Testing the influence of topography and material properties on catchment-scale soil moisture patterns using remotely sensed vegetation patterns in a humid temperate catchment, northern Britain

In order to evaluate the relationship between the apparent complexity of hillslope soil moisture and the emergent patterns of catchment hydrological behaviour and water quality, we need fine-resolution catchment-wide data on soil moisture characteristics. This study proposes a methodology whereby vegetation patterns obtained from high-resolution orthorectified aerial photographs are used as an indicator of soil moisture characteristics. This enables us to examine a set of hypotheses regarding what drives the spatial patterns of soil moisture at the catchment scale (material properties or topography). We find that the pattern of Juncus effusus vegetation is controlled largely by topography and mediated by the catchment's material properties. Characterizing topography using the topographic index adds value to the soil moisture predictions relative to slope or upslope contributing area (UCA). Miehittämätön taisteluilma-alus UCAV : teknologiakatsaus

Miehittämättömien ilma-alusten käyttö taistelukentällä yleistyy jatkuvasti ja niiden rooli taistelussa on laajentumassa tiedustelusta taisteluun. Jatkuva aseteknologian kallistuminen ja ilmaoperaatioiden luonteen muuttuminen saattavat lisätä miehittämättömien ilma-alusten käyttöä merkittävästi. Miehittämättömät taisteluilma-alukset (UCAV = Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle) ovat monen maan suunnitelmissa mukana kun tulevaisuuden ilmataisteluiden suorittajia mietitään. Tämän tutkielman tutkimusmenetelmänä on kirjallisuustutkimus, ja tarkoituksena perehtyä laajasti aiheeseen liittyvään kirjallisuuteen. Tutkielmassa UCAV:ien teknisistä ominaisuuksista perehdytään pääsääntöisesti niihin, jotka poikkeavat miehitetyistä taisteluilma-aluksista. Suurimpana erona miehitettyihin ilmaaluksiin on miehittämättömien taisteluilma-alusten osittainen tai kokonaan autonominen toiminta ja kauko-ohjaus. Tutkimuksen tekohetkellä ei millään maalla ole operatiivisessa käytössä varsinaisia UCAV:eja. Kaikki tässä tutkielmassa mainitut UCAV:it ovat projekteja, joiden tarkoitus on tutkia erilaisia teknisiä ratkaisuja aikanaan valmistettaviin ilma-aluksiin. Johtopäätöksissä arvioidaan UCAV:ien käyttöönoton aikataulua ja niitä tehtäviä, mihin miehittämättömiä taisteluilma-aluksia voitaisiin käyttää.

Miehittämättömän taisteluilma-aluksen maataistelukyky

Miehittämättömien taisteluilma-alusten käyttö on yleistynyt taistelukentällä ja niiden rooli on muuttunut pelkästä tiedonkerääjästä aktiiviseen tulenkäyttöön. Kustannustehokkuus sekä UCAV:ien kyky toteuttaa vaarallisia tehtäviä riskeeraamatta ihmishenkiä on syy niiden aktiivisen käyttöön. Ase sekä sensoritekniikan kehitys on mahdollistanut UCAV:ien roolin kasvattamista, jolloin tunnistamistehtäviin tulenkäyttöä varten ei enää välttämättä tarvitse käyttää miehitettyä kalustoa. Miehittämättömät taisteluilma-alusjärjestelmät kykenevät tiedustelu sekä tulenkäyttöoperaatioihin jo täysin itsenäisesti tai ne voivat toimia kolmannen osapuolen kanssa. Tämä tutkielma on kirjallisuustutkimus jonka tarkoituksena on perehtyä kahden erityyppisen miehittämättömän taisteluilma-aluksen maataistelukykyyn erilaisten esimerkkien avulla. Esimerkit on valittu selkeästi kahdesta eri UCAV-kategoriasta, joista toinen edustaa tiedusteluun suunniteltua rynnäkkökykyistä taktista lennokkia ja toinen lentotukialukselta parvikokonaisuudessa toimivaa melkein itsenäistä järjestelmää. Ensimmäinen asialuku käsittelee alusten maataistelukykyä ja esittelee niiden asejärjestelmiä sekä sensoreita. Toinen asialuku keskittyy miehittämättömään taisteluilma-alusjärjestelmään. Johtopäätöksissä on summattu asialuvuissa esille tulleet tekijät jotka mahdollistavat UCAV:ien maataistelukyvyn ja jotka toisaalta rajoittavat sitä. Johtopäätöksissä on avattu myös alan tulevaisuudennäkymiä.

