Resumo

Three-page handwritten essay composed in English and attributed to Harvard undergraduate William Ellery Channing. The verso of the last page is inscribed "Channing 5 June 97." A quotation from Edward Young appears at the top of the first page: "A Competence is vital to content / Much wealth is corpulence, if not disease" and discusses the topic of affluence. The document includes edits and struck-through words.

Title supplied by cataloger. Item received January 19, 1923 from the library of Professor Charles Eliot Norton. Another student essay originally attributed to William Ellery Channing and cataloged with this document was identified in 2005 as the work of Channing's brother Francis Channing (Harvard AB 1794) and reclassified as part of HUC 8792.386.13.

William Ellery Channing (1780-1842), a Unitarian minister, was born in Newport, Rhode Island on April 7, 1780. He received an AB from Harvard in 1798, an AM in 1802, and an STD in 1820. Channing was ordained as the pastor of the Federal Street Church in Boston in 1803, and served there for the rest of his life. He gained national attention as a proponent of Unitarianism. Channing died on October 2, 1842.
