The interpolation of points by means of Information Technology programs appears as a technical tool of some relevancy in the hydrogeology in general and in the study of the humid zones in particular. Our approach has been the determination of the 3-D geometry of the humid zones of major depth of the Rabasa Lakes. To estimate the topography of the lake bed, we proceed to acquire information in the field by means of sonar and GPS equipment. A total of 335 points were measured both on the perimeter and in the lake bed. In a second stage, this information was used in a kriging program to obtain the bathymetry of the wetland. This methodology is demonstrated as one of the most reliable and cost-efficient for the 3-D analysis of this type of water masses. The bathymetric study of the zone allows us to characterize the mid- and long-term hydrological evolution of the lakes by means of depth-area-volume curves.

We present a remote sensing observational method for the measurement of the spatio-temporal dynamics of ocean waves. Variational techniques are used to recover a coherent space-time reconstruction of oceanic sea states given stereo video imagery. The stereoscopic reconstruction problem is expressed in a variational optimization framework. There, we design an energy functional whose minimizer is the desired temporal sequence of wave heights. The functional combines photometric observations as well as spatial and temporal regularizers. A nested iterative scheme is devised to numerically solve, via 3-D multigrid methods, the system of partial differential equations resulting from the optimality condition of the energy functional. The output of our method is the coherent, simultaneous estimation of the wave surface height and radiance at multiple snapshots. We demonstrate our algorithm on real data collected off-shore. Statistical and spectral analysis are performed. Comparison with respect to an existing sequential method is analyzed.

Cycloaddition reactions have been employed in polymer synthesis since the mid-nineteen sixties. This critical review will highlight recent notable advances in this field. For example, [2 + 2] cycloaddition reactions have been utilized in numerous polymerizations to enable the construction of strained polymer systems such as poly(2-azetidinone)s that can, in turn, afford polyfunctional beta-amino acid derived polymers. Polymers have also been synthesized successfully via (3 + 2) cycloaddition methods utilizing both thermal and high-pressure conditions. 'Click chemistry'-a process involving the reaction of azides with olefins, has also been adopted to generate linear and hyperbranched polymer architectures in a very efficient manner. [4 + 2] Cycloadditions have also been utilized under thermal and high-pressure conditions to produce rigid polymers such as polyimides and polyphenylenes. These cycloaddition polymerization methods afford polymers with potential for use in high performance polymers applications such as high temperature resistant coatings and polymeric organic light emitting diodes.

The increasing use of drug combinations to treat disease states, such as cancer, calls for improved delivery systems that are able to deliver multiple agents. Herein, we report a series of novel Janus dendrimers with potential for use in combination therapy. Different generations (first and second) of PEG-based dendrons containing two different “model drugs”, benzyl alcohol (BA) and 3-phenylpropionic acid (PPA), were synthesized. BA and PPA were attached via two different linkers (carbonate and ester, respectively) to promote differential drug release. The four dendrons were coupled together via (3 + 2) cycloaddition chemistries to afford four Janus dendrimers, which contained varying amounts and different ratios of BA and PPA, namely, (BA)2-G1-G1-(PPA)2, (BA)4-G2-G1-(PPA)2, (BA)2-G1-G2-(PPA)4, and (BA)4-G2-G2-(PPA)4. Release studies in plasma showed that the dendrimers provided sequential release of the two model drugs, with BA being released faster than PPA from all of the dendrons. The different dendrimers allowed delivery of increasing amounts (0.15–0.30 mM) and in exact molecular ratios (1:2; 2:1; 1:2; 2:2) of the two model drug compounds. The dendrimers were noncytotoxic (100% viability at 1 mg/mL) toward human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) and nontoxic toward red blood cells, as confirmed by hemolysis studies. These studies demonstrate that these Janus PEG-based dendrimers offer great potential for the delivery of drugs via combination therapy.

Muscarine was identified as an active principle of the poisonous mushroom Amanita muscaria over 170 years ago and has been identified as an agonist of acetylcholine. The synthesis of all stereoisomers of muscarine have been accomplished at this stage by chemical methods and the biological activity of these compounds tested. A number of synthetic routes to enantiomerically pure muscarine and its analogues have been published. In this work, we are focussed on the use of a novel biotransformation strategy to access these compounds. Asymmetric synthesis involves targeting a synthetic pathway leading to one enantiomer of a compound and biocatalysis is one strategy used in asymmetric synthesis. Chapter 1 consists of a review of the relevant literature pertaining to the synthesis and stereoselective transformations of 3-hydroxytetrahydrofuranss. A review of synthetic routes to these compounds is presented, with a particular focus on routes to the natural product muscarine and its analogues. Chapter 2 discusses the preparative routes to the 3-hydroxytetrahydrofurans via 3(2H)- furanones. Steps amongst which include Rh(II) mediate cyclisation and kinetic resolution via baker’s yeast mediated carbonyl reduction, resulting in enantioenriched 3- hydroxytetrahydrofuran derivatives. Finally, application of this methodology to the preparation of all four enantiomers of an analogue of desmethylmuscarine and the synthesis of epimuscarine is described. Chapter 3 consists of a detailed experimental section outlining the synthetic procedures employed.

