Internet e turismo sono due settori che si intersecano profondamente e che da sempre risultano interconnessi. Grazie al progresso delle nuove tecnologie l’ambito turistico ha mutato profondamente i suoi connotati, sia da un punto di vista strutturale sia nella gestione e nella distribuzione delle informazioni. Con l’ingresso nell’era digitale, lo sviluppo delle ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) e l’avvento del web 2.0, la comunicazione turistica si è modificata in modo sostanziale: si è passati da una comunicazione monologica e unidirezionale da esperti a pubblico, a un dialogo tra le varie parti coinvolte, dove la centralità dell’utente/consumatore, che ha acquisito un ruolo proattivo e guadagnato il diritto di parola, si fa sempre più evidente. In particolare la comparsa del web sociale, che si contraddistingue per la sua forte dinamicità e un carattere collaborativo e comunitario, ha permesso lo sviluppo di modelli comunicativi originali, che sono riusciti ad apportare elementi innovativi e peculiari anche nel linguaggio del turismo, varietà linguistica già di per sé piuttosto particolare ed eterogenea. Tramite l’analisi della versione spagnola del portale di viaggi più famoso al mondo (Tripadvisor.es), si è cercato di evidenziare quali caratteristiche mostrate nei testi pubblicati in questo spazio fossero riconducibili all’influenza del linguaggio del turismo dei generi più tradizionali (guide, dépliant, cataloghi) e quali invece fossero gli elementi attribuibili al mezzo computer e quindi appartenessero alla sfera della comunicazione mediata dal computer.

The travel and hospitality industry is one which relies especially crucially on word of mouth, both at the level of overall destinations (Australia, Queensland, Brisbane) and at the level of travellers’ individual choices of hotels, restaurants, sights during their trips. The provision of such word-of-mouth information has been revolutionised over the past decade by the rise of community-based Websites which allow their users to share information about their past and future trips and advise one another on what to do or what to avoid during their travels. Indeed, the impact of such user-generated reviews, ratings, and recommendations sites has been such that established commercial travel advisory publishers such as Lonely Planet have experienced a pronounced downturn in sales ¬– unless they have managed to develop their own ways of incorporating user feedback and contributions into their publications. This report examines the overall significance of ratings and recommendation sites to the travel industry, and explores the community, structural, and business models of a selection of relevant ratings and recommendations sites. We identify a range of approaches which are appropriate to the respective target markets and business aims of these organisations, and conclude that there remain significant opportunities for further operators especially if they aim to cater for communities which are not yet appropriately served by specific existing sites. Additionally, we also point to the increasing importance of connecting stand-alone ratings and recommendations sites with general social media spaces like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, and of providing mobile interfaces which enable users to provide updates and ratings directly from the locations they happen to be visiting. In this report, we profile the following sites: * TripAdvisor, the international market leader for travel ratings and recommendations sites, with a membership of some 11 million users; * IgoUgo, the other leading site in this field, which aims to distinguish itself from the market leader by emphasising the quality of its content; * Zagat, a long-established publisher of restaurant guides which has translated its crowdsourcing model from the offline to the online world; * Lonely Planet’s Thorn Tree site, which attempts to respond to the rise of these travel communities by similarly harnessing user-generated content; * Stayz, which attempts to enhance its accommodation search and booking services by incorporating ratings and reviews functionality; and * BigVillage, an Australian-based site attempting to cater for a particularly discerning niche of travellers; * Dopplr, which connects travel and social networking in a bid to pursue the lucrative market of frequent and business travellers; * Foursquare, which builds on its mobile application to generate a steady stream of ‘check-ins’ and recommendations for hospitality and other services around the world; * Suite 101, which uses a revenue-sharing model to encourage freelance writers to contribute travel writing (amongst other genres of writing); * Yelp, the global leader in general user-generated product review and recommendation services. In combination, these profiles provide an overview of current developments in the travel ratings and recommendations space (and beyond), and offer an outlook for further possibilities. While no doubt affected by the global financial downturn and the reduction in travel that it has caused, travel ratings and recommendations remain important – perhaps even more so if a reduction in disposable income has resulted in consumers becoming more critical and discerning. The aggregated word of mouth from many tens of thousands of travellers which these sites provide certainly has a substantial influence on their users. Using these sites to research travel options has now become an activity which has spread well beyond the digirati. The same is true also for many other consumer industries, especially where there is a significant variety of different products available – and so, this report may also be read as a case study whose findings are able to be translated, mutatis mutandis, to purchasing decisions from household goods through consumer electronics to automobiles.

