An x-ray diffraction method, based on the excitation of a surface diffracted wave, is described to investigate the capping process of InAs/GaAs (001) quantum dots (QDs). It is sensitive to the tiny misorientation of (111) planes at the surface of the buffer layer on samples with exposed QDs. After capping, the misorientation occurs in the cap-layer lattice faceting the QDs and its magnitude can be as large as 10 degrees depending on the QDs growth rates, probably due to changes in the size and shape of the QDs. A slow strain release process taking place at room temperature has also been observed by monitoring the misorientation angle of the (111) planes.

The compound of stoichiometry Mn(II)3[Mn(III)(CN)6]2·zH2O (z = 12−16) (1) forms air-stable, transparent red crystals. Low-temperature single crystal optical spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction provide compelling evidence for N-bonded high-spin manganese(II), and C-bonded low-spin manganese(III) ions arranged in a disordered, face-centered cubic lattice analogous to that of Prussian Blue. X-ray and neutron diffraction show structured diffuse scattering indicative of partially correlated (rather than random) substitutions of [Mn(III)(CN)6] ions by (H2O)6 clusters. Magnetic susceptibility measurements and elastic neutron scattering experiments indicate a ferrimagnetic structure below the critical temperature Tc = 35.5 K.

Bimetallic, oxalate-bridged compounds with bi- and trivalent transition metals comprise a class of layered materials which express a large variety in their molecular-based magnetic behavior. Because of this, the availability of the corresponding single-crystal structural data is essential to the successful interpretation of the experimental magnetic results. We report in this paper the crystal structure and magnetic properties of the ferromagnetic compound {[N(n-C3H7)4][MnIICrIII(C2O4)3]}n (1), the crystal structure of the antiferromagnetic compound {[N(n-C4H9)4][MnIIFeIII(C2O4)3]}n (2), and the results of a neutron diffraction study of a polycrystalline sample of the ferromagnetic compound {[P(C6D5)4][MnIICrIII(C2O4)3]}n (3). Crystal data:  1, rhombohedral, R3c, a = 9.363(3) Å, c = 49.207(27) Å, Z = 6; 2, hexagonal, P63, a = 9.482(2) Å, c = 17.827(8) Å, Z = 2. The structures consist of anionic, two-dimensional, honeycomb networks formed by the oxalate-bridged metal ions, interleaved by the templating cations. Single-crystal field dependent magnetization measurements as well as elastic neutron scattering experiments on the manganese(II)−chromium(III) samples show the existence of long-range ferromagnetic ordering behavior below Tc = 6 K. The magnetic structure corresponds to an alignment of the spins perpendicular to the network layers. In contrast, the manganese(II)−iron(III) compound expresses a two-dimensional antiferromagnetic ordering.

The synthesis, structural characterization, voltammetric experiments and antibacterial activity of [Ni(sulfisoxazole)(2)(H2O)(4)] center dot 2H(2)O and [Ni(sulfapyridine)(2)] were studied and compared with similar previously reported copper complexes. [Ni(sulfisoxazole)(2)(H2O)(4)] center dot 2H(2)O crystallized in a monoclinic system, space group C2/c where the nickel ion was in a slightly distorted octahedral environment, coordinated with two sulfisoxazole molecules through the heterocyclic nitrogen and four water molecules. [Ni(sulfapyridine)(2)] crystallized in a orthorhombic crystal system, space group Pnab. The nickel ion was in a distorted octahedral environment, coordinated by two aryl amine N from two sulfonamides acting as monodentate ligands and four N atoms (two sulfonamidic N and two heterocyclic N) from two different sulfonamide molecules acting as bidentate ligands. Differential pulse voltammograms were recorded showing irreversible peaks at 1040 and 1070 mV, respectively, attributed to Ni(II)/Ni(III) process. [Ni(sulfisoxazole)(2)(H2O)(4)] center dot 2H(2)O and [Ni(sulfapyridine)(2)] presented different antibacterial behavior against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli from the similar copper complexes and they were inactive against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The structural modifications upon heating of pentagonite, Ca(VO)(Si4O10)·4H2O (space group Ccm21, a=10.3708(2), b=14.0643(2), c=8.97810(10) Å, V=1309.53(3) Å3) were investigated by in situ temperature dependent single-crystal X-ray structure refinements. Diffraction data of a sample from Poona district (India) have been measured in steps of 25 up to 250 °C and in steps of 50 °C between 250 and 400 °C. Pentagonite has a porous framework structure made up by layers of silicate tetrahedra connected by V4+O5 square pyramids. Ca and H2O molecules are extraframework occupants. Room temperature diffraction data allowed refinement of H positions. The hydrogen-bond system links the extraframework occupants to the silicate layers and also interconnects the H2O molecules located inside the channels. Ca is seven-fold coordinated forming four bonds to O of the tetrahedral framework and three bonds to extraframework H2O. The H2O molecule at O9 showing a high displacement parameter is not bonded to Ca. The dehydration in pentagonite proceeds in three steps. At 100 °C the H2O molecule at O8 was released while O9 moved towards Ca. As a consequence the displacement parameter of H2O at O9 halved compared to that at room temperature. The unit-cell volume decreased to 1287.33(3) Å3 leading to a formula with 3H2O per formula unit (pfu). Ca remained seven-fold coordinated. At 175 °C Ca(VO)(Si4O10)·3H2O transformed into a new phase with 1H2O molecule pfu characterized by doubling of the c axis and the monoclinic space group Pn. Severe bending of specific TOT angles led to contraction of the porous three-dimensional framework. In addition, H2O at O9 was expelled while H2O at O7 approached a position in the center of the channel. The normalized volume decreased to 1069.44(9) Å3. The Ca coordination reduced from seven- to six-fold. At 225 °C a new anhydrous phase with space group Pna21 but without doubling of c had formed. Release of H2O at O7 caused additional contraction of TOT angles and volume reduction (V=1036.31(9) Å3). Ca adopted five-fold coordination. During heating excursion up to 400 °C this anhydrous phase remained preserved. Between room temperature and 225 °C the unit-cell volume decreased by 21% due to dehydration. The dehydration steps compare well with the thermo-gravimetric data reported in the literature.

