A conducting layer with the conductivity of 1.2 Omega(-1)cm(-1) stripped in a solvent from KrF-laser-irradiated polyimide thin film is taken as a sample to determine the microstructure of the conducting layer. Fourier-transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies show the formation of the carbon-rich clusters after irradiation. The element analysis gives the atomic ratio of C:H:N:O for the carbon-rich cluster as 60:20:3:1. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction indicates that the conducting layer is mainly amorphous carbon with a small amount of the short-range ordered carbon-rich clusters. This study suggests a structural model with three-layer carbon sheets linked together in a random fashion for the short-range ordered carbon-rich clusters. The interplanar spacing is 3.87 Angstrom and the layer diameter 25 Angstrom. The transport model of variable-range hopping in three dimensions is used to explain the conducting behavior of the conducting layer. In our case, the short-range ordered carbon-rich clusters are assumed to be conducting islands dispersed in the amorphous carbon-rich cluster matrix.

With its highly fluctuating ion production matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) poses many practical challenges for its application in mass spectrometry. Instrument tuning and quantitative ion abundance measurements using ion signal alone depend on a stable ion beam. Liquid MALDI matrices have been shown to be a promising alternative to the commonly used solid matrices. Their application in areas where a stable ion current is essential has been discussed but only limited data have been provided to demonstrate their practical use and advantages in the formation of stable MALDI ion beams. In this article we present experimental data showing high MALDI ion beam stability over more than two orders of magnitude at high analytical sensitivity (low femtomole amount prepared) for quantitative peptide abundance measurements and instrument tuning in a MALDI Q-TOF mass spectrometer. Samples were deposited on an inexpensive conductive hydrophobic surface and shrunk to droplets <10 nL in size. By using a sample droplet <10 nL it was possible to acquire data from a single irradiated spot for roughly 10,000 shots with little variation in ion signal intensity at a laser repetition rate of 5-20 Hz.

The distribution of flux of carbon-bearing cations over nanopatterned surfaces with conductive nanotips and nonconductive nanoislands is simulated using the Monte-Carlo technique. It is shown that the ion current is focused to nanotip surfaces when the negative substrate bias is low and only slightly perturbed at higher substrate biases. In the low-bias case, the mean horizontal ion displacement caused by the nanotip electric field exceeds 10 nm. However, at higher substrate biases, this value reduces down to 2 nm. In the nonconductive nanopattern case, the ion current distribution is highly nonuniform, with distinctive zones of depleted current density around the nanoislands. The simulation results suggest the efficient means to control ion fluxes in plasma-aided nanofabrication of ordered nanopatterns, such as nanotip microemitter structures and quantum dot or nanoparticle arrays. © World Scientific Publishing Company.

This review will summarize the significant body of research within the field of electrical methods of controlling the growth of microorganisms. We examine the progress from early work using current to kill bacteria in static fluids to more realistic treatment scenarios such as flow-through systems designed to imitate the human urinary tract. Additionally, the electrical enhancement of biocide and antibiotic efficacy will be examined alongside recent innovations including the biological applications of acoustic energy systems to prevent bacterial surface adherence. Particular attention will be paid to the electrical engineering aspects of previous work, such as electrode composition, quantitative electrical parameters and the conductive medium used. Scrutiny of published systems from an electrical engineering perspective will help to facilitate improved understanding of the methods, devices and mechanisms that have been effective in controlling bacteria, as well as providing insights and strategies to improve the performance of such systems and develop the next generation of antimicrobial bioelectric materials.

Cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) were extracted by acid hydrolysis from cotton microfibrils and nanocomposites with polyaniline doped with dodecyl benzenesulphonic acid (PANI-DBSA) were obtained by in situ polymerization of aniline onto CNF. The ratios between DBSA to aniline and aniline to oxidant were varied in situ and the nanocomposites characterized by four probe DC electrical conductivity, ultraviolet-visible-near infrared (UV-Vis - NIR) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopies and X-ray diffraction (XRD). FTIR and UV-Vis/NIR characterization confirmed the polymerization of PANI onto CNF surfaces. Electrical conductivity of about 10 -1 S/cm was achieved for the composites; conductivity was mostly independent of DBSA/aniline (between 2 and 4) and aniline/oxidant (between 1 and 5) molar ratios. X-ray patterns of the samples showed crystalline peaks characteristic of cellulose I for CNF samples, and a mixture of both characteristic peaks of PANI and CNF for the nanocomposites. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) characterization corroborated the abovementioned results showing that PANI coated the surface of the nanofibrils. The behaviour of a polymer depends strongly on the length- and time scale as well as on the temperature rnat which it is probed. In this work, I describe investigations of polymer surfaces using scanning probe rnmicroscopy with heatable probes. With these probes, surfaces can be heated within seconds down to rnmicroseconds. I introduce experiments for the local and fast determination of glass transition and melting rntemperatures. I developed a method which allows the determination of glass transition and melting rntemperatures on films with thicknesses below 100 nm: A background measurement on the substrate was rnperformed. The resulting curve was subtracted from the measurement on the polymer film. The rndifferential measurement on polystyrene films with thicknesses between 35 nm and 160 nm showed rncharacteristic signals at 95 ± 1 °C, in accordance with the glass transition of polystyrene. Pressing heated rnprobes into polymer films causes plastic deformation. Nanometer sized deformations are currently rninvestigated in novel concepts for high density data storage. A suitable medium for such a storage system rnhas to be easily indentable on one hand, but on the other hand it also has to be very stable towards rnsurface induced wear. For developing such a medium I investigated a new approach: A comparably soft rnmaterial, namely polystyrene, was protected with a thin but very hard layer made of plasma polymerized rnnorbornene. The resulting bilayered media were tested for surface stability and deformability. I showed rnthat the bilayered material combines the deformability of polystyrene with the surface stability of the rnplasma polymer, and that the material therefore is a very good storage medium. In addition we rninvestigated the glass transition temperature of polystyrene at timescales of 10 µs and found it to be rnapprox. 220 °C. The increase of this characteristic temperature of the polymer results from the short time rnat which the polymer was probed and reflects the well-known time-temperature superposition principle. rnHeatable probes were also used for the characterization of silverazide filled nanocapsules. The use of rnheatable probes allowed determining the decomposition temperature of the capsules from few rnnanograms of material. The measured decomposition temperatures ranged from 180 °C to 225 °C, in rnaccordance with literature values. The investigation of small amounts of sample was necessary due to the rnlimited availability of the material. Furthermore, investigating larger amounts of the capsules using rnconventional thermal gravimetric analysis could lead to contamination or even damage of the instrument. rnBesides the analysis of material parameters I used the heatable probes for the local thermal rndecomposition of pentacene precursor material in order to form nanoscale conductive structures. Here, rnthe thickness of the precursor layer was important for complete thermal decomposition. rnAnother aspect of my work was the investigation of redox active polymers - Poly-10-(4-vinylbenzyl)-10H-rnphenothiazine (PVBPT)- for data storage. Data is stored by changing the local conductivity of the material rnby applying a voltage between tip and surface. The generated structures were stable for more than 16 h. It rnwas shown that the presence of water is essential for succesfull patterning.

This article summarizes research on the application of a conductive cement paste as an anode in the now classical technique of electrochemical extraction of chlorides applied to a concrete structural element by spraying the paste on the surface of a concrete structural element, a pillar. Sprayed conductive cement paste, by adding graphite powder, is particularly useful to treat sizable vertical surfaces such are structural supports. Outcomes indicate that this kind of anode not only provides electrochemical chloride removal with similar efficiency, but also is able to retain moisture even without the use of a continuous dampening system.

This paper is concerned with the surface profiles of a strip after rigid bodies with serrated (saw-teeth) surfaces indent the strip and are subsequently removed. Plane-strain conditions are assumed. This has application in roughness transfer of final metal forming process. The effects of the semi-angle of the teeth, the depth of indentation and the friction on the contact surface on the profile are considered.
