Recent changes in electricity markets (EMs) have been potentiating the globalization of distributed generation. With distributed generation the number of players acting in the EMs and connected to the main grid has grown, increasing the market complexity. Multi-agent simulation arises as an interesting way of analysing players’ behaviour and interactions, namely coalitions of players, as well as their effects on the market. MASCEM was developed to allow studying the market operation of several different players and MASGriP is being developed to allow the simulation of the micro and smart grid concepts in very different scenarios This paper presents a methodology based on artificial intelligence techniques (AI) for the management of a micro grid. The use of fuzzy logic is proposed for the analysis of the agent consumption elasticity, while a case based reasoning, used to predict agents’ reaction to price changes, is an interesting tool for the micro grid operator.

The work presented in this thesis concerns the dimensioning of an Energy Storage System (ESS) which will be used as an energy buffer for a grid-connected PV plant. This ESS should help managing the PV plant to inject electricity into the grid according to the requirements of the grid System Operator. It is desired to obtain a final production not below 1300kWh/kWp with a maximum ESS budget of 0.9€/Wp. The PV plant will be sited in Martinique Island and connected to the main grid. This grid is a small one where the perturbations due clouds in the PV generation are not negligible anymore. A software simulation tool, incorporating a model for the PV-plant production, the ESS and the required injection pattern of electricity into the grid has been developed in MS Excel. This tool has been used to optimize the relevant parameters defining the ESS so that the feed-in of electricity into the grid can be controlled to fulfill the conditions given by the System Operator. The inputs used for this simulation tool are, besides the conditions given by the System Operator on the allowed injection pattern, the production data from a similar PV-plant in a close-by location, and variables for defining the ESS. The PV production data used is from a site with similar climate and weather conditions as for the site on the Martinique Island and hence gives information on the short term insolation variations as well as expected annual electricity production. The ESS capacity and the injected electric energy will be the main figures to compare while doing an economic study of the whole plant. Hence, the Net Present Value, Benefit to Cost method and Pay-back period studies are carried on as dependent of the ESS capacity. The conclusion of this work is that it is possible to obtain the requested injection pattern by using an ESS. The design of the ESS can be made within an acceptable budget. The capacity of ESS to link with the PV system depends on the priorities of the final output characteristics, and it also depends on which economic parameter that is chosen as a priority.

Tehoerottimen avulla voidaan erottaa jännitteellinen sähköverkon osa sähköverkosta tai muuttaa sähköverkon kytkentätilaa. Tehoerottimen virrankatkaisukyky on rajattu ja sen käyttökohteiksi soveltuvat lähinnä tyhjäkäyvien verkkojen ja muuntajien erottaminen sekä kuormitetun verkon kytkentätilan muuttaminen. Työssä käsitellään erään tehoerotintyypin teknistä soveltuvuutta Suomen kantaverkkoon 110 kV jännitteellä. Tehoerottimen teknistä soveltuvuutta tarkastellaan laskemalla tyhjäkäyville johdoille johtojen ominaisarvot ja tekniset edellytykset johtojen erottamiselle. Lisäksi tehoerottimen katkaisukyky mallinnetaan simuloimalla ja tutkitaan onko mahdollista turvallisesti asentaa tehoerotin kantaverkkoon, vaikka IEC- standardin vaatimuksia ei voida täyttää. Työn lopussa tutkitaan tehoerottimen taloudellista kannattavuutta. Kustannuksia verrataan muihin ratkaisuihinja eri ratkaisujen kustannuksiin erisuuruisilla laitteiden käyttömäärillä.

Interconnection of loads and small size generation forms a new type of distribution systems, the Microgrid. The microgrids can be operated together with the utility grid or be operated autonomously in an island. Thesesmall grids present a new paradigm of the construction of the low voltage distribution systems. The microgrids in the distribution systems can become small, controllable units, which immediately react to the system's changes. Along with that the microgrids can realize the special properties, such as increasing the reliability, reducing losses, voltage sag correction, uninterruptible supplying. The goals of the thesis are to explain the principles of the microgrid's functioning, to clarify the main ideas and positive features of the microgrids, to find out and prove their advantages and explain why they are so popular nowadays all over the world. The practical aims of the thesis are to construct and build a test setup of a microgrid based on two inverters from SMA Technologie AG in the laboratory and to test all the main modes and parameters of the microgrid's operating. Also the purpose of the thesis is to test the main component of the microgrid - the battery inverter which controls allthe processes and energy flows inside a microgrid and communicates with the main grid. Based on received data the main contribution of the thesis consists of the estimation of the established microgrid from the reliability, economy and simplicity of operating points of view and evaluation ofthe advisability of its use in different conditions. Moreover, the thesis assumes to give the recommendations and advice for the future investigations of the built system.

