Plasma-assisted reactive rf magnetron sputtering deposition is used to fabricate vanadium oxide films on glass, silica and silicon substrates. The process conditions are optimized to synthesize phase-pure vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) featuring a nanocrystalline structure with the predominant (0 0 1) crystallographic orientation, surface morphology with rod-like nanosized grains and very uniform (the non-uniformity does not exceed 4%) coating thickness over large surface areas. The V2O5 films also show excellent and temperature-independent optical transmittance in a broad temperature range (20-95 °C). The results are relevant to the development of smart functional coatings with temperature-tunable properties. © 2007 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Peroxidative bromination of phenol red to its tetrabromo derivative, bromophenol blue, required vanadate in addition to H2O2 when carried out in the pH range of 5-7. Excess H2O2, with ratio of H2O2:vanadate of 2:1 and above, prevented the reaction. Diperoxovanadate, known to be formed in such reaction mixtures, was ineffective by itself and needed uncomplexed vanadate (V-v) or vanadyl (V-iv) to support bromination. Bromide-assisted reduction of the excess vanadate to vanadyl appeared to be an essential secondary reaction. In the absence of phenol red oxygen was released, and concomitantly bromide was oxidized to a form competent to brominate phenol red added after termination of oxygen release. These findings indicated participation of reactions leading to an intermediate derived from vanadyl and diperoxovanadate, previously described from this laboratory (Arch. Biochem. Biophys. 316, 319-326, 1995). Continuous bromination of phenol red occurred when glucose oxidase-glucose system was used as a source of continuous flow of H2O2. A scheme of reactions involving peroxovanadates (mono-, di-, mu-, and bromo-) is proposed for the formation and utilization of an active brominating species and for the recycling of the product, mono-peroxovanadate, by H2O2, which explains the catalytic role of vanadium in the bromoperoxidation reaction.

Ternary vanadium sulfides, MxVS2 (M = Fe, Co, Ni), with Image , were prepared and studied. The Image and Image series are isostructural with V5S8 and V3S4, respectively, while compounds with Image appear to have the hexagonal Cr2S3 structure. Structures of NiV2S4 and NiV4S8 were refined from powder X-ray diffraction intensities. Magnetic and electrical properties reveal that M ions in these sulfides exist in the divalent state having localized moments, while the vanadium 3 d electrons are itinerant.

Vapour phase oxidation of furfural over vanadium pentoxide catalyst was studied using an isothermal flow reactor in the temperature range of 220–280°C. Maleic anhydride and carbon dioxide are found to be formed from furfural by a parallel reaction scheme. The following rate equation based on the two-stage redox mechanism—the substance to be oxidized reduces the catalyst which in turn is reoxidized by oxygen from the feed—is found to explain the data satisfactorily. The reoxidation of the reduced catalyst was found to be the rate controlling step.

A detailed investigation of the d.c. polarographic behaviour of vanadium(V),-(IV) and -(III) in glycine solutions has been made keeping the total glycine concentration at 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 M and varying the pH of the solution. Experiments keeping the pH constant (using different ratios of glycine and glycine anion) and varying the glycine anion concentration, and also in predominantly anion solutions, have been made.

The magnetic susceptibilities of certain vanadium pentoxide systems supported by kieselgur have been determined in the temperature interval 30° to 400° C. The plot of reciprocal susceptibility against temperature for all the systems studied indicates sudden deflections at temperatures which are about 150° lower than those of optimum catalytic activity. It has been suggested that these points may mark the temperatures of commencement of structural changes which may be responsible for the activity of these catalysts.

Compositionally up and downgraded Bi4-x/3Ti3-xVxO12 (x=0.0, 0.012,0.03, 0.06) thin films were grown on Pt coated silicon substrates by pulsed laser deposition technique. Downgraded fabrication showed improved ferroelectric polarization in comparison to upgraded fabrication. Films deposited at 650 and 700 degrees C showed very large remnant polarization (2P(r)) value of 82 mu C cm(-2), which is comparatively large among all bismuth based thin films reported so far. A mechanism based on vanadium enrich seeded layer formation in the downgraded structure is proposed for the improvement. Moreover, frequency independent behavior (100Hz-5kHz) of the graded films ensures its potential application for various microelectronic devices. (c) 2010 American Institute of Physics. Pyridinium poly(hydrogen fluoride) reacts with the oxide of vanadium(V) and chlorides of chromium(III), iron (III) and Co(II) at room temperature forming the pyridinium salts of hexafluoro vanadate(V), hexafluorochromate(III), hexafluoroferrate(III) and hexafluorocobaltate(II) in near quantitative yields (80%). These pyridinium salts are the precursors for the preparation of the alkali metal hexafluorometallates by metathetic reactions in acetonitrile medium with the corresponding metal chlorides. The prepared salts have been identified by their infrared spectral data and elemental analysis.

Schiff base vanadium(IV) complexes of phenyl esters of the two acidic amino acids, i.e., aspartic and glutamic acid, were synthesized. The phenyl esters of these amino acids were synthesized by conventional method whereas the Schiff base vanadium(IV) complexes were synthesized using microwave irradiation. The complexes were characterized by spectroscopic tools such as IR, 1H NMR, mass (ES), ESR, and UV visible spectroscopy. All the complexes were studied for antibacterial and antifungal activity and found to be moderately active.

Interdiffusion study is conducted in the V-Si system to determine integrated diffusion coefficients of the phases. Activation energy values are calculated from the experiments conducted at different temperatures. The average values are found to be 208, 240 and 141 kJ/mol, respectively, for the V(3)Si, V(5)Si(3) and VSi(2) phases. The low activation energy for the VSi(2) phase indicates very high concentration of defects or the significant contribution from the grain boundary diffusion. The error in calculation of diffusion parameters from a very thin phase layer in a multiphase diffusion couple is discussed. Further the data available in the literature in this system is compared and the problems in the indirect methodology followed previously to calculate the diffusion parameters are discussed.
