People often make use of a spatial "mental time line" to represent events in time. We investigated whether the eyes follow such a mental time line during online language comprehension of sentences that refer to the past, present, and future. Participants' eye movements were measured on a blank screen while they listened to these sentences. Saccade direction revealed that the future is mapped higher up in space than the past. Moreover, fewer saccades were made when two events are simultaneously taking place at the present moment compared to two events that are happening in different points in time. This is the first evidence that oculomotor correlates reflect mental looking along an abstract invisible time line during online language comprehension about time. Our results support the idea that observing eye movements is likely to "detect" invisible spatial scaffoldings which are involved in cognitively processing abstract meaning, even when the abstract meaning lacks an explicit spatial correlate. Theoretical implications of these findings are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to develop an instrument to measure high school students’ perspectives on global awareness and attitudes toward social issues. The research questions that guided this study were: (a) Can acceptable validity and reliability estimates be established for an instrument developed to measure high schools students' global awareness? (b) Can acceptable validity and reliability estimates be established for an instrument developed to measure high schools students' attitudes towards global social issues? (c) What is the relationship between high school students’ GPA, race/ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status, parents’ education, getting the news, reading and listening habits, the number of classes taken in the social sciences, whether they speak a second language, and have experienced living in or visiting other countries, and their perception of global awareness and attitudes toward global social issues. ^ An ex post facto research design was used and the data were collected using a 4-part Likert-type survey. It was administered to 14 schools in the Miami-Dade County, Florida area to 704 students. A factor analysis with an orthogonal varimax rotation was vii used to select the factors that best represented the three constructs – global education, global citizenship, and global workforce. This was done to establish construct validity. Cronbach’s alpha was used to determine the reliability of the instrument. Descriptive statistics and a hierarchical multiple regression were used for the demographics to establish their relationship, if any, to the findings. ^ Key findings of the study were that reliable and valid estimates can be developed for the instrument. The multiple regression analysis for model 1 and 2 accounted for a variance of 3% and 5% for self-perceptions of global awareness (factor 1). The regression model also accounted for a 5% and 13% variance in the two models for attitudes toward global social issues (factor 2). The demographics that were statistically significant were: ethnicity, gender, SES, parents’ education, listening to music, getting the news, speaking a second language, GPA, classes taken in the social sciences, and visiting other countries. An important finding for the study was those attending public schools (as opposed to private schools) had more positive attitudes towards global social issues (factor 2) The statistics indicated that these students had taken history, economics, and social studies – a curriculum infused with global perspectives.^

Background For decades film has proved to be a powerful form of communication. Whether produced as entertainment, art or documentary, films have the capacity to inform and move us. Films are a highly attractive teaching instrument and an appropriate teaching method in health education. It is a valuable tool for studying situations most transcendental to human beings such as pain, disease and death. Objectives The objectives were to determine how this helps students engage with their role as health care professionals; to determine how they view the personal experience of illness, disease, disability or death; and to determine how this may impact upon their provision of patient care. Design, Setting and Participants The project was underpinned by the film selection determined by considerate review, intensive scrutiny, contemplation and discourse by the research team. 7 films were selected, ranging from animation; foreign, documentary, biopic and Hollywood drama. Each film was shown discretely, in an acoustic lecture theatre projected onto a large screen to pre-registration student nurses (adult, child and mental health) across each year of study from different cohorts (n = 49). Method A mixed qualitative method approach consisted of audio-recorded 5-minute reactions post film screening; coded questionnaires; and focus group. Findings were drawn from the impact of the films through thematic analysis of data sets and subjective text condensation categorised as: new insights looking through patient eyes; evoking emotion in student nurses; spiritual care; going to the moves to learn about the patient experience; self discovery through films; using films to link theory to practice. Results Deeper learning through film as a powerful medium was identified in meeting the objectives of the study. Integration of film into pre registration curriculum, pedagogy, teaching and learning is recommended. Conclusion The teaching potential of film stems from the visual process linked to human emotion and experience. Its impact has the power to not only help in learning the values that underpin nursing, but also for respecting the patient experience of disease, disability, death and its reality.

Participants in an immersive virtual environment interact with the scene from an egocentric point of view that is, where there bodies appear to be located rather than from outside as if looking through a window. People interact through normal body movements, such as head-turning,reaching, and bending, and within the tracking limitations move through the environment or effect changes within it in natural ways.

