In this paper we give some ideas that can be useful to solve Schrödinger equations in the case when the Hamiltonian contains a large term. We obtain an expansion of the solution in reciprocal powers of the large coupling constant. The procedure followed consists in considering that the small part of the Hamiltonian engenders a motion adiabatic to the motion generated by the large part of the same.

Let omega be a factor state on the quasilocal algebra A of observables generated by a relativistic quantum field, which, in addition, satisfies certain regularity conditions [satisfied by ground states and the recently constructed thermal states of the P(phi)(2) theory]. We prove that there exist space- and time-translation invariant states, some of which are arbitrarily close to omega in the weak * topology, for which the time evolution is weakly asymptotically Abelian. We study the order parameter for mixed-symmetry states involving a major d(x2-y2) state and various minor s-wave states (s, s(xy), and Sx2+y2) for different filling and temperature for mixing angles 0 and pi /2. We employ a two-dimensional tight-binding model incorporating second-neighbor hopping for tetragonal and orthorhombic lattice. There is mixing for the symmetric s state both on tetragonal and orthorhombic lattice. The s(xy) state mixes with the d(x2-y2) state only on orthorhombic lattice. The s(x2+y2) state never mixes with the d(x2-y2) state. The temperature dependence of the order parameters is also studied. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

We investigate the solution of the gap equation for mixed order parameter symmetry states as a function of filling using a two-dimensional tight-binding model incorporating second-neighbor hopping for tetragonal and orthorhombic lattice, the principal (major) component of the order parameter is taken to be of the d(x2-y2) type, As suggested in several investigations the minor component of the order parameter is taken to be of the d(xy) type. Both the permissible mixing angles 0 and pi/2 between the two components are considered. As a function of filling pronounced maxima of d(x2-y2) order parameter is accompanied by minima of the d(xy) order parameter. At fixed filling. The temperature dependence of the two components of the order parameter is also studied in all cases. The variation of critical temperature T, with filling is also studied and T-c is found to increase with second-neighbor hopping. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

lsoscalar (T = 0) plus isovector (T = 1) pairing Hamiltonian in LS-coupling. which is important for heavy N = Z nuclei, is solvable in terms of a SO(8) Lie algebra for three special values of the mixing parameter that measures the competition between the T = 0 aid T = 1 pairing. The SO(8) algebra is generated, amongst others, by the S = 1, T = 0 and S = 0, T = 1 pair creation and annihilation operators and corresponding to the three values of the mixing parameter, there are three chains of subalgebras: SO(8) superset of SOST (6) superset of SOS(3) circle times SOT(3), SO(8) superset of [SOS(5) superset of SOS(3)] circle times SOT(3) and SO(8) superset of [SOT(5) superset of SOT(3)] circle times SOS(3). Shell model Lie algebras, with only particle number conserving generators, that are complementary to these three chains of subalgebras are identified and they are used in the classification of states for a given number of nucleons. The classification problem is solved explicitly tor states with SO(8) seniority nu = 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4. Using them, hand structures in isospin space are identified for states with nu = 0, 1, 2 and 3. We study the combination of the hyperfine and Zeeman structure in the spin-orbit coupled A(1)Sigma(+)(u) = b(3)Pi(u) complex of Rb-87(2). For this purpose, absorption spectroscopy at a magnetic field around B = 1000 G is carried out. We drive optical dipole transitions from the lowest rotational state of an ultracold Feshbach molecule to various vibrational levels with 0(+) symmetry of the A - b complex. In contrast to previous measurements with rotationally excited alkali-dimers, we do not observe equal spacings of the hyperfine levels. In addition, the spectra vary substantially for different vibrational quantum numbers, and exhibit large splittings of up to 160 MHz, unexpected for 0(+) states. The level structure is explained to be a result of the repulsion between the states 0(+) and 0(-) of b(3)Pi(u), coupled via hyperfine and Zeeman interactions. In general, 0(-) and 0(+) have a spin-orbit induced energy spacing Delta, that is different for the individual vibrational states. From each measured spectrum we are able to extract Delta, which otherwise is not easily accessible in conventional spectroscopy schemes. We obtain values of Delta in the range of +/- 100 GHz which can be described by coupled channel calculations if a spin-orbit coupling is introduced that is different for 0(-) and 0(+) of b(3)Pi(u).