Cette thèse est une collection de trois articles en économie de l'information. Le premier chapitre sert d'introduction et les Chapitres 2 à 4 constituent le coeur de l'ouvrage. Le Chapitre 2 porte sur l’acquisition d’information sur l’Internet par le biais d'avis de consommateurs. En particulier, je détermine si les avis laissés par les acheteurs peuvent tout de même transmettre de l’information à d’autres consommateurs, lorsqu’il est connu que les vendeurs peuvent publier de faux avis à propos de leurs produits. Afin de comprendre si cette manipulation des avis est problématique, je démontre que la plateforme sur laquelle les avis sont publiés (e.g. TripAdvisor, Yelp) est un tiers important à considérer, autant que les vendeurs tentant de falsifier les avis. En effet, le design adopté par la plateforme a un effet indirect sur le niveau de manipulation des vendeurs. En particulier, je démontre que la plateforme, en cachant une partie du contenu qu'elle détient sur les avis, peut parfois améliorer la qualité de l'information obtenue par les consommateurs. Finalement, le design qui est choisi par la plateforme peut être lié à la façon dont elle génère ses revenus. Je montre qu'une plateforme générant des revenus par le biais de commissions sur les ventes peut être plus tolérante à la manipulation qu'une plateforme qui génère des revenus par le biais de publicité. Le Chapitre 3 est écrit en collaboration avec Marc Santugini. Dans ce chapitre, nous étudions les effets de la discrimination par les prix au troisième degré en présence de consommateurs non informés qui apprennent sur la qualité d'un produit par le biais de son prix. Dans un environnement stochastique avec deux segments de marché, nous démontrons que la discrimination par les prix peut nuire à la firme et être bénéfique pour les consommateurs. D'un côté, la discrimination par les prix diminue l'incertitude à laquelle font face les consommateurs, c.-à-d., la variance des croyances postérieures est plus faible avec discrimination qu'avec un prix uniforme. En effet, le fait d'observer deux prix (avec discrimination) procure plus d'information aux consommateurs, et ce, même si individuellement chacun de ces prix est moins informatif que le prix uniforme. De l'autre côté, il n'est pas toujours optimal pour la firme de faire de la discrimination par les prix puisque la présence de consommateurs non informés lui donne une incitation à s'engager dans du signaling. Si l'avantage procuré par la flexibilité de fixer deux prix différents est contrebalancé par le coût du signaling avec deux prix différents, alors il est optimal pour la firme de fixer un prix uniforme sur le marché. Finalement, le Chapitre 4 est écrit en collaboration avec Sidartha Gordon. Dans ce chapitre, nous étudions une classe de jeux où les joueurs sont contraints dans le nombre de sources d'information qu'ils peuvent choisir pour apprendre sur un paramètre du jeu, mais où ils ont une certaine liberté quant au degré de dépendance de leurs signaux, avant de prendre une action. En introduisant un nouvel ordre de dépendance entre signaux, nous démontrons qu'un joueur préfère de l'information qui est la plus dépendante possible de l'information obtenue par les joueurs pour qui les actions sont soit, compléments stratégiques et isotoniques, soit substituts stratégiques et anti-toniques, avec la sienne. De même, un joueur préfère de l'information qui est la moins dépendante possible de l'information obtenue par les joueurs pour qui les actions sont soit, substituts stratégiques et isotoniques, soit compléments stratégiques et anti-toniques, avec la sienne. Nous établissons également des conditions suffisantes pour qu'une structure d'information donnée, information publique ou privée par exemple, soit possible à l'équilibre.

