Bringing Funds of Family Knowledge to school. The Living Morocco Project (“برغملا شيعلا”)

The purpose of the study, grounded in sociocultural theory, is to describe the funds of knowledge of a Moroccan family living in Catalonia (Spain) in order to document how teachers can use these funds of knowledge to make direct links between students' lives and classroom teaching. The funds of knowledge approach is based on a simple premise: regardless of any socio-economical and sociocultural "deficit" that people may or may not have all families accumulate bodies of beliefs, ideas, skills and abilities based on their experiences (in areas such as their occupation or their religion). The challenge consists in connecting these bodies of educational resources with teaching practice in order to connect the curriculum with students' lives. In doing so, qualitative research can be carried out using several techniques such as self portraits, self-definition tasks, assessment of family artefacts, documenting routines through photographs, or the analysis of a person's significant circle. The results in terms of teaching practices illustrate the variety of ways teachers can make connections between home and school in ways that assist learners in their academic development. Relations between communication and development of family farmers

This research investigates relations between communication and the development of family farmers from the Pontal do Paranapanema region (state of São Paulo), mainly in the municipality of Teodoro Sampaio. Family agriculture in this municipality is represented basically by beneficiaries the Agrarian Reform program. The main hypothesis is that communication contributes positively to the development of those family farmers. Thus, this study aimed to understand communication practices of these farmers and relate them with the development of their families. Quantitative and qualitative research methods were used. Development proxy is understood as the combination between the family living conditions and production. Among the main results, it was found that the effect of communication for "life and production conditions" increases as farmers at superior levels of "development" are analyzed; thus the main hypothesis should not be rejected for those farmers with higher development condition. For the others, communication did not have the same effect because many settled families are not focused on agricultural activities. The main suggestion is to improve ways for producers and professionals from public services related to them to access information.

An evolutionary theory of the family.

An evolutionary framework for viewing the formation, the stability, the organizational structure, and the social dynamics of biological families is developed. This framework is based upon three conceptual pillars: ecological constraints theory, inclusive fitness theory, and reproductive skew theory. I offer a set of 15 predictions pertaining to living within family groups. The logic of each is discussed, and empirical evidence from family-living vertebrates is summarized. I argue that knowledge of four basic parameters, (i) genetic relatedness, (ii) social dominance, (iii) the benefits of group living, and (iv) the probable success of independent reproduction, can explain many aspects of family life in birds and mammals. I suggest that this evolutionary perspective will provide insights into understanding human family systems as well.

A Previously Undescribed Syndrome Combining Fibular Agenesis/Hypoplasia, Oligodactylous Clubfeet, Anonychia/Ungual Hypoplasia, and Other Defects

We describe an apparently new genetic syndrome in six members of a family living in a remote area in Northeastern Brazil. This syndrome comprises: short stature Clue to a marked decrease in the length of the lower limbs (predominantly mesomelic with fibular agenesis/marked hypoplasia), grossly malformed/deformed clubfeet with severe oligodactyly, tipper limbs with acromial dimples and variable motion limitation of the forearms and/or hands, severe nail hypoplasia/anonychia sometimes associated with mild brachydactyly and occasionally with pre-axial polydactyly. This syndrome is apparently distinct from the syndrome of brachydactyly-ectrodactyly with fibular aplasia or hypoplasia (OMIM 113310), the syndrome of fibular aplasia or hypoplasia, femoral bowing and poly-, syn-, and oligodactyly (OMIM 228930), and from other previously described conditions exhibiting fibular agenesis/hvpoplasia. Kulturlandschaft genießen - Natur im Kontext der Ernährungskultur

Wie leben Menschen? Welche Lebensmittel konsumieren sie? Und: Welches Verständnis von Natur und Ernährungskultur spiegelt sich darin wider? Fragen, denen der vorliegende Beitrag unter der Überschrift "Kulturlandschaft genießen - Natur im Kontext der Ernährungskultur" nachgeht. Besondere Beachtung finden dabei die, durch einen Wandel der Lebensstile implizierten Veränderungen im Alltagshandeln der Bevölkerung Deutschlands. Auch werden Möglichkeiten einer Sensibilisierung für frische, naturbelassene Lebensmittel und deren Qualität erörtert.