We consider the statistical properties of the local density of states of a one-dimensional Dirac equation in the presence of various types of disorder with Gaussian white-noise distribution. It is shown how either the replica trick or supersymmetry can be used to calculate exactly all the moments of the local density of states.' Careful attention is paid to how the results change if the local density of states is averaged over atomic length scales. For both the replica trick and supersymmetry the problem is reduced to finding the ground state of a zero-dimensional Hamiltonian which is written solely in terms of a pair of coupled spins which are elements of u(1, 1). This ground state is explicitly found for the particular case of the Dirac equation corresponding to an infinite metallic quantum wire with a single conduction channel. The calculated moments of the local density of states agree with those found previously by Al'tshuler and Prigodin [Sov. Phys. JETP 68 (1989) 198] using a technique based on recursion relations for Feynman diagrams. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A one-step melt-mixing method is proposed to study dispersion and re-agglomeration phenomena of the as-received and functionalized graphite nanoplates in polypropylene melts. Graphite nanoplates were chemically modified via 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of an azomethine ylide and then grafted with polypropylene-graft-maleic anhydride. The effect of surface functionalization on the dispersion kinetics, nanoparticle re-agglomeration and interface bonding with the polymer is investigated. Nanocomposites with 2 or 10 wt% of as-received and functionalized graphite nanoplates were prepared in a small-scale prototype mixer coupled to a capillary rheometer. Samples were collected along the flow axis and characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and electrical conductivity measurements. The as-received graphite nanoplates tend to re-agglomerate upon stress relaxation of the polymer melt. The covalent attachment of a polymer to the nanoparticle surface enhances the stability of dispersion, delaying the re-agglomeration. Surface modification also improves interfacial interactions and the resulting composites presented improved electrical conductivity.

The chemical and isotopic compositions (deltaD(H2O), delta(18)O(H2O), delta(18)O(CO2), delta(13)C(CO2), delta(34)S, and He/N-2 and He/Ar ratios) of fumarolic gases from Nisyros, Greece, indicate that both arc-type magmatic water and local seawater feed the hydrothermal system. Isotopic composition of the deep fluid is estimated to be +4.9+/-0.5parts per thousand for delta(18)O and -11+/-5parts per thousand for deltaD corresponding to a magmatic water fraction of 0.7. Interpretation of the stable water isotopes was based on liquid-vapor separation conditions obtained through gas geothermometry. The H-2-Ar, H-2-N-2, and H-2-H2O geothermometers suggest reservoir temperatures of 345+/-15 degreesC, in agreement with temperatures measured in deep geothermal wells, whereas a vapor/liquid separation temperature of 260+/-30 degreesC is indicated by gas equilibria in the H2O-H-2-CO2-CO-CH4 system. The largest magmatic inputs seem to occur below the Stephanos-Polybotes Micros crater, whereas the marginal fumarolic areas of Phlegeton-Polybotes Megalos craters receive a smaller contribution of magmatic gases.

It is commonly believed that majority voting enhances parties to cluster around the centre of the political space, whereas proportional systems (PR) foster great ideological divergence. The theoretical arguments for these expectations go back to the work of Downs (1957) and Duverger (1954). More recent studies, however, produced quite contradictory empirical findings. In this paper I will test whether similar arguments hold true for the positioning of candidates campaigning in different electoral systems. The elections for the two chambers of the Swiss Parliament and the data from the Swiss Electoral Studies (SELECTS) and the Swiss Voting Advice Application (VAA) smartvote offer an excellent - almost laboratory like - opportunity to do so empirically. The analyses show clearly, the theoretical claims that majority voting necessarily fosters more moderate positions find no support. The candidates for the Council of States, elected in a majority system, are not more moderate than their fellow party candidates for the National Council which are elected in a PR system.

Starting from a finite or countable set of states of health, and assumingthe existence of an objective transitive preference relation on that set,we propose a way of performing interpersonal comparisons of states ofhealth. In so doing, we first consider the population divided into types, and consider that two individuals of a different type have a comparablestate of health whenever they sit at the same centile of their respectivetype. A way of comparing and evaluating states of health for differentgroups is then proposed and rationalized. This can be viewed as both analternative and an extension of the traditional QALY approach.

This paper deals with the determination of the interface density of states in amorphous silicon-based multilayers. Photothermal deflection spectroscopy is used to characterize two series of aSi:H/aSi1-xCx:H multilayers, and a new approach in the treatment of experimental dada is used in order to obtain accurate results. From this approach, an upper limit of 10^10 cm-2 is determined for the interface density of states.
