This study examines the application of digital ecosystems concepts to a biological ecosystem simulation problem. The problem involves the use of a digital ecosystem agent to optimize the accuracy of a second digital ecosystem agent, the biological ecosystem simulation. The study also incorporates social ecosystems, with a technological solution design subsystem communicating with a science subsystem and simulation software developer subsystem to determine key characteristics of the biological ecosystem simulation. The findings show similarities between the issues involved in digital ecosystem collaboration and those occurring when digital ecosystems interact with biological ecosystems. The results also suggest that even precise semantic descriptions and comprehensive ontologies may be insufficient to describe agents in enough detail for use within digital ecosystems, and a number of solutions to this problem are proposed.

With the introduction of the PCEHR (Personally Controlled Electronic Health Record), the Australian public is being asked to accept greater responsibility for the management of their health information. However, the implementation of the PCEHR has occasioned poor adoption rates underscored by criticism from stakeholders with concerns about transparency, accountability, privacy, confidentiality, governance, and limited capabilities. This study adopts an ethnographic lens to observe how information is created and used during the patient journey and the social factors impacting on the adoption of the PCEHR at the micro-level in order to develop a conceptual model that will encourage the sharing of patient information within the cycle of care. Objective: This study aims to firstly, establish a basic understanding of healthcare professional attitudes toward a national platform for sharing patient summary information in the form of a PCEHR. Secondly, the studies aims to map the flow of patient related information as it traverses a patient’s personal cycle of care. Thus, an ethnographic approach was used to bring a “real world” lens to information flow in a series of case studies in the Australian healthcare system to discover themes and issues that are important from the patient’s perspective. Design: Qualitative study utilising ethnographic case studies. Setting: Case studies were conducted at primary and allied healthcare professionals located in Brisbane Queensland between October 2013 and July 2014. Results: In the first dimension, it was identified that healthcare professionals’ concerns about trust and medico-legal issues related to patient control and information quality, and the lack of clinical value available with the PCEHR emerged as significant barriers to use. The second dimension of the study which attempted to map patient information flow identified information quality issues, clinical workflow inefficiencies and interoperability misconceptions resulting in duplication of effort, unnecessary manual processes, data quality and integrity issues and an over reliance on the understanding and communication skills of the patient. Conclusion: Opportunities for process efficiencies, improved data quality and increased patient safety emerge with the adoption of an appropriate information sharing platform. More importantly, large scale eHealth initiatives must be aligned with the value proposition of individual stakeholders in order to achieve widespread adoption. Leveraging an Australian national eHealth infrastructure and the PCEHR we offer a practical example of a service driven digital ecosystem suitable for co-creating value in healthcare.

This paper proposes to promote autonomy in digital ecosystems so that it provides agents with information to improve the behavior of the digital ecosystem in terms of stability. This work proposes that, in digital ecosystems, autonomous agents can provide fundamental services and information. The final goal is to run the ecosystem, generate novel conditions and let agents exploit them. A set of evaluation measures must be defined as well. We want to provide an outline of some global indicators, such as heterogeneity and diversity, and establish relationships between agent behavior and these global indicators to fully understand interactions between agents, and to understand the dependence and autonomy relations that emerge between the interacting agents. Individual variations, interaction dependencies, and environmental factors are determinants of autonomy that would be considered. The paper concludes with a discussion of situations when autonomy is a milestone

Este documento tiene por objeto servir de guía para el avance de la industria digital colombiana, mediante la implementación de una propuesta en el modelo de desarrollo de aplicaciones para medios digitales en Televisión -que ha sido tan exitosa en otros medios-, como complemento a la política pública de tecnología en el país, y a su vez, -en un objetivo que apenas inicia y del que este trabajo es un primer atisbo conceptual-, se empiece a discutir la idea de que el Derecho deba someterse a otras ciencias (La económica o la administrativa), con el fin de darle nivel de igualdad a ellas y mostrarlo como una herramienta de inicio para generar instituciones de las que las otras ciencias dependen, partiendo de la base institucional del Estado Social de Derecho.

[EN]In this paper we analyze the use of tablets in the classroom and the new key technologies based on mobile learning; describing their potential in the academic activities. We start always to identify and describe the key trends in educational technology in the field of teaching and learning and as always start from the last NMC Horizon Report 2014. So we will see how our university experience in the field of law, we used the methodological synergy and integration of the flipped classroom, apps design and even the gamification as new teaching tools of the digital ecosystem.

