Grignard reaction followed by ozonolysis, or ozonolysis followed by Grignard reaction on the pentenoate 8, generates the diol 9. Cyclodehydration of 9 leads to the 3-oxacuparene (6), whereas PCC oxidation furnishes the 3-oxa-beta-cuparenone (7). Methanesulfonic acid-P2O5 transforms 7 into cyclopentenones 4, 5, known precursors to beta-cuparenone (3), and the naphthalenone 14.

The analysis of seabed structure is important in a wide variety of scientific and industrial applications. In this paper, underwater acoustic data produced by bottom-penetrating sonar (Topas) are analyzed using unsupervised volumetric segmentation, based on a three dimensional Gibbs-Markov model. The result is a concise and accurate description of the seabed, in which key structures are emphasized. This description is also very well suited to further operations, such as the enhancement and automatic recognition of important structures. Experimental results demonstrating the effectiveness of this approach are shown, using Topas data gathered in the North Sea off Horten, Norway.

The interpolation of points by means of Information Technology programs appears as a technical tool of some relevancy in the hydrogeology in general and in the study of the humid zones in particular. Our approach has been the determination of the 3-D geometry of the humid zones of major depth of the Rabasa Lakes. To estimate the topography of the lake bed, we proceed to acquire information in the field by means of sonar and GPS equipment. A total of 335 points were measured both on the perimeter and in the lake bed. In a second stage, this information was used in a kriging program to obtain the bathymetry of the wetland. This methodology is demonstrated as one of the most reliable and cost-efficient for the 3-D analysis of this type of water masses. The bathymetric study of the zone allows us to characterize the mid- and long-term hydrological evolution of the lakes by means of depth-area-volume curves.

We present a remote sensing observational method for the measurement of the spatio-temporal dynamics of ocean waves. Variational techniques are used to recover a coherent space-time reconstruction of oceanic sea states given stereo video imagery. The stereoscopic reconstruction problem is expressed in a variational optimization framework. There, we design an energy functional whose minimizer is the desired temporal sequence of wave heights. The functional combines photometric observations as well as spatial and temporal regularizers. A nested iterative scheme is devised to numerically solve, via 3-D multigrid methods, the system of partial differential equations resulting from the optimality condition of the energy functional. The output of our method is the coherent, simultaneous estimation of the wave surface height and radiance at multiple snapshots. We demonstrate our algorithm on real data collected off-shore. Statistical and spectral analysis are performed. Comparison with respect to an existing sequential method is analyzed.

Pseudomonas maltophilia CSV89, a bacterium isolated from soil in our laboratory, grows on 1-naphthoic acid as the sole source of carbon and energy. To elucidate the pathway for degradation of 1-naphthoic acid, the metabolites were isolated from spent medium, purified by TLC, and characterized by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The involvement of various metabolites as intermediates in the pathway was established by demonstrating relevant enzyme activities in cell-free extracts, oxygen uptake and transformation of metabolites by the whole cells. The results obtained from such studies suggest that the degradation of 1-naphthoic acid is initiated by double hydroxylation of the aromatic ring adjacent to the one bearing the carboxyl group, resulting in the formation of 1,2-dihydroxy-8-carboxynaphthalene. The resultant diol was oxidized via 3-formyl salicylate, 2-hydroxyisophthalate, salicylate and catechol to TCA cycle intermediates.

The aqueous complexation of lanthanide complexes of citrate in pH 7.4 solutions has been studied by using lanthanide-induced shift and relaxation times measurement methods. These results indicate that citrate coordinate via 3-hydroxyl and 3-carboxylate groups with lanthanide ions and form 1:2 (Ln/cit) isostructural complexes through lanthanide series. We suggest a new coordination geometry which is different from that described in literature.

Antioxidant activity of kappa-carrageenan oligosaccharides (OM) and their chemical modification derivatives was investigated employing various established in vitro systems, such as reducing power, iron ion chelation, and total antioxidant activity using beta-carotene-linoleic acid system. The oversulfated (SD), lowly (LAD), and highly acetylated derivatives (HAD) in reducing power assay, the phosphorylated derivative (PD) in metal chelating assay, and oversulfated and phosphorylated derivatives in total antioxidant activity assay exhibited antioxidant activity higher than that of carrageenan oligosaccharides. The results indicated that the chemical modification of carrageenan oligosaccharides can enhance their antioxidant activity in vitro. The protective effects of the carrageenan oligosaccharides and their chemically modified derivatives against H2O2 and UVA (long-wave ultraviolet radiation) induced oxidative damage on rat thymic lymphocyte were investigated by measuring cell viability via 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT). Thymic lymphocyte exposure to H2O2 and UVA, a marked reduction in cell survival was observed, which was significantly prevented by carrageenan oligosaccharides and their derivatives (preincubated for 2 h) at 66.7-2000 mu g/mL. But both the carrageenan oligosaccharides and their different derivatives showed the similar protective effects on intracellular level. Taken together, these results suggest that carrageenan oligosaccharides and their derivatives show relevant antioxidant activity both in vitro and in a cell system. (C) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Liquid coordination complexes (LCCs) are a new class of liquid Lewis acids, prepared by combining an excess of a metal halide (e.g. GaCl3) with a basic donor molecule (e.g. amides, amines or phosphines). LCCs were used to catalyse oligomerisation of 1-decene to polyalphaolefins (PAOs). Molecular weight distribution and physical properties of the produced oils were compliant with those required for low viscosity synthetic (Group IV) lubricant base oils. Kinematic viscosities at 100 °C of ca. 4 or 6 cSt were obtained, along with viscosity indexes above 120 and pour points below −57 °C. In industry, to achieve similar properties, BF3 gas is used as a catalyst. LCCs are proposed as a safer and economically attractive alternative to BF3 gas for the production of polyalphaolefins.