The gold(I)-catalyzed chemoselective dearomatization of β-naphthols is reported through a straightforward approach via [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement /allene-cyclyzation cascade processes. Easily accessed naphthyl-propargyl ethers and derivatives in this work are employed as starting materials. Delightfully, an array of deoramatized dyhydrofuryl -naphthalen-2(1H)-ones featured densely functional groups are obtained in high yields (up to 98%) in 10 min reaction time under extremely mild reaction conditions like reagent grade solvent and exposure to air. The potential of accessing to high enantioselectivety on the dearomatized dyhydrofuryl- naphthalen-2(1H)-ones is also approved by the good ee (65%) relying on (R)-xylyl- BINAP(AuCl)2. In addition, complete theoretical elucidation of the reaction pathway is also proposed which addresses a rationale for essential motivation such as regio- and chemoselectivity. Moreover, an efficient gold catalyzed intermolecular dearomatization of substituted β-naphthols with allenamides is presented here. PPh3AuTFA (5 mol %) approves the efficient dearomatively allylation protocol under mild conditions and exhibits high tolerance on substrates scope (24 examples) in good to excellent yield accompanied with high regioselectivity and stereoselectivity. Moreover, the synergistic catalytic system also highlight the synergistic function between the [PPh3Au]+ (π-acid) and TFA− (Lewis base). At last, a new chiral BINOL phosphoric acid silver salt is successfully synthesized and used as the chiral counter anion, which strongly promotes the enantioselectivity (up to 92%). At last but not least, crucially, SmI2 induced enantioselective formal synthesis of strychnine, a complex alkaloid and a classical target used to benchmark new synthetic methods is developed. Enantioselective dearomatising radical cyclisation on to the indole unit and further ET will then give organosamarium that is quenched diastereoselectively by the ester to deliver Strychnine in 7 steps.

An ultrasound-assisted synthesis of symmetrical 1,3-diyne compounds with electron-withdrawing or donating substituents is described and illustrated by the palladium-catalyzed homocoupling reaction of n-butyl alkynyltellurides. This procedure offers easy access to 1,3-diynes in very short reaction times, and the products are achieved in good to excellent yields. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) is a current pharmacological approach to increase peripheral neutrophil counts after anti-tumor therapies. Pain is most relevant side effect of G-CSF in healthy volunteers and cancer patients. Therefore, the mechanisms of G-CSF-induced hyperalgesia were investigated focusing on the role of spinal mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinases ERK (extracellular signal-regulated kinase). JNK (Jun N-terminal Kinase) and p38, and PI(3)K (phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase). G-CSF induced dose (30-300 ng/paw)-dependent mechanical hyperalgesia, which was inhibited by local post-treatment with morphine. This effect of morphine was reversed by naloxone (opioid receptor antagonist). Furthermore, G-CSF-induced hyperalgesia was inhibited in a dose-dependent manner by intrathecal pre-treatment with ERK (PD98059), JNK (SB600125), p38 (SB202190) or PI(3)K (wortmanin) inhibitors. The co-treatment with MAP kinase and PI(3)K inhibitors, at doses that were ineffective as single treatment, significantly inhibited G-CSF-induced hyperalgesia. Concluding, in addition to systemic opioids, peripheral opioids as well as spinal treatment with MAP kinases and PI(3)K inhibitors also reduce G-CSF-induced pain. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. Spaceborne/airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems provide high resolution two-dimensional terrain imagery. The paper proposes a technique for combining multiple SAR images, acquired on flight paths slightly separated in the elevation direction, to generate high resolution three-dimensional imagery. The technique could be viewed as an extension to interferometric SAR (InSAR) in that it generates topographic imagery with an additional dimension of resolution. The 3-D multi-pass SAR imaging system is typically characterised by a relatively short ambiguity length in the elevation direction. To minimise the associated ambiguities we exploit the relative phase information within the set of images to track the terrain landscape. The SAR images are then coherently combined, via a nonuniform DFT, over a narrow (in elevation) volume centred on the 'dominant' terrain ground plane. The paper includes a detailed description of the technique, background theory, including achievable resolution, and the results of an experimental study.