Ist der Ernährungsführerschein eine geeignete Primärpräventionsmaßnahme, um die Ernährungssituation zu verbessern?

Das Ernährungsverhalten einer Bevölkerung hat einen wesentlichen Einfluss auf das Wohlbefinden, die Gesundheit und Leistungsfähigkeit der Menschen. Ernährungsbedingte, chronische Erkrankungen weisen in den westlichen Industrienationen eine hohe Inzidenz und Prävalenz auf. Präventionsmaßnahmen im Setting Schule sollen das Ernährungsverhalten der Kinder- und Jugendlichen positiv beeinflussen. Gerade in diesem Setting können Personen mit unterschiedlichem sozioökonomischem Status, sowie Personen aus diversen Lebensbereichen angesprochen werden. Der Ernährungsführerschein (EFS) ist eine schulbasierte Primärpräventions-maßnahme, der in der 3. Jahrgangsstufe/Grundschule durchgeführt wird. In 6 – 7 Unterrichtseinheiten erfolgt eine praxisnahe Vermittlung von Grundkenntnissen über Ernährung, Lebensmittel und deren Zubereitung. Der EFS möchte eine Verhaltensänderung der Schulkinder bewirken. Sie erlernen Kompetenzen, damit sie in der Lage sind, sich selbst eine gesunde Mahlzeit zubereiten zu können. Aber kann dieses Projekt eine nachhaltige Verhaltensänderung bewirken? Die folgende Studie mit Mixed-Methods-Ansatz im Explanatory-Sequential-Design versucht genau dieser Frage nachzugehen. Auf eine quantitative Prä- und Postbefragung in 16 Klassen an 12 Grundschulen im Landkreis Marburg Biedenkopf und insgesamt 992 Befragungen folgte eine qualitative Studie mit neun problemzentrierten, leitfadengestützten Interviews. Der EFS zeigt keinen signifikanten Einfluss auf die Veränderung des Ernährungsverhaltens. Positiv zu bewerten ist, dass durch den EFS Alltagskompetenzen bei der Nahrungszubereitung gefördert wurden. Dieser positive Einfluss muss jedoch differenziert betrachtet werden, denn die qualitativen Studie zeigt, dass der EFS sehr gut in Familien aufgenommen wird, die sich bereits mit Ernährungsfragen auseinandersetzen und darauf achten, einen ernährungsphysiologisch günstigen Ernährungsstil zu leben oder anzustreben. In Familien der Billig- und Fleischesser konnte der EFS die Türen nicht öffnen. Aber gerade in diesem Segment wäre eine Veränderung des Essverhaltens induziert. Die Untersuchung ergab, dass der EFS für sich alleine nicht den Anspruch erheben kann, die Ernährungssituation der Kinder und Familien zu verbessern. Aber er bietet ein methodisch-didaktisch gut ausgearbeitetes Konzept und könnte als Baustein in die Entwicklung eines praxisnahen, erlebnisorientierten und ganzheitlichen Ernährungsbildungskonzepts unter Berücksichtigung diverser Settings und Lebenswelten der Kinder und Familien einfließen.

Adaptación inicial del instrumento Espacio de Vida de la Familia (FLS) : Localidad de Kennedy , Bogotá, D.C.

El propósito de la presente investigación fue realizar la adaptación inicial del instrumento Espacio de Vida de la Familia (FLS) en el contexto de la localidad de Kennedy. La investigación tomó desde la teoría los pasos para la adaptación de pruebas e instrumentos sugeridos por autores reconocidos, además definió las dimensiones y factores del instrumento; contó con el concepto de tres jueces expertos para determinar el nivel de acuerdo de los factores del mismo; en la aplicación piloto se administraron los instrumentos espacio de vida de la familia FLS y el Inventario de satisfacción marital en la versión adaptada ACI para esta investigación; esto permitió hacer los ajustes para la aplicación en la muestra de 5 parejas en crisis y en 5 parejas que no estaban en crisis. Los resultados obtenidos mostraron una asociación fuerte entre los 2 instrumentos y al realizar la prueba de U de Mann-Whitney se evidenciaron diferencias significativas entre los dos grupos salvo en el factor de relaciones con otras personas. Concluyendo que el instrumento espacio de vida de la familia FLS no permite diferenciar el factor de relación con otras personas y por tanto no se ajusta al contexto local. Finalmente la investigación estableció unas normas de administración y aplicación del instrumento espacio de vida de la familia FLS.