An on-line survey of experts was conducted to solicit their views on policy priorities in the area of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the Caribbean. The experts considered the goal to “promote teacher training in the use of ICTs in the classroom” to be the highest priority, followed by goals to “reduce the cost of broadband services” and “promote the use of ICT in emergency and disaster prevention, preparedness and response.” Goals in the areas of cybercrime, e-commerce, egovernment, universal service funds, consumer protection, and on-line privacy rounded out the top 10. Some of the lowest ranked goals were those related to coordinating the management of infrastructure changes. These included the switchover for digital terrestrial television (DTT) and digital FM radio, cloud computing for government ICT, the introduction of satellite-based internet services, and the installation of content distribution networks (CDNs). Initiatives aimed at using ICT to promote specific industries, or specific means of promoting the digital economy, tended toward the centre of the rankings. Thus, a general pattern emerged which elevated the importance of focusing on how ICT is integrated into the broader society, with economic issues a lower priority, and concerns about coordination on infrastructure issues lower still.

Ekosysteemi-termin käyttö on yleistynyt viime aikoina yritysmaailmassa, mutta sitä käytetään eri tavoin eri lähteissä ja asianyhteyksissä eikä käsitteelle ole olemassa vakiintunutta määritelmää. Yritykset toimivat ekosysteemissä vuorovaikutuksessa, joten hyötyäkseen systeemistä tulee niiden tunnistaa ja ymmärtää kaikki muut systeemin osat ja toimijat. Tämä olisi helpompaa oikeellisen terminologian avulla. Kandidaatintyön tavoitteena on selvittää, missä eri yhteyksissä ekosysteemitermiä käytetään ja löytyykö termille yksiselitteistä määritelmää. Työssä esitellään eri lähteiden käyttämiä määritelmiä ekosysteemeille puhuttaessa yritysten välisistä verkostoista. Tutkimuksessa keskitytään kolmeen pääsysteemiin: liiketoiminnan ekosysteemiin, teolliseen ekosysteemiin sekä digitaaliseen ekosysteemiin. Lisäksi tarkastellaan muutamia pienempiä, sekä itsenäisiä että johonkin pääekosysteemiin pohjautuvia, ekosysteemikokonaisuuksia. Työ on toteutettu kirjallisuuskatsauksena. Verkostoissa kukin toimija ajaa omia etuuksiaan, kun taas ekosysteemissä kaikilla on yhteinen päämäärä, jota tavoitellaan yhdessä. Ekosysteemit ovat verkostoja laajempia ja ne pystyvät korvaamaan puuttuvia tekijöitä itsenäisesti. Keskenään ekosysteemit eroavat puolestaan toimijoiden ja niiden välisten virtojen laadun osalta. Lisäksi eri systeemeissä on erilaiset toimintaperiaatteet. Kaikki ekosysteemit kuitenkin perustuvat yhteistyöhön ja vuorovaikutukseen, joiden avulla luodaan arvoa. Myös uudet innovaatiot ja kustannustehokkuus yhdistävät kaikkia systeemejä. Ei kuitenkaan ole olemassa yksiselitteistä määritelmää, joka pätisi kussakin tilanteissa, mutta eri asianyhteyksiin liitettynä ekosysteemillä tarkoitetaan ydinajatukseltaan samaa asiaa.

The Digital Practice Ecosystem is a network of professional architectural, engineering and contracting firms, government agencies and professional bodies, academic, educational, and research institutions that have the shared goal of fostering changes in the construction industry through applications of digital practice. Changing the process of designing and constructing buildings using digital models will improve quality and efficiency and reduce costs allowing completion on time and on budget.

Vegetation phenology is an important indicator of climate change and climate variability and it is strongly connected to biospheric–atmospheric gas exchange. We aimed to evaluate the applicability of phenological information derived from digital imagery for the interpretation of CO2 exchange measurements. For the years 2005–2007 we analyzed seasonal phenological development of 2 temperate mixed forests using tower-based imagery from standard RGB cameras. Phenological information was jointly analyzed with gross primary productivity (GPP) derived from net ecosystem exchange data. Automated image analysis provided reliable information on vegetation developmental stages of beech and ash trees covering all seasons. A phenological index derived from image color values was strongly correlated with GPP, with a significant mean time lag of several days for ash trees and several weeks for beech trees in early summer (May to mid-July). Leaf emergence dates for the dominant tree species partly explained temporal behaviour of spring GPP but were also masked by local meteorological conditions. We conclude that digital cameras at flux measurement sites not only provide an objective measure of the physiological state of a forest canopy at high temporal and spatial resolutions, but also complement CO2 and water exchange measurements, improving our knowledge of ecosystem processes.

