This paper compares the performances of two different optimisation techniques for solving inverse problems; the first one deals with the Hierarchical Asynchronous Parallel Evolutionary Algorithms software (HAPEA) and the second is implemented with a game strategy named Nash-EA. The HAPEA software is based on a hierarchical topology and asynchronous parallel computation. The Nash-EA methodology is introduced as a distributed virtual game and consists of splitting the wing design variables - aerofoil sections - supervised by players optimising their own strategy. The HAPEA and Nash-EA software methodologies are applied to a single objective aerodynamic ONERA M6 wing reconstruction. Numerical results from the two approaches are compared in terms of the quality of model and computational expense and demonstrate the superiority of the distributed Nash-EA methodology in a parallel environment for a similar design quality.

Heat sinks are widely used for cooling electronic devices and systems. Their thermal performance is usually determined by the material, shape, and size of the heat sink. With the assistance of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and surrogate-based optimization, heat sinks can be designed and optimized to achieve a high level of performance. In this paper, the design and optimization of a plate-fin-type heat sink cooled by impingement jet is presented. The flow and thermal fields are simulated using the CFD simulation; the thermal resistance of the heat sink is then estimated. A Kriging surrogate model is developed to approximate the objective function (thermal resistance) as a function of design variables. Surrogate-based optimization is implemented by adaptively adding infill points based on an integrated strategy of the minimum value, the maximum mean square error approach, and the expected improvement approaches. The results show the influence of design variables on the thermal resistance and give the optimal heat sink with lowest thermal resistance for given jet impingement conditions.

The School of Electrical and Electronic Systems Engineering of Queensland University of Technology (like many other universities around the world) has recognised the importance of complementing the teaching of signal processing with computer based experiments. A laboratory has been developed to provide a "hands-on" approach to the teaching of signal processing techniques. The motivation for the development of this laboratory was the cliche "What I hear I remember but what I do I understand." The laboratory has been named as the "Signal Computing and Real-time DSP Laboratory" and provides practical training to approximately 150 final year undergraduate students each year. The paper describes the novel features of the laboratory, techniques used in the laboratory based teaching, interesting aspects of the experiments that have been developed and student evaluation of the teaching techniques

Design creativity involves developing novel and useful solutions to design problems The research in this article is an attempt to understand how novelty of a design resulting from a design process is related to the kind of outcomes. described here as constructs, involved in the design process A model of causality, the SAPPhIRE model, is used as the basis of the analysis The analysis is based on previous research that shows that designing involves development and exploration of the seven basic constructs of the SAPPhIRE model that constitute the causal connection between the various levels of abstraction at which a design can be described The constructs am state change, action, parts. phenomenon. input. organs. and effect The following two questions are asked. Is there a relationship between novelty and the constructs? If them is a relationship, what is the degree of this relationship? A hypothesis is developed to answer the questions an increase in the number and variety of ideas explored while designing should enhance the variety of concept space. leading to an increase in the novelty of the concept space Eight existing observational studies of designing sessions are used to empirically validate the hypothesis Each designing session involves an individual designer. experienced or novice. solving a design problem by producing concepts and following a think-aloud protocol. The results indicate dependence of novelty of concept space on variety of concept space and dependence of variety of concept space on variety of idea space. thereby validating the hypothesis The Jesuits also reveal a strong correlation between novelty and the constructs, correlation value decreases as the abstraction level of the constructs reduces. signifying the importance of using constructs at higher abstraction levels for enhancing novelty

Heat exchanger design is a complex task involving the selection of a large number of interdependent design parameters. There are no established general techniques for optimizing the design, though a few earlier attempts provide computer software based on gradient methods, case study methods, etc. The authors felt that it would be useful to determine the nature of the optimal and near-optimal feasible designs to devise an optimization technique. Therefore, in this article they have obtained a large number of feasible designs of shell and tube heat exchangers, intended to perform a given heat duty, by an exhaustive search method. They have studied how their capital and operating costs varied. The study reveals several interesting aspects of the dependence of capital and total costs on various design parameters. The authors considered a typical shell and tube heat exchanger used in an oil refinery. Its heat duty, inlet temperature and other details are given.

Most lead bullion is refined by pyrometallurgical methods - this involves a serics of processes that remove the antimony (softening) silver (Parkes process), zinc (vacuum dezincing) and if need be, bismuth (Betterton-Kroll process). The first step, softening, removes the antimony, arsenic and tin by air oxidation in a furnace or by the Harris process. Next, in the Parkes process, zinc is added to the melt to remove the silver and gold. Insoluble zinc, silver and gold compounds are skimmed off from the melt surface. Excess zinc added during desilvering is removed from lead bullion using one of ghree methods: * Vacuum dezincing; * Chlorine dezincing; or * Harris dezincing. The present study concentrates on the Vacuum dezincing process for lead refining. The main aims of the research are to develop mathematical model(s), using Computational Fluid Dyanmics (CFD) a Surface Averaged Model (SAM), to predict the process behaviour under various operating conditions, thus providing detailed information of the process - insight into its reaction to changes of key operating parameters. Finally, the model will be used to optimise the process in terms of initial feed concentration, temperature, vacuum height cooling rate, etc.

A rapid design methodology for biorthogonal wavelet transform cores has been developed based on a generic, scaleable architecture for wavelet filters. The architecture offers efficient hardware utilisation by combining the linear phase property of biorthogonal filters with decimation in a MAC-based implementation. The design has been captured in VHDL and parameterised in terms of wavelet type, data word length and coefficient word length. The control circuit is embedded within the cores and allows them to be cascaded without any interface glue logic for any desired level of decomposition. The design time to produce silicon layout of a biorthogonal wavelet system is typically less than a day. The silicon cores produced are comparable in area and performance to hand-crafted designs, The designs are portable across a range of foundries and are also applicable to FPGA and PLD implementations.

Methods are presented for developing synthesizable FFT cores. These are based on a modular approach in which parameterized commutator and processor blocks are cascaded to implement the computations required in many important FFT signal flow graphs. In addition, it is shown how the use of a digital serial data organization can be used to produce systems that offer 100% processor utilization along with reductions in storage requirements. The approach has been used to create generators for the automated synthesis of FFT cores that are portable across a broad range of silicon technologies. Resulting chip designs are competitive with ones created using manual methods but with significant reductions in design times.