Nyky yhteiskunta tulee päivä päivältä riippuvaisemmaksi sähköstä ja sen luotettavasta siirrosta ja jakelusta. Suurhäiriö kantaverkossa on erittäin epätodennäköinen, mutta sen mahdollisuutta ei koskaan voida kokonaan rajata pois. Suurhäiriön seuraukset ovat erittäin vakavat ja yhteiskäytön palautus häiriön jälkeen voi pitkittyä. Diplomityössä käsitellään kantaverkkoyhtiö Fingrid Oyj:n kaasuturpiinivaravoimalaitoksia ja niiden ominaisuuksia kantaverkon suurhäiriössä. Varavoimalaitosten pimeäkäynnistysvalmiudet tarkastettiin ja niissä suoritettiin koeajoja, jotka sisälsivät jatkuvan ja dynaamisen tilan koeajo osuudet. Yhdessä laitosyksikössä tehtiin myös pimeäkäynnistys ja saarekekoeajo. Koeajojen perusteella saatiin arvokasta perustietoa kaasuturpiinilaitosten ominaisuuksista ja mahdollisuuksista toimia pimeäkäynnistystilanteissa. Varavoimalaitosten matemaattista mallintamista yksinkertaisella teollisuuskaasuturpiinilaitoksen mallilla kokeiltiin siinä kuitenkaan onnistumatta. Kokemusten perusteella esitetään keskeisimmät havainnot ja ehdotukset kevyen, moniakselisen kaasuturpiinilaitoksen mallintamiseksi.

The aim of this master’s thesis is to develop an algorithm to calculate the cable network for heat and power station CHGRES. This algorithm includes important aspect which has an influence on the cable network reliability. Moreover, according to developed algorithm, the optimal solution for modernization cable system from economical and technical point of view was obtained. The conditions of existing cable lines show that replacement is necessary. Otherwise, the fault situation would happen. In this case company would loss not only money but also its prestige. As a solution, XLPE single core cables are more profitable than other types of cable considered in this work. Moreover, it is presented the dependence of value of short circuit current on number of 10/110 kV transformers connected in parallel between main grid and considered 10 kV busbar and how it affects on final decision. Furthermore, the losses of company in power (capacity) market due to fault situation are presented. These losses are commensurable with investment to replace existing cable system.

Kantaverkkoyhtiö Fingrid Oy on tarkastellut kantaverkosta otettua tai tuotettua loistehoa alueittain Fingridin määrittelemällä maantieteellisellä tavalla. Alue koostuu liittymispisteistä, jotka ovat yksittäisten verkkoyhtiöiden liittymispisteitä. Yhden alueen sisällä voi siis olla monia eri verkkoyhtiöiden liittymispisteitä. Vuodesta 2016 alkaen loistehon tarkastelu vaihtuu aluetarkastelusta liittymispistetarkasteluun. Liittymispistetarkasteluun siirtymisen myötä tulee verkkoyhtiöiden investoida erinäisiin kompensointiratkaisuihin, jotta yksittäisten liittymispisteiden loistehot pysyvät Fingridin asettaman loistehon tarkasteluikkunan sisällä. Työssä perehdytään erinäisiin kompensointiratkaisuihin ja niiden kytkentöihin sekä kytkentöjen vaikutuksiin olemassa olevaan sähköverkkoon. Lisäksi työssä käsitellään tuulivoimaloiden hyödyntämistä loistehon säädössä. Esimerkkitapauksessa tarkastellaan erästä Caruna Oy:n verkkoa ja pohditaan teknistä ja mahdollisimman taloudellista kompensointiratkaisua kyseiseen verkkoon. Työn lopputulos on, että maakaapeloinnin määrän kasvaessa loistehon kompensoinnin tarve kasvaa. Näin ollen Fingrid Oy:ltä tarvitaan selkeitä linjauksia moneen ongelmakohtaan, kuten tuotanto-kulutuspisteen loistehon tarkasteluun. Lisäksi Energiavirastolta tarvitaan kannusteita loistehon kompensointiin, sillä verkkoyhtiöiden liiketoiminta perustuu regulaatiomalliin ja kompensointilaitteiston yksikköhinnasto on hyvin suppea.