The discourse surrounding the virtual has moved away from the utopian thinking accompanying the rise of the Internet in the 1990s. The Cyber-gurus of the last decades promised a technotopia removed from materiality and the confines of the flesh and the built environment, a liberation from old institutions and power structures. But since then, the virtual has grown into a distinct yet related sphere of cultural and political production that both parallels and occasionally flows over into the old world of material objects. The strict dichotomy of matter and digital purity has been replaced more recently with a more complex model where both the world of stuff and the world of knowledge support, resist and at the same time contain each other. Online social networks amplify and extend existing ones; other cultural interfaces like youtube have not replaced the communal experience of watching moving images in a semi-public space (the cinema) or the semi-private space (the family living room). Rather the experience of viewing is very much about sharing and communicating, offering interpretations and comments. Many of the web’s strongest entities (Amazon, eBay, Gumtree etc.) sit exactly at this juncture of applying tools taken from the knowledge management industry to organize the chaos of the material world along (post-)Fordist rationality. Since the early 1990s there have been many artistic and curatorial attempts to use the Internet as a platform of producing and exhibiting art, but a lot of these were reluctant to let go of the fantasy of digital freedom. Storage Room collapses the binary opposition of real and virtual space by using online data storage as a conduit for IRL art production. The artworks here will not be available for viewing online in a 'screen' environment but only as part of a downloadable package with the intention that the exhibition could be displayed (in a physical space) by any interested party and realised as ambitiously or minimally as the downloader wishes, based on their means. The artists will therefore also supply a set of instructions for the physical installation of the work alongside the digital files. In response to this curatorial initiative, File Transfer Protocol invites seven UK based artists to produce digital art for a physical environment, addressing the intersection between the virtual and the material. The files range from sound, video, digital prints and net art, blueprints for an action to take place, something to be made, a conceptual text piece, etc. About the works and artists: Polly Fibre is the pseudonym of London-based artist Christine Ellison. Ellison creates live music using domestic devices such as sewing machines, irons and slide projectors. Her costumes and stage sets propose a physical manifestation of the virtual space that is created inside software like Photoshop. For this exhibition, Polly Fibre invites the audience to create a musical composition using a pair of amplified scissors and a turntable. http://www.pollyfibre.com John Russell, a founding member of 1990s art group Bank, is an artist, curator and writer who explores in his work the contemporary political conditions of the work of art. In his digital print, Russell collages together visual representations of abstract philosophical ideas and transforms them into a post apocalyptic landscape that is complex and banal at the same time. www.john-russell.org The work of Bristol based artist Jem Nobel opens up a dialogue between the contemporary and the legacy of 20th century conceptual art around questions of collectivism and participation, authorship and individualism. His print SPACE concretizes the representation of the most common piece of Unicode: the vacant space between words. Frankenstein 2, or the Monster of Main Stream, is read in parts by different performers, embodying the psychotic character of the protagonist, a mongrel hybrid of used language. www.annabelfrearson.com Darren Banks uses fragments of effect laden Holywood films to create an impossible space. The fictitious parts don't add up to a convincing material reality, leaving the viewer with a failed amalgamation of simulations of sophisticated technologies. www.darrenbanks.co.uk FIELDCLUB is collaboration between artist Paul Chaney and researcher Kenna Hernly. Chaney and Hernly developed together a project that critically examines various proposals for the management of sustainable ecological systems. Their FIELDMACHINE invites the public to design an ideal agricultural field. By playing with different types of crops that are found in the south west of England, it is possible for the user, for example, to create a balanced, but protein poor, diet or to simply decide to 'get rid' of half the population. The meeting point of the Platonic field and it physical consequences, generates a geometric abstraction that investigates the relationship between modernist utopianism and contemporary actuality. www.fieldclub.co.uk Pil and Galia Kollectiv, who have also curated the exhibition are London-based artists and run the xero, kline & coma gallery. Here they present a dialogue between two computers. The conversation opens with a simple text book problem in business studies. But gradually the language, mimicking the application of game theory in the business sector, becomes more abstract.