Tutkielman tavoitteena on tutkia veronkiertosäännöksen eli VML 28 §:n soveltamista sivuutettaessa osakeyhtiö verotuksessa. Tutkielma on rajattu tapauksiin, joissa osakeyhtiön tuloa on sivuutettu ja verotettu osakkaan palkkatulona. Tutkielma muodostuu lähinnä kirjallisuuteen ja lainsäädäntöön perustuvista teoriaosista sekä oikeuskäytäntöön pohjautuvasta tutkimusosasta. Tutkimus on oikeusdogmaattinen, eli tarkoituksena on selvittää voimassa olevan lainsäädännön sisältö. Tutkimuksessa on käyty läpi korkeimman hallinto-oikeuden ja hallinto-oikeuksien päätöksiä ja selvitetty näiden avulla kriteerejä, joita voidaan pitää tunnusmerkkeinä vallitsevasta palkkasuhteesta. Tämä saattaa johtaa verotuksessa osakeyhtiön tulon sivuuttamiseen. Päätös osakeyhtiön sivuuttamisesta tehdään kuitenkin aina kokonaisarvioinnin perusteella. Päätöksen lopputulokseen vaikuttaa kuitenkin merkittävästi mm. osakeyhtiön toimeksiantajien lukumäärä. Mikäli toimeksisaaja työskentelee hyvin samankaltaisissa olosuhteissa kuin toimeksiantajan työntekijät, voidaan osakeyhtiö verotuksessa sivuuttaa, mikäli tilanne tulee esille esim. verotarkastuksen yhteydessä.

Työssä käytiin läpi Porvoon jalostamon haihtuvien orgaanisten yhdisteiden päästömääritysmenetelmiä ja arvioitiin nykyisin käytössä olevien sekä uusien menetelmien soveltuvuutta Porvoon jalostamon päästömääritykseen. Nykyisten menetelmien arviointia tehtiin käymällä läpi eri alueiden 2000-luvun päästömäärät sekä vertaamalla päästömääriä muiden jalostamojen vastaaviin päästömääriin. Haihtuvista orgaanisista yhdisteistä puhuttaessa jätetään yleisesti metaani määritelmän ulkopuolelle ja käytetään termiä NMVOC-yhdisteet. Työssä laskettiin arvio Porvoon jalostamon metaanin päästömäärälle ja arvioitiin sen vaikutusta NMVOC-kokonaispäästömäärään. Metaanin kokonaispäästömäärien havaittiin olevan noin kymmenen kertaa haihtuvien orgaanisten yhdisteiden päästömääriä pienempiä, ja näin ollen niiden lisäämisellä NMVOC-päästöihin ei ole juuri vaikutusta. Myös menetelmien investointi- ja käyttökustannuksia, sekä pidemmän aikavälin kustannuksia arvioitiin. Kustannuksiltaan tällä hetkellä Porvoon jalostamolla käytössä olevat menetelmät ovat kustannustehokkaita. Uusista menetelmistä DIAL, SOF ja OGI ovat kustannuksiltaan huomattavasti kalliimpia, myös pitkän aikavälin vertailulla. Nykyisten menetelmien vuosittaiset kustannukset aiheutuvat mittausten vaatimista henkilötyötunneista. Uusista menetelmistä SOF ja DIAL vaativat ulkopuolisten mittaajien käyttämistä. Massavirran määrityksen suhteen vielä kehitysvaiheessa olevalla OGI-kameralla mitatessa voidaan käyttää mittaajina omaa henkilökuntaa. Toisin kuin DIAL- ja SOF-menetelmien laitteistot, OGI-kamera ostetaan omaksi ja näin ollen sitä voidaan käyttää tarpeen vaatiessa vuoden ympäri esimerkiksi suurien vuotajien paikallistamiseen ja LDAR-kiristysohjelman tukena. Tarkastelun perusteella olisi suositeltavaa tarkastaa nykyisin käytettävistä laskentamenetelmistä erityisesti prosessi- ja säiliöalueen sekä jätevesijärjestelmä päästömäärät käyttäen tarkempia DIAL-, SOF- tai myöhemmin OGI-menetelmiä ja muokata laskentamenetelmiä vastamaan näillä määritettyjä päästömääriä.