MPEG-M is a suite of ISO/IEC standards (ISO/IEC 23006) that has been developed under the auspices of Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). MPEG-M, also known as Multimedia Service Platform Technologies (MSPT), facilitates a collection of multimedia middleware APIs and elementary services as well as service aggregation so that service providers can offer users a plethora of innovative services by extending current IPTV technology toward the seamless integration of personal content creation and distribution, e-commerce, social networks and Internet distribution of digital media.

The objective of D6.1 is to make the Ecosystem software platform with underlying Software Repository, Digital Library and Media Archive available to the degree, that the RAGE project can start collecting content in the form of software assets, and documents of various media types. This paper describes the current state of the Ecosystem as of month 12 of the project, and documents the structure of the Ecosystem, individual components, integration strategies, and overall approach. The deliverable itself is the deployment of the described components, which is now available to collect and curate content. Whilst this version is not yet feature complete, full realization is expected within the next few months. Following this development, WP6 will continue to add features driven by the business models to be defined by WP7 later on in the project.

In this paper we introduce a novel design for a translational medical research ecosystem. Translational medical research is an emerging field of work, which aims to bridge the gap between basic medical science research and clinical research/patient care. We analyze the key challenges of digital ecosystems for translational research, based on real world scenarios posed by the Lab for Translational Research at the Harvard Medical School and the Genomics Research Centre of the Griffith University, and show how traditional IT approaches fail to fulfill these challenges. We then introduce our design for a translational research ecosystem. Several key contributions are made: A novel approach to managing ad-hoc research ecosystems is introduced; a new security approach for translational research is proposed which allows each participating site to retain control over its data and define its own policies to ensure legal and ethical compliance; and a design for a novel interactive access control framework which allows users to easily share data, while adhering to their organization's policies is presented.

Over the past four decades, the state of Hawaii has developed a system of eleven Marine Life Conservation Districts (MLCDs) to conserve and replenish marine resources around the state. Initially established to provide opportunities for public interaction with the marine environment, these MLCDs vary in size, habitat quality, and management regimes, providing an excellent opportunity to test hypotheses concerning marine protected area (MPA) design and function using multiple discreet sampling units. NOAA/NOS/NCCOS/Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment’s Biogeography Team developed digital benthic habitat maps for all MLCD and adjacent habitats. These maps were used to evaluate the efficacy of existing MLCDs for biodiversity conservation and fisheries replenishment, using a spatially explicit stratified random sampling design. Coupling the distribution of habitats and species habitat affinities using GIS technology elucidates species habitat utilization patterns at scales that are commensurate with ecosystem processes and is useful in defining essential fish habitat and biologically relevant boundaries for MPAs. Analysis of benthic cover validated the a priori classification of habitat types and provided justification for using these habitat strata to conduct stratified random sampling and analyses of fish habitat utilization patterns. Results showed that the abundance and distribution of species and assemblages exhibited strong correlations with habitat types. Fish assemblages in the colonized and uncolonized hardbottom habitats were found to be most similar among all of the habitat types. Much of the macroalgae habitat sampled was macroalgae growing on hard substrate, and as a result showed similarities with the other hardbottom assemblages. The fish assemblages in the sand habitats were highly variable but distinct from the other habitat types. Management regime also played an important role in the abundance and distribution of fish assemblages. MLCDs had higher values for most fish assemblage characteristics (e.g. biomass, size, diversity) compared with adjacent fished areas and Fisheries Management Areas (FMAs) across all habitat types. In addition, apex predators and other targeted resources species were more abundant and larger in the MLCDs, illustrating the effectiveness of these closures in conserving fish populations. Habitat complexity, quality, size and level of protection from fishing were important determinates of MLCD effectiveness with respect to their associated fish assemblages. (PDF contains 217 pages)