Tutkimuksessa käsitelty kemikaalitehdas on 110 kV:n kantaverkkoon liittyvä tehointensiivinen teollisuuslaitos. Prosessien käyttöön mukautetut sähkönjakeluverkon yliaaltosuodattimet ja niiden käyttökytkennät ovat tärkeässä asemassa loistehon tuoton hallitsemiseksi liittymän loistehoikkunaan ja riittävän yliaaltosuodatuksen järjestämiseksi häviöt minimoiden. Kohteena olleen kemikaalitehtaan sähkönjakeluverkon kompensointia ja yliaaltosuodatusta on viimeksi tutkittu vuonna 2003. Tämän jälkeen verkostokomponentit ovat ikääntyneet, prosessien käyttö sekä pienjänniteverkko ovat muuttuneet ja tehdasta käyttävät osittain eri henkilöt. Nykytilaselvitykselle ja verkon kehityskohteiden analysoinnille on tullut tarve edellisen selvityksen jatkoksi. Tutkimus painottuu vahvasti kenttämittauksiin, joiden perusteella sekä kirjallisuutta ja tehtaan järjestelmiä hyödyntäen määritetään loistehotasot verkon keskeisimmissä kohteissa pien-, keski- ja suurjännitetasoilla. Tutkimuksessa esitetään lipeätehtaan suotimien uudelleenjärjestely 4. yliaallon vähentämiseksi ja yksikkökoon pienentämiseksi. Kantaverkon liittymäpisteen tilanne oli hyväksyttävä. Tutkimus esittää pienjännitekompensointia KF-4-100 keskukseen varayhteyden kapasiteettia lisäten. Tutkimus tuotti yleistietoutta verkon käytöstä ja selvitti parhaat käyttökytkennät loistehoikkunan hallitsemiseksi ilman loistehokustannuksia.

Human development requires a broad balance between ecological, social and economic factors in order to ensure its own sustainability. In this sense, the search for new sources of energy generation, with low deployment and operation costs, which cause the least possible impact to the environment, has been the focus of attention of all society segments. To do so, the reduction in exploration of fossil fuels and the encouragement of using renewable energy resources for distributed generation have proved interesting alternatives to the expansion of the energy matrix of various countries in the world. In this sense, the wind energy has acquired an increasingly significant role, presenting increasing rates of power grid penetration and highlighting technological innovations such as the use of permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSG). In Brazil, this fact has also been noted and, as a result, the impact of the inclusion of this source in the distribution and sub-transmission power grid has been a major concern of utilities and agents connected to Brazilian electrical sector. Thus, it is relevant the development of appropriate computational tools that allow detailed predictive studies about the dynamic behavior of wind farms, either operating with isolated load, either connected to the main grid, taking also into account the implementation of control strategies for active/reactive power generation and the keeping of adequate levels of voltage and frequency. This work fits in this context since it comprises mathematical and computational developments of a complete wind energy conversion system (WECS) endowed with PMSG using time domain techniques of Alternative Transients Program (ATP), which prides itself a recognized reputation by scientific and academic communities as well as by electricity professionals in Brazil and elsewhere. The modeling procedures performed allowed the elaboration of blocks representing each of the elements of a real WECS, comprising the primary source (the wind), the wind turbine, the PMSG, the frequency converter, the step up transformer, the load composition and the power grid equivalent. Special attention is also given to the implementation of wind turbine control techniques, mainly the pitch control responsible for keeping the generator under the maximum power operation point, and the vector theory that aims at adjusting the active/reactive power flow between the wind turbine and the power grid. Several simulations are performed to investigate the dynamic behavior of the wind farm when subjected to different operating conditions and/or on the occurrence of wind intensity variations. The results have shown the effectiveness of both mathematical and computational modeling developed for the wind turbine and the associated controls.

