Toucans are prominent components of the tropical American avifauna. Although these birds are very conspicuous, there are few ecological studies focusing on them. In this study, the diets of four sympatric toucans (Ramphastos vitellinus, R. dicolorus, Selenidera maculirostris, and Baillonius bailloni) were assessed by recording feeding bouts at two altitudes in the Atlantic Forest of southeast Brazil. Our results show that toucans are predominantly frugivorous birds (96.5% of the 289 feeding bouts were on fruits). In the lowlands (70 m elev.), only fruits (48 species, 27 families) were recorded, while in the highlands (700 m elev.), toucans were observed feeding on fruits (25 species, 22 families), flowers, leaves, and insects. Non-fruit items were recorded only in the highlands, most of them eaten by B. bailloni. Cecropia glaziovii and Euterpe edulis, two abundant plants in the highland and lowland sites, respectively, and Virola oleifera, a plant that produces lipid-rich arillate fruits, were eaten heavily by the toucans. The number of feeding bouts recorded for R. vitellinus in the lowlands was positively correlated with lipid content of the fruits eaten. The diameters of fruits eaten by toucans varied greatly (range = 0.4-25.0 mm). While the large Ramphastos species not only ate tiny fruits (e.g., Hyeronima alchorneoides) but also large ones (e.g., Virola gardneri), the toucanets ate piecemeal the large fruits that exceeded their gape width, suggesting that gape size did not limit the use of any fruit by the toucans at our study sites.

Ethnopharmacological relevance: Virola surinamensis (Myristicaceae), popularly known as mucuiba, ucuuba or ucuuba do igapo is a large tree that grows abundantly in Varzea forest and on river banks in the Brazilian states of Amazonas and Tocantins. The resin obtained by cuts on the stem bark is a reputed folk remedy in its natural form for the treatment of ulcer, gastritis inflammation and cancer.Aim of the study: The present work evaluated the pharmacological activity of the resin obtained from bark of V surinamensis as antiulcerogenic in experimental in vivo model in order to observe whether its traditional use is justified.Materials and methods: The preventive action of ethanolic extract of V surinamensis was evaluated in experimental in vivo models in rodents that simulated this disease in human gastric mucosa. Results: Oral administration of acidified ethanol solution produced severe hemorrhagic lesions in glandular mucosa with ulcerative lesion of 50 +/- 11.5 mm. In animals pretreated with V surinamensis (500 mg/kg, p.o.) a significant inhibition of mucosal injury of 2.40 +/- 0.56 mm (95% inhibition) was detected. The V. surinamensis, at the same dose, also reduced significantly (p < 0.05) the formation of gastric lesions induced by indomethacin (39%), stress (45%) and by pylorus ligature in mice (31%) when compared to animals treated with vehicle. The extract from V surinamensis exerts gastroprotective action only when this extract contacts gastric mucosa (oral route) with. increased pH values and reduced H(+) concentration of gastric contents. The ethanolic extract of V surinamensis resin was analyzed by TLC and spectrometric methods (NMR and ES-MS) and the main constituent of this extract was epicatechin. Conclusions: We suggest that the epicatechin present in V surinamensis resin may be among active principles responsible for the antiulcer activity shown by the tested resin but their used suggest carefulness because toxicological symptoms mentioned by population.

The Amazon Indians Waiapi living in the West of Amapa State of Brazil, treat malaria with an inhalation of vapor obtained from leaves of Viola surinamensis. The essential oil obtained from adult and plantlet leaves was analyzed by GC/MS and 11 monoterpenes, 11 sesquiterpenes and three phenylpropanoids were identified. Plantlet essential oil caused 100% of growth inhibition after 48 h in the development of the young trophozoite to schizont stage and the sesquiterpene nerolidol (100 mu g/ml) was identified as one of the active constituents (100% of growth inhibition was obtained). In addition, examination of [(UC)-C-14]-glucose incorporation showed that activity of nerolidol is related to the inhibition of glycoprotein biosynthesis. (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. Ireland Ltd. The essential oil from leaves of Virola surinamensis shows circadian variation in elemicin and in monoterpenes during the rainy season (February). The monoterpenes represents 50% of total volatile compounds during the dry season(June). Sesquiterpenes are predominant (50%) in the early rainy season (October). (C) 1997 Published by Elsevier B.V. Dichloromethane extracts from twigs of Virola surinamensis (Myristicaceae) showed in vitro trypanosomicidal activity against trypomastigote form of Trypanosoma cruzi. The extract, fractionated by preparative circular chromatography and preparative high-performance liquid chromatography yielded two steroids, two lignans, five flavonoids, and one polyketide. Among the isolated compounds, the lignans presented the highest trypanosomicidal activity.

Quantitative analysis carried out by high performance liquid chromatography indicated the accumulation of a major secondary compound in seedlings of Virola sebifera which was isolated and identified as the lignan hydroxy-otobain. This lignan occurs only in trace amounts in the seeds, where cyclolignans (aryltetralones) are by far the major components. In addition to hydroxy-otobain, only hydroxy-aryltetralones were detected in the seedlings, indicating a selective process in the translocation of secondary compounds. Chromatographic fractionation of the dichloromethane extract from roots of Virola surinamensis yielded two new natural products, 3-epi-juruenolide C and 2'-hydroxy-7,4'-dimethoxyisoflavone, as well as various known steroids, lignans, isoflavones, flavonoids and diarylpropanes. of these, alpha,2'-dihydroxy-4,3'-dimethoxydihydrochal biochanin A and 2'-hydroxy-7,4'-dimethoxyisoflavone displayed antifungal activity against Cladosporium cladosporioides at a minimum amount of 5 mu g, whereas 7-hydroxyflavanone and 7-hydroxy-4'-methoxyisoflavone exhibited an antifungal activity 10-fold higher than the positive control Nystatin. A comparative phytochemical study between pericarps of Iryanthera lancifolia and Virola surinamensis showed that the first one contains a new pair of epimeric 2-alkenyl-gamma-lactones, besides an aryltetralinic lignan and one tocotrienol, while the second species contains the lignans, galgravin and veraguensin, seven juruenolides: juruenolides C, D, F, G and epi-juruenolides D, F, G, together with three pairs of epimeric aliphatic 2-alkenyl-gamma-lactones. Juruenolide F, epi-juruenolides D, F, G and the 2-alkenyl-gamma-lactones are new natural compounds. (C) 1998 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.
