Previously we have shown that organic solutes can be extracted from ionic liquids (ILs) with supercritical CO2 and that ILs can be induced to separate from organic and aqueous mixtures by applying gaseous CO2 pressure. Thus, we are interested in the solvent strength of IL/CO2 mixtures. Here we use 4-nitroaniline, N,N-diethyl-4-nitroaniline and Reichardt's dye 33 to determine the Kamlet-Taft parameters for four different imidazolium based ILs and their mixtures with CO2 at 25 and 40degreesC. The effect of temperature and carbon dioxide concentration on these parameters was determined. The polarizability parameter depends weakly on the CO2 concentration. However, the hydrogen bond donating ability and the hydrogen bond accepting ability are virtually independent Of CO2 pressure. The results indicate that the strong interactions between ILs and probe molecules are not influenced by CO2.

Being of high relevance for many technological applications, the solubility of sour gases in solvents of low volatility is still poorly described and understood. Aiming at purifying natural gas streams, the present work contributes for a more detailed knowledge and better understanding of the solubility of sour gases in these fluids, in particularly on ionic liquids. A new apparatus, developed and validated specially for phase equilibria studies of this type of systems, allowed the study of the solvent basicity, molecular weight and polarity influence on the absorption of carbon dioxide and methane. The non ideality of carbon dioxide solutions in ionic liquids and other low volatile solvents, with which carbon dioxide is known to form electron donor-acceptor complexes, is discussed, allowing the development of a correlation able to describe the carbon dioxide solubility in low volatile solvents. Furthermore, the non ideality of solutions of light compounds, such as SO2, NH3 and H2S, in ionic liquids is also investigated and shown to present negative deviations to the ideality in the liquid phase, that can be predicted by the Flory-Huggins model. For last, the effect of the ionic liquid polarity, described through the Kamlet-Taft parameters, on the CO2/CH4 and H2S/CH4 selectivities is also evaluated and shown to stand as a viable tool for the selection of ionic liquids with enhanced selectivities.

Traffic emissions are an important contributor to ambient air pollution, especially in large cities featuring extensive and high density traffic networks. Bus fleets represent a significant part of inner city traffic causing an increase in exposure to general public, passengers and drivers along bus routes and at bus stations. Limited information is available on quantification of the levels, and governing parameters affecting the air pollution exposure at bus stations. The presented study investigated the bus emissions-dominated ambient air in a large, inner city bus station, with a specific focus on submicrometer particles. The study’s objectives were (i) quantification of the concentration levels; (ii) characterisation of the spatio-temporal variation; (iii) identification of the parameters governing the emissions levels at the bus station and (iv) assessment of the relationship between particle concentrations measured at the street level (background) and within the bus station. The results show that up to 90% of the emissions at the station are ultrafine particles (smaller than 100 nm), with the concentration levels up to 10 times the value of urban ambient air background (annual) and up to 4 times the local ambient air background. The governing parameters affecting particle concentration at the station were bus flow rate and meteorological conditions (wind velocity). Particle concentration followed a diurnal trend, with an increase in the morning and evening, associated with traffic rush hours. Passengers’ exposure could be significant compared to the average outdoor and indoor exposure levels.