An evaluation of motivations for studying pharmacy, career commitment and future career plans

It has been predicted that there will be a full time pharmacist workforce shortage of over 15,000 by 2013. It is therefore necessary to recruit more students of a suitable calibre to undergraduate pharmacy degree courses. This study was designed to investigate the motivations of pre-university and MPharm students for studying pharmacy. A series of focus groups was conducted with Year 12 students and a national survey of Year 13, 1st year MPharm and 4th year MPharm students was undertaken. The study found that amongst Year 12 students, pharmacy is perceived as a background profession and was also perceived as being of a lower status than medicine and dentistry. It was concluded that there was a need for greater promotion of pharmacy as a career amongst pre-university students, including the provision of structured work experience placements. Analysis of UCAS applicant data for pharmacy shows that the applicant pool is buoyant and that the majority of applicants are female. Female respondents to the surveys were significantly more likely than males to wish to work part time if they had a family. This could lead to further shortages in the full time workforce. The largest ethnic group of applicants to pharmacy degree courses were Asian. Business ownership and self-employment were motivations for entering the procession of pharmacy and career aims for significantly more Asian than White respondents. Ownership of independent pharmacies is declining and this could be a barrier to future recruitment to pharmacy degree courses. A high degree of interest in locum working may present a problem for continuity in commissioned services within community pharmacy practice. Further work is needed to examine the motivations for working as a locum pharmacist.

Grades do have a bearing

I am afraid that I need to challenge the assertion made by Rachel Airley in her letter (PJ, 10 March 2012, p308) that “there is no clear cut evidence that UCAS points obtained at school have any bearing on final degree performance”. Research from the Higher Education Funding Council for England — the body responsible for the distribution of funding to universities in England — shows that educational attainment before entry to higher education (ie, A-level grades) is the most important factor in determining academic success on undergraduate degree programmes.1,2 Indeed, research I have recently conducted on a cohort of MPharm students at Aston University (which will hopefully be published in a peer-reviewed academic journal shortly) demonstrates a strong positive correlation between UCAS Tariff points per A-level and final degree classification. As Dr Airley highlights in her letter, competition for places on MPharm programmes remains fierce and, in response to high levels of demand, her own institution has increased its standard entry offer. If UCAS Tariff points have little predictive ability of performance on the MPharm programme then, aside from minimising the administrative burden that the admissions process places on an institution, what is the logic behind increasing standard entry offers?

Jigsaw Java: Intelligent, Automated Marking

The popularity of Computing degrees in the UK has been increasing significantly over the past number of years. In Northern Ireland, from 2007 to 2015, there has been a 40% increase in acceptances to Computer Science degrees with England seeing a 60% increase over the same period (UCAS, 2016). However, this is tainted as Computer Science degrees also continue to maintain the highest dropout rates.
In Queen’s University Belfast we currently have a Level 1 intake of over 400 students across a number of computing pathways. Our drive as staff is to empower and motivate the students to fully engage with the course content. All students take a Java programming module the aim of which is to provide an understanding of the basic principles of object-oriented design. In order to assess these skills, we have developed Jigsaw Java as an innovative assessment tool offering intelligent, semi-supervised automated marking of code.
Jigsaw Java allows students to answer programming questions using a drag-and-drop interface to place code fragments into position. Their answer is compared to the sample solution and if it matches, marks are allocated accordingly. However, if a match is not found then the corresponding code is executed using sample data to determine if its logic is acceptable. If it is, the solution is flagged to be checked by staff and if satisfactory is saved as an alternative solution. This means that appropriate marks can be allocated and should another student have submitted the same placement of code fragments this does not need to be executed or checked again. Rather the system now knows how to assess it.
Jigsaw Java is also able to consider partial marks dependent on code placement and will “learn” over time. Given the number of students, Jigsaw Java will improve the consistency and timeliness of marking.
