Student Perspectives of the Context of Recess; Implications for Student Well-Being

With most students in Canada spending approximately 180 days a year in school, averaging more than six hours a day (Morrison & Kirby, 2011), Wei, Szumilas and Kutcher (2011) argue that this places educational institutions in an unique position in terms of influencing the health and well-being of students. This brings forth the need for school environments to be utilized in ways that are conducive to promoting student development. Much of the educational and developmental components embedded within the school system as well as experiences within greatly influence student’s health and well-being. A national statement was made a concerning American children’s education and mental health that is greatly applicable to the Canadian school system. It was stated that schools “must be active partners in the mental health care of our children” because of the “important interplay between emotional health and school success” (Lazarus & Sulkowski, 2011, pp. 15-16). This identifies the need to ensure that all students, as much as possible, are being provided with safe environments and sufficient support in order to encourage positive developmental trajectories of student health and well-being.

The prevalence of bulimia nervosa and bulimic behaviors among university students in Texas

This cross-sectional study examined by questionnaire the prevalence of bulimia nervosa and bulimic behaviors in a sample of 1175 undergraduate students enrolled in two state-supported universities in Texas. In one university, the student population was predominantly white; in the other, it was predominantly black. Fifty-nine percent of the respondents were female and 41% were male. Information regarding age, sex, ethnicity, college major, college year, marital status, housing arrangements, religion, socioeconomic status, height, weight, dieting behaviors, and family history of alcoholism, drug abuse, and depression was collected. Bulimia status was assessed using the Revised Bulimia Test (BULIT-R), which is based on the DSM-III-R criteria for bulimia nervosa. Only 1.3% of the females and 0.4% of the males were classified as having bulimia nervosa. The prevalence of bulimic behaviors was considerably higher; 6.4% of the females and 3.6% of the males were classified as having bulimic behaviors. Univariate analysis showed the following factors to be significantly associated with bulimic behaviors: female gender, single marital status, high BMI, a family history of alcoholism, drug abuse, or depression, and certain dieting behaviors. In the present study, ethnicity did not prove to be a significant factor associated with bulimia nervosa or bulimic behaviors. Multivariate analysis showed that, in comparison to normal/underweight individuals, the odds of having bulimic behaviors for severely overweight subjects were 2.23 (95% CI: 1.43, 3.50). Students who were dieting at the time of the study were 3.22 times (95% CI: 2.05, 5.06) as likely to have bulimic behaviors as were students who had never dieted. This study concludes there is a need to distinguish between bulimia nervosa and bulimic behaviors when estimating prevalence of a population. ^

Student lecture notes of Benjamin Peirce, 1797-1798

This collection contains approximately twenty-three handwritten lecture summaries on six leaves made by Harvard undergraduate Benjamin Peirce between September 1797 and November 22, 1798. The summaries generally provide a few sentences describing the topic covered and primarily pertain to lectures on English grammar delivered by Eliphalet Pearson, the Hollis Professor of Hebrew and other Oriental Languages. There are also summaries for single lectures by David Tappan, the Hollis Professor Divinity; Samuel Webber, the Hollis Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy; and John Snelling Popkin, the Greek Tutor from 1795 to 1798, and later the Eliot Professor of Greek Literature. There is also an undated summary of a lecture by Benjamin Waterhouse, the Hersey Professor of Theory and Practice of Physic.

Student essay attributed to William Ellery Channing, 1797 June 5

Three-page handwritten essay composed in English and attributed to Harvard undergraduate William Ellery Channing. The verso of the last page is inscribed "Channing 5 June 97." A quotation from Edward Young appears at the top of the first page: "A Competence is vital to content / Much wealth is corpulence, if not disease" and discusses the topic of affluence. The document includes edits and struck-through words.

