Franches-Montagnes is the only native horse breed in Switzerland, therefore special efforts should be made for ensuring its survival. The objectives of this study were to characterize the structure of this population as well as genetic variability with pedigree data, conformation traits and molecular markers. Studies were focused to clarify if this population is composed of a heavy- and a light-type subpopulation. Extended pedigree records of 3-year-old stallions (n = 68) and mares (n = 108) were available. Evaluations of body conformation traits as well as pedigree data and molecular markers did not support the two-subpopulation hypothesis. The generation interval ranged from 7.8 to 9.3 years. The complete generation equivalent was high (>12). The number of effective ancestors varied between 18.9 and 20.1, whereof 50% of the genetic variability was attributed to seven of them. Genetic contribution of Warmblood horses ranged from 36% to 42% and that of Coldblood horses from 4% to 6%. The average inbreeding coefficient reached 6%. Inbreeding effective population size was 114.5 when the average increase of the inbreeding coefficient per year since 1910 was taken. Our results suggest that bottleneck situations occurred because of selection of a small number of sire lines. Promotion of planned matings between parents that are less related is recommended in order to avoid a reduction of the genetic diversity.

Background: Several factors may influence kinetic data measurements, including body conformation and body mass. In addition, gender differences in gait pattern have been observed in healthy humans. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the kinetic and temporospatial parameters in clinically healthy male and female cats using a pressure-sensitive walkway. Eighteen crossbreed adult cats were divided into two groups: G1 had ten male cats (nine neutered) aged from 1 to 4 years and body mass 3.1-6.8 kg; G2 had eight spayed female cats, aged from 1 to 6 years and body mass 3.3-4.75 kg. The data from the first five valid trials were collected for each cat. A trial was considered valid if the cat maintained a velocity between 0.54-0.74 m/s and acceleration from -0.20 to 0.20 m/s2. The peak vertical force (PVF), vertical impulse (VI), gait cycle time, stance time, swing time, stride length, and percentage body weight distribution among the four limbs were determined. In addition, the lengths of each forelimb and each hind limb were measured using a tape with the animal standing. Results: No significant differences were observed in each group in either the forelimbs or the hind limbs or between the left and right sides for any of the variables. For both groups, the PVF (%BW), the VI, and the percentage body weight distribution were higher at the forelimbs than the hind limbs. The stride length was larger for males; however, the other kinetic and temporospatial variables did not show any statistically significant differences between the groups. The lengths of the forelimbs and hind limbs were larger in the male cats. There was a significant moderate positive correlation between the stride length and the length of the limbs. Conclusions: In conclusion, the only difference observed between male and female cats was the stride length, and this was due to the greater body size of male cats. This difference did not affect other temporospatial or kinetics variables. © 2013 Verdugo et al.; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.

Based on the concept that horses have balanced symmetry between its anatomical regions, the aim of this study was to introduce a method of assessing the balance of equines through body proportions. Altogether twelve linear measurements, using metric tape, were measured in 234 horses Quarter Horses for evidence of barrel racing. From these measurements were built nine body proportions, each one given by the ratio of two specific measures, and the effects of sex, weight, age and degree of blood on the balance were evaluated. To check the significance tests we used the F statistic, considering P<0.05. It was found that the linear measurements ML2, ML3 and ML5 were mainly responsible for the disproportionality of the horses evaluated. The effect of sex was significant (P<0.05) for four proportions (R1, R3, R4 and R9) and females were more distant from the concept of balance than males.

Several studies have highlighted the importance of the correlation between body size and body weight. The objective of this study was to characterize the morphological structure of New Zealand White rabbits, phenotypically correlating body shape traits with body weight. For this purpose, forty rabbits, weaned at 35 days of age, were distributed in a completely randomized experimental design, consisting of two treatments (female and male) with twenty replicates each. At 88 days of age, animals were weighed to determine body weight (B W), and then the following body measures were determined using a measuring tape: ventral perimeter, thoracic perimeter, wither height, croup height, ear length, and body length. Average BW was 2,220 g, and average body measures were 34.4 cm, 28.4 cm, 8.95 cm, 10.4 cm, 10.6 cm, and 36 cm respectively. No significcmt differences between sexes were found relative to the studied traits. There was no negative correlation between body measures and BW, and, except for body length, all measures were significantly correlated with BW, with ear length and ventral perimeter presenting the highest values.

The structural effects of a representative disallowed conformation of Aib on the 3(10)-helical fold of an octapeptidomimetic are explored. The 1D (H-1, C-13) & 2D NMR, FT-IR and CD data reveal that the octapeptide 1, adopts a 3(10)-helical conformation in solution, as it does in its crystal structure. The C-terminal methyl carboxylate (CO2Me) of 1 was modified into an 1,3-oxazine (Oxa) functional group in the peptidomimetic 2. This modification results in the stabilization of the backbone of the C-terminal Aib (Aib*-Oxa) of 2, in a conformation (phi, =180, 0) that is natively disallowed to Aib. Consequent to the presence of this natively disallowed conformation, the 3(10)-helical fold is not disrupted in the body of the peptidomimetic 2. But the structural distortions that do occur in 2 are primarily in residues in the immediate vicinity of the natively disallowed conformation, rather than in the whole peptide body. Non-native electronic effects resulting from modifications in backbone functional groups can be at the origin of stabilizing residues in natively disallowed conformations. With the wide application of rare earth in agriculture, medicament, especially the application of Gd-DTPA as nuclear magnetic resonance image reagent in clinical practice([1]), the studies on the toxicology in biological body, as well as the study on the use as informative probes instead of divalent calcium ion in biological and biochemical research have attracted intensive concern([2]). Phospholipids bilayers have served as a model of biomembrane in the last two decades. The effects of metal ions on the conformation of polar headgroup of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) bilayers have been reported([3]). Sphingomyelin is major component of several biological tissues such as brain and nerve cells and has identical polar headgroup to DPPC. The interaction of metal ions with sphingomyelin bilayer remains nonrevealed. This note presents the results of the study on this aspect.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between the 3-dimensional (3-D) motion pattern of the caudal lumbar and lumbosacral portions of the canine vertebral column and the morphology of vertebrae, facet joints, and intervertebral disks. SAMPLE POPULATION: Vertebral columns of 9 German Shepherd Dogs and 16 dogs of other breeds with similar body weights and body conditions. PROCEDURE: Different morphometric parameters of the vertebral column were assessed by computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging. Anatomic conformation and the 3-D motion pattern were compared, and correlation coefficients were calculated. RESULTS: Total range of motion for flexion and extension was mainly associated with the facet joint angle, the facet joint angle difference between levels of the vertebral column in the transverse plane on CT images, disk height, and lever arm length. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Motion is a complex process that is influenced by the entire 3-D conformation of the lumbar portion of the vertebral column. In vivo dynamic measurements of the 3-D motion pattern of the lumbar and lumbosacral portions of the vertebral column will be necessary to further assess biomechanics that could lead to disk degeneration in dogs.

The chemotherapeutic drug Taxol is known to interact within a specific site on β-tubulin. Although the general location of the site has been defined by photoaffinity labeling and electron crystallography, the original data were insufficient to make an absolute determination of the bound conformation. We have now correlated the crystallographic density with analysis of Taxol conformations and have found the unique solution to be a T-shaped Taxol structure. This T-shaped or butterfly structure is optimized within the β-tubulin site and exhibits functional similarity to a portion of the B9-B10 loop in the α-tubulin subunit. The model provides structural rationalization for a sizeable body of Taxol structure–activity relationship data, including binding affinity, photoaffinity labeling, and acquired mutation in human cancer cells.
