system and the discretization of a time-periodic chaotic system are given to illustrate the general results. We also show how to obtain uniform estimation of attractors for parametrized linear stable systems with nonlinear perturbation.

We define nonautonomous graphs as a class of dynamic graphs in discrete time whose time-dependence consists in connecting or disconnecting edges. We study periodic paths in these graphs, and the associated zeta functions. Based on the analytic properties of these zeta functions we obtain explicit formulae for the number of n-periodic paths, as the sum of the nth powers of some specific algebraic numbers.

We study an one-dimensional nonlinear reaction-diffusion system coupled on the boundary. Such system comes from modeling problems of temperature distribution on two bars of same length, jointed together, with different diffusion coefficients. We prove the transversality property of unstable and stable manifolds assuming all equilibrium points are hyperbolic. To this end, we write the system as an equation with noncontinuous diffusion coefficient. We then study the nonincreasing property of the number of zeros of a linearized nonautonomous equation as well as the Sturm-Liouville properties of the solutions of a linear elliptic problem. This work is divided in two parts. In the first part we develop the theory of discrete nonautonomous dynamical systems. In particular, we investigate skew-product dynamical system, periodicity, stability, center manifold, and bifurcation. In the second part we present some concrete models that are used in ecology/biology and economics. In addition to developing the mathematical theory of these models, we use simulations to construct graphs that illustrate and describe the dynamics of the models. One of the main contributions of this dissertation is the study of the stability of some concrete nonlinear maps using the center manifold theory. Moreover, the second contribution is the study of bifurcation, and in particular the construction of bifurcation diagrams in the parameter space of the autonomous Ricker competition model. Since the dynamics of the Ricker competition model is similar to the logistic competition model, we believe that there exists a certain class of two-dimensional maps with which we can generalize our results. Finally, using the Brouwer’s fixed point theorem and the construction of a compact invariant and convex subset of the space, we present a proof of the existence of a positive periodic solution of the nonautonomous Ricker competition model.

In this paper we consider nonautonomous optimal control problems of infinite horizon type, whose control actions are given by L-1-functions. We verify that the value function is locally Lipschitz. The equivalence between dynamic programming inequalities and Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) inequalities for proximal sub (super) gradients is proven. Using this result we show that the value function is a Dini solution of the HJB equation. We obtain a verification result for the class of Dini sub-solutions of the HJB equation and also prove a minimax property of the value function with respect to the sets of Dini semi-solutions of the HJB equation. We introduce the concept of viscosity solutions of the HJB equation in infinite horizon and prove the equivalence between this and the concept of Dini solutions. In the Appendix we provide an existence theorem. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work we consider the dynamic consequences of the existence of infinite heteroclinic cycle in planar polynomial vector fields, which is a trajectory connecting two saddle points at infinity. It is stated that, although the saddles which form the cycle belong to infinity, for certain types of nonautonomous perturbations the perturbed system may present a complex dynamic behavior of the solutions in a finite part of the phase plane, due to the existence of tangencies and transversal intersections of their stable and unstable manifolds. This phenomenon might be called the chaos arising from infinity. The global study at infinity is made via the Poincare Compactification and the argument used to prove the statement is the Birkhoff-Smale Theorem. (c) 2004 WILEY-NCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