WWW-pohjainen opintojensuunnittelutyökalu

Opintojenohjauksen tarve on kasvanut viime vuosien aikana suomalaisissa yliopistoissa. Kasvaneet valintamahdollisuudet ovat monimutkaistaneet tutkintorakenteita ja tätä kautta opiskelijoiden saaman henkilökohtaisen opintojensuunnittelun tarve on korostunut. Yliopistoilla on kuitenkin käytössään rajalliset resurssit opintojen ohjaukseen, joten ohjausta pyritään tehostamaan mutta samalla säilyttämään palvelun laatu. Tarkempi ja yksityiskohtaisempi ohjeistaminen ja opintosuunnitelmien mallipohjat ovat auttaneet opiskelijoiden tehtävää. Samalla opiskelijoilta on alettu vaatia henkilökohtaisen suunnitelman laatiminen jo opintojen alkuvaiheessa. Tässä diplomityössä on toteutettu tutkintorakenteeseen perustuva WWW-pohjainen opintojensuunnittelutyökalu. Järjestelmän toiminta perustuu relaatiotietokantaan mallinnettuun tutkintorakennetietoon ja sen hyödyntämiseen. Opiskelijat voivat käyttää tätä tietoa laatiessaan opintosuunnitelmiaan ja opintosuunnittelijat tarkastaessaan opiskelijoiden suunnitelmia. Järjestelmän avulla opintojensuunnittelua ja sen ohjaamista voidaan tehostaa ja samalla opiskelijoille voidaan tarjota keskitetty tietovarasto opintosuunnitelmansa säilyttämiseen ja ylläpitoon. Työn tuloksena toteutettu järjestelmä julkaistiin Lappeenrannan teknillisen yliopiston tietotekniikan opiskelijoiden käyttöön keväällä 2005. Kerätyn saadun palautteen perusteella voidaan sanoa, että tämäntyyppiselle palvelulle osana yliopiston tarjoamaa opintojen ohjausta on olemassa oikea tarve.

Uma análise das práticas pedagógicas na educação inclusiva : um estudo de caso

O presente trabalho procura, inicialmente, fazer um breve momento da história da Educação Especial no Brasil, com o interesse de ressaltar a sua evolução. Em seguida, iremos dar ênfase ao perfil do professor na educação inclusiva e às políticas públicas voltadas para esta modalidade de educação. Para dar suporte metodológico à temática, fundamentamos-nos em Mantoan (2002); Carvalho (2008); Mazzota (2005); Mittler (2003); Stainback & Stainback (1999). No que se refere ao método histórico da pesquisa fundamentamos-nos em Minayo (2009), para a utilização das fontes e das técnicas para a realização deste trabalho. Sendo este um estudo de caso, fomos a campo, observamos e registramos fatos de um grupo social, utilizamos entrevistas semiestruturadas com o gestor da escola, professores e pais dos alunos. Consultamos livros, revistas e documentos, além das observações informais, tudo isso com a intenção de esclarecer e fundamentar o nosso trabalho. A instituição onde realizamos esta pesquisa é a Escola Caminho do Saber, que faz parte da rede particular de ensino e atua na perspectiva da educação inclusiva. O seu trabalho de inclusão deu início em 1991, quando pela primeira vez recebeu um aluno com deficiência e desde então vem criando expectativas para a educação inclusiva em Sergipe. Quanto à aprendizagem, a escola trabalha com a exploração das potencialidades dos alunos, de certo que para a perspectiva da inclusão, a instituição precisa fazer algumas adequações para atender a todos os alunos. Quanto ao convívio com as diversidades, a escola se mostra capaz de favorecer um cotidiano saudável, mesmo tendo que enfrentar desafios. O nosso interesse em relação a este trabalho é contribuir para que esta temática possa criar novas expectativas à sociedade e que outras pessoas possam se interessar por este assunto, dando continuidade no que se refere a iniciativas e lutas civis em busca de conquistas de direitos das pessoas com deficiências. Contudo, entendemos que toda mudança provoca anseios e inquietações, mas os desafios na educação são diários, e isto faz com que os professores reflitam e busquem novas estratégias para, juntamente com os alunos, desenvolver um processo de aprendizagem proveitoso. Por fim, mostraremos os resultados da pesquisa e as considerações finais.

Characterisation of soils containing naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) using in situ and rapid laboratory techniques. Case study: South Terras, Cornwall

In situ analysis has become increasingly important for contaminated land investigation and remediation. At present, portable techniques are used mainly as scanning tools to assess the spread and magnitude of the contamination, and are an adjunct to conventional laboratory analyses. A site in Cornwall, containing naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM), provided an opportunity for Reading University PhD student Anna Kutner to compare analytical data collected in situ with data generated by laboratory-based methods. The preliminary results in this paper extend the author‟s poster presentation at last September‟s GeoSpec2010 conference held in Lancaster.
