The question concerning the circumstances under which it is advantageous for a company to outsource certain information systems functions has been a controversial issue for the last decade. While opponents emphasize the risks of outsourcing based on the loss of strategic potentials and increased transaction costs, proponents emphasize the strategic benefits of outsourcing and high potentials of cost-savings. This paper brings together both views by examining the conditions under which both the strategic potentials as well as savings in production and transaction costs of developing and maintaining software applications can better be achieved in-house as opposed to by an external vendor. We develop a theoretical framework from three complementary theories and test it empirically based on a mail survey of 139 German companies. The results show that insourcing is more cost efficient and advantageous in creating strategic benefits through IS if the provision of application services requires a high amount of firm specific human assets. These relationships, however, are partially moderated by differences in the trustworthiness and intrinsic motivation of internal versus external IS professionals. Moreover, capital shares with an external vendor can lower the risk of high transaction costs as well the risk of loosing the strategic opportunities of an IS.

Recent developments in the factory floor technologies together with the widespread use of TCP/IP and the Internet are increasing the eagerness to support a new wide class of devices and applications, such as industrial multimedia applications, in factory floor networks. This paper presents how this new field of applications can be put into practice, via a manufacturing cell field trial being implemented. This manufacturing automation field trial involves the use of traditional distributed computer control systems and 'factory-floor-oriented' multimedia (e.g. voice, video) application services.

The goal of the this paper is to show that the DGPS data Internet service we designed and developed provides campus-wide real time access to Differential GPS (DGPS) data and, thus, supports precise outdoor navigation. First we describe the developed distributed system in terms of architecture (a three tier client/server application), services provided (real time DGPS data transportation from remote DGPS sources and campus wide data dissemination) and transmission modes implemented (raw and frame mode over TCP and UDP). Then we present and discuss the results obtained and, finally, we draw some conclusions.

Työn tavoitteena oli arvioida ja vertailla kaupallisia sovelluskehyksiä. Lähtökohtana oli TietoEnatorin Telecom-yksikön sovelluskehityksen vaatimukset ja tarpeet. Ensin selvitettiin sovelluskehysten perusteoriaa ja käsitteistöä kirjallisuuden avulla. Arviointikriteerit valittiin liiketoiminnallisten ja teknisten tekijöiden perusteella. Tuotteiden vertailussa otettiin huomioon myös Telecom-yksikön asiakaskunnan tarpeet ja vaatimukset. Vertailu tehtiin laajennettavaan päätöspuuhun pohjautuvalla menetelmällä. Lopuksi arvioitiin tutkimuksessa käytettyä vertailumenetelmää.Sovelluskehysmarkkinoilla on tarjolla tällä hetkellä lukuisia erilaisia kaupallisia sovelluskehyksiä. Sovellusten kehittäjät rakentavat räätälöityjä sovelluksia sovelluskehysten runkojen ja uudelleenkäytettävien elementtien avulla. Sovelluskehyksen kohdealue voi rajoittua tiettyyn toimialaan tai vaihtoehtoisesti se voi olla yleinen, horisontaalisesti laajemman alueen kattava. Valikoima on myös huomattava teknisten ominaisuuksien osalta. Ongelmalliseksi sovelluskehysten vertailun tekeekin niiden monimuotoisuus ja käyttökohteiden laajuus. Sovelluskehyksiä voidaan kuitenkin käyttää tehokkaasti perinteisemmän ohjelmistokehityksen vaihtoehtona, mikäli valmista ohjelmarunkoa ja uudelleenkäytettäviä osia osataan oikein hyödyntää.Vertailun tuloksena saatiin ehdokaslistalle kaksi sovelluskehystä, joiden käyttöä voidaan suositella Telecom-yksikölle.

Työssä on selvitetty soveltuvatko maailman johtavien ECM (Enterprise Content Management)-toimittajien järjestelmät palvelualustaksi dokumenttien hallinnan sovelluspalvelulle. Sovelluspalvelulla tarkoitetaan palvelutoimittajan (Application Service Provider, ASP) tiloissa toimivia sovelluksia, joita tarjotaan palveluna asiakkaille tietoverkon yli. Selvitystä varten työssä on kerätty tärkeimmät palvelualustaan kohdistuvat vaatimukset. Integrointivaatimusten tunnistaminen oli työn tärkein tavoite. Integroitavuuden lisäksi työssä on tutkittu sovelluspalvelumallista syntyviä erityisvaatimuksia. Vaatimusten keruu ja vaatimusten pohjalta tehty ominaisuuskartoitus ovat osa palvelualustan suunnittelua. Ominaisuuskartoituksessa vaatimuksista on laadittu laaja kyselylomake ja pyydetty valituilta toimittajilta siihen vastaukset. Saatuja vastauksia on peilattu asetettuihin vaatimuksiin. Tehtyjen havaintojen pohjalta on esitetty soveltuvuusarvio tutkittujen järjestelmien soveltuvuudesta tarpeita vastaavaksi sovelluspalvelualustaksi. Lopputuloksena on todettu, että useimpien järjestelmien soveltuvuus perustasolla on hyvä. Yksittäisiä selkeitä puutteita kuitenkin tunnistettiin. Integrointivaatimukset täyttyvät pääosin hyvin, mutta erityisesti tietoturvassa havaittiin puutteita.

