Background: The Flutter (R) VRP1 combines high frequency oscillation and positive expiratory pressure (PEP). Objective: To separately evaluate the effect of the Flutter (R) VRP1 components (high frequency oscillation and PEP) on mucus transportability in patients with bronchiectasis. Methods: Eighteen patients with bronchiectasis received sessions with the Flutter (R) VRP1 or PEP for 30 min daily in a randomized, crossover study. The treatment duration was four weeks with one of the therapies, one week of a ""wash-out"" period and followed by four more weeks with the other treatment. Weekly secretion samples were collected and evaluated for mucociliary relative transport velocity (RTV), displacement in a simulated cough machine (SCM) and contact angle measurement (CAM). For the proposed comparisons, a linear regression model was used with mixed effects with a significance level of 5%. Results: The Flutter (R) VRP1 treatment resulted in greater displacement in SCM and lower CAM when comparing results from the first (9.6 +/- 3.4 cm and 29.4 +/- 5.7 degrees, respectively) and fourth weeks of treatment (12.44 +/- 10.5 cm and 23.28 +/- 6.2, respectively; p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the RTV between the treatment weeks for either the Flutter (R) VRP1 or PEP. Conclusion: The use of the Flutter (R) VRP1 for four weeks is capable of altering the respiratory secretion transport properties, and this alteration is related to the high frequency oscillation component. We present a new unifying framework for investigating throughput-WIP(Work-in-Process) optimal control problems in queueing systems, based on reformulating them as linear programming (LP) problems withspecial structure: We show that if a throughput-WIP performance pairin a stochastic system satisfies the Threshold Property we introducein this paper, then we can reformulate the problem of optimizing alinear objective of throughput-WIP performance as a (semi-infinite)LP problem over a polygon with special structure (a thresholdpolygon). The strong structural properties of such polygones explainthe optimality of threshold policies for optimizing linearperformance objectives: their vertices correspond to the performancepairs of threshold policies. We analyze in this framework theversatile input-output queueing intensity control model introduced byChen and Yao (1990), obtaining a variety of new results, including (a)an exact reformulation of the control problem as an LP problem over athreshold polygon; (b) an analytical characterization of the Min WIPfunction (giving the minimum WIP level required to attain a targetthroughput level); (c) an LP Value Decomposition Theorem that relatesthe objective value under an arbitrary policy with that of a giventhreshold policy (thus revealing the LP interpretation of Chen andYao's optimality conditions); (d) diminishing returns and invarianceproperties of throughput-WIP performance, which underlie thresholdoptimality; (e) a unified treatment of the time-discounted andtime-average cases.

Wiskott–Aldrich syndrome (WAS) is an X-linked immunodeficiency caused by mutations that affect the WAS protein (WASP) and characterized by cytoskeletal abnormalities in hematopoietic cells. By using the yeast two-hybrid system we have identified a proline-rich WASP-interacting protein (WIP), which coimmunoprecipitated with WASP from lymphocytes. WIP binds to WASP at a site distinct from the Cdc42 binding site and has actin as well as profilin binding motifs. Expression of WIP in human B cells, but not of a WIP truncation mutant that lacks the actin binding motif, increased polymerized actin content and induced the appearance of actin-containing cerebriform projections on the cell surface. These results suggest that WIP plays a role in cortical actin assembly that may be important for lymphocyte function.

In budding yeast, partitioning of the cytoplasm during cytokinesis can proceed via a pathway dependent on the contractile actomyosin ring, as in other eukaryotes, or alternatively via a septum deposition pathway dependent on an SH3 domain protein, Hof1/Cyk2 (the yeast PSTPIP1 ortholog). In dividing yeast cells, Hof1 forms a ring at the bud neck distinct from the actomyosin ring, and this zone is active in septum deposition. We previously showed the yeast Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein (WASP)-interacting protein (WIP) ortholog, verprolin/Vrp1/End5, interacts with Hof1 and facilitates Hof1 recruitment to the bud neck. A Vrp1 fragment unable to interact with yeast WASP (Las17/Bee1), localize to the actin cytoskeleton or function in polarization of the cortical actin cytoskeleton nevertheless retains function in Hof1 recruitment and cytokinesis. Here, we show the ability of this Vrp1 fragment to bind the Hof1 SH3 domain via its Hof one trap (HOT) domain is critical for cytokinesis. The Vrp1 HOT domain consists of three tandem proline-rich motifs flanked by serines. Unexpectedly, the Hof 1 SH3 domain itself is not required for cytokinesis and indeed appears to negatively regulate cytokinesis. The Vrp1 HOT domain promotes cytokinesis by binding to the Hof 1 SH3 domain and counteracting its inhibitory effect.

Contention on the memory bus in COTS based multicore systems is becoming a major determining factor of the execution time of a task. Analyzing this extra execution time is non-trivial because (i) bus arbitration protocols in such systems are often undocumented and (ii) the times when the memory bus is requested to be used are not explicitly controlled by the operating system scheduler; they are instead a result of cache misses. We present a method for finding an upper bound on the extra execution time of a task due to contention on the memory bus in COTS based multicore systems. This method makes no assumptions on the bus arbitration protocol (other than assuming that it is work-conserving).

It has been widely studied how to schedule real-time tasks on multiprocessor platforms. Several studies find optimal scheduling policies for implicit deadline task systems, but it is hard to understand how each policy utilizes the two important aspects of scheduling real-time tasks on multiprocessors:inter-job concurrency and job urgency. In this paper, we introduce a new scheduling policy that considers these two properties. We prove that the policy is optimal for the special case when the execution time of all tasks are equally one and deadlines are implicit, and observe that the policy is a new concept in that it is not an instance of Pfair or ERfair. It remains open to find a schedulability condition for general task systems under our scheduling policy.

Real-time scheduling usually considers worst-case values for the parameters of task (or message stream) sets, in order to provide safe schedulability tests for hard real-time systems. However, worst-case conditions introduce a level of pessimism that is often inadequate for a certain class of (soft) real-time systems. In this paper we provide an approach for computing the stochastic response time of tasks where tasks have inter-arrival times described by discrete probabilistic distribution functions, instead of minimum inter-arrival (MIT) values.