Travelers’ hotel booking behaviors increasingly depend on peers' opinions and online ratings. User-generated content in travel industry is the phenomenon studied in this research, which aims to fill the literature gap on the drivers to write reviews on TripAdvisor. The object of study is relevant from a managerial standpoint since the motivators that drive users to co-create can shape strategies and be turned into external leverages that generate value for brands through content production. From an academic perspective, the goal is to enhance literature on the field, and fill a gap on adherence of local culture to UGC given industry structure specificities. The business’ impact of UGC is supported by the fact that it increases e-commerce conversion rates since research undertaken by Ye, Law, Gu and Chen (2009) states each 10% in traveler review ratings boosts online booking in more than 5%. The literature review builds a theoretical framework on required concepts to support the TripAdvisor case study methodology. Quantitative and qualitative data compound the methodological approach through literature review, desk research, executive interview, and user survey which are analyzed under factor and cluster analysis to group users with similar drivers towards UGC. Additionally, cultural and country-specific aspects impact user behavior. Since hospitality industry in Brazil is concentrated on long tail – 92% of hotels in Brazil are independent ones (Jones Lang LaSalle, 2015, p. 7) – and lesser known hotels take better advantage of reviews – according to Luca (2011) each one Yelp-star increase in rating, increases in 9% independent restaurant revenue whereas in chain restaurants the reviews have no effect – , this dissertation sought to understand UGC in the context of travelers from São Paulo (Brazil) and adopted the case of TripAdvisor to describe what are the incentives that drives user’s co-creation among targeted travelers. It has an outcome of 4 different clusters with different drivers for UGC that enables to design marketing strategies, and it also concludes there’s a big potential to convert current content consumers into producers, the remaining importance of friends and family referrals and the role played by incentives. Among the conclusions, this study lead us to an exploration of positive feedback and network effect concepts, a reinforcement of the UGC relevance for long tail hotels, the interdependence across content production, consumption and participation; and the role played by technology allied with behavioral analysis to take effective decisions. The adherence of UGC to hospitality industry, also outlines the formulation of the concept present in the dissertation title of “Traveler-Generated Content”.

The large number of opinions generated by online users made the former “word of mouth” find its way to virtual world. In addition to be numerous, many of the useful reviews are mixed with a large number of fraudulent, incomplete or duplicate reviews. However, how to find the features that influence on the number of votes received by an opinion and find useful reviews? The literature on opinion mining has several studies and techniques that are able to analyze of properties found in the text of reviews. This paper presents the application of a methodology for evaluation of usefulness of opinions with the aim of identifying which characteristics have more influence on the amount of votes: basic utility (e.g. ratings about the product and/or service, date of publication), textual (e.g.size of words, paragraphs) and semantics (e.g., the meaning of the words of the text). The evaluation was performed in a database extracted from TripAdvisor with opinionsabout hotels written in Portuguese. Results show that users give more attention to recent opinions with higher scores for value and location of the hotel and with lowest scores for sleep quality and service and cleanliness. Texts with positive opinions, small words, few adjectives and adverbs increase the chances of receiving more votes.

O turismo é um setor de atividade em crescimento a nível mundial, sendo essa, também, a tendência em Portugal nos últimos anos. Dada a diversificação da oferta, optámos por nos centrar numa tipologia de turismo recente e inovadora – o Glamping, uma vertente sustentável, ligada à natureza. A presente dissertação tem como objetivo definir um conceito abrangente de Glamping, através da desconstrução da imagem percebida pelos indivíduos que utilizam esta tipologia de turismo, a qual, sendo bastante procurada por turistas estrangeiros, não é ainda muito conhecida pelos portugueses. A metodologia adotada apresenta duas fases: 1)Teórica que consubstancia uma revisão de literatura criteriosa sobre os conceitos associados a uma experiência de Glamping, uma experiência intimista que reverte nas dimensões de Ryan (2003/2004). Estas dimensões alimentam a análise e interpretação dos comentários deixados pelos turistas no Tripadvisor. 2) Prática - usando as observações escritas dos turistas que experimentaram este "camping de luxo " e com base no programa de codificação ATLAS.ti , foram analisados os códigos associados à intimidade (física, verbal, intelectual e espiritual ) a partir dos 135 comentários transcritos e codificados, com o objetivo último de materializar o conceito de Glamping . Os resultados sugerem que esta experiencia é fundamentalmente espiritual, como comprovado pelos comentários dos turistas, designadamente a tranquilidade, o ambiente calmo e a relação que se estabelece com os anfitriões. No entanto, o que realmente sobressaiu neste estudo, é a maneira como as várias intimidades se interligam neste meio, sugerindo que os turistas procuram neste espaço recuperar o seu equilíbrio e o seu bem estar. Este trabalho exploratório na sua essência pretende materializar conceito geral de Glamping, partilhá-lo, fomentando o seu desenvolvimento e disseminação.