Advancements in cloud computing have enabled the proliferation of distributed applications, which require management and control of multiple services. However, without an efficient mechanism for scaling services in response to changing workload conditions, such as number of connected users, application performance might suffer, leading to violations of Service Level Agreements (SLA) and possible inefficient use of hardware resources. Combining dynamic application requirements with the increased use of virtualised computing resources creates a challenging resource Management context for application and cloud-infrastructure owners. In such complex environments, business entities use SLAs as a means for specifying quantitative and qualitative requirements of services. There are several challenges in running distributed enterprise applications in cloud environments, ranging from the instantiation of service VMs in the correct order using an adequate quantity of computing resources, to adapting the number of running services in response to varying external loads, such as number of users. The application owner is interested in finding the optimum amount of computing and network resources to use for ensuring that the performance requirements of all her/his applications are met. She/he is also interested in appropriately scaling the distributed services so that application performance guarantees are maintained even under dynamic workload conditions. Similarly, the infrastructure Providers are interested in optimally provisioning the virtual resources onto the available physical infrastructure so that her/his operational costs are minimized, while maximizing the performance of tenants’ applications. Motivated by the complexities associated with the management and scaling of distributed applications, while satisfying multiple objectives (related to both consumers and providers of cloud resources), this thesis proposes a cloud resource management platform able to dynamically provision and coordinate the various lifecycle actions on both virtual and physical cloud resources using semantically enriched SLAs. The system focuses on dynamic sizing (scaling) of virtual infrastructures composed of virtual machines (VM) bounded application services. We describe several algorithms for adapting the number of VMs allocated to the distributed application in response to changing workload conditions, based on SLA-defined performance guarantees. We also present a framework for dynamic composition of scaling rules for distributed service, which used benchmark-generated application Monitoring traces. We show how these scaling rules can be combined and included into semantic SLAs for controlling allocation of services. We also provide a detailed description of the multi-objective infrastructure resource allocation problem and various approaches to satisfying this problem. We present a resource management system based on a genetic algorithm, which performs allocation of virtual resources, while considering the optimization of multiple criteria. We prove that our approach significantly outperforms reactive VM-scaling algorithms as well as heuristic-based VM-allocation approaches.

The remediation of contaminated sites supports the goal of sustainable development but may also have environmental impacts at a local, regional and global scale. Life cycle assessment (LCA) has increasingly been used in order to support site remediation decision-making. This review article discusses existing LCA methods and proposed models focusing on critical decisions and assumptions of the LCA application to site remediation activities. It is concluded that LCA has limitations as an adequate holistic decisionmaking tool since spatial and temporal differentiation of non-global impacts assessment is a major hurdle in site remediation LCA. Moreover, a consequential LCA perspective should be adopted when the different remediation services to be compared generate different site’s physical states, displacing alternative post-remediation scenarios. The environmental effects of the post-remediation stage of the site is generally disregarded in the past site remediation LCA studies and such exclusion may produce misleading conclusions and misdirected decision-making. In addition, clear guidance accepted by all stakeholders on remediation capital equipment exclusion and on dealing with multifunctional processes should be developed for site remediation LCA applications.

Customer satisfaction and retention are key issues for organizations in today’s competitive market place. As such, much research and revenue has been invested in developing accurate ways of assessing consumer satisfaction at both the macro (national) and micro (organizational) level, facilitating comparisons in performance both within and between industries. Since the instigation of the national customer satisfaction indices (CSI), partial least squares (PLS) has been used to estimate the CSI models in preference to structural equation models (SEM) because they do not rely on strict assumptions about the data. However, this choice was based upon some misconceptions about the use of SEM’s and does not take into consideration more recent advances in SEM, including estimation methods that are robust to non-normality and missing data. In this paper, both SEM and PLS approaches were compared by evaluating perceptions of the Isle of Man Post Office Products and Customer service using a CSI format. The new robust SEM procedures were found to be advantageous over PLS. Product quality was found to be the only driver of customer satisfaction, while image and satisfaction were the only predictors of loyalty, thus arguing for the specificity of postal services