The structures of mixed Langmuir (floating) monolayers and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of a phenanthroline-porphyrin with cadmium arachidate (PhenPor + CdAr) have been investigated by synchrotron X-ray grazing incidence diffraction (GIXD) and specular X-ray reflectivity (SXR). GIXD measurements of the floating monolayers showed only one peak, arising from the CdAr domains in the films, at a scattering angle of 21.5 degrees. This is consistent with a hexagonal structure (alpha = 4.77 Angstrom). The correlation length in these domains is 250 Angstrom. GMD measurements of the LB films, however, show two sets of diffraction features: one arises from CdAr domains with a rectangular in-plane structure (alpha = 7.44 Angstrom and b = 4.90 Angstrom) and a correlation length of 85 Angstrom; the other is from porphyrin domains with an oblique in-plane structure (alpha (p) 15.2 Angstrom, b(p) = 8.86 Angstrom, and gamma (p) = 80 degrees) and a correlation length of 105 Angstrom. These dimensions are consistent with the surface pressure-area isotherm measurements and indicate that the two components are immiscible. The thickness of the bilayer is 57 Angstrom, and there is no correlation between the bilayers. Introduction of a trigger compound does not alter the structure of the films but slightly increases the bilayer thickness. The SXR measurements of the floating monolayers also support the suggested immiscibility of the two components in the films.

The present paper is a comprehensive study concerning Fe K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements, which were performed to characterize the local structure of (1 - x)Pb(Fe2/3W1/3)O 3-xPbTiO3 samples as a function of temperature and PbTiO3 content. Results obtained by the fits of extended X-ray absorption fine structure consist with rhombohedral symmetry for Pb(Fe 2/3W1/3)O3 composition at temperatures lower than room temperature. This result is in apparent disagreement with X-ray and neutron diffraction characterization which have been reported. This apparent disagreement is related to the fact that XAS probes the short-range order, whereas X-ray diffraction provides structural information about the average structure. Moreover, as the PbTiO3 content increases, a disorder has been detected at local structure of the FeO6 octahedron. Analysis of X-ray absorption near edge structure spectra did not show modifications in intensity nor energy of transitions. © 2013 American Institute of Physics.

In this work we have investigated the intercalation of electron-donors between NbS2 slabs in Nb-based layer sulfides. Two series of Sr substituted Nb-based misfit sulfides belonging to the 1.5Q/1H and 1Q/1H series of misfit layer compounds have been synthesised. For large lanthanides (Ln=La, Ce), only the 1Q/1H compounds formed whereas for smaller lanthanides and yttrium, both types of phases can be obtained. The crystal structure of misfit sulfide (Pr0.55Sr0.45S)1.15NbS2 has been refined using the composite approach. In the Q-slab, Pr-atoms are partly replaced by Sr with a random distribution over one cation position. The crystal structure of misfit sulfide [(Sm1/3Sr2/3S)1.5]1.15NbS2 belonging to the 1.5Q/1H series have also been determined. The obtained results suggest a preferred occupancy of the cation positions in the slab where Sr atoms mainly occupy positions on the exterior of the slab while Sm atoms are in the center of the slab. The (La1-xSrxS)1.15NbS2 solid solution (0.1<x<0.9) has also been studied. It was found that the maximum value of Sr substitution is 40-50% and therefore, the minimal value of charge transfer to stabilize this structure type is about 0.6ē per Nb atom. An attempt to synthesize SrxNbS2 (0.1≤x≤0.5) intercalates was made but single phases were not obtained and increasing the temperature from 1000оС to 1100оС leads to the decomposition of these intercalates. Single crystals of Sr0.22Nb1.05S2 and Sr0.23NbS2 were found and their structures were determined. The structures belong to two different types of packings with statistical distribution of Sr between layers. A new superconducting sulfide, "EuNb2S5", was investigated by ED and HREM and its structure model consisting of Nb7S14 and (Eu3S4)2 slabs alternating along the c-axis is suggested. An attempt to suggest a model for the structure of "SrNb2S5" by means of X-ray single crystal diffraction was made. The proposed structure consists of two types of slabs: a Nb7S14 and a [Sr6(NbS4)2S] slab with niobium in tetrahedral coordination. It is shown that "SrNb2S5" and "EuNb2S5" are have similar structures. For the first time, single crystals of the complex sulfide BaNb0.9S3 have also been studied by means of X-ray single crystal diffraction. The single crystal refinement and EDX analysis showed the existence of cation vacancies at the niobium position. BaNb0.9S3 has also been studied by ED and no superstructure was found which implies that and the vacancies are statistically distributed. No improvement of the magnetic properties of the studied compounds was observed in comparison to NbS2.