Purpose: An increase in the number of pedelecs on Swedish roads is according to studies soon reality. This creates a need to adapt the bmp-grid (bike-, moped- and pedestrian-grid) to pedelecs for them to experience good security, accessibility and comfort while using it. The guidelines Swedish municipalities follow are VGU(Design of Roads and Streets) and the GCM-manual(Bike-, moped-, and pedestrian-manual) which currently do not take society’s future increase of pedelecs into account. VGU and the GCM-manual are tools that are commonly used during planning and design of roads and streets. The aim of the thesis is to use current advice and recommendations on how to adapt the bmp-grid to the pedelec and with this complete current guidelines for bmp-infrastructure. Method: The document-analysis is made on current federal documents that have an impact on bmp-design. Scetch-suggestions were then developed from the author’s personal improvement suggestions and from advice and recommendations gathered during the document-analysis and the theoretical framework. Findings: It was discovered that if the bmp-grid’s design allow bikes traveling up to 30km/h and has a good standard for bicycles according to VGU, then the infrastructure generally fulfil the needs of the pedelec. Altough there are still areas in VGU that needs complements. This need to be done on the design-guidelines so they can aid the adaption of the infrastructure to the pedelec during the planning- and design process. Necessary steps according to the result is to give clearer notifications on bmp-design, issue guidelines for choosing DTS, motivate minimal widths on roads, categories bikers and pedestrians into separate groups, give out more detailed descriptions of when separation of bikers and pedestrians should be done and also to specify different types of bike-users. When taking needs and claim of the pedelec into consideration the result shows that: adaption of the whole bmp-grid to the pedelec is not possible, to simplify priorities the bmp-grid needs to be divided into different sections, space should be taken from the car-traffic, solutions with mixed-traffic and bike-fields for pedelecs can be used in low-speed areas, larger opportunities to connect towns to increase commuting with bicycles appeared with the pedelec. Implications: After examining current guidelines regarding the design of the bmp-grid and gathering opinions on this from interviews the conclusion is that several areas in VGU needs completion. The following are recommendations on how to take the pedelec into consideration during the design-process:• Connect towns and urban-areas with bmp-grids to make use of pedelecs capacity.• Where there is not enough space for both cars and separated pedelec- and bike lanes the speed for car-traffic can be lowered to 30km/h. This creates opportunities with mixed-traffic or bike-lanes.• The width of existing roads and streets are often greater than what’s described in VGU. They can be made smaller to free space on roads for bicycle-infrastructure.• To prioritize which parts of the bmp-grid that needs design to allow pedelecs the bmp-grid can be divided into main- and local grid. The main grid should be design with consideration to the needs and claim of the pedelecs. Limitations: The limitation of the study lies in that none of the interviews where done with employees in any of the bigger municipalities in Sweden. The continuous growth of global population brings an exponential increase on energy consumption and greenhouse gas emission in the atmosphere contributing to the increase of the planet temperature. Therefore, it is mandatory to adopt renewable energy production systems like photovoltaic or wind power: unfortunately, the main limit of these technologies is the natural intermittence of the energy sources that limits their applicability. The key enabling technology for a widespread usage of clean power sources are electrochemical energy storage systems, most commonly known as batteries. Batteries will enable the storage of energy during overproduction period and the release during low production period stabilizing the power outcome, allowing the connection to the main grid and increasing the applicability of renewable energy sources. Despite the high number of benefits that the widespread use of batteries will bring, starting from the reduction of CO2 emitted in the atmosphere, it is necessary also to take care of the environmental impact of processes and materials used for the production of electrochemical storage systems. In addition, there are many different battery systems, with different chemistries and designs that require specific strategies. Nowadays, the most part of the materials and chemicals used for battery production are toxic for humans and the environment. For this reason, this Ph.D. thesis addresses the challenging scope of lowering the environmental impact of manufacturing processes of different electrochemical energy storage systems using natural derived or low carbon footprint materials while increasing the performances with respect to commercial devices. The activities carried out during my Ph.D. cover a high number of different electrochemical storage systems involving a wide range of electrochemical processes from capacitive to faradic. New materials, different production processes and new battery design, all in view of sustainability and low environmental impact, increased the innovative and challenging aspects of this work.