Cycloaddition reactions have been employed in polymer synthesis since the mid-nineteen sixties. This critical review will highlight recent notable advances in this field. For example, [2 + 2] cycloaddition reactions have been utilized in numerous polymerizations to enable the construction of strained polymer systems such as poly(2-azetidinone)s that can, in turn, afford polyfunctional beta-amino acid derived polymers. Polymers have also been synthesized successfully via (3 + 2) cycloaddition methods utilizing both thermal and high-pressure conditions. 'Click chemistry'-a process involving the reaction of azides with olefins, has also been adopted to generate linear and hyperbranched polymer architectures in a very efficient manner. [4 + 2] Cycloadditions have also been utilized under thermal and high-pressure conditions to produce rigid polymers such as polyimides and polyphenylenes. These cycloaddition polymerization methods afford polymers with potential for use in high performance polymers applications such as high temperature resistant coatings and polymeric organic light emitting diodes.

The increasing use of drug combinations to treat disease states, such as cancer, calls for improved delivery systems that are able to deliver multiple agents. Herein, we report a series of novel Janus dendrimers with potential for use in combination therapy. Different generations (first and second) of PEG-based dendrons containing two different “model drugs”, benzyl alcohol (BA) and 3-phenylpropionic acid (PPA), were synthesized. BA and PPA were attached via two different linkers (carbonate and ester, respectively) to promote differential drug release. The four dendrons were coupled together via (3 + 2) cycloaddition chemistries to afford four Janus dendrimers, which contained varying amounts and different ratios of BA and PPA, namely, (BA)2-G1-G1-(PPA)2, (BA)4-G2-G1-(PPA)2, (BA)2-G1-G2-(PPA)4, and (BA)4-G2-G2-(PPA)4. Release studies in plasma showed that the dendrimers provided sequential release of the two model drugs, with BA being released faster than PPA from all of the dendrons. The different dendrimers allowed delivery of increasing amounts (0.15–0.30 mM) and in exact molecular ratios (1:2; 2:1; 1:2; 2:2) of the two model drug compounds. The dendrimers were noncytotoxic (100% viability at 1 mg/mL) toward human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) and nontoxic toward red blood cells, as confirmed by hemolysis studies. These studies demonstrate that these Janus PEG-based dendrimers offer great potential for the delivery of drugs via combination therapy.

We investigated whether depressed muscle Na+-K+-ATPase activity with exercise reflected a loss of Na+-K+-ATPase units, the time course of its recovery postexercise, and whether this depressed activity was related to increased Na+-K+-ATPase isoform gene expression. Fifteen subjects performed fatiguing, knee extensor exercise at ~40% maximal work output per contraction. A vastus lateralis muscle biopsy was taken at rest, fatigue, 3 h, and 24 h postexercise and analyzed for maximal Na+-K+-ATPase activity via 3-O-methylfluorescein phosphatase (3-O-MFPase) activity, Na+-K+-ATPase content via [3H]ouabain binding sites, and Na+-K+-ATPase α1-, α2-, α3-, ß1-, ß2- and ß3-isoform mRNA expression by real-time RT-PCR. Exercise [352 (SD 267) s] did not affect [3H]ouabain binding sites but decreased 3-O-MFPase activity by 10.7 (SD 8)% (P < 0.05), which had recovered by 3 h postexercise, without further change at 24 h. Exercise elevated α1-isoform mRNA by 1.5-fold at fatigue (P < 0.05). This increase was inversely correlated with the percent change in 3-O-MFPase activity from rest to fatigue (%Δ3-O-MFPaserest-fatigue) (r = –0.60, P < 0.05). The average postexercise (fatigue, 3 h, 24 h) {alpha}1-isoform mRNA was increased 1.4-fold (P < 0.05) and approached a significant inverse correlation with %Δ3-O-MFPaserest-fatigue (r = –0.56, P = 0.08). Exercise elevated α2-isoform mRNA at fatigue 2.5-fold (P < 0.05), which was inversely correlated with %Δ3-O-MFPaserest-fatigue (r = –0.60, P = 0.05). The average postexercise α2-isoform mRNA was increased 2.2-fold (P < 0.05) and was inversely correlated with the %Δ3-O-MFPaserest-fatigue (r = –0.68, P < 0.05). Nonsignificant correlations were found between %Δ3-O-MFPaserest-fatigue and other isoforms. Thus acute exercise transiently decreased Na+-K+-ATPase activity, which was correlated with increased Na+-K+-ATPase gene expression. This suggests a possible signal-transduction role for depressed muscle Na+-K+-ATPase activity with exercise.
