Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää typenoksidien vähennysmahdollisuudet Stora Enson Varkauden tehtaiden sellutehtaalla ja voimalaitoksella. Tutkimuksessa käsiteltiin tehdasalueen suurimpia typenoksidien päästölähteitä: soodakattilaa, meesauunia, kuorikattilaa, öljykattilaa ja muovi-alumiinijakeen kaasutuslaitosta. Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin typenoksidipäästöjen syntymekanismit ja erilaisiin polttotekniikoihin soveltuvat typenoksidien vähennystekniikat. Varkauden tehtaiden typenoksidien vuosipäästö vuonna 2001 oli 836 tonnia. Kansallinen lainsäädäntö, kansainväliset sopimukset sekä paras käytettävissä oleva tekniikka (BAT) huomioiden selvitettiin kuhunkin kohteeseen parhaiten soveltuvat ratkaisut. Tutkimuksen perusteella laadittiin toimenpideohjelma, joka määrittelee suositeltavan toteutusjärjestyksen typenoksidien vähennystoimenpiteille. Toimenpideohjelman tärkeimpinä kriteereinä pidettiin vuonna 2004 tulevan uuden ympäristöluvan arvioituja luparajoja sekä toimenpiteiden kustannustehokkuutta. Toteutusjärjestyksessä ensimmäiseksi valittiin koeajojakson järjestäminen ajon optimoimiseksi kiertopetikattilalla ja toiseksi meesauunin ajon optimointi jatkuvatoimisen NOx-analysaattorin avulla. Seuraaviksi toimenpiteiksi ehdotettiin vertikaali-ilmajärjestelmän käyttöönottoa soodakattilalla sekä SNCR-järjestelmän asennusta kuorikattilalle. Saavutettava NOx-vähennys tulisi olemaan 10 – 45 % ja hinta 30 – 3573 EUR vähennettyä NOx-tonnia kohti. Tutkimuksen osana Ilmatieteen laitoksella teetetyn typenoksidien leviämisselvityksen mukaan Stora Enson tehtaiden NOx-päästöjen vaikutus Varkauden ilmanlaatuun on hyvin pieni. Suurin osa NOx-päästöistä aiheutuu liikenteestä.

Flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES) are widely used in academic institutions and laboratories for quality control to analyze inorganic elements in samples. However, these techniques have been observed to underperform in sample nebulization processes. Most of the samples processed through nebulization system are discarded, producing large volumes of waste. This study reports the treatment and reuse of the waste produced from ICP OES technique in a laboratory of analytical research at the Universidade Federal do Ceará, Brazil. The treatment of the waste was performed by the precipitation of elements using (NH4)2CO3. Subsequently, the supernatant solution can be discarded in accordance with CONAMA 430/2011. The precipitate produced from the treatment of residues can be reused as a potential sample in undergraduate qualitative analytical chemistry lab classes, providing students the opportunity to test a real sample.

The development of a multibody model of a motorbike engine cranktrain is presented in this work, with an emphasis on flexible component model reduction. A modelling methodology based upon the adoption of non-ideal joints at interface locations, and the inclusion of component flexibility, is developed: both are necessary tasks if one wants to capture dynamic effects which arise in lightweight, high-speed applications. With regard to the first topic, both a ball bearing model and a journal bearing model are implemented, in order to properly capture the dynamic effects of the main connections in the system: angular contact ball bearings are modelled according to a five-DOF nonlinear scheme in order to grasp the crankshaft main bearings behaviour, while an impedance-based hydrodynamic bearing model is implemented providing an enhanced operation prediction at the conrod big end locations. Concerning the second matter, flexible models of the crankshaft and the connecting rod are produced. The well-established Craig-Bampton reduction technique is adopted as a general framework to obtain reduced model representations which are suitable for the subsequent multibody analyses. A particular component mode selection procedure is implemented, based on the concept of Effective Interface Mass, allowing an assessment of the accuracy of the reduced models prior to the nonlinear simulation phase. In addition, a procedure to alleviate the effects of modal truncation, based on the Modal Truncation Augmentation approach, is developed. In order to assess the performances of the proposed modal reduction schemes, numerical tests are performed onto the crankshaft and the conrod models in both frequency and modal domains. A multibody model of the cranktrain is eventually assembled and simulated using a commercial software. Numerical results are presented, demonstrating the effectiveness of the implemented flexible model reduction techniques. The advantages over the conventional frequency-based truncation approach are discussed.

In the early stages of the development of Japan’s environmental policy, sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions, which seriously damage health, was the most important air pollution problem. In the second half of the 1960s and the first half of the 1970s, the measures against SOx emissions progressed quickly, and these emissions were reduced drastically. The most important factor of the reduction was the conversion to a low-sulfur fuel for large-scale fuel users, such as the electric power industry. However, industries started conversion to low-sulfur fuel not due to environmental concerns, but simply to reduce costs. Furthermore, the interaction among the various interests of the electric power industry, oil refineries, the central government, local governments, and citizens over the energy and environmental policies led to the measures against SOx emissions by fuel conversion.