The definition and programming of distributed applications has become a major research issue due to the increasing availability of (large scale) distributed platforms and the requirements posed by the economical globalization. However, such a task requires a huge effort due to the complexity of the distributed environments: large amount of users may communicate and share information across different authority domains; moreover, the “execution environment” or “computations” are dynamic since the number of users and the computational infrastructure change in time. Grid environments, in particular, promise to be an answer to deal with such complexity, by providing high performance execution support to large amount of users, and resource sharing across different organizations. Nevertheless, programming in Grid environments is still a difficult task. There is a lack of high level programming paradigms and support tools that may guide the application developer and allow reusability of state-of-the-art solutions. Specifically, the main goal of the work presented in this thesis is to contribute to the simplification of the development cycle of applications for Grid environments by bringing structure and flexibility to three stages of that cycle through a commonmodel. The stages are: the design phase, the execution phase, and the reconfiguration phase. The common model is based on the manipulation of patterns through pattern operators, and the division of both patterns and operators into two categories, namely structural and behavioural. Moreover, both structural and behavioural patterns are first class entities at each of the aforesaid stages. At the design phase, patterns can be manipulated like other first class entities such as components. This allows a more structured way to build applications by reusing and composing state-of-the-art patterns. At the execution phase, patterns are units of execution control: it is possible, for example, to start or stop and to resume the execution of a pattern as a single entity. At the reconfiguration phase, patterns can also be manipulated as single entities with the additional advantage that it is possible to perform a structural reconfiguration while keeping some of the behavioural constraints, and vice-versa. For example, it is possible to replace a behavioural pattern, which was applied to some structural pattern, with another behavioural pattern. In this thesis, besides the proposal of the methodology for distributed application development, as sketched above, a definition of a relevant set of pattern operators was made. The methodology and the expressivity of the pattern operators were assessed through the development of several representative distributed applications. To support this validation, a prototype was designed and implemented, encompassing some relevant patterns and a significant part of the patterns operators defined. This prototype was based in the Triana environment; Triana supports the development and deployment of distributed applications in the Grid through a dataflow-based programming model. Additionally, this thesis also presents the analysis of a mapping of some operators for execution control onto the Distributed Resource Management Application API (DRMAA). This assessment confirmed the suitability of the proposed model, as well as the generality and flexibility of the defined pattern operators

Smart grids with an intensive penetration of distributed energy resources will play an important role in future power system scenarios. The intermittent nature of renewable energy sources brings new challenges, requiring an efficient management of those sources. Additional storage resources can be beneficially used to address this problem; the massive use of electric vehicles, particularly of vehicle-to-grid (usually referred as gridable vehicles or V2G), becomes a very relevant issue. This paper addresses the impact of Electric Vehicles (EVs) in system operation costs and in power demand curve for a distribution network with large penetration of Distributed Generation (DG) units. An efficient management methodology for EVs charging and discharging is proposed, considering a multi-objective optimization problem. The main goals of the proposed methodology are: to minimize the system operation costs and to minimize the difference between the minimum and maximum system demand (leveling the power demand curve). The proposed methodology perform the day-ahead scheduling of distributed energy resources in a distribution network with high penetration of DG and a large number of electric vehicles. It is used a 32-bus distribution network in the case study section considering different scenarios of EVs penetration to analyze their impact in the network and in the other energy resources management.

This paper presents a methodology for multi-objective day-ahead energy resource scheduling for smart grids considering intensive use of distributed generation and Vehicle- To-Grid (V2G). The main focus is the application of weighted Pareto to a multi-objective parallel particle swarm approach aiming to solve the dual-objective V2G scheduling: minimizing total operation costs and maximizing V2G income. A realistic mathematical formulation, considering the network constraints and V2G charging and discharging efficiencies is presented and parallel computing is applied to the Pareto weights. AC power flow calculation is included in the metaheuristics approach to allow taking into account the network constraints. A case study with a 33-bus distribution network and 1800 V2G resources is used to illustrate the performance of the proposed method.