The scope of my research project is to produce and characterize new crystalline forms of organic compounds, focusing the attention on co-crystals and then transferring these notions on APIs to produce co-crystals of potential interest in the pharmaceutical field. In the first part of this work co-crystallization experiments were performed using as building blocks the family of aliphatic dicarboxylic acids HOOC-(CH2)n-COOH, with n= 2-8. This class of compounds has always been an object of study because it is characterized by an interesting phenomenon of alternation of melting points: the acids with an even number of carbon atoms show a melting point higher than those with an odd one. The acids were co-crystallized with four dipyridyl molecules (formed by two pyridine rings with a different number of bridging carbon atoms) through the formation of intermolecular interactions N•••(H)O. The bases used were: 4,4’-bipyridine (BPY), 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (BPA), 1,2-(di-4-pyridyl)ethylene (BPE) and 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)propane (BPP). The co-crystals obtained by solution synthesis were characterized by different solid-state techniques to determine the structure and to see how the melting points in co-crystals change. In the second part of this study we tried to obtain new crystal forms of compounds of pharmaceutical interest. The APIs studied are: O-desmethylvenlafaxine, Lidocaine, Nalidixic Acid and Sulfadiazine. Each API was subjected to Polymorph Screening and Salt/Co-crystal Screening experiments to identify new crystal forms characterized by different properties. In a typical Salt/Co-crystal Screening the sample was made to react with a co-former (solid or liquid) through different methods: crystallization by solution, grinding, kneading and solid-gas reactions. The new crystal forms obtained were characterized by different solid state techniques (X-ray single crystal diffraction, X-ray powder diffraction, Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Thermogravimetric Analysis, Evolved gas analysis, FT-IR – ATR, Solid State N.M.R).

Structural and conformational properties of 1H-Isoindole-1,3(2H)-dione, 2-[(methoxycarbonyl)thio] (S-phthalimido O-methyl thiocarbonate) are analyzed using a combined approach including X-ray diffraction, vibrational spectra and theoretical calculation methods. The vibrational properties have been studied by infrared and Raman spectroscopies along with quantum chemical calculations (B3LYP and B3PW91 functional in connection with the 6-311++G** and aug-cc-pVDZ basis sets). The crystal structure was determined by X-ray diffraction methods. The substance crystallizes in the monoclinic P2(1)/c space group with a = 6.795(1), b = 5.109(1), c = 30.011(3) angstrom, beta = 90.310(3)degrees and Z = 4 molecules per unit cell. The conformation adopted by the N-S-C=O group is syn (C=O double bond in synperiplanar orientation with respect to the N-S single bond). The experimental molecular structure is well reproduced by the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ method. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Analysis of X-ray powder data for the melt-crystallisable aromatic poly(thioether thioether ketone) [-S-Ar-S-Ar-CO-Ar](n), ('PTTK', Ar= 1,4-phenylene), reveals that it adopts a crystal structure very different from that established for its ether-analogue PEEK. Molecular modelling and diffraction-simulation studies of PTTK show that the structure of this polymer is analogous to that of melt-crystallised poly(thioetherketone) [-SAr-CO-Ar](n) in which the carbonyl linkages in symmetry-related chains are aligned anti-parallel to one another. and that these bridging units are crystallographically interchangeable. The final model for the crystal structure of PTTK is thus disordered, in the monoclinic space group 121a (two chains per unit cell), with cell dimensions a = 7.83, b = 6.06, c = 10.35 angstrom, beta = 93.47 degrees. Polycondensation of 2,6-dihydroxynaphthalene with 4,4'-bis(4"-fluorobenzoyl)biphenyl affords a novel, semicrystalline poly(ether ketone) with a melting point of 406 degreesC and glass transition temperature (onset) of 168 degreesC. Molecular modeling and diffraction-simulation studies of this polymer, coupled with data from the single-crystal structure of an oligomer model, have enabled the crystal and molecular structure of the polymer to be determined from X-ray powder data. This structure-the first for any naphthalene-containing poly(ether ketone)-is fully ordered, in monoclinic space group P2(1)/b, with two chains per unit cell. Rietveld refinement against the experimental powder data gave a final agreement factor (R-wp) of 6.7%.