Chinese government commits to reach its peak carbon emissions before 2030, which requires China to implement new policies. Using a CGE model, this study conducts simulation studies on the functions of an energy tax and a carbon tax and analyzes their effects on macro-economic indices. The Chinese economy is affected at an acceptable level by the two taxes. GDP will lose less than 0.8% with a carbon tax of 100, 50, or 10 RMB/ton CO2 or 5% of the delivery price of an energy tax. Thus, the loss of real disposable personal income is smaller. Compared with implementing a single tax, a combined carbon and energy tax induces more emission reductions with relatively smaller economic costs. With these taxes, the domestic competitiveness of energy intensive industries is improved. Additionally, we found that the sooner such taxes are launched, the smaller the economic costs and the more significant the achieved emission reductions.

This work provides the development of an antenna for satellite communications onboard systems based on the recommendations ITU-R S.580-6 [1] and ITU-R S.465-5 [2]. The antenna consists of printed elements grouped in an array, working in a frequency band from 7.25 up to 8.4 GHz (15% of bandwidth). In this working band, transmission and reception are included simultaneously. The antenna reaches a gain about 31 dBi, has a radiation pattern with a beam width smaller than 10oand dual circular polarization. In this paper, we analyze the performance of several well-known pattern recognition and dimensionality reduction techniques when applied to mass-spectrometry data for odor biometric identification. Motivated by the successful results of previous works capturing the odor from other parts of the body, this work attempts to evaluate the feasibility of identifying people by the odor emanated from the hands. By formulating this task according to a machine learning scheme, the problem is identified with a small-sample-size supervised classification problem in which the input data is formed by mass spectrograms from the hand odor of 13 subjects captured in different sessions. The high dimensionality of the data makes it necessary to apply feature selection and extraction techniques together with a simple classifier in order to improve the generalization capabilities of the model. Our experimental results achieve recognition rates over 85% which reveals that there exists discriminatory information in the hand odor and points at body odor as a promising biometric identifier.

This thesis attempts to find the least-cost strategy to reduce CO2 emission by replacing coal by other energy sources for electricity generation in the context of the proposed EPA’s regulation on CO2 emissions from existing coal-fired power plants. An ARIMA model is built to forecast coal consumption for electricity generation and its CO2 emissions in Michigan from 2016 to 2020. CO2 emission reduction costs are calculated under three emission reduction scenarios- reduction to 17%, 30% and 50% below the 2005 emission level. The impacts of Production Tax Credit (PTC) and the intermittency of renewable energy are also discussed. The results indicate that in most cases natural gas will be the best alternative to coal for electricity generation to realize CO2 reduction goals; if the PTC for wind power will continue after 2015, a natural gas and wind combination approach could be the best strategy based on the least-cost criterion.

Työn tarkoituksena oli selvittää Alstom Finland Oy:n pääasiakkaiden ympäristö-lupatilanne sekä tarkastella, miten Alstomin toimittamat hiukkastenpuhdistuslait-teet täyttävät muuttavat lainsäädännön vaatimukset. Lisäksi työssä arvioitiin lai-tosten hiukkaspäästöjen vähentämisestä syntyvää savukaasunpuhdistuslaitteiden investointitarvetta. Työn teoriaosuus sisältää katsauksen ympäristölupakäytäntöön sekä Valtioneu-voston asetuksiin, jotka koskevat laitosten hiukkaspäästöjä. Lisäksi työssä on kä-sitelty parhaan käytettävissä olevan tekniikan mukaisia hiukkaspäästörajoja ja tekniikoita sekä hiukkasten muodostumista että raskasmetallien sitoutumista hiukkasiin. Kaikkiaan työssä mukana olevia laitoksia oli 49, joista tarkemmin tarkasteltiin 12 laitosta. Suurin osa laitoksista ei ollut saanut tai hakenut ympäristönsuojelulain mukaista ympäristölupaa, joten niillä on velvollisuus hakea lupaa siirtymäsään-nöksen mukaisesti vuoden 2004 loppuun mennessä. Tarkemmassa tarkastelussa olevien laitosten hiukkaspäästömittaustuloksia vertailtiin nykyisiin sekä uu-siin/oletettuihin ympäristölupien hiukkaspäästörajoihin. Tarkastelussa mukana olevasta seitsemästä soodakattilalaitoksesta, joilla ei vielä ollut uutta ympäristölu-paa, 43 % ylitti arvioidun uuden luparajan 50 mg/m3(n):ssa ja kolmesta meesauu-nia käyttävästä laitoksesta yksi sekä viidestä muusta kattilasta kaksi.

The objective in this Master’s Thesis was to determine VOC emissions from veneer drying in softwood plywood manufacturing. Emissions from plywood industry have become an important factor because of the tightened regulations worldwide. In this Thesis is researched quality and quantity of the VOCs from softwood veneer drying. One of the main objectives was to find out suitable cleaning techniques for softwood VOC emissions. In introduction part is presented veneer drying machines, wood mechanical and chemical properties. VOC control techniques and specified VOC limits are introduced also in the introduction part. Plywood mills have not had interest to VOC emissions previously nevertheless nowadays plywood mills worldwide must consider reduction of the emissions. This Thesis includes measuring of emissions from softwood veneer dryer, analyzation of measured test results and reviewing results. Different air conditions inside of the dryer were considered during planning of the measurements. Results of the emissions measurements were compared to the established laws. Results from this Thesis were softwood veneer dryer emissions in different air conditions. Emission control techniques were also studied for softwood veneer dryer emissions for further specific research.
