Data analytic applications are characterized by large data sets that are subject to a series of processing phases. Some of these phases are executed sequentially but others can be executed concurrently or in parallel on clusters, grids or clouds. The MapReduce programming model has been applied to process large data sets in cluster and cloud environments. For developing an application using MapReduce there is a need to install/configure/access specific frameworks such as Apache Hadoop or Elastic MapReduce in Amazon Cloud. It would be desirable to provide more flexibility in adjusting such configurations according to the application characteristics. Furthermore the composition of the multiple phases of a data analytic application requires the specification of all the phases and their orchestration. The original MapReduce model and environment lacks flexible support for such configuration and composition. Recognizing that scientific workflows have been successfully applied to modeling complex applications, this paper describes our experiments on implementing MapReduce as subworkflows in the AWARD framework (Autonomic Workflow Activities Reconfigurable and Dynamic). A text mining data analytic application is modeled as a complex workflow with multiple phases, where individual workflow nodes support MapReduce computations. As in typical MapReduce environments, the end user only needs to define the application algorithms for input data processing and for the map and reduce functions. In the paper we present experimental results when using the AWARD framework to execute MapReduce workflows deployed over multiple Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances.

Workflows have been successfully applied to express the decomposition of complex scientific applications. However the existing tools still lack adequate support to important aspects namely, decoupling the enactment engine from tasks specification, decentralizing the control of workflow activities allowing their tasks to run in distributed infrastructures, and supporting dynamic workflow reconfigurations. We present the AWARD (Autonomic Workflow Activities Reconfigurable and Dynamic) model of computation, based on Process Networks, where the workflow activities (AWA) are autonomic processes with independent control that can run in parallel on distributed infrastructures. Each AWA executes a task developed as a Java class with a generic interface allowing end-users to code their applications without low-level details. The data-driven coordination of AWA interactions is based on a shared tuple space that also enables dynamic workflow reconfiguration. For evaluation we describe experimental results of AWARD workflow executions in several application scenarios, mapped to the Amazon (Elastic Computing EC2) Cloud.

The two largest causes for battery consumption on mobile devices are related with the display and network operations. Since most application need to share data and communicate with remote servers, communications should be as lightweight and efficient as possible. In network communication, serialization plays a central role as the process of converting an object into a stream of bytes. One of the most popular data-interchange format is JSON (JavaScript Object Notation). This paper presents a survey on JSON parsers in mobile scenarios. The aim of the survey is to find the most efficient JSON parser in mobile communications characterised by high transfer rate of small amounts of data. In the performance benchmark we compare the time required to read and write data with several popular JSON parser implementations such as Gson, Jackson, org.json and others. The results of this survey are important for others that need to select an efficient parser for mobile communication.

Em um inventário da família Lejeuneaceae (Hepaticae) na Estação Científica Ferreira Penna, município de Melgaço, Pará, foi observada a ocorrência de Leptolejeunea elliptica (Lehm. & Lindenb.) Schiffn., Leptolejeunea tridentata Bischler e Rhaphidolejeunea polyrhiza (Nees) Bischler. Leptolejeunea tridentata é uma nova ocorrência para o Brasil. Todas as espécies são descritas e ilustradas, com comentários adicionais. Uma chave artificial para a separação das mesmas é apresentada.

Em um inventário de Lejeuneaceae (Hepaticae) na Estação Científica Ferreira Penna, município de Melgaço, Pará, foi observada a ocorrência de Lejeunea caespitosa Lindenb. ex Gottsche, Lindenb. & Nees, Lejeunea flava (Swartz) Nees, Lejeunea tapajosensis Spruce, Microlejeunea acutifolia Stephani e Microlejeunea epiphylla Bischler, destacando Microlejeunea acutifolia como nova ocorrência para o Brasil e Microlejeunea epiphylla mencionada pela primeira vez para o Estado do Pará. Todas as espécies estão descritas e ilustradas e é apresentada uma chave artificial para a separação das mesmas, assim como comentários adicionais.

Workflow technology is expanding rapidly. In doing so, new technologies are employed. The internet, which is one such technology, could allow every user within an organization to make use of workflow. The internet- based workflows are discussed in this thesis from technical and, also, from economical points of view. First, as an ampler introduction, there are presented the basic concepts related to this topic: the workflow concept, about processes and workflows and the workflow management system. Also in this introduction it is discussed about the XML language and the overview of the Web Services stack. Then is explained how the internet-based workflows work: is presented the architecture of an internet-based enterprise and, also, the flows between web-services. Finally, there are presented, briefly, some workflow languages. In addition, based on this knowledge, a sample workflow was implemented.

En este libro de la serie de Educaci??n Ambiental de la UNESCO se analiza la forma de integrar el contenido ambiental en los curr??culos de la educaci??n universitaria, en particular, lo criterios y principios claves para determinar qu?? conocimientos relacionados con el medio ambiente, deber??an formar parte del acervo educativo de cada estudiante independientemente de su especializaci??n y su ocupaci??n en el futuro. Para ello este estudio analiza dos grupos de criterios, educativos y cient??ficos, coincidentes en algunos puntos y complementarios entre s??. El objetivo prioritario de esta publicaci??n es dar a conocer los n??cleos esenciales de contenidos de los Programas de Cooperaci??n Territorial, Escuelas Viajeras, Rutas Literarias y Rutas Cient??ficas, que se desarrollan en la Comunidad Aut??noma del Principado de Asturias. Escuelas Viajeras, creado por el Ministerio de Educaci??n y Ciencia en 1983, comenz?? a desarrollarse en Asturias en 1984. Actualmente el programa se plantea como una actividad complementaria de car??cter educativo que pretende dar a conocer al alumnado visitante las caracter??sticas culturales y sociales del entorno asturiano. Esta dirigido a ni??os y ni??as que cursen quinto o sexto de Educaci??n Primaria en centros espa??oles sostenidos con fondos p??blicos. Rutas Literarias, creado en el a??o 2003, est?? dirigido a alumnos y alumnas de tercero y cuarto de ESO, tiene como objetivo complementar la formaci??n recibida en las aulas dentro del ??mbito de la Lengua y la Literatura y fomentar el h??bito lector. Bajo el t??tulo La Asturias de Clar??n tiene a este autor y su obra como hilo conductor de todas las actividades que desarrollan los participantes en Asturias. Por ??ltimo, el programa Rutas Cient??ficas nacido en 2006 con la finalidad de aumentar el inter??s del alumnado por las ciencias y fomentar su matriculaci??n en estudios universitarios de car??cter cient??fico y t??cnico, est?? orientado a estudiantes que cursan materias cient??ficas en Bachillerato o en Ciclos Formativos de Grado Medio. En Asturias, los itinerarios y actividades se desarrollan bajo el t??tulo Explotaci??n y Conservaci??n de los Recursos Naturales en Asturias y giran en torno al an??lisis del impacto asociado a la explotaci??n de los recursos naturales m??s representativos de Asturias, invitando con ello a reflexionar sobre la necesidad de orientar nuestras intervenciones en el medio hacia un modelo de desarrollo m??s sostenible.
