Mr. Vaughan's case, March 2, 1724

Opinion (or brief or judgement?) delivered in a case involving a claim by the Colony of New Hampshire to a proprietory right in a ferry running between Portsmouth and Kittery (then in Massachusetts) on the Piscataqua River. The ferry was started in 1684 by John Woodman and conveyed by franchise to Colonel Vaughan by Governor Dudley in 1708. Vaughan died in 1724 and the patent passed to his estate. The town of Portsmouth laid claim to the ferry. Read concluded that this action was not well founded since the ferry is not being operated by possession but by franchise and that, furthermore, New Hampshire does not have complete power over the ferry because Massachusetts has power of franchise on the Kittery end of its route.

Structure of an amidohydrolase, SACOL0085, from methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus COL

Staphylococcus aureus is an opportunistic pathogen that rapidly acquires resistance to frontline antibiotics. The characterization of novel protein targets from this bacterium is thus an important step towards future therapeutic strategies. Here, the crystal structure of an amidohydrolase, SACOL0085, from S. aureus COL is described. SACOL0085 is a member of the M20D family of peptidases. Unlike other M20D peptidases, which are either monomers or dimers, SACOL0085 adopts a butterfly-shaped homotetrameric arrangement with extensive intersubunit interactions. Each subunit of SACOL0085 contains two Mn2+ ions at the active site. A conserved cysteine residue at the active site distinguishes M20D peptidases from other M20 family members. This cysteine, Cys103, serves as bidentate ligand coordinating both Mn2+ ions in SACOL0085.

Estimación del nivel de daño económico de la palomilla de la col (Plutella xylostella) en el cultivo de repollo (Brassica oleracea) var. superette

Con el objetivo de estimar el nivel de daño económico de plutella xylostella (L) en el cultivo de repollo se estableció un experimento de campo en la época de primera en la zona de pacaya (lv región), tratando de mantener diferente niveles de poblaciones de este insecto a través de aplicaciones semanales de 6 diferente dosis (0-783 g por ha) del insecticida dipel (bacillus thuringiensis). Los resultados demuestran que la incidencia de plutella xylostella en el cultivo de repollo no se destruye uniformemente durante todo el ciclo del cultivo. La incidencia es mayor durante las etapas de formación y llenado de cabeza y esto afecta el % de área foliar dañada, precio por cabeza e ingreso bruto, causando pérdidas económicas. La incidencia de plutella xylostella no afecta el número de cabeza formadas ni el peso de cabeza. El nivel de daño económico estimado en base de la relación entre el nivel de plutella xylostella y la perdida causada arroja valores de 0.03 larva por planta para la etapa de formación de cabeza (40-60 días después del transporte). Estos valores se pueden considerar como una primera aproximación del NDE de esta plaga para la época de primera en la zona de pacaya. La dosis d3 dipel 783 g/ha. Ejerció un control satisfactorio contra plutella xylostella obteniéndose con ella el mayor ingreso neto por ha.

Vaughan Williams and contemporary music: composers' forum

Like many long-lived composers, Vaughan Williams suffered a decline in his reputation immediately following his death, as the emergence in the 1960s of a younger generation of composers rendered much of his work outmoded in the eyes of many critics. In recent years, however, the reception of Vaughan Williams's music among composers has improved markedly, a combination of the ebbing of the tide of high modernism and greater pluralism in contemporary music, and a growing awareness that Vaughan Williams was perhaps more modernist (or at least progressive) than had previously been thought. In interviews with four leading British composers (two of whom were part of the 1960s generation mentioned above), I investigate the nature and extent of Vaughan Williams's legacy to his successors, both musical and social. What emerges is a near consensus on Vaughan Williams's greatest works, but a diversity of views on his compositional techniques and on his place among his European contemporaries.

Polybius’ ‘previous landslide’: Proof that Hannibal’s invasion route crossed the col de la traversette

Both Polybius and Livy described a landslide/landslip that blocked the Punic Army’s exfiltration from a high col on the water divide in the Western Alps. The landslide, more aptly termed rockfall, has been a source of contention amongst classicists for centuries despite the fact that only two cols—Clapier and Traversette—exhibit rockfall debris on the lee side of the Alps. While the Clapier rockfall is too small and too young to have provided blockage, the Traversette debris is nearly as Polybius described it when he retraced the invasion route some 60 years after the event. His ‘two-tier’ description of the deposit, a doublet of younger and older rock rubble, including measurements of width and volume are close to modern measurements and prove that he knew, in advance, the route Hannibal had followed. It would take a practiced eye to correctly identify the stratigraphic complexity inherent in the Traversette Rockfall. Here we present weathering ratios, soil stratigraphic, mineral, chemical and microbiological evidence in support of Polybius’ observations as a considerable background database for future geoarchaeological exploration.
